EDITOR’S LETTER

GREETINGS!

Welcome to the summer edition of Urban Life. After a long cold winter, we are finally looking forward to some summer heat. Let’s hope the weather doesn’t let us down for once, as we could do with some sunshine over the next few months. A fairly feature-packed edition awaits you here, starting with a post-show report on the 4th London Jewellery Week. We also have reviews for the Health & Beauty section, along with the first of our Horology features written by Alexander Friedman from luxury watch portal Watchonista. Expect to see some amazing timepieces being featured over the coming editions, starting with this edition focussing on some spectacular collaborations between luxury watch brands and automotive marques. Talking of automotive, I have had the pleasure of test-driving the Rolls Royce Experimental Electric 102EX in the absence of Patrick, our Motoring Ed who is currently on his honeymoon (so congratulations are in order). There are a couple of pages on the Goodwood Festival of Speed as well, which was a treat to attend. I’ve also just come back from Canada for our luxury travel feature, so if you are heading out to Ontario, there’s a five page guide on where to go and what to see in Toronto and Ottawa. I had a great time in this amazing country, and only wish I had more time to explore its richness and share it with you. If you do visit any of the reviewed places, please feel free to share them with us on our fan page at: www.facebook.com/urbanlifemag. I assure you, you will not be disappointed with the Canadian hospitality! The next edition will mark the 7th year anniversary edition of the magazine for us, so keep a look out for that in October. As always, if you have any comments or suggestions, please do not hesitate to write to me at my email address below.

Until the next edition… YOURS

BEAUTY REVIEWS Feature by Caroline Chantler

PENNINGHAME – A WEEKEND’S RESIDENTIAL AT THE HOME OF MACROBIOTICS Located in a 36 hectare estate in Dumfries and Galloway, on the banks of the River Cree, Penninghame is a beautiful Baronial Edwardian house, steeped in history. A macrobiotic learning and training centre, it’s focused on health and understanding the effects of food on well-being. Marie and Raymond Butler, the founders and owners of Penninghame House, run several different courses with another husbandand-wife team; Bill and Marlene WatsonTara, offering lectures on nutrition, cooking with macrobiotic ingredients, health remedies and one-to-one health assessments. Together, the two couples have more than a century of combined experience in the field. Developed by George Ohsawa in Japan in the 1920s, macrobiotics literally means “long life” (from the Greek makro, meaning long, and bio, meaning life). It

is a lifestyle choice rather than a diet. Since Gwyneth Paltrow, Tom Cruise and Madonna became the advocates of macrobiotics it has become a strange, but otherworldly media fascination. The idea of macrobiotics is that you choose fresh, locally produced foods, that help to prolong your life and balance your body and mind, rather than force your organs to deal with processed food and sugars that can knock your system out of sync. “When you see how good Tom Cruise and Madonna look, you have to wonder about their diet. It’s no surprise that it’s macrobiotic. All that vitality and energy comes from somewhere” Says Marie. A macrobiotic diet should re-ignite the body’s energy, and consists of whole grains, beans, plants, proteins, steamed vegetables, seaweeds (super rich in minerals we no longer get from land sources) and an endless supply of miso

soup. It avoids all processed foods, additives, meat, dairy, caffeine and alcohol. Macrobiotics is not about being vegetarian or not allowing yourself treats. It’s about finding balance and harmony with what you eat and who you are. A six-course dinner was served on the first evening, cooked by their top residential macrobiotic chef. We dined on a delightfully creamy mushroom risotto, delicate miso soup, crispy tempura with tangy shoyu sauce, delectable adzuki bean burgers and a delicious agar chocolate mousse. We are told stories of how The Butler’s discovered their love of macrobiotics and how it has changed their lives. Even better, we’re told that everything passing our lips at the beautiful banquet is helping our bodies in some way – from our kidneys and liver to our skin and energy levels.

Each morning, after an early session of Chi ball or a yoga class and a walk through the grounds, the group head to the classroom for lectures by Bill Tara. The beauty of the Penninghame program comes from the sheer volume of education you are exposed to during your stay. Daily lectures on the why’s and wherefores of macrobiotics, advocating, sourcing fresh local seasonally appropriate produce and constant how-to cookery classes, which even novices can partake in. The NHS has begun to embrace macrobiotic philosophy, and during our stay, we met with a woman that was diagnosed with bowel cancer. The NHS said there was nothing that could be done about it, but four in ten cases of cancer could be avoided by a better diet. Ken and Marie disagreed and took her under their wing. The change, even after a few days was noteworthy, gone was the sallow skin. And there were plenty of other miracle fixes and cures. Marie herself was a long term eczema sufferer, cured only after years of anguish by changing her diet to a macrobiotic one. Furthermore, Bill claims that the country is sitting on a diabetes time bomb, unless we change our way of living and thinking, we will have a very sick nation on our hands.

that the UK will have the same statistic in eight years if we continue the way we are. Following the program, I managed to lose four lbs over four days. Yes REALLY! Better still, with my Penninghame pack I could carry on the diet at home, buying the fresh produce I needed daily. I continued to lose weight following the diet, feel energized and overall healthier all-round. I will continue to follow a macrobiotic diet as much as possible, following the 80:20 rule advocated by the course leaders, allowing a little of the bad stuff in now and again, but only in moderation.

Penninghame offers a number of courses throughout the year – check the website (www.penninghame.org) for details. Accommodation is in the main house or in various lodges in the grounds. Rooms are comfortable with cotswold-produced organic Ila bath products chosen for their health benefits. All food served fits with macrobiotic principals. A health mini-break costs from £495. Tel +44 (0)1671 401 414 for more details. Marlene Watson-Tara’s Living with the Seasons – The Human Ecology Diet is available to buy in bookshops now.

It’s no secret that raw foods are better for you, as you get more of the vitamins from fresh, uncooked produce. The benefits of adding more raw fresh foods to your diet are far-reaching and include; weight loss, reduced cellulite, increased energy, healthier skin, hair and nails, and improved mental clarity. “Eating the botanical cuisine is a fantastic way to improve your overall physical and mental wellbeing and naturally detox” claim Raw Fairies. I embarked on the five day Mini B Cleanse ahead of my holiday to see if these promises were true. The daily deliveries made sticking to the diet fairly easy and for the first two days I was sent food parcels containing a selection of juices, smoothies and salads; delicious examples of which included the melon, lime and parsley smoothie with barley grass, the green smoothie with chlorella (marine algae) and spirulina - spaghetti made from courgette ribbons, red pepper and walnut bolognese. On day two I felt a little lethargic and suffered with a minor headache, so didn’t quite feel like a salad in the evening. But, by day three, which was my one-day ‘juice fast’, I was over the hump and bursting with energy. My skin was already brighter, I felt lighter and found my weight had dropped a few pounds. I didn’t find the one-day ‘juice fast’ problematic, seven smoothies was more than enough for the day. My body had quickly become accustomed to the smaller portions. I won’t profess to this being the easiest cleanse I have ever partaken in, probably

because I was on the go a lot and not sat on a beach in Thailand relaxing. However, it is relatively easy to follow the plan. I had minimum hunger pangs the first four days and the benefits of not having to think about what I was going to eat each day more than made up for these. Sadly, on the last day of the cleanse, I was in the unfortunate position of having to go to Goodwood with the Ed. If I didn’t know what hunger pangs were before, I certainly did afterwards. Burger joints screamed at me, luring me with their 100% organic grilled cheeseburgers. Cruel place to put me! No problem though, as after a minor fall off the wagon (a few strawberries and cream started me off); I found that I didn’t actually want that slab of greasy beef I had taken a few bites from. My stomach had shrunk to accommodate proper portion control and my body didn’t thank me for a carbohydrate and fat overload, however much my senses tried to convince me otherwise. I skipped back to the car to my final salad, feeling holier-than-thou and fabulous upon completion! The moral of the story is quality over quantity, much of what we eat and drink is superfluous, as I discovered. The most difficult part of the plan is in the actual implementation of the change; in realising that what we need is smaller amounts of a balanced menu of fresh foods that offer proper nutritional value, not the toxic, processed foodstuffs we are faced with each day. It’s all about making informed choices. The weight loss after the Mini B Cleanse was a great side effect, but the major benefit certainly came in the form of the increased vitality and improved mental clarity I felt afterwards, and a body that functions correctly rather than being lethargic, overworked by the toxins it needs to eliminate. This was an easy plan to follow if you have NO social engagements and remain in one place, preferably not surrounded by jovial, beer drinking burger buyers! A little more resolve is required if you are. Raw Fairies was most certainly worth it in the long term, the perfect urban detox for busy Londoners. For more information, log on to www.rawfairies.com

LONDON JEWELLERY WEEK 2011 – SPECIAL POST-SHOW FEATURE Feature by Leyla Abdollahi

So, after much excitement and a long build-up, the 4th annual London Jewellery Week has come and gone. With a packed schedule of events throughout the week, the trade, media and public had the opportunity to celebrate the capital’s collective effort in promoting the best of the UK jewellery sector. Established brands and upcoming designers showed their wares side-byside, with many a rising star making their mark in this competitive industry. Expectations were shaky to start with, given that we are still under the shadow of a recession, but that did little to dampen the spirits of all those that took part. And, the jewellery industry did not disappoint. There were plenty of scheduled events and spontaneous activities to keep even the most

discerning appeased. From open workshops to new collection launches, jewellery fashion shows and evening parties; it was indeed a successful week given the tough state of the economy.

Events

There were numerous events taking place throughout the week, which all had the aim of engaging the trade and consumer alike. Many of the specialist jewellery retailers hosted open evenings and Champagne receptions, as well as offering consultations and a behind-thescenes look at jewellery making. Some of the key events of the week included the launch of the Platinum Heritage Collection, sponsored by PureJewels, the Hatton Garden Festival and the Royal Exchange’s jewellery catwalk event. Other highlights included

the Central St. Martins Jewellery Award in association with Cool Diamonds, the launch of Alex Monroe’s Chrysanthemum collection at Liberty and Swarovski Gems, with Nadja Swarovski hosting the Gem Visions trend presentations for 2012 to a select group of invited guests.

Fairtrade and Ethical The issue of Fairtrade and ethically sourced goods and services across all industries have been biting at our collective consciousness for years. We’ve seen how small communities have been exploited for their coffee beans and bananas, and further up the food chain, precious minerals and diamonds. However, up til now, gold has pretty much remained under the radar. But thankfully change is afoot and the issue of fairmined gold is gaining momentum as the general consumer

becomes aware of the cost of mining to the small communities digging deep for our insatiable appetite for all things gold. So to launch Fairmined Gold and Essence at the ethical pavilion at Treasure, curated by Cred, the Fairtrade Foundation celebrated the occasion by hosting a VIP reception. Raising much needed awareness of the plight of small artisanal miners from around the world, and helping to raise standards through Fairtrade and fairmined certified gold, this was a tremendous opportunity to meet with some of the miners in attendance benefiting directly and the jewellery designers making a difference.

featured some great jewellery designs and concepts. Amongst some of my favourites were this year’s winners of the Treasure Designer of the Year award; Yunus & Eliza, showing some of their beautiful sculptural designs that have won them a big following from the movies and fashion circles. Others include Tomasz Donocik, with his fantasy collection, The Garden of Good & Evil. Jesper Velling, with his award-winning stunning vibrant colour diamond twist rings and Milena Kovanovic, with her clever use of vivacious gemstones inspired by the natural world.

Treasure

Over the next few pages, I have chosen some stand-out pieces from each collection - two from each designer, which were shown at Treasure. They are accompanied by a short description from the designers themselves. >

The designers showcasing at Treasure were a great mix of new and established names in jewellery. Over 120 designers and brands took part this year, which

Scuderia Ferrari One by Cabestan

Cabestan, the high-end Swiss watchmaker surprised the watch industry by announcing a partnership with Ferrari to jointly design and produce a very limited edition watch to celebrate the Cavallino Rampante. The Scuderia Ferrari One by Cabestan is inspired by Ferrari race car technology and design. High-tech materials such as titanium, aluminium, magnesium and carbon fibre are the same as those used to produce components of Ferrari Formula1 race cars. And as for the strap, Ferrari owners will recognise the unmistakable Daytona leather. The heart of the motor is a vertical tourbillon, to compensate the effects of the Earth’s gravity. Here the energy delivered to the movement is transmitted by a miniature chain and fusée using a 6-speed automatic transmission to deliver a constant force to the tourbillon. The result is amazingly accurate to ± 1 second per day. The Scuderia Ferrari One by Cabestan will only be made available to Ferrari clients. What is a chain and fusée? A chain and fusée enables the watchmaker to deliver a constant force to the movement. As a result, the tourbillon receives a constant force and the variations in amplitude are considerably reduced, thus dramatically increasing the accuracy of the movement. www.cabestan.ch www.ferrari.com

The manually-wound Calibre Parmigiani 372 (power reserve of 10 days) was designed in two planes in order to match the contours of the new Bugatti watch. Six sapphire crystals reveal its 337 impressive components and the ‘openworked’ oval dial, inclined on a 90-degree axis and made from carbon fibre in honour of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport, shows the hours and minutes. The ‘gold black’ Côtes de Genève and satin finishes on the bridges and the 3-dimensional turn-in angles on the train wheel bridge reflect Parmigiani’s exacting standards. Only 30 Haute Horlogerie pieces of this special edition will be delivered. www.parmigiani.ch www.bugatti.com

ELECTRIC BLUE – THE ROLLS ROYCE 102EX PHANTOM EXPERIMENTAL ELECTRIC Ataur Rahman spends a day at the Rolls Royce factory for a behind-thescenes tour of the production line and test-driving the most expensive concept electric car not to go into production – yet.

I

t’s not often that one gets a call from Rolls Royce with an invitation to the factory for a tour of the facilities and test-driving some of their cars. Naturally, this is a privilege usually reserved for Patrick, our Motoring Editor; however, since he was due to go off on a month-long honeymoon in Malaysia, and it has been a boyhood dream of mine to visit the factory of arguably the most prestigious automotive marque in the world, I was only too happy to oblige on his behalf.

The invitation was to test drive the 102EX Phantom Experimental Electric (EE), the world’s first battery electric vehicle for the ultra-luxury segment, which was due to go off on its world tour a week later. And the bonus of course was to get behind the wheels of the Phantom Extended Wheelbase and the Ghost whilst there. When the Phantom EE was presented at the Geneva Motor Show earlier in the year, it heralded a new era in the luxury car maker’s history. It immediately raised

the question of whether this was Rolls Royce’s bold move into the electric/dualfuel vehicles market. I remember my own reaction on hearing the news; which was one of excitement and wonder at the prospect of seeing an all-electric Rolls Royce on the roads. However, according to Rolls Royce, there are currently no plans to build a production version of this vehicle, even though the EE is a fully functioning, road-worthy model.

MOTORING

So the question begs, why build a roadgoing test vehicle if you are not planning to go into production with it? “Because we can” says Andrew martin, Chief Engineer of the Phantom EE. “We have the available technology and engineering know-how to build this car, as you can see. However, it’s not as straightforward as that, as we still have to conduct a lot of tests and evaluate the car from practical use and conditions, and that’s before we even consider the external dynamics, after-sales service and infrastructure.”

According to Rolls Royce, the idea behind the car is to offer an alternative drivetrain technology and start a dialogue based on the feedback generated from Rolls Royce owners, VIPs, the media and enthusiasts who get to drive the car during its global tour. The 102EX takes its lineage from the Rolls Royce Phantom. Built on the car’s ground-breaking aluminium spaceframe, the 6.75ltr V12 petrol engine and 6-speed gearbox have been replaced by the mother of all lithium ion battery packs

(the largest installed in a car) and two electric motors, which are connected to a single-speed transmission with integrated differential. Each of the motors are rated to 145KW, giving a maximum power output of 290KW with 800Nm of available torque, compared to 338KW for a standard Phantom with a maximum torque of 720Nm, delivered at 3,500rpm. In terms of power consumption, a full charge should give a range of about 200km from the 96 cell large format NCM (Lithium-Nickel-Cobalt-

Manganese-Oxide) battery pack. But the problem is the length of time it takes to achieve that – up to 20 hours from a conventional power source, although this can be reduced substantially using the three-phase or wireless induction charging system housed underneath the car, itself in experimental stage. Driving the car felt as one would expect of a Rolls Royce. The handling was not that different to the standard Phantom, which I drove immediately prior to the EE for a practical comparison, except a little slower getting off the mark and just a touch heavier at slow speeds and when turning corners. However it was business as usual at cruising speed and soon felt every bit a Phantom and was a joy to drive. Being an electric, it was eerily quiet of course, but the sound of the rushing wind coming from the tree-lined West Sussex roads and the slightly audible noise of the tyres were the only things I could pick up on. Naturally it’s missing the oomph factor when moving from standstill compared to a petrol Phantom, but I’m

told that this was an intentional design consideration, especially given that it’s not aimed at speed junkies. Rather it’s more about the ‘refined driving experience’, which, for the car makes a lot of sense. The only down side to the polished finish was that there’s no built-in creep, so you really have to be on the ball when at an uphill incline at very low speeds or near stand-still, as the car will roll backwards and potentially stall. As for the craftsmanship, the EE ticks all boxes of the usual Rolls Royce refinement. From the exterior finish in Atlantic Chrome, the coordinated interior dashboard - using highly reflective ceramic nano-particles and wooden veneers, to the delicate Seton Corinova (an experimental chrome free vegetable-tanned leather) used for the seats, armrests and floor. Other details include modified components on the dashboard such as the fuel gauge being replaced by a battery indicator and the power reserve, a standard in all Phantoms, is now a ‘regeneration’ symbol conveying the degree of charging taking

place when the vehicle is in motion. But the most noticeable element has to be the Spirit of Ecstacy. Made out of Makrolon, instead of stainless steel, it’s illuminated in blue LED light, a further nod at the vehicles electric credentials As a concept car, Rolls Royce have clearly outdone themselves with the 102EX considering it took just over six months to produce the car, from the drawing board to the finished product. It is a beautiful and elegant car, and everything a Rolls Royce ought to be, but could I see myself ordering one with my future lottery winnings? Probably not is the answer, as like the Phantom, it’s a car to be driven in. I am more of a driver, so I have my eyes set on the Ghost, which in my opinion is the fiery beast that needs taming, and boy did I have some fun doing just that! But that’s for another day... ONTARIO CANADA

A six-day urban city break in TORONTO and OTTAWA

Feature by Ataur Rahman

CN Tower

I have been planning on a Canada trip for as long as I can remember. And having travelled south of the border to its neighbouring USA on many occasions in the past, it has always been a desire to see if it really does live up to its reputation as one of the safest and most beautiful countries in the world. Well, I can most definitely say it does. And it certainly is a vast country, the 2nd largest in the world in fact, which is blessed with spectacular scenic beauty and rugged wilderness that is hard to match anywhere. Its many provinces offer an unrivalled range of travel options; from ultra-modern urban cities to the great outdoors. Whether you are an urban junkie, culture buff, foodie or an adventurer, Canada has it all wrapped up and ready for you to explore at your leisure. And if you follow current affairs, you’ll have noticed Canada has been hitting the headlines recently during the much publicised Royal visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on their first official overseas trip. The land of Mounties and maple syrup is about to see an increase in tourism, not least from the UK. My original plan however was to do a winter trip, with activities like dog sledding and snowboarding as part of my experience. But once the thought of

all that snow hit me, which of course is a little different in Canada to what we are used to here in London, and the burning desire to see and experience as much as possible on my first trip with freedom of movement, I decided to opt for an early summer one instead. So with travelling companion in tow, our trip in late May was to the state of Ontario, Canada’s second largest province - almost twice the size of Texas - or France, Germany and Italy combined.

cultural and financial capital of the nation, and similar to London and New York, is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world. Located on the north-western shore of Lake Ontario (one of the five great lakes of North America), it offers a wide range of options when planning for a trip. Whether you are into nature and the outdoors, or a city type with a taste for the arts, fine dining, shopping or nightlife, you will have plenty to keep you occupied for the duration of your trip.

We split our time between the über-cool, fast paced Toronto, and, by contrast, the genteel capital city of Ottawa. When we arrived, the last days of spring were making way for the summer months, so even though it was sunny and fairly hot, you still got the occasional breeze giving you the chills and reminding you of what it would be like during the winter. Due to the sheer size and geography, the climate does vary from east to west and north to south, so worth checking ahead for weather conditions and appropriate attire, particularly either side of June-September.

For my travelling companion and I, ours begun by flying direct from Gatwick into Toronto Pearson International airport with Canadian Affair (www.canadianaffair.com). After a minor hiccup at check-in (they couldn’t find my name on the passenger list), we had a pretty uneventful flight, landing late in the afternoon.

Toronto

The first leg of our trip starts in Toronto, Canada’s largest city with a population of around 2.6 million people (double that for the Greater Toronto Area). It’s also the

We had a courtesy car waiting to take us to the Ritz Carlton, located downtown, a 45-minutes drive away. Our driver avoided the rush hour traffic on the highways and took us via the more scenic route along Lake Ontario, one of the largest fresh water lakes in the world. As we drove closer to the city centre, we could see the landscape changing, giving us a glimpse of the city skyline with its high-rise towers dotted along the way.

TRAVEL

You can’t help but notice the shiny new buildings along the way, all looking pristine and glistening in the late afternoon sun. They reminded me of my time in Dubai, but minus the cranes and the noise of construction everywhere. The city has that fresh, ‘just finished’ look and feel about it, especially as there seem to be more properties than the people to sustain them. But I suppose the sheer scale of the city does play a part, and whereas we are used to seeing masses of people throughout all hours, it’s hard to make a comparison as everything here is super-sized, and takes some getting used to, especially if we compare in terms of numbers. Toronto offers a wide variety of hotels to suit all tastes and budgets, with most of the major brands represented. The Ritz Carlton (www.ritzcarlton.com) is one of a handful of new build 5-star hotels that are popping up all over Toronto. Others include the Thompson, the Hazelton and the much hyped Trump Toronto due for opening later in the summer. I’ve always been a fan of the Ritz Carlton, but never had the opportunity to stay with them, so it was a great choice in this instance. Standing tall at 53 storeys, it’s a fairly tall building, and holds itself well surrounded by the skyscrapers towering all around it. It’s also located in the heart of downtown Toronto, which meant we were a few minutes cab ride away from most of the hot spots, so it was a perfect base to go exploring from. Our deluxe club room was facing Toronto’s most iconic architectural feature, the CN Tower (www.cntower.com), although there is the option to have a lake view on the other side. Either way, you get some stunning views across the city or the lake.

Ritz Carlton

Holt Cafe

Dining

As you would expect of any cosmopolitan city, there are a myriad of restaurants and cuisines to choose from in Toronto, and with over 8000 of them spread throughout the city you’d be pretty hard pressed to not find something to suit your taste. For our first night we had dinner at Toca, the Ritz Carlton’s fine dining restaurant run by chef Tom Brodi. A bit of a local celebrity, Brodi’s first signature restaurant offers a ‘Canadian’ menu, using locally sourced produce. Classic dishes are given a contemporary twist, something that reflects Brodie’s own heritage. Recommended dishes: Glazed British Columbia Black Cod, with broccoli hash, soya beans and pine nuts, and the Baked Organic Rock Hen, with roasted 100 km roots and foie gras butter. Both dishes were delicious, but the chicken was exceptionally memorable with the foie gras butter. For desserts, try the Maple Walnut Soufflé. The next day, we had lunch at the Holt Cafe in the super trendy Holt Renfrew department store (www. holtrenfrew.com). Housing almost every luxury brand under the sun from Alexander McQueen to Zac Posen, this is the equivalent of Selfridges with its designer-led fashion and lifestyle brands. In fact, it is actually owned by the billionaire Weston family, who also happen to own Selfridges.

Toronto International Film Festival

Thompson hotel

As you would expect, it’s a busy place full of shoppers and the ladies who lunch brigade, but it has this fast moving pace with lively service so it was packed out as one would expect. The fare wasn’t too bad either, which were light and tasty, so leaving you feeling not too bloated for the continued shopping. Recommended dishes: Grilled Oyster Mushrooms, with polenta and pecorino cheese, the Cedar Smoked Seafood Medley with salmon, calamari, scallop, shrimp, and mussels, served with chef’s vegetables, and the Chicken Pot Pie with crimini mushrooms and fall vegetables, topped with buttery puff pastry.

Jason Parsons

Our last night in Toronto included dinner at Scarpetta in the Thompson hotel (www.thompsonhotels.com) located in the King West Village, a trendy up-andcoming neighbourhood full of the art and creative circles (kind of a Hoxton-meetsMayfair set). The hotel itself reminded me of the St. Martins Lane hotel when it opened years ago. It was heaving with a young and hip crowd, packed into the lobby bar restaurant. But the coolest hang out of all was one of the trendiest bars in the city, the Sky Bar on the roof top. With its amazing all round view of the Toronto skyline it was hard to top, and operates a strict guestlist policy. We gate crashed the party later, naturally. Going back to the food, it was exceptional Italian and was worth making the late night trip for. Recommended dishes: the menu changes regularly I recommend you try a couple of their signature dishes; Spaghetti with Tomato & Basil and the Creamy Polenta with fricasse of truffled mushrooms.

Sightseeing:

Following lunch at the Holt Cafe on the second day, we went on a walking tour of the city, taking in some iconic buildings and key neighbourhoods along the way. A number of museums and galleries are all within walking distance from one another, including the Royal Ontario Museum of cultures and natural history (www.rom.on.ca). The Daniel Libeskind designed Lee-Chin ‘crystal’ is the striking architectural masterpiece which takes centre stage in the ROM’s attraction. Other museums worth keeping in mind include the Art Gallery of Ontario (www.ago.net) for contemporary art, and for all you fashionistas, the Bata Shoe Museum (www.batashoemuseum. com), which will take you on a historical tour of over 12000 shoes and artefacts spanning over 4,500 years. If you love your shoes, this is where you want to be.

There are various neighbourhoods with lots of boutique shops, galleries, cafes and restaurants (King Street, John Street, Kensington Market etc.), so plenty of options if you fancy a leisurely walk and taking in the sights. Most are within walking distance, but occasional cab or transit use is recommended.

Niagara

If you are in Toronto, it would be unthinkable to not make time to go to Niagara Falls! It’s approximately a two and half hour drive, depending on road conditions, and ought to be set aside as a day trip. We used Budget (www.budget. ca) to get a small car, a 2-door Fiat (note to self: in future, must get a bigger car or 4x4 for any North American long distance driving!). Once you get off the highway, the drive is very pleasant through the beautiful wine country. There are plenty of vineyards dotted along the way, but we stopped off for lunch at the renowned Peller Estate Winery (www.peller.com). The Peller Estate is a third-generation family run winery, located in the beautiful Niagara-on-the-Lake and is a mustsee for any wine enthusiast heading to Niagara Falls. They offer various group and individual tours of the estate and cellars, along with wine tasting and food pairing sessions under the watchful eyes of Master Winemaker, Lawrence Buhler and one of Canada’s most famous celebrity chefs, Jason Parsons. During our brief visit we had the lunchtime tasting menu, with wine pairing which

my travelling companion enjoyed very much. As I personally don’t drink, I couldn’t help but feel slightly left out as the sommelier was bringing out one vintage after another complimenting the delicious dishes created using seasonal fresh produce, much of which is sourced locally or grown within the winery’s own gardens. The tasting menu changes frequently, depending on available produce, although an A La Carte menu is also available throughout lunch and dinner services. I have to say, we had such a lovely time, especially when chef Parson (charm personified) joined us for a chat that we didn’t realise we missed our next stop on the schedule until it was too late. We were due to ride on the Maid of the Mist (www.maidofthemist.com), one of the oldest attractions of the whole Niagara experience. The boat takes you right under the roaring falls, so you get to experience the sheer majesty of Niagara first hand. Alas we missed it, but our

next stop more than made up for it – and we had the added advantage of staying dry in the process. Niagara Helicopters (www. niagarahelicopters.com) offers regular aerial tours of the Falls, run by the gregarious Ruedi Hafen, the Chief Pilot and President of this successful tourist attraction. The man is an inspiration, and we had the pleasure of being entertained by him and his rags-to-riches story of his arrival from Switzerland back in the early 80s and turning around the fortunes of this once dilapidated operation. As the only helicopter company licensed to fly over the Falls in Canada, there is an insatiable demand for the tours each and every day, so booking ahead is advised. And as the Falls are probably on everyone’s list of places to see, you really must do it from an aerial perspective to appreciate its sheer size and scale. Depending on the schedule, you may also get a glimpse of the surrounding area and the vineyards dotted around near the basin, although bespoke tours can be arranged.

Ottawa

We used Porter Airlines (www.flyporter. com) for our short internal flight to

Ottawa on a Bombardier Q400 turboprop. It was a quiet flight with only four or five other passengers, which felt a little eerie. I tried to liven things up a little by asking the stewardess if I could see the captain’s cabin. After many questions asking why and what my intentions were, they declined pretty sternly. After about half an hour, I think realising I wasn’t about to hijack the plane, the stewardess thawed a bit and decided to make up for the cold looks and spoil me with a ton of the most delicious ginger digestives I have ever tasted. I wasn’t complaining – she had found my weakness. Our journey to the hotel was in a YOW airport shuttle (www.yowshuttle.com), running every half hour. It’s not a bad service, if you’re ok sharing the mini bus with a few others, and is a nicer alternative to take the scenic route downtown. The driver was exceptionally knowledgeable and on finding out the purpose of my visit, decided to give a very detailed commentary on the cultural and historical sights of interest along the way. Beats a cabbie any day.

ByWard Market

Our stay in Ottawa was at the iconic Chateau Laurier (www.fairmont.com/ laurier), one of Canada’s most famous landmarks. This is the hotel of choice for visiting royalties, VIPs and other dignitaries when visiting the capital city, and has a fascinating history going back nearly a century. It’s located minutes away from Parliament Hill, and is close to all the major attractions of the city. We arrived a few days before the end of the famous Tulip Festival (www. tulipfestival.ca), a major summer attraction – the biggest of its kind in the world, with lots of events and activities taking place across the city. There are lots of attractions to whet the appetite, and vary depending on the seasons. Amongst these is the ‘Foods of the ByWard Market’ tour (www.cestboncooking.ca), which will appeal to foodies. It’s a walking tour of the market, taking in the various stalls, shops and specialty food outlets combining mini tasting sessions of locally produced foods. We got to meet a third-generation maple syrup maker, so that was quite interesting and certainly gave me an insight in to this very Canadian of specialties.

was somebody’s house). However, once inside, it was completely the opposite of what I envisioned. It was a tiny place, quite unassuming and informal, with around 10-12 tables in a slightly rectangular room.

The next stop was at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum (www. aviation.technomuses.ca), for a ride on a 1930s biplane. This was a highlight of the entire trip, as it fulfilled one of my many boyhood dreams. The vintage open-cockpit Waco UPF-7 provides daily flights (conditions permitting - check in advance for availability), over some of Ottawa’s most famous landmarks, although I found myself too pre-occupied with the whole thrilling experience of the noise and fumes to pay much attention to them. Goggles and helmet provided scarf optional...

Dining

Our first night’s dinner was at Atelier (www.atelierrestaurant.ca), a muchhyped über trendy restaurant, with a waiting list as long as your arm! So cool is this restaurant that you’d have to make sure you have the correct address, as not even cabbies know of its existence, as we found to our amusement. And neither the barren location, there was not a soul in sight in any direction for miles, nor the absence of any signage help matters either, which meant I actually told the cabbie to wait whilst knocking on the front door (of what I assumed

So far it’s ticked all the right boxes for a cool destination restaurant, but how would the food fare? Well, I’m pleased to say it didn’t disappoint, and fully lived up to expectations of a ‘gastronomic experience’. The restaurant is run by chef/owner Marc Lepine, and serves a 12-course (blind) tasting menu, with optional wine pairing. Micro-dishes such as ‘bubbles’, ‘nachos’ and ‘wagyu’ are created using molecular science rather than conventional cooking techniques, so expect your palate to be teased and tantalised by an explosion of flavours and textures over the course of three hours. For adventurous foodies and not for the faint hearted, so be prepared. For our last night, we headed over to Restaurant e18ihteen (www.restaurant18. com), a modern fine dining restaurant within walking distance of the Chateau Laurier. It’s slick, contemporary decor, spruced up with numerous mixed media artworks and contrasting textures, makes for an elegant setting. The restaurant has an upmarket following due to its central location and is apparently well regarded for its steakhouse and seafood menu. The kitchen is run by Matthew Carmichael, 18’s award-winning Executive Head Chef, who has created a varied menu based on seasonal availability. The food was good, but service cold and very slow, especially given that it wasn’t that busy, which is a shame as it would have really made our last night.

As an urban destination, Ottawa has the intimate feel of a small town, rather than a city. However, this is its charm and appeal, which will suit those that are looking for a laid back or family holiday. Unlike Toronto, it’s missing that buzz, which goes with the city’s position as the seat of government, so whilst it has a lot of grace, it lacks the panache of a vibrant urban destination. However, don’t let that put you off, as there are a wealth of things to do and see if you want to immerse yourself in some culture and history, as Ottawa has a long list of national museums and galleries. In addition, it’s got a stellar reputation for its small but growing experimental restaurants scene, which is seen as ahead of its game (Atelier for example) due to its high-level international visitors. There is also a growing real estate market, which is attracting domestic and overseas investors due to the favourable market conditions. So although it’s a small city compared to Toronto with a population of under a million, it’s still the 4th largest city in Canada and the 2nd largest in Ontario. I would suggest this as a starting point for anyone planning on a Canadian trip, as it’s a great snapshot of what awaits you in the rest of the country. As for the famous Canadian hospitality? Well, let’s just say I’m already planning my next trip...

ART AND CULTURE

THE DESIGN MUSEUM RE-LOCATES TO THE FORMER COMMONWEALTH INSTITUTE

The Design Museum has just announced a major donation from one of its longterm supporters, Sir Terence Conran towards the relocation and development of the museum in its new home in Kensington, in what was the former Commonwealth Institute. The Grade II listed building will replace the existing site on Shad Thames, and provide a much bigger space to showcase world-class design and creative excellence in what will be a much more accessible site. Located on the southern fringes of Holland Park on Kensington high Street, it will completely transform the area and revitalise a valuable space which has been abandoned for over a decade. Work on the new site is expected to be

completed by 2014, with assistance coming from Lord Cunliffe and James Sutherland, a member of the original architectural design team and structural engineer respectively, who will be on hand to guide and advise. This will undoubtedly ensure the re-design remains sympathetic to the 1960s icon of modernism, which is now in the hands of architects John Pawson for the interiors and Rem Koolhaas for the adjacent residential developments. Commenting on the announcement, Deyan Sudjic, Director of the Design Museum stated “Terence Conran has transformed Britain. His contribution to the way we live, eat, and shop over six decades has been enormous. The gift to the Design Museum is a hugely generous investment in the future. By making

our ambition to move to the former Commonwealth Institute much more achievable, he makes possible a project that will give the museum three times as much space as it has now. The new Design Museum will be the definitive voice of contemporary design, reinforcing Britain’s place as one of the world’s leading creative economies.” We welcome this news with a great deal of excitement, a sentiment most Londoners will share as we see an iconic building finally being put to good use following years of disuse and neglect. DIAMOND JUBILEE BLENDED SCOTCH WHISKY BY JOHN WALKER & SONS

Celebrating 60 years of the reign of Her Majesty The Queen with a limited edition commemorative Whisky

As we start the countdown for The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee next year, Royal Warrant holders John Walker & Sons will be producing a limited edition Scotch whisky to commemorate the occasion. 60 crystal decanters, one for each year of Her Majesty’s reign, will be produced and offered for private sale by invitation at £100,000 each. All profits from the sale, with a guarantee of at least £1million, will go to the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST), the charitable arm of the Royal Warrant Holders Association The lead crystal decanters will feature a half carat diamond set by hand, with a Britannia silver collar and individually numbered silver seals. The bespoke cabinet made from woods sourced from The Queen’s Sandringham and Balmoral estates will include a pair of hand-engraved lead crystal glasses and a leather bound, personalised, hand-embellished artefact book. Jim Beveridge, Master Blender for John Walker & Sons said: “These are extraordinary grain and malt whiskies that have been maturing slowly since 1952. It’s a huge privilege to work with them using all our resources and experience to craft a John Walker & Sons blend that’s fitting for this special anniversary. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” Sixty editions of ‘Diamond Jubilee by John Walker & Sons’ will be bottled on 6th February 2012, exactly 60 years to the day since The Queen acceded to the Throne. Partner benefits:

This is an alternative to the massmarket discount schemes currently proliferating the consumer sector. The aim of the Black Card is to provide access to businesses that want to target a high-end audience, but without resorting to discounting their products and services to the extremes that we are seeing with numerous mass discount websites. Our readers are not bargain hunters; therefore we are not looking for one-off gimmics. But what we are looking for is a longer term proposition, which encourages repeat business and customer loyalty, which is a win-win for all parties.

How to get involved: If you are an individual interested in a membership, please visit the website and sign up online. If you are a business owner and wish to discuss partnership opportunities, please call or email us using the contact details below: Tel: 0871 989 8206 Email: partnership@privileged-life.net www.privileged-life.net

NIGHTLIFE

IN AND AROUND TOWN WITH FUNKY NORA... It’s been so long since I’ve hit the circuit, it feels as though I’ve just come out of retirement! Oh my, things are finally looking up in the West End, with quite a few movements in the upmarket nightlife circles. And dare I say it, but we may be looking at an interesting summer after all. Maybe I’ll hold off my summer sabbatical for a little while longer...

THE BOX

For those of you who are familiar with the New York social scene, you’ll be excited to know that the Box has recently crossed over to our shores, and opened up bang in the middle of Soho. It actually opened at the end of last year, but I’m mentioning it now as it’s in context to a much needed update of current happenings, including the two openings below. Given its debauched reputation across the waters from days gone by, it’ll be interesting to see if they can re-create the magic that once had the great and the good flocking to the venue every night. It was the hottest place in NYC by miles, but as with all good things that come to an end, they have seen better days. However, all is not lost, and of course for most Londoners who’ve never heard of the club or been to it in NYC, this will be a whole new experience. Let’s hope they keep their door policy in check as it could turn the other way very quickly into a hen parties haven, thus alienating their target audience of those that will give it longevity. Check it out, but just make sure you leave mother at home! www.theboxnyc.com

ONE FOR ONE PARK LANE

I’m quite excited about the next venue on our list. What used to be Taman Gang, the pan-Asian restaurant (first opened by the owners of Chinawhite), has now been completely re-vamped and re-launched as the swanky 141 Park Lane members club. If you happen to know the former restaurant’s history or simply remember the fabulous pan-Asian cuisine they used to serve, you will no doubt feel a slight lump in your throat for how things turned sour for the once beautiful place following years of neglect at the hands of successive new management. However, on a positive note, we quite like the venue in its current guise as 141, and it’s not too bad at all. So much so, we’ve even hosted our own Fashion & Media party there recently during London Jewellery Week, with plans for possibly

more in the future. And, so far the new owners (Vladimir Gelev (Embassy, 50 Below and more recently, Whisky Mist) and relative newcomer to the club scene, Liron Ozeri, seem to be in no rush to pack it in, so quality, at least for now, seems to be the order of the day. For those of you not familiar with the venue, it’s located on Park Lane, underneath the Marriott hotel (Marble Arch end). It’s spacious (they’ve completely opened it up) and fairly well laid out. The central focal point is the long bar on the left as you enter the club, with a raised area with table seating facing it on the right. Towards the rear there’s a very dimly lit area to the right with more seating, so perfect for those that just want to stay incognito, whereas by contrast on the opposite side to the left, is the start of the VIP section with white booths and bright lighting to go with it – perfect for those that like to be ‘seen’. The central space is open, so it becomes the dancefloor, with a big screen at the back streaming videos in sync with the music. So far it’s been pretty good the few times I’ve been down. Music seems to be consistent, which is sadly a rarity these days and the atmosphere is fairly good. But, it’s still early days, so it will be interesting to see how the operation evolves after the summer quiet. www.141parklane.com

NIGHTLIFE

THE PLAYBOY CLUB

And finally, the bunnies are back!

After nearly 30 years of absence, the Playboy Club has returned to London, opening not far from where the old venue used to be at 45 Park Lane. A multi-room operation, the club is attempting to recreate the old magic from its heyday back in the swinging 60s. On the ground floor there’s the main lounge area, which is run by cocktail maestro Salvatore Calabrese. There’s a nightclub and bar on the other side and the 1st floor is where the gaming room and restaurant are located, along with an outside terraced area for the smoking brigade. There’s even a Gentlemen’s Tonic concession, adding a touch of decadence to those late nights that many will no doubt spend here. When Hugh Hefner first opened the Playboy Club in London back in 1966, it was undoubtedly the hottest thing in town, attracting some of biggest names of stage and screen – from George Best, Sean Connery, Roger Moore and Jack Nicholson to Joan Collins, Michael Caine and Muhammad Ali. Looking at some of the archives, you can’t help but wish to have been there, such was the allure of the age of glamour and decadence. But times have changed and we live in an era of fleeting fads, so the question is why re-open after an absence of thirty years? “The opportunity presented itself. We’ve been out of the gaming business for a number of years and the brand went

into hibernation during the conservative decades of the 1980s and 90s. But over the last ten years, the brand has become hot again - part of that was because of the global phenomena of the television shows, and about three years ago we returned to the casino business with a Playboy Club casino in Las Vegas. In the last few months we’ve opened in Macau and Cancun, but the one we were really looking forward to was London, because back in the 60s and 70s the hottest of all the Playboy Clubs around the world was London”, stated Hugh Hefner during a conversation with our Editor-in-Chief. The brand is without doubt controversial, and throughout its history has had to come up against those that don’t agree with dressing women in bunny costumes. And the recent opening saw that once more with feminists groups taking up placards outside the club on its opening night. But it seems Hef just shrugged it all off with the nonchalance of a man who’s been there and done that so it was nothing new that they were bringing. As a girlfriend pointed out, Playboy is easy pickings, because we never see or hear of any of these protestors outside any of the numerous strip joints around town. I’d rather see bunny ears and a fluffy tail to wearing nothing at all. But that’s just me... www.playboyclublondon.com
