Managua is a city with a very low population density and strong urban sprawl caused by an earthquake in 1972. Vacant spaces, especially in the city center, were populated by migrants from rural areas and by others, most with a low-income level, who were looking for a place in the city where they could settle. 40 years after the earthquake, the development of the historic center of Managua still shows many deficits and challenges, caused by this devastating event. Managua deals with the sustainable development of a traditional neighborhood in the historic center of the city. By implementing the community-based methodology of the “Urban Design Laboratory” the Urban Strategy leads to specific urban design proposals for the City of Managua as a result of a 4-month working process.
