here are so many talented individuals out there that are doing positive things and giving back to the community; however, they are hardly ever recognized for what they do. Although, most of them probably don’t do what they do to get recognized, we still want to recognize them.
A year ago I decided to bring my magazine dreams to life. So in July 2010, Urban Centric was born. Each issue of Urban Centric is dedicated to those individuals in our communities who are seen as role models.
Our Youth need more positive role models in their lives. The media is full of the Beyonce’s, Lil Wayne’s, Ciara’s, etc; and that is who most of the magazines want on the front of their covers.
Urban Centric is achieving to be different than the rest of the pack. We want YOU on the front of our covers. Stay tuned each quarter to see more and exiting new people who just may be your next door neighbor.

Keeping Our Children Safe Danger Man is out fighting crime.
Interview done by. Naomi MzNay Bonman
Back in the day the com-
munity was super safe for youth. Teenagers could walk down the street to the corner store with no worries in the world; however, times have changed dramatically. In the world that we are living in today, kids can’t even walk across the street without having to worry about someone pulling up on them with a gun or drugs. Kids are exposed to too much in today’s society and they need more role models and adults to help steer them in the right direction. I had the opportunity to interview someone who is helping to keep the streets safe for our Youth. His achievements and what he is doing for our youth is AMAZING! So with that being said I introduce to some and re-introduce to others, Danger Man. Urban Centric: So what motivated you to start The Dangerman Education
Foundation Inc.? Danger Man: I started the foundation 14 years ago. A Hispanic’s family 4 year old daughter was shot. I seen that our kids were in danger and decided to create Danger Man to encourage kids to succeed. UC: That is awesome. So what type of events do you attend as Danger Man? DM: Most of the events involve the youth, such as literacy events, health events. I’ve done walks for breast cancer. Everything ties into what I do which is keeping the kids safe. UC: What type of events do you have planned for 2011? DM: We have events planned at different venues, going out to the schools and talking to the kids. We also have festivals planned. I will be having a book signing for my first book. There is also an action film in the works, which is on the Entertainment side of the foundation. We also will be starting an Action/Adventure web series, where
UC: Sounds good. You said you are getting ready to release your first book. What type of book will it be? DM: It will be an action/ adventure graphic novel. UC: From your experience as Danger Man, what has been some of the major issues that Youth face? What are some of the main reasons, in your opinion, of why youth face these issues? And how can the community step up and help? DM: Kids are dropping out of school, as a community we need to reclaim our youth so that they will stay in school. Parents need to also be aware of what their kids are doing and who they are texting. We need to step up and be role models. Kids need to have a diploma or at least a G.E.D. so that they can become responsible adults. UC: Do you think that the community is doing enough for our youth? Why or Why not? DM: No, because we need to be careful with the images that youth are exposed to. The community is too

involved in their own lives, that they aren’t controlling what the Youth are exposed to.
UC: There doesn’t seem to be a lot of youth programs out there and if there are, they aren’t being recognized. How can we push our youth programs so they will be better recognized? DM: Get involved. Market the youth programs. And outreach. Reach out to the programs by making phone calls, emailing them; it’s all about talking to the right people.
10
UC: I read on your website that you owned and operated one of the largest security firms in Denver. How was your experience in that field? DM: It was good. It was the only African American and Minority Company. There were several opportunities that came to it because of that. UC: What are some of your dreams and aspirations for the Urban Community? DM: That we will be able to get away from these negative images so that we can move ahead. UC: What advice do you have for the youth that are struggling to find out who they are and want to be in life? DM: Think outside of the box. If you have creative vibes and skills, that’s what you pursue. Find out how you can be unique. Dress for success. Work hard. Think Big. Dream Big. Never give up. Also find someone to talk to; don’t hold it in and keep moving forward. UC: What can we except to see from Danger Man in the future? DM: T-shirts, caps, mugs, books, DVDs, and more film as we continue to grow. Stop Snitchin Movement By. Curl J. Louis
this senseless violence against somebody they know.
As it says in the bible, “Do unto others as you want others to do unto you.” If you want people to speak for you it is only fair that you stand up and speak for somebody else and not wait until it hits close to you and yours. When we do not speak out against this stop the snitchin movement we are simply saying that it is justified to do harm unto somebody else and allow them to commit heinous crimes and allow them to walk away as if nothing happened because they know people support the stop snitchin movement.
How many innocent brothers and sisters will we lose to this nonsense of a movement? How many more mothers will we hear crying in the streets clinging to the body of their child asking the lord “Why lord why you had to take my baby?” Are we not tired of seeing a black hearse followed by a caravan of cars bringing another life cut short to its final resting place? Are we not tired of buying t-shirts with the ones we love on the front of them with their alpha and omega? Let’s put an end to this so called “Stop Snitchin’ Movement,” before we wind up extinct as the dinosaurs with our bones in somebody’s museum, and in front of us some plaque written by some scientist determining how we lived and died off.
We have to stand for something or we will die for nothing. As Dee-1 stated in his rap “Ancestors of ours are screaming from the graves cause physically we’re free, but we’re still some mental slaves.”
Now I truly understand the message and meaning behind his words. Stand up for a movement that’s worth living, fighting for, and has a moral meaning Stop The Violence.
T
his so called movement of stop snitchin has gotten out of hand we have lost far too many good brothers and sisters to this so called movement. First what is a movement? A movement is defined as: 1) a series of actions and events taking place over a period of time and working to foster a principle or policy; a movement toward world peace; 2) An organized effort by supporters of a common goal.”
In what human way possible is stop snitchin a series of events working to foster a means of principle towards world peace? It is however, organized by supporters with a misguided common goal with one simple meaning, “ignorance is bliss.”
How can you stand for or support something that has no moral means for changing what is not right in your neighborhood or your own community with nonsense of stop snitchin or not going against the “The Street Code.” The streets has never nor will ever have such a code, but if it did surely it would not be on the grounds of not speaking out on something that is not right, but would have a more meaningful code as to “Live your life and may it be fruitful by all means.”
The killer part about this ridiculous movement is that those same people who stand for this stop snitchin movement are the same ones who want to cry wolf when the situation hits close to home, and want people to speak up and bring justice to the ones who committed

M.I. Release Video for ‘Undisputed’ Delivers on MI2 Movie Theme By. Jude Nebo
The Mohit crew that consists of Don Jazzy,
Dbanj, Wande Coal, Dr Sid, D Prince and Kswitch, are known to be a formidable force in the Nigerian music industry. In recent news, Dbanj features Snoop dogg on Mr Endowed remix, which is a huge boost in their career. This gives them more international explosure. But the latest gist in town now is that there are indications that the Mohit crew may feature Kanye West on one of their newest songs pretty soon. A source close to the crew confirmed this to Nigeriafilms.com that they’ve met with him and Kanye West himself tweeted some hours ago that he is expecting them.

M.I. released his latest album MI2 calling it a movie album with many confused as to where he was headed until the release which he failed to make listeners understand still, with many seeing it as a publicity stunt to generate interest in the album.
However, it seems the rapper might deliver on his movie theme for the album as his recent video for the first single off the album released midnight titled ‘Undisputed’ shows a continuation which might be translated into a new video and eventually a movie.

ormer young Nigerian Idol Contestant, Tonii has released two singles barely two weeks after she exited the reality TV show. Both songs - «Iwo Ni Ma Ba lo» and «I Rule,» solely written and composed by the artist, clearly project her versatility in neo-soul, R-n-B, Pop and Contemporary Naija Vibes. It is therefore not a surprise that following her exit from the show, the media was filled with the buzz
that Audu Maikori’s Chocolate City, which also parades stars like M.I., Jesse Jags and Ice Prince has indicated interest in offering her a record deal. While she was on show Audu and the other judges constantly commended her musical range and vocal strength.
In September 2010, just before she auditioned for the Nigerian Idol contest, Tonii thrilled friends, family and guests from the music industry and media agents at her debut performance held at De Marquee Restaurant & Lounge Bar, an upscale entertainment and relaxation spot in Victoria Island, Lagos. The event was sponsored by Martini and Bacardi. Born as Oluwatoni Afolayan and raised in the quiet town of Ilorin in Kwara State, where she also bagged a BSC in Microbiology from the University of Ilorin, Tonii started singing at an early age and has since been trained by renowned musicians including Peter King, the
legendary jazz artist and saxophonist, under whose tutelage she honed her vocal and piano skills. Tonii is definitely one upcoming artist you should look out for in 2011.

Liivng Out Loud with Moca Hey Sunshines!!!!! It’s me, Moca!!! Just wanted to briefly introduce myself and my new column. This column is designed to doing just what the title says...Living Out Loud. I will discuss and give advice about life and everything that comes along with it. I’m an ordinary woman with extraordinary insight. I’m very opinionated and I don’t hesitate to speak my mind. Now what you read you may not always agree with and that’s fine. Agreeing to disagree is healthy dialogue. What I write is not gospel but it is MOCA, Living Out Loud!!! So, I hope you Laugh, Learn, and Live Out Loud through this column.
Hey Moca, So, I met this guy and on the surface he seems cool and put together. He opens doors, pulls out chairs, asks about my day, pays attention to me and so forth. Basically, I have only one complaint…he admits he’s a ‘momma’s boy’. Now, because I’ve never had to deal with this issue before, I thought why not ask others what they think. From the few times we’ve been out and talked he’s referred to his mother several times. She has actually called in the middle of some of our dates. (he answers) And according to him they talk EVERYDAY. So my question is, ‘What are the pros and cons of dating a momma’s boy?’ Should I move forward in this relationship? Waying My Odds Cleveland, OH
14
Waying My Odds. Let me start by saying if it is the desire of your heart to be in a committed relationship with a guy that possess the qualities you listed the God will provide. Wait. With that being said, nobody is perfect and deciding what flaws you can deal with is half the battle. I think dating a ‘momma’s boy’ does have its advantages, aside from the ones you mentioned. They tend to pay more attention to a woman’s emotions. They actually listen tentatively and are able to have a conversation about something other than sex and sports. In essence most ‘momma’s boys’ know how to treat a woman. But such is life there are some negatives that come along with a ‘momma’s boy’. The most obvious one is detachment or the lack there of. For whatever reason it has been proven difficult for some of these guys to truly separate from their beloved mothers. I mean not a days passes or a decision made without consulting mom. This type of behavior can be problematic. Especially if your in a serious relationship or married. The bible says, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his MOTHER and hold fast to his WIFE, and THEY shall become ONE flesh. Genesis 2:18, 21-24. If he finds it difficult to separate your relationship from that of his mother, I only have one thing to say… ..”Molly, you in danger girl!!!!!” Now, as I stated earlier, if it is the desire of your heart to be with a man that possess those listed qualities, God will provide. Wait. And if ‘momma’s boy’ is the one for you…. TRUST….you will know. MOCA J LESSON LEARNED: LOVE=RISK. You have to be willing to take the risk. Only two things can happen. You will fall in love with your soulmate or you willgrow from experience and are better
Editorial prepared for your soulmate. Either way it's a win-win. Moca, I met this guy who is really nice and we hit it off. We only really talk on the phone and text most of the time. He says he wants to get to know me and invited me to his house. Why do men think that it is acceptable to have your first date at their house or several dates at their house?
Not coming to your house Los Angeles, CA
Honey, the answer is real simple, because so many women allow them to do it. Men are creatures of habit. If it has worked before he will keep doing it, even if it doesn’t work one time. He misses the lesson. Count it as a fluke, and on to the next one with the same cycle becoming repetitive. I know, sad but true. As long as women fall into the trap men will keep setting it. Don’t do it!!!!! I know when you hear that line, “I just want to get to know you” that you think he’s REALLY interested in you. Don’t do it!!!!! Or when he says, “I want to cook for you.” Don’t do it!!!! (at least not on the first date..lol) You are setting yourself up for failure and disappointment. I know some of you young whipper snappers don’t understand so let Moca break it down for you. The Breakdown When you go over to his house the first time you meet, he’s a man and he’s going to try you. Some will try harder than others, but TRUST he’s going to start the caressing and all the sexual innuendos. Now, you may have strong will power and be able to resist all of his initial advances. But you have now created a level of comfort and satisfaction on the guy’s part. He is thinking, while I didn’t have sex tonight she is cool with just coming over and hanging out, she’ll give in. So he doesn’t want to do anything else with you but hangout and chill. Every time you guys
make plans it’s to do the same thing. You go to his house or he comes to your house. You are never doing anything outside the house. He might even actually take another female out and when he gets home call you, old faithful, to come over. Because this is the relationship pattern you have fallen into. Don’t do it!!!!!! The first conversation you have can let you know the direction of the relationship. If he says anything sexual that’s exactly what he wants to do (first), have sex. He may still want to get to know you after but it’s not a priority at the moment. The first date sets the tone for the type of relationship you will have, whether it’s just friends, a committed relationship, or just sex. If your conversations prior to him asking you out have heavy sexual content…Don’t do it!!!!! Even if it doesn’t have sexual content…Don’t do it!!!! Create and environment that allows both of you to grow, whether it’s together or apart. Don’t restrict the relationship from the start. Most women have already made up in their minds the type of relationship they want. Allow the opportunity. You are bound to learn something from it. Don’t be afraid to LIVE OUT LOUD!!! Moca
Lesson Learned
Don’t settle. Know your SELFWORTH!!!
Sooo Moca, I made the decision to leave my ex-fiance’. I know an ‘ex’ is an ‘ex’ for a reason but why can’t I stop thinking of him sometimes? I won’t give in to the temptation to call or text but would it be wrong to see how he’s doing? I’ve moved on as far as knowing that I don’t want to be with him but I’m afraid that if I start communication I may be entering the danger zone!!! What should I do? Confused but Cautious Augusta, GA

break up it is not easy to stop being ‘IN’ love with your mate. No one can turn love on and off like a light switch. And no one expects you to, but what most people, especially females, fail to do, is take the time to just be. Instead you immediately make up in your mind that you are fine with it all, that you are over the whole relationship. You convince yourself, that wanting to make sure he is ok is you just being a caring friend. LIES!!! ALL LIES!!!
Editorial
LISTEN!!!! You are still ‘IN’ love with him!!!! The fact that you think communicating with him will put you in ‘the danger zone’ clearly reflects that you are still ‘IN’ love with him. Now I know some people may think there is no difference between being ‘IN’ love with someone and ‘LOVING’ someone but there is clearly a difference. Moca has been there and done that, honey, and what I learned is you need to take the time to just be. You see I was in a long term relationship. He cheated and I found out in a horrible way. So of course my heart was shattered. It was shattered by the fact that he lied to me, that he disrespected me, and that he cheated. When I found out I immediately ended the relationship. But just because I told him It was over didn’t mean I stopped being ‘IN’ love with him. He continued to call, I wouldn’t answer the phone but every time my phone would ring and it was him I felt sick to my stomach. I just tried to move on with my life. I never showed signs to anyone that I was emotionally drained from that relationship. Months past and he called, I thought I was over him or not ‘IN’ love with him but as soon as I heard his voice all of those feelings came rushing back. I didn’t want to admit it but I have given him control. Almost a year later, after I dealt with me, after I gain complete control of my life back, after I realized the lessons and made a conscious decision to grow from them I was able to call him and tell him THANK YOU!!! And now I do ‘LOVE’ him and we are friends, able to have a cordial conversation about what’s going on in our lives and so forth. When you are ‘IN’ love with someone you actively want to show them how much you love them. Whether it’s by the things you do or don’t do. Also with the things you say and how you say them. You are basically caring ‘for’ that person. All these actions usually occur while in the relationship. When you
Fresh out a relationship usually leaves both parties vulnerable. This means that you are easily influenced emotionally. So, what happens is you go out a few nights with your girls, you get a few numbers from random people, you might even go on a few dates and you decide that you are over your ex. So you want to call and ‘check on him’ see how he’s doing and as soon as you do immediately all those feelings of caring ‘for’ him return. Now you are slowly falling back into the same situation you recently left. An unhealthy repetitive cycle begins.
Take time to just be….figure out what happened. Why did that relationship not work? What part did you play in the demise of it? What did you realize you can not tolerate? What did you determine you can live with? Learn the lessons and grow. Separate yourself completely from him/her. No phone calls, no texts, and don’t go to the same places you know he will be, complete separation. Do this for as long as you need to. Once you are in a better place feel free to call to see how he’s doing. At this point, you should just ‘LOVE’ him because he assisted in your growth. He allowed you to open your eyes and see the real you. You now care “about” that person.
The old saying is true, ‘Only time heals a broken heart.’ You just need to allow the time. Now, if you truly don’t want to be with this guy then you need to completely pull away and allow distance to clear ‘the danger zone.’ Unfortunately, there is no grey area between ‘caring for’ and ‘caring about’ someone. So decide if you are ‘IN’ love with him or do you ‘LOVE’ him. Be honest with yourself and don’t hesitate to LIVE OUT LOUD!!!
that hurts your feelings or that you disagree with…STOP and speak on it then. REVIEW the situation, what was said or done, how it was said or done, what were the motives behind it, what part did YOU play. Make a prayerful and wise decision to either RENEW that ‘friendship’ or REMOVE that ‘friendship.’

Lesson Learned
Moca
Take time to just be....Live Out Loud!!!
Now, I do understand this can be very difficult when you are dealing with someone that has been apart of your life for so long. You don’t have to cut your ‘friend’ off completely, but you do need to deal with them on a totally different level. Some people that I once considered ‘friends’ are still in my life as ‘associates,’ we still talk and hangout at times. The difference is ME. I know longer expect them to be a ‘friend’ to me. I respect them for who they are and I deal with them on that level. After time one of two things happens, you are content with the type of relationship you have or they ‘white-out’ themselves because you have ‘changed’. Either is fine, because YES you have changed, you have matured and grown from the lessons you have learned in life. Side note: I think the statement, ‘you have changed,’ is an oxymoron. People grow everyday, change is inevitable, and it is suppose to happen. Why would I want to be the same person I was in 10th grade at the age of 31…..ok, I’m back. All I’m saying is STOP! REVIEW! RENEW! or REMOVE!
Recognize people for their purpose. Pray for discernment, so that you can see if they are suppose to be in you life for a season, a reason, and/or a lifetime. And remember life can be so much easier if you LIVE OUT LOUD!
Are We Friends? Check YES NO Moca, How many times must someone show you their true colors before you decide to throw bleach on them? (Not literally of course) Friend or Foe Flint, MI
I’m sure you have read the poem or heard people say, ‘people come into your life for a season, reason or a lifetime.’ I don’t claim enemies. I don’t give them a title no a place in my life. On this journey of life I have met so many people and at the time they fit so perfectly in my life. Everybody serves a purpose, figuring out that purpose and moving forward is where we sometimes get caught up. We have to learn to appreciate people that we encounter for exactly who they are. It is often said you can’t change people when you are in a relationship but the truth of the matter is you can’t change people, period. Being an influence or encouraging to someone is one thing but them acting different as a result is totally up to them. If you allow time most people will ‘white-out’ themselves from your life. Deal with YOU!!! Don’t allow others to dictate your life. Don’t allow things to fester and build up when the relationship goes awry. STOP! REVIEW! RENEW! or REMOVE! When your ‘friend’ does something
Lesson Learned Everybody serves a purpose. STOP! REVIEW! RENEW!or REMOVE!

Does Money & Fame Really Let You Get Away With Anything??? By. Ashley Jackson In this new era of entertainers and celebrities it seems that
everyone is hungry for “it”. And by it I mean the fame, and the satisfaction of making it to Hollywood just to be on the “big” screen or recording albums with no real talent or just simply partying everyday for the ultimate goal of a reality show.
Whatever “it” is that drives these stars into this whirlwind of a chaotic life they seem to be enjoying it. Unfortunately, for these people reaching the fame and stardom they desire so much comes with a territory, which is to be seen but not heard.
It is hard to stay above the influence in this life of fame because every celebrity that we know has been or is under some kind of influence whether it is drugs or alcohol. They seem to not have to take responsibility for their own actions because they have other people they can pay to do it.
to no consequences. Many times they feel as though their support system which mostly commence of a largely spread fan base will understand their wrong doing if they give a pitiful apology and claim what they will do to change it. The problem is their actions become forgettable and understandable and they really do seem to be getting away with their actions.
We have all heard the saying, “Money, power and respect is all you need in life,” but we have also witnessed that the money makes people feel so powerful to where they make bad decisions and have little respect for other people.
As average American citizens we have recently witnessed these power struck celebrities making the same mistake more than once, which means these celebrities didn’t see anything wrong with their negative actions the first time. Although there is a roster full of celebrities that will fit in this category, it’s better to focus more on the solution of these actions rather than the people.
Having fame these days is not hard to come by especially when you have self proclaimed socialites who are literally famous for nothing but being at the hottest parties and socializing themselves with celebrities. This fame that we witness is something that a lot of people are so hungry for they will leak naked pictures which often lead to a high paying reality show, or just get with a celebrity or athlete just to get the spotlight on themselves.
The consequences that these celebrities have to face are never what their consequences will truly be if they did not have their fame or money status. The question that stands is regardless as to how much money a person has when does it become okay to break the law and not suffer for it? To a lot of these celebrities the competition of fame is something so sought after that they don’t even realize when they have taken things too far and enough is enough.
There are the A-list and B-list celebrities who are considered the people who make millions or billions of dollars. This is the stage of the fame where the real lays. The celebrities reach a point to where they feel inevitable to any wrong doing because they have all this money that makes them feel powerful and a certain fan base that is so supportive they could care less about their actions as long as they are still getting paid.
Having fame and money does let you get away with anything and by anything that means not only breaking the law but having a singing career but not being able to sing and having an acting career and not knowing how to act. They get away with these careers because they are self proclaimed celebrities with enough money to pay people to work for them and encourage them to continue to do what they are doing.
It is sad the way our world works; it’s like we accept the unacceptable all because we thrive off of theses celebrities’ entertaining escapades. It is time that we get it together and agree upon one conclusion that fame
Celebrities know what is right from wrong yet they continue to do wrong and as an end result suffer little

Get to Know Dee-1
Interview by. Curl J Louis Today I> am fortunate enough to be able to sit down and introduce an inspiring positive upcoming artist Dee-1 that comes from the city of New Orleans, LA known as the «Big Easy.» Urban Centric: Before we get well into the interview Dee-1 let the people know who haven’t heard of you, or your music give them some insight to who you are and what your music is about. Dee-1: I’m Dee-1 “The One Man Army.” I’m a ma on a mission to entertain and inspire people through my music. UC: Being from New Orleans were there any rappers that you looked up to that inspired you to pick up a mic? Dee-1: Nas, Tupac, Mac, The whole original Cash Money movement, Lauryn Hill. UC: Growing up in New Orleans listening to local artists from P-n-C to Mystikal did you ever find yourself calling Q93 trying to get on the radio to do the 9 o’clock props? Dee-1: I called once and they answered but I knew I couldn’t rap so I hung up and busted out laughing. UC: (Laughs) UC: When did you decide or figure out that music was something that you wanted to do? Dee-1: My sophomore year of college at LSU
20
(Louisiana State University). UC: Being an unsigned and local artist do you feel that its harder to make a name for yourself as it is for artists that are signed to major labels? Dee-1: Yes! The hardest part is to convince people that you are different from the rest of the artists out there, and to gt them to just listen. UC: Your music has a positive message in it unlike some rappers out there that rap about guns, drugs, females, and bling. Do you feel that being a positive rapper will keep you from being mentioned alongside rappers with the likes of Wayne, Jay Z, Jeezy, etc? Dee-1: No! Because I’m dope and people respect that. UC: The concept of your song “Wayne, Jay Z, 50cent” where did you get it from, and what made you decide it was a song you needed to drop? Dee-1: I wrote it when I was teaching middle school and I felt like those three brothers could be doing more with their fame, popularity, and money to be helping our community because we are suffering and kids look up to rappers more than anyone nowadays. UC: Some people who may hear it might think you are dissing the rappers you mention try-
Entertainment ing to make a name for yourself. So could you state the true meaning and message behind the song. Dee-1: Its not a Diss song, its just a REAL song. UC: At the end of the song you say “Ancestors of ours are screaming from the graves cause physically we’re free, but we’re still some mental slaves.” Can you speak on that and the message you are speaking on. Dee-1: I’m saying that physically our ancestors had to suffer and be slaves now because of their sacrifices we are physically free, but mentally we are still enslaved because we are focused on the wrong things and our priorities as a people are screwed up. UC: David & Goliath was your first official album when you were in the studio and it was finally complete how did you feel? Dee-1: I felt like a champion. I just finished and dropped my latest cd “I Hope They Hear Me Vol 2” on March 1st, and I feel like this is the best cd I have ever put out by far. People can download it for free at dee1music.com UC: When you are performing on stage, and you look into the crowd and hear them singing along with you how does that make you feel? Dee-1: Like a Champion. UC: Listening to your music you can tell that you’re not just a rapper your flow is that of a poet or spoken word artist. How do you percieve your musical style to be? Dee-1: A combination of soul mixed with swag.
young black professional first and foremost, but they also thought it was cool that their teacher was a real rapper. I’m doing my music full time and no longer teaching, but when I was teaching I use to rap to the students sometimes as part of the lesson plan in a cool way never anything corny (laughs). UC: (Laughs) the rapping teacher UC: In the music industry people feel that if you are not rapping about what you got, how big your crib is, or how many cars you have, and popping bottles in the club they feel you not keeping it real. What do you think about that? Dee-1: I think people have the wrong definition of what is real, because for 95% of people out here in the streets that’s no real. UC: What challenges do you feel that you may face in the music industry? Dee-1: Just getting enough people to listen to my music, but once they listen I feel like I’m going to blow. UC: Looking at an artist like Drake who was once himself was an unsigned artist who created a major buzz for himself and got signed to a major label. How do you think you can do that for yourself as he did? Dee-1: If I keep putting out tight music, videos on Youtube, doing shows, and keeping God first. UC: Speaking of Drake you performed a show
UC: If people pay attention to your music they will hear that you don’t curse is there any reason behind that? Dee-1: Its just something I stopped doing in my real life, so it became easy to not do it in my music. UC: Music is your pride and passion but what some people may not know that you are/were a teacher. How do the students you teach look at you, and do you sometime rap your lesson plans? Dee-1: Well my students looked at me as a

with him at Tulane where you held it down like a paper weight. How did it feel to work with a major artist, and what did you take from that show? Dee-1: My favorite part of rapping is performing so it felt good to share the same stage as Drake and Lil Wayne. I actually met Drake backstage too, and after that show I knew I could rock big crowds because that show was PACKED and I did my thing.
tric Magazine I say Thank You. Dee-1: My pleasure God Bless....And the battle continues.
UC: What are some things that people can be on the look out from Dee-1, and where can they go to find your music and hear what Dee-1 speaks on? Dee-1: Download my new mixtape for free at dee1music.com. once again its called “I Hope They Hear Me Vol 2.” Also follow me on twitter at dee1music. UC: Are there any artist out there that if you had the chance to work with unsigned or signed who do you wish to collaborate with? Dee-1: Nas, Lauryn Hill, and anybody making real music UC: You have one album out, and several mixtapes out. Which one do you feel to you is more harder to work on? Dee-1: Harder to work on an album by far, and I approached “I Hope They Hear Me Vol 2” just like an album. UC: At the end of the day after you are done writing, and out of the studio how do you feel about your music? Dee-1: I’m my biggest critic gotta keep pushing myself to get better, but it feels good to listen to what I just did and be like “Ohhhhh I did that.” UC: Before I let you go is there anything that you want to tell the people and your fans? Dee-1: I love y’all keep helping to spread the music to new ears and putting new people on it, and make sure you download “I Hope They Hear Me Vol 2” from dee1music.com for free. UC: I want to say thank you Dee-1 for taking the time out of your schedule and sitting down with me and on behalf of Urban Cen-

How to Survive Graduate School
ADVICE

Congratulations! You survived undergrad.
Receiving that diploma that represents four years of your hard work and late nights is possibly your biggest accomplishment thus far.
4. Challenge Yourself To Think Beyond The Surface (That’s What Your Professors Want You To Do)
However, it’s not over yet. For those of you who have decided to go that extra mile and enroll in graduate school, you may find yourself wanting to run home to your mother after the first month. You may have realized by now that undergrad was a breeze.
5. Ask Your Professors Questions
In addition to you actually living in the “real world” and paying “adult bills” (For those who are not fortunate to have their parents support them until they’re 30!), the reading assignments are doubled, the writing assignments are tripled, and the in class discussions are much more in depth and challenging. You shouldn’t be discouraged though.
8. Organize And Plan Ahead
There is a way to successfully balance school, work, finance, and social life without completely going insane. Graduate Check List
6. Get A Planner/Organizer 7. Network, Network, Network
9. Form Study Groups 10. Budget Your Money 11. Take Advantage Of Every Opportunity 12. Take Initiative (No One Will Give You A Handout) 13. Try To Have Fun
1. Buy Your Books, You Will Need Them! 14. Do Something Nice For Yourself Every Once 2. Study! Read! Study! 3. Do Not Procrastinate

Study Tips for Finals By: Tamara Jackson 1. Plan
It’s 2am, your bed is covered in pizza, soda, and other “brain food”, and there are books scattered all over your dorm room floor. It’s the night before your exam and you are trying to cram a semester worth of information into one night. Trust me, you will be better off if you plan ahead. Cramming will just cause confusion. Set aside time, at least two weeks prior to your exam, to begin studying. Time management is key.
2. Organize
Organize all your notes by subject and content. Many people like to use note cards. Putting your notes into separate files on your computer also helps. You can use whatever is best for you.
5. Take a break
3. Consult your professor
If you are confused about anything, consult with your professor. Remember, your professors are there to help you. Just don’t wait until the last moment.
6. Get a good nights rest
4. Form a study group
Although they are not for everyone, study groups can be great study tools. Bouncing information off your peers helps you to retain it. It’s also great fun!
Don’t become a robot. Take frequent breaks in order to recharge. You will go insane if you don’t.
Sleep, Sleep, Sleep. Get a lot of rest so that you will wake up refreshed and alert. Be sure that you are in a good mental state. A good nights rest is essential.
7. Relax
Take a deep breath and relax. Remember, you have thoroughly prepared. You are ready. Be confident.

Live A Lie
Interview done by. Naomi MzNay Bonman s kids are younger they are told that they can be anything that they want to be when they grow up, which is true and still stands true till this day. We have seen several young entrepreneurs in the game; however, each individual or group of individuals proves to be different from the rest. Take Brenden, Brad and Patrick from Riverside, CA for example. They started a unique clothing brand called, “Live A Lie,” which definitely proves to stand out from the rest of the clothing brands.
Brad, Brenden, and Patrick wanted a product that would appeal to everyone. Limiting their selves is definitely not an option. Not only is their clothing brand something that everyone will enjoy, it is also affordable. Their T-shirts range from $15-20, now come on how can you not beat that price!
Starting your own T-shirt brand isn’t difficult as long as you know what tools to apply when doing so. “Research a lot and know what you are doing. Ignore the negativity and don’t let people tell you no,” the trio said.
Live a Lie clothing as been around since November 2010, although the clothing brand as only been around for a few months, Live a Lie is already sold in stores. There are a total of 6 different styles that are currently available as well.
Brenden, Brad and Patrick talked about launching a clothing line for months and then when they finally launched it, they stated that everything happened quickly.
“You have to be willing to put in the hard work. It’s not all about having fun.” The guys also stated that you need to be smart with your money and learn how to budget your finances.
This summer look out for more apparel and look for Live A Lie merchandise at music festivals all throughout California.
A
Now I know you guys are probably wondering where the name Live A Lie came from. “Sacarism. A lot of people want to live lives that are different from their own. It’s kind of like a joke. We wanted to represent ourselves,” Brad states. As you can tell, these guys are very much involved in not just selling their products and making sure that the public loves it, but they also rock their products their selves.

You’re Too Old to Wear That! By. Shannon Morris

tyle is a matter of expressing individuality- the freedom to piece together an outfit that reflects your personality. The style of the clothing or the brand of the clothing is all a matter of personal preference. However, is there a “cut off time” in which wearing certain brands of clothing may seem outdated, or not age appropriate? Or should some fashion trends not be duplicated under any circumstances? Ms. Ashley Favors, a mass media arts major, agrees with the latter. “I don’t believe age has anything to do with the style of clothes you wear. For instance, one shouldn’t say ‘well he’s 20, so he can wear his pants baggy,’ but a 40 year old can’t. That kind of style shouldn’t be expected of any age.” I have to offer my opinion on this. I think it is okay for people to wear what they choose, as long as they have a variety and a balance (there is that word again!) so they can mingle and adapt to different settings that require a certain dress code. Once you enter college, it is time to
start investing in business casual clothing and conservative wear even if it isn’t your style. Whenever that opportunity for a job interview and other professional opportunities pop up, you need to look polished in order to be taken seriously. Please leave your freak’em dresses, baggy pants, and clothing with huge designer labels plastered all over locked up in your closet! “Honestly, at the age of 30 I think it’s beyond past due to wear ‘urban’ clothing. At that age one should be in a more refined and age appropriate attire,” says Clark Atlanta University senior Alicia Baker. To a certain extent, your clothing defines who you are. Before you open your mouth, people are taking mental notes on your outfit and overall appearance. Therefore, they make assumptions on the type of person they think you are. People should be aware that even though it isn’t right to judge someone solely on their appearance, it happens all the time! Especially in the job industry, where a more conservative touch would leave a better impression than clothing that leaves little to the imagination. Seriously, there is a time and place for everything!

Breaking the Cycle: Teenage Drinking
T
here was a recent discussion in my class pertaining to the age limit on purchasing alcohol, and whether or not it should stay at 21, or be lowered to 18. Apparently, this turned into a very heated debate that brought up some very good points. The class eventually reached a consensus that the drinking age should not be lowered. From my point of view, I will explain why.
Let’s look at the anatomy of the average teenager. During the fragile cycle of adolescence, the body and mind are not fully developed. When alcohol is consumed in excessive amounts, it leads to tissue damage and even death. In other words, teenagers having access to alcohol can develop an habit that will lead to costly addictions and major emotional and bodily damage in the long run.
Alcohol is “confidence in a bottle”, because it limits inhibitions, and makes the person more talkative and outgoing. That is why alcohol is widely used and popular in social settings such as clubs and parties. As a result, teenagers may have easier access to alcohol than usual. Alcohol tricks the body into a state of “relaxation”, later followed by confusion, defend oneself during an attack.
Females are more vulnerable in social settings when intoxicated, since alcohol travels through the bloodstream faster than in males. The correlation between sexual intercourse and alco-

hol usage SADD quotes that In 2009, 46% of high school students had sexual intercourse and 13.8% had four or more sex partners during their life. Prior to the sexual activity, 21.6% drank alcohol or used drugs. Only 38.9% used a condom. Obviously, teenagers are finding their way around the age limit. Some stores require that people show their ID to verify that they Photo credit: Google Images are of legal drinking age. Some teenagers obtain fake Ids, or get
older peers to buy alcohol for them. The ease of availability, and the lack of concern from sales clerks, makes it very simple to obtain. There are several preventative measures that families and communities in general can take to reduce the number of teenager drinking. Doing research and knowing the early stages of possible alcohol abuse will greatly reduce the number of teenage drinkers. Alcohol abuse not only affects the victims, but the people who live and work with them. As a rule, teenagers are not able to mentally and physically handle the consequences that will inevitably come along with the misuse of alcohol. Sources used: SADD.org.

Online Dating: Why It Has Become So Popular By. Tamara Jackson

areas of their life including their love life.
We live in the age of technology. The time
of thinking of meeting someone online, dating them and maybe even marrying them as taboo, has passed. Today there are over 100 daring sites around the world and the market is growing. African American dating sites are beginning to make up a large portion of this market as well. Recent statistics show that 42 percent of African American women and 43 percent of African American men have never been married compared with only 21 percent of White women and 27 percent of White men. Those singles that are determined to find love and start a family, are turning to non-traditional methods. Here are the top five reasons why online dating has become so popular among African Americans.
1. The Media Influence “The media routinely focuses on Black women not being able to find “suitable” mates” (Hazel). Black women have a lot of pressure on them to find a husband and have children. However, the success of women academically and in the work place continues to be scrutinized. Women feel that they need to be superwomen dominating all
2. Traditional dating has become inconvenient
With the increase of Black business men and women, love has been put on hold. Tight time schedules, deadlines, conference calls, and business meetings are priority. For most, there is no time for a social life outside of the office.
3. Traditional dating has become disappointing
We have all heard the sayings, “a good man is hard to find,” and “all the good Black men are taken.” Women are tired of going to the bar, nightclubs, and cultural events and still meeting the same losers. Some men try to go to church to find a “good woman” but even that fails at times.
4. Compatibility and chemistry is aided with tools
With just a click you can learn almost everything about a person. Instead of spending months trying to discover their ambitions, goals, and morals, you can simply read their profile. Whether or not it’s true or not is another story.
5. It’s easier!
Technology has spoiled us. We communicate through telephone, email, text message, a social

Loving Yourself First
By. Nakeisha ‘Moca’ McDaniel
require 100% of them. This creates 200% of knowledge, love, and growth. And we’ve all heard the saying, ‘two is better than one.’ Now, it holds a whole new meaning. Without ‘loving yourself first’ you can never completely give your mate all of you. So, how do I love myself? 1. Realizing: Becoming aware of who you are, is important. Taking the things you have experienced in life and developing a sense of self will give you part of your foundation. Whether positive or negative, it all helped to mold the individual you are today.
The title alone speaks volumes. Love is just a
four letter word that has always carried a lot of weight. The problem usually comes when we throw that weight onto someone or something that never deserved to carry it in the first place. Realizing who you are, what you like and don’t like, what you will and won’t tolerate are all steps toward ‘loving yourself first.’ People go through stages in life as part of growth. But for some reason the lesson of ‘loving yourself first’ gets lost in translation. This can easily create a cycle of failing relationships.
2. Acceptance: When going through situations in life it can be hard to accept that it happened to you. Sometimes we try to shield our past from our future. This hinders growth and in turn prevents you from ever truly ‘loving yourself first’ It’s important to acknowledge and then go through the process of accepting in order to maintain control of who you are in the world.
Life and Love is just like education. One experience builds on another one and through experiences you develop as a person. Just as in education, as you learn the necessary information in one grade you continue to be promoted to the next grade building on the foundation that was started in kindergarten. Now, if you don’t learn the lessons being taught then you don’t progress. Such is life, if you miss the lesson you don’t grow.
Setting a foundation is important, and ‘loving yourself first’ is a firm ground to build from, in life and love. A lot of relationships fail because the individuals involved don’t have a solid foundation. Before you can make two people work together you must first be complete separately.
The statement that a relationship should be 50/50 is so ridiculous. Who prefers half of something as oppose to the whole. In any relationship you should give 100% of you and
3. Confidence: Exuding confidence will only come after you have accomplished 1 and 2. Being confident in who you are, is the last piece of the foundation needed to grow. When you are confident, ‘loving yourself first,’ is second nature. The ability to express yourself without saying anything says a lot about the security you have in knowing that you ‘love yourself.’
These three steps will not be accomplished overnight and the process will be different for each individual. But the outcome of ‘loving yourself first’ will result in a better life and better relationships. So, stop right now trying to use multiple relationships to cover issues you need to deal with in life. Let’s work on you and then watch life and love start building from such a strong foundation of “Loving Yourself First.” Moca

The Importance of the Black Family By. Shannon Morris

W
e all know that the black family structure is almost nonexistent in today’s society. None of us will truly realize how much effort our ancestors put into maintaining and providing for their families while having the world against them.
getting a girl pregnant, knowing you do not want a relationship with her?
Marriage should not be something to confine to or rebel against. Only you know what is best for you, and not everyone wants to get married and start a family.
However, keep the gate open to the possibility of being committed to someone that may change your life. If someone grew up in a broken home, that person should not want their child to end up in the same situation.
However, I feel that the whole concept of a stable family is no longer taken seriously. There are way too many single black women (and women in general) who have kids out of wedlock, only to end up miserable and struggling to keep their heads above water. What’s really sad is that some women who have children do so strictly for financial gain and manipulation!
Black families would literally stick together through any obstacle, and kept their faith in one another. When one person fell, it affected everyone.
What’s really disheartening is that a lot of young black men and women no longer feel the need to keep that same mentality. Living with their significant others and having kids out of wedlock means they already have a solid relationship, only without signing official papers.
Now a days, it’s more acceptable to be a baby mama/daddy, or just a hubby/wifey instead of husband and wife.
Did you know that you are setting yourself and your child up for a lifetime of potential anguish when you allow yourself to settle. What happens to you and/or your child when your partner meets an ill fate? You end up with no security, and emotional distress.
Not having that solid father figure affects the lives of our babies. Not having that support system of unconditional love takes a toll on a child’s mental and emotional being. Eventually, they think that it’s normal or acceptablethus continuing that vicious cycle.
How can we stop this from happening?
We need to be aware of how we are contributing to that never ending cycle that constantly puts us in a negative light. Not taking a stand
Ladies, why would you want to have a baby in your stomach, yet no promise of love and support on his end? Fellas, why would you risk

Woman Sues Dating Site because of Rape Case: Taking Responsiblity for our Actions By. Danger Man
A
California entertainment executive is suing Match.com, which is the the world’s largest online dating service, over a sexual assault.
An unidentified California woman who met a man on Match.com, and while on the second date was sexually assaulted is suing the online dating company because of their screening process.
It was later revealed that this man was a sex offender who had been previously convicted of sexual assault. In the lawsuit the woman wants Match.com to put into play a screening policy to check for sex offenders, plus a restraining order against any new men joining until this is in place.
In the US every two minutes a person is sexually assaulted, 60% of assaults are not reported to the police., approximately 2/3 of all assaults are committed by someone known by the victim and 38% of rapist are a friend or acquaintance.
So at some point we have to take personal responsibility for our actions. Always tell a family member or friend where you’re going and with whom. Take a chaperon on the first two or three dates. Don’t be so quick to take a man to your home or go to his. Also try not to use alcohol in the first few dates until you really get to know the person, and listen to what they say. In 2010 there were 273.225 sexual assault victims. If this woman had met her date on the train, would she sue the train company? Don’t be in a hurry to find love; it’s not an overnight thing. Ask more questions, and again please keep alcohol out of it, and be safe.
If you have you feel like you are being sexually assaulted, please dial the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1.800.656.HOPE.

t just 6 years old, Ms. Hydeia Broadbent was recognized as an HIV/AIDS Activist. Hydeia has been all across the globe ensuring that the community is aware of HIV/AIDS. People often think that they know everything that they need to know about the virus, yet people are still contracting the virus each and every day. According to Centers for Disease Control (CDC), there are over one million people in the United States living with HIV/AIDS; however, only a mere 21% are aware that they even have it.
Urban Centric recently had the chance to interview, International HIV/AIDS Activist and Humanitarian, Hydeia Broadbent. For those of you who may not know her, or just need your memory refreshed here is a quick bio of Hydeia. At birth, Hydeia Broadbent was abandoned at the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas. It was there where Patricia and Loren Broadbent adopted her. Her HIV condition was congenital (mother to child transmission) and she was not diagnosed of being HIV positive until the age of three. The prognosis was that she would not live past the age of five.
However, God had other plans in store for Hydeia and she is now 26 years old. Since the age of six, Hydeia has been actively been spreading the message of HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention by promoting abstinence, safe sex practices (for people who choose to have sex), and the initiative “Knowing Your HIV/AIDS Status.”
You have probably seen Hydeia on several TV series, such as: Oprah, 20/20, Good Morning America, Weekly with Ed Gordon, and “A Conversation with Magic Johnson” on Nickelodeon. She has also been featured in several other publications, which include: New York Times, Teen People, Essence, Heart & Soul, Seventeen, and several others.
Now that you memory is refreshed, you’re probably wondering what she is up to now. It was a pleasure interviewing Hydeia. Just by talking to her, you can see the maturity that she has picked up over the years and she has the sweetest sprit.

There are so many people who think that contracting HIV/AIDS can never happen to them. They think that it is just a gay disease. “It happens to everyone. H stands for Human, and if you are a human, then it can happen to you,” Hydeia states.
Youth and young adults between the ages of 15-24 are the ones who prove to be the most naïve when it comes to HIV/AIDS. This is the age group that needs to take measures into their own hands and become fully educated about the disease. According to the CDC over 4,883 young people received a diagnosis of HIV infection, representation 13% of people given a diagnosis during one year.
Hydeia is now 26 years old, soon to be 27 and she is still serving as an active International HIV/AIDS Activist and Humanitarian. Of course, now that she is older, she understands a lot more than when she was just six years old. She knows about being responsible for her own health care. At the age of six, she couldn’t relate to peer pressure, but now she understands the challenges and choices that people go through, so she can relate when spreading the message on HIV/AIDS awareness.
If you’re the average person, one of the things that comes across your mind when it comes to living with HIV/AIDS is that your life is forever changed. That is true to a certain extent. The only thing that is changed about her life is that you now have to take medicine to be able to effectively live with HIV/AIDS and you also have to take extra measure with protecting your health, but we should all be doing that on daily basis.
Hydeia still lives a normal life. A daily routine for her right now is that she is fighting the state of Nevada for health insurance. So her day may consist of applying for a medical card, dropping off paperwork, etc. It changes from day to day. That’s just about the same for the rest of us not living with HIV/AIDS, how many of us really have a life where our day is the same every day? We all live a life where each day we may be in for a new surprise or adventure.
So just because you are young don’t think you are immune to the disease. “HIV doesn’t discriminate. It doesn’t care if you’re rich or poor, black or white. It is important to get tested with your partner. People think that all they have to do is take a pill and they’ll be cured. People are still dying, there is no cure. The medicine is expensive, so if you don’t have health insurance are you going to pay for the medicine.” Hydeia states on what Youth need to know about HIV/AIDS. Youth feel as if they already have a hard knock life, so we can only imagine what youth who have the HIV/AIDS virus feel like. The majority

of them probably feel like they can no longer do what they want to do and that their normal teenage life is over. However, their lives are not over, and they can still continue to live the normal teenage life. There are spokespeople like Hydeia who can encourage Youth to not give up.
“It isn’t easy, it gets difficult, but when has life ever been easy. The disease doesn’t define you, it is just something that happened to you,” Hydeia said.
As an International HIV/AIDS Activist, Hydeia has gotten to travel to many exciting places, including: Spain, Nigerd, Africa and Jamaica. Africa is one of the places that Hydeia wants to visit again now that she is older.
Just recently, BET hosted their first annual Black Girls Rock and Hydeia had the privilege of attending. “It was a great experience. I loved the fact that I was able to be a part of something positive for young women. It was moving…” Hydeia speaks on her experience of attending Black Girls Rock.
We all have certain quotes that we live by; one of Hydeia’s favorite quotes is by Marian Wright Edelman, “Service is the rent we pay for the privilege of living on this earth.”
“People often live by me, me, me…try doing something for someone else every once in awhile, like spending time with the elderly or bringing someone a plate of food, it will not only brighten up their day, but also make you feel like a better person,” Hydeia states.

How to Relieve Your Body from the Day to Day Stress By. Shannon Morris
O
ur daily lives are so hectic, that we forget that we need to take some time off for ourselves. Most of us do not realize that this is crucial to staying healthy. Stress is a disease. Stress eats away at our mental, emotional, and physical health. Unfortunately, stress is unavoidable, as it affects billions of people daily. The key is to find ways to manage stress in order to function at your optimal level. One remedy for stress is something so simple, yet misunderstood- silence. The saying “silence is golden” is a phrase that holds true for many different reasons. But why is it so misunderstood? A lot of people get really nervous or uncomfortable when they are in complete silence. My theory is that situations become more apparent when you have to be quiet- but it is not a bad thing.
With so much going on in our lives, silence is a healing process for the mind and soul. Being in silence forces you to think and reflect about yourself and your direction in life. That is how I learned a lot about what I wanted out of life-simply by being quiet and getting lost in my own world. Silence should not be seen as unfamiliar territory, quite the contrary.
Some people are so afraid of silence that it is quite sad to see. This is especially true in people who are super extroverted, and need to be around people in order to function. Introverted people on the other hand, need no company of people and constant noise, as they are happy and comfortable by themselves.
Taking a nap is a great way to relax your body
However, do not underestimate the power of prayer. To some people, it is useful to write down your prayers on paper, and then recite them out loud. Others may just say what is on their mind directly.
Either way, prayer is a conversation with a higher spirit that opens your spiritual pathways to guide you in the right direction.
Even if you are not a religious person, you may find that just speaking your mind, addressing your needs, or asking for a solution to your problems offers a huge relief! Talking to someone- or even yourself- has great advantages in healing the mind and body.
Whatever you choose to do, always remember to take some time out for yourself, always!

Men: Do you know your Status By. Curl J. Louis
If we can go wait in some long line trying to get in a club to get in free before midnight why is it that we cannot go get and wait in a line that can tell us about our health and life. The information is out there especially on the internet just as simple as it is for us to log on to our Facebook and Twitter accounts to post some status about nothing that is of importance to anybody other than us. Let us as men take the vow to turn that two out of every ten men into ten out of every ten men getting tested, and being aware of our health; now how about we Facebook and Tweet about that for a change.
For more information please visit:

en why is it that we do not take the time and go to the doctors to get tested? History has shown that not one of us is immune to any of the STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) that are out there today. It is important to get tested, even if you are not having sex because there are other ways to contract STDs as by a simple cut that gets infected, drinking or eating behind somebody, or even by a blood transfusion.
Why is it that fewer than two out of ten men have ever figured they were even at risk for acquiring an STD. Half of sexually active men will contract an STD by the time they’re in their mid-20’s.
Most men think that if they don’t feel or see something down there that they don’t have anything. That is the misguided conception, as well as uneducated thinking of some men failing to realize that it takes longer to detect a STD in men than it does in women.
How many other men out there are just like this man not getting tested or even knowing the process of a STD screening? The thing about these screenings is that they are free so what are the reasons, if any that when they are in a city nearby that we do not go.
M
We need to realize the importance as not just men, but as teachers to teach our sons, brothers, as well as our nephews; the importance and reasons of getting tested as well. I had a conversation with a friend on facebook and she was recalling a conversation she had with a 25 year old male she kicked off her video shoot to go get tested and know his STD status. She stated that he didn’t know the process of getting an STD screening and he said “I’ve been having sex since 17 and I’ve never been burnt before.” She had to tell him “just because it’s not on fire doesn’t mean it’s not burning.” What he didn’t realize before, which I’m sure his doctor informed him of, was that in men we can have an undetected STD from 10 days to six weeks before we feel even one symptom of an STD. Also, while this 25 year old man did not know if he was walking around with or without an std, but him not knowing his status

Staying Fit: How to have the body that you want for the summer! By. Shannon Morris

hose who are close to me can testify how picky I am about what I put in my body, and how I dedicate so much of my time to my health and physical appearance. No, I’m not conceited, (Just a little vain-ha ha!) But I have a good reason you only have one body. It is your job to take a stand for your health because in the end, no one is going to do it for you.

I noticed that when I cut a lot of sugar, meats, and dairy products from my diet- not only did my skin clear up, but my stomach was flatter, my mind was clearer, and I lost weight! I felt happier and more content with my body image. I started including lots of leafy green veggies, fruits, distilled water, homemade soups, and oatmeal in my diet helped to enhance my appearance and overall health.
Let me tell you this now- I am NOT a fitness expert. As a journalism major, most of my articles deal with human interests and health matters. I like to touch up on topics like beauty, make-up, fitness, managing stress, healthy alternatives, nutrition, the latest news in health care and medicine, skin care, biology and human anatomy, body issues, detox methods- you get the idea! However, I have enough experience with exercise routines, nutrition, and diet pills to give you some helpful tips.
Word of advice about diet pills: Do not buy diet pills thinking this is going to be a quick fix, because it could not be further from the truth! Some brands DO work, but guess what? I realized that most (if not all) diet pills include a list of guidelines and precautions, usually emphasizing that you have to EXERCISE AND EAT HEALTHY when taking the pills to get the optimal results fast. Isn’t that funny?
I have to say this: WHAT YOU PUT INSIDE OF YOUR BODY IS WHAT WILL SHOW ON THE OUTSIDE. Truth of the matter is that you can’t exercise; yet still eat junk food, and visa versa. You have to eat healthy (which includes drinking lots of water) and exercise in order to see fast results, period. Really, there are no ifs, ands, or buts.
Ladies, there is a trend on the Internet about taking certain herbs and supplements that claim to help you get a bigger butt and a smaller waist. Please do not buy into thinking this is true. Yes, in some cases you take a pill and gain weight in the desired regions, but the only way to increase muscle mass in your derriere is to do strength training, preferably with weights. Doing squats, donkey kicks, and leg lunges worked wonders for me!
If you are trying to loose weight, the most important exercise to do is one that will make you sweat like nobody’s business. I’m talking about cardio!! Exercises that target he cardiovascular system (walking,
You can do all the crunches and sit-ups in the world and STILL have those annoying love handles and the embarrassing muffin top. You exercised and busted your butt for so long, yet you still see NO improvement. Why is that?

How to Have Clear Healthy Skin and How to Keep It By. Shannon Morris

he skin is the largest organ in the human body. What affects your hair, nails, and any other organs will also affect your skin. Just like your kidneys, the skin serves as an organ of elimination.
When your body is toxic, your skin will start to show the symptoms such as dryness, acne, blemishes, eczema, and other skin disorders.
During the upcoming winter season, it is imperative that you baby your skin and take extra precautions with the products you use.
If you have dry, sensitive skin, use a heavier moisturizer like shea butter mixed with your favorite oils. Regular lotion may not be enough to protect your skin from the harsh winter season. If you wear make-up, wipe it off before you go to bed at night, and stay away from products that clog your pores.
However, the key to clear, healthy skin is to drink lots and lots of water. Water helps to flush out toxins in your body that cause you to break out. In addition, getting a good night sleep (at least 7-8 hours), taking a multivitamin, a healthy diet, and exercise is crucial to keep you skin flawless.
Winter is right around the corner, which for many of us means our skin will start looking like the desert: Dry, cracked, dehydrated. Start looking for a good moisturizer and don’t forget to exfoliate your skin! The trick is finding moisturizers that are truly nontoxic and using common sense!

Even in the midst of her neglect she still receives attention, affection and protection from the stereotypical housewife, free spirited sexuality, undermined ignorance. She is a feminist who screams for acceptance from the hype, profiles and styles. Her hands mold and feed the lands wisdom, inspires writers and most of all educate. Truth is she is beautiful even when battered, misused and treated cruel regardless of hardship, the burdens on her shoulders, her souls lifts and distinguishes her from man, her skin is thick and rich blooming from the suns ray off her reflection. She is unique specie, but despite her complicatedness, outspokenness and differences she will never go extinct. Definition of a Man By. Naomi MzNay Bonman So many guys will say that they are a ‘man,’ but yet the lack the terms of what a man is supposed to be. So what exactly makes a man a man? It goes deeper than just the outer appearance. A man is one who has goals and a solution on how to reach those goals. He wants to make the best for his family, and one day have a family of his own. He was taught by another ‘real’ man on how to be the BEST man. He’s a motivator, protector and most importantly a hard worker. He realizes that nothing is going to come easy, and that he has to work hard to get what he wants and work even harder to keep it. He is the protector in all of his relationships. He protects his family, his closest friends, and his woman. He’ll give you his shirt off his back when he sees that you are in need.

n
e
r
There are no worries when he is around. He motivates not only those around him, but he also motivates himself. If he feels discouraged, he takes it to the Man upstairs because he knows that he is a child of God. He is also, Educated and Business Savvy. He has a strong entreprenual spirit. He just wants to make a good living for not only himself, but for his family. So see just because a ‘man’ may have the looks he may not have the books, the faith, the courage, or the respect, to fully earn the title of being a “real” man.

It’s time for black people to take the necessary steps to strengthen that support system. We need to build the same integrity that our ancestors had for their blood. Keep in mind that our successors are the ones who will end up taking care of the elders, so instilling the importance of family is vital.
