ADRIANA GRAUER The Grauer Design Group 3452 West Flamingo Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89120 702-788-3255 grauerdesigngroup.com

“Make something beautiful. Everybody, every client, has a different idea of what beauty is, and we as designers are charged with the task of making that imagined beauty come to life, Each job is a unique and refreshing new challenge.”

THE PERFECT FIT

Word of mouth is how one couple from Venezuela found their imaginative designer, Adriana Grauer. She, also Venezuelan, was entrusted to use her architectural training to mint a “Modern Scan” interior for the family of six. “They wanted to have a house where they can grow as they welcome grandkids,” Grauer says. pon entry, this new 4,000-square-foot home intrigues with open-concept living spaces that overlook the Intracoastal Waterway in Hallandale Beach, Fla. With her architectural background, Grauer integrated structural concepts into the design by using the same materials inside as out. She treated elements like main characters, and furnishings and fixtures like fine art. The designer sees space in volumes. “You don’t see flat. You see light, you see contrast,” she says. “You walk through this house and feel the spaces are all connected.” n

U

Right: “The idea was to keep it simple, but each space with its

own detail … to have furniture that is flexible,” Grauer says.

college-aged kids come home to visit, wanted an open area that consolidated the kitchen

with a casual eating area and an adjacent

Left: They wanted cozy, but at the same time, modern and timeless,” Grauer says. “We were given carte blanche and that rarely happens.” With her architectural background, Grauer integrated structural concepts into the design by using the same materials inside as out.

Right: The buffet’s wood slats inspired other

furnishings, too, like the foyer’s rose-gold mir-

ror above a stainless steel and glass console.

In contrast, the designer purposely broke rigid lines with playful lighting fixtures.

JENNY PROVOST Provost Design Group Las Vegas, NV 702-498-1520 provostdesigngroup.com

“Designing is dreaming. To be invited in to design ones mostpersonal space is truly an honor. I feel proveleged to be able to create beautuful spaces where one can live and feel happy in their surroundings.”

I

NEW MODERN

nterior designer Jenny Provost’s introduction to her client — a businessman, who moved here from South Africa and became a major success — was a “short” conversation that lasted for a few hours. He had seen her work and visited her office where they met for the first time. “I felt like I was conversing with a colleague,” Provost says. “He may not have had the lingo and superlatives we use, but he could tell me what he wanted.” Provost soon realized that her client was not only a risk taker in business, but also in design. And that was something she relished. The result of their relationship is this 7,000-square-foot Cape Coral home the designer describes as “imaginative modern.” It started with the homeowner, a devoted family man with a young son, liking the cool sleek interiors he’d seen in

Miami. But as Provost got to know him, she felt they

needed something warmer in addition to lots of social spaces to entertain both clients and family.” n

Right: The hospitality begins with the exterior. Guests feel wel-

come even before reaching the pivoting glass front door, as the house itself seems to reach out and beckon family and friends to enter.

Left: At day’s end, the master suite with

a panoramic second-floor balcony ex-

udes relaxation inspired by the soft luxurious hush of the finest hotel rooms the

couple has enjoyed while traveling. Al-

though few homeowners still want wall-

to-wall carpeting, these insisted on it.

And while Provost likes a good test of

her skills, she found the master bath to be a particular puzzle. To create extra

storage space, she tucked touch-latch cabinets behind the wenge wood wall.

14

Left: At the other end of this great room is the

kitchen and bar area. Here, curved surfaces

help moderate the crisp coolness of modern

design. “If everything is angular, it can be jar-

ring, so I started using circles to calm it down. We had a lot of fun with that,” she says. That’s

obvious in the aquarium with its round portal,

and the conical shapes that base the end of

the island table and indoor bar.

Right: The outdoors reaches out to the

horizon when seen through a wall of

sliding glass doors that open to the ele-

ments with the touch of a switch. Sleek,

custom-fit furnishings complete the

space without interrupting the grand waterscape.

LESLIE SHERMAN Leslie Sherman Designs 3475 S Eastern Ave. Las Vegas, NV 89119 702-569-3664 shermandesigngroup.com

“Less is more, color is life is the mantra that inspires all my designs.”

PUSHING THE ENVELOPE

D

evelopers, architects and designers hoping to create a client’s dream home don’t always strike a unique note — sometimes fresh inspiration is missing. But with a keen eye for client inclinations and a forward thinking, “let’s create something new” attitude, the team of interior designers Leslie Sherman, interior designers Randi Scott and Tatum Johansson, architect John Cooney and builder Matt Knauf have melded their considerable talents to get it “just right” in the 12 highend home projects they’ve created together. In their most recent waterfront project, a 5,400-squarefoot, Award-winning model home on secluded Lake Las Vegas Cooney worked his magic to design a thoughtful, inspired and unique home. With a completely open concept floor plan, floor-to-ceiling glass walls, and ceiling heights ranging from 12 to 22 feet, the impact is striking. “Leslie and I wanted to push the envelope with this one, with a fresh, slightly edgy transitional coastal style,“ the architect says. n Left: Scott and Johansson worked with Sherman to define and

create the home’s interior style. Starting with a fresh, soft, contemporary vibe, the team chose a striking neutral and navy blue palette for maximum impact in the main living areas.

Above: “Design details and quality craftsmanship set this team apart,” he says. “We collaborate throughout the entire construction process to define unique features and select quality finishes.” One example of this is the box beam tongueand-groove ceiling details that flow seamlessly from one room to the next. Scott and Johansson worked with Sherman to define and create the home’s interior style. Starting with a fresh, soft, contemporary vibe, the team chose a striking neutral and navy blue palette for maximum impact in the main living areas. “Our goal is to create a stunning home from every perspective,“ Sherman says. “Each home we build is custom, a work of art.” The interior furnishings in this home are intentionally dramatic. “The compelling architectural design and impeccable construction would inspire nothing less,“ Scott says. “We reinterpret key design elements and repeat, which provides a cohesive and well thought out finished product.”

niture glistens with gold graining. Metallic glints from an Arteriors’ chandelier touch off the luminous contours of a navy blue-and-gray area rug that mirrors the tranquil lake on view from floor- to-ceiling windows.

MARY GRANDE CONTEMPORARY

PAINTED ARRANGEMENTS ARE METAPHORS FOR things in nature, both physical and spirtual. Elements and relationships come into being, evolve and phase out or transfor, just as in life. Like my painting, the process is fluid and organic, focusing on the evocative and poetic rather than the descriptive. Beginning with a feeling about or recollection of an experience, ongoing preoccupations and at times raw emotions, I began with automatic drawing - a series of gestural, linear movements that come from my interior - then move into shapes, movement and color to create a sense of harmony. 702-778-9098 • marygrandeart.com

DESIGN + STYLE

38

Up and Coming Trends

rom fashion to design, color, and more, it seems like trends come in and out of style before we get a chance to enjoy them. And while fads may be fleeting, they are a marker for great style, often living out—to some degree—longer than their time in the spotlight. Interior design trends in 2020 and beyond will center around wellbeing, comfort, and sustainability. January 1st has come and gone, but there’s still plenty of time to indulge in new looks. To help you make sense of some the best design crazes, we asked some of our favorite designers to share the top trends that are IN.

URBAN DESIGN I LAS VEGAS

INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS BOLDLY PATTERNED BACKSPLASHES "Simple, monochromatic kitchens have had a good long run, so we will be gravitating toward making a little more impact in their kitchens, whether that's with bolder color choices or graphic tiles. Either way, I predict we will be seeing more pop and punch in kitchens!" — Jan Baer.

MEMPHIS DESIGN "The Memphis movement is overtaking midcentury modern as the furnishing and color selection du jour. Primary colors and graphic shapes haven’t seen this much action since the eighties. Also in our space planning we are turning away from straight, rigid furniture lines and choosing enveloping tub chairs and Vladimir Kagan-esque curved sofas."— Carolyn Pressly.

FOUR-POSTER BEDS "In uncertain times, people tend to want spaces that bring a sense of comfort and safety. A four-poster bed provides that type of feeling. It's the closest thing you can get to a hug from a piece of furniture." — Amy Sklar.

LIGHT WOOD FLOORS "Light-colored floors are making a comeback, thanks to the homeowner's growing desire for a more airy and open look and feel. In shades of birch, beachy white and light oak, these floors reflect more light, and can transition from casual to luxurious, without sacrificing comfort."— Kesha Franklin.

BATHROOM MAKEOVER

Above/Before: One of Alice Colbib's friends said that it would be, “A crime against Las Vegas, to renovate her 1930s Art Deco era bathroom. But then again, it wasn't the friend who had to live with the "stinky plumbing and cracked tile," as Alice puts it. Opposite Page/After: Alice completely gutted the bathroom but did what is commonly called a "sensitive remodel:" retaining the feel of the original while updating it functionally. The result is a light-filled bathroom with vintage-inspired floor tiles, subway tile, a Caesarstone tub and countertops, frameless shower and tons of other fantastic touches. In the end, Alice rhetorically asks, "Was our 1930s bathroom remodel a 'crime against Las Vegas' or a respectful upgrade?" Definitely the latter.

Convivium is open space, a kitchen as an agile organised area, where being together becomes something to share anew every day, a place where a whole series of concrete actions – storing, preparing, cooking – are turned into rituals and emotions. Aromas in the kitchen tell of familiar tales or distant places, old recipes are handed down and new ones experimented and most importantly, everyone eats together around the big table. Convivium furnishes the walls of a room that becomes warm, welcoming and functional, with island-table in the centre and canopy shelves running round the whole room at picture rail height.

Above/Before: Not all bad, this kitchen features a good layout, adequate space and plenty of room for storage. The downside? Dated cabinets and a boring color scheme keep it from reaching its full potential. Opposite Page/After: Some small tweaks, like painting the cabinets and adding a fun graphic backsplash, transformed this kitchen into a more modern space. Matching appliances and two-toned cabinets contribute to a more sophisticated color scheme.

BACKYARD MAKEOVER

Above/Before: The owners of this property wanted to upgrade their existing pool into a space that would better accommodate young children and outdoor entertaining. Additionally, they requested that the new design blend with their home's architecture and have the atmosphere of a tropical retreat.

The existing pool on this property was unattractive and didn't accommodate young children well. The owners wanted a beautiful space where their kids could play safely and they could entertain friends. Instead of demolishing the existing pool, a second elevated pool that overlaps the original one was constructed. Opposite Page/After: This high-end swimming pool makeover has it all: a vanishing edge, a luxury spa, an outdoor fireplace, a large pool house with a full kitchen, a waterslide and much more. The upper pool is shallow and great for kids, while the lower pool is deep and even has a new waterslide. The makeover was completed with oversized granite pavers around both pools. 172

JEWEL ON THE LAKE Interior Design by Jennifer Covelli Text by Melinda Murphy Photogrpahy by Dennis Staley

T

he desire to build a magnificent dream home quickly became a reality for one couple when they met local builder Jennifer Covelli, President and CEO of Covelli Development Group. Jennifer first met these homeowners when they previously purchased one of his model homes in the Summerlin estates in Las Vegas. Fast-forward several years, the couple decided they wanted something a bit more private with enough land to give them the opportunity to build the perfect home for themselves and their family. “One of the main goals for this couple was to have a home with sprawling land in an area that offered great access to the shores of Lake Las Vegas waterfront, movie theaters, shopping and restaurants,” Covelli says. Trusting Jennifer’s recommendation, the couple discovered a stellar lakefront property and contracted Covelli Development Group to build this spectacular home consisting of 9,200 square feet under air and over 12,000 square feet under roof. This extraordinary piece of paradise — more than two-and-a-half sprawling acres nestled amidst the posh setting of Pine Ridge Estates — boasts sweeping panoramic vistas to the west overlooking Lake Las Vegas that allow for unparalleled sunset views that light up the evening skies. Commanding attention from the very first glimpse, this home’s exterior effortlessly combines classic architecture and timeless traditional style with cutting-edge modern amenities. A driveway lined with Royal palm trees introduces the house’s graceful symmetry and creates a dramatic prelude to the interior spaces that await. “I wanted to create a home with balance that had a peaceful open flow throughout,” Covelli says. “I also wanted to design a property that provided a majestic aura from the outside, yet a feeling of comfort and a sense of home on the inside.” UD Right: Outside, the loggia is the perfect entertainment space that includes a state-of-the-art Wolf grill for festive get-togethers. A custom, tongue-and-groove coffered ceiling defines the open-air space from above, while powered screens that encapsulate the area during sultry evenings allow tropical breezes to flow through. Automated drop-down hurricane shutters enclose the space at the touch of a button if necessary. “This project was a true collaboration with the owners who greatly influenced the many pieces we incorporated in the home that are reflective of their extensive travel throughout parts of Asia,” Covelli says. “We wanted this home to suit their personalities while offering a warm, welcoming place for friends and family … but most importantly, we wanted to be certain that we left them wanting for nothing.”

Right: Upon entry, the eye is immediately drawn to breathtaking views that take you through the foyer and living room to the pool and lake beyond. An elegant foyer stairway soars upward to lofty proportions that pinnacle with a beautifully coffered ceiling overhead. An air of distinction all its own resonates in the living room styled with a marble fireplace, tastefully appointed furnishings including a handsome pair of mahogany chests and exquisite upholstered pieces, and a custom-crafted coffered ceiling. The dining room follows suit with its opulent flooring, detailed beam ceiling, and an extraordinary wine room that spans from one wall to another.

Above and Right: “There are custom furnishings throughout the home that are designed and built by Tony Myers of New Age Design,” Covelli says. “We brought in Tony as we often do in many of our homes. He is an extremely gifted craftsman who understands scale and design. This provides wonderful pieces for the homeowner and eliminates an extensive search for lamp tables and cocktail tables that would scale well and fit nicely within the interior scheme.”

F

or months, Kirstin Jovanovski scoured design magazines seeking ideas for her dream home overlooking a prestigious Country Club. The wife of professional hockey player Ed Jovanovski wanted to find examples of the Caribbean/British West Indian influence for their 13,000-square-foot home in the Las Vegas desert.

Her desire was to create a fun and festive space that could translate to formality when necessary. “I come from a large Florida family … and now with four children of our own, we wanted a casual and comfortable home with a grand feeling that flows through,” Kirstin says. “I was involved in the design and architectural detail. I really like the plantation style, and wanted color and energy for our indoor-outdoor life which includes watching the beautiful boat action on the water.” The couple wanted an overall “beachy” feel but also a sense of vibrancy and whimsy. Using a black and white backdrop infused with bold pops of aqua and coral hues, and an eclectic mix of both sleek and coastal inspired furnishings, the designers created a look that reflects the playful personality of the family. “The interior integrates well with the outdoors,” Connor says. “It had to be functional, family friendly, and full of life and color,” says Connor, noting that the family also owns a pet Doberman. Utilizing many of Kirstin’s ideas, the house, with a clean white exterior, has both a relaxed and sophisticated feel. The mahogany entrance doors open to a stunning foyer. Polished white and silver checkerboard marble flooring shines. UD

Above: In fact, entertaining friends and family is one of the primary functions of the low-key, elegant loggia and pool area. With a flat-screen television above a large fireplace, wicker furniture and an aqua area rug covering marble flooring, this indoor-outdoor space is designed for easy South Florida living. “Synthetic woven finishes look natural yet are more durable,” Connor says. “And the mosaic-tiled pool — visible from the loggia beyond the white stucco columns — is exquisite.” Right: Across the way, the relaxed and informal living room is designed for enjoyment. A magnificent custom-designed black-wood, marble tile fireplace dominates the space, where natural light flows through floor-to-ceiling windows. Above the mantle, a strong piece of flamingo art bursts with a coral hue in complement to the sofa’s array of accent pillows.

Custom cabinetry showcases a dozen of Ed’s colorful hockey jerseys mounted in neat rows, while several flat-screen televisions and a dark wood billiards table invite fun and games.

hen award-winning architect, interior designer and builder Phil McCall saw this unique, nearly one-acre property facing a lake with golf course views as a backdrop, he knew he had found the perfect site to build a home. Lake Las Vegas Golf & Country Club is an exclusive gated community that attracts famous people from around the world. “I built a house here on spec for an imaginary client that I thought might buy it,” Kean says.

Considered to be one of the most sought-after architects in the USA, McCall likes to build all of his homes green using sustainable products. This innovative, 8,245-square-foot state-of-the-art, dual courtyard-style home is LEED certified gold and replete with many custom features. A modern stone veneer surrounds the custom front door designed by Kean, while solar panels convert sunlight into electricity for space conditioning and hot water systems. A Tesla Powerwall is used to store excess solar energy.

Inside, the elegant living room overlooks the Palm courtyard. Planned to feel like a glamorous yet intimate boutique hotel lobby, a massive wall of windows opens to the courtyard and then disappears completely into a wall to create the perfect indoor-outdoor living experience. “The concept of this home was that all of the glass would disappear and the house could live inside and out,” McCall says. Comfortable velvet-clad sofas in a charcoal hue are modern with traditional curves and grouped with low-slung armchairs covered in cream-colored linen from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams. Opposite, white leather-clad ottomans with chrome legs offer extra seating. A stunning LED chandelier designed by Kean adds shimmer to the sophisticated setting above Surya’s neutral-toned area rug in a geometric pattern that grounds the space in comfort. UD

Armchairs upholstered in a sugar-white hue with delicately curving backs edge the table. On view through large windows, the pool courtyard sparkles with a custom knife-edge perimeter-overflow pool.

ith nearly 8,500 square feet, the allure of this home captures the essence of its Summerlin community with branching streets and gracious properties linked by beautiful neighborhoods and the Las Vegas Strip.

Working closely together, the design team made enormous strides in creating an environment that is both relaxing and recreational. The timeless architecture, white stucco and rich mahogany doors of this British West Indies style house lend itself to the outdoors with an enchanting sub-tropical setting. Inside, a neutral palette creates a backdrop of soft elements and natural accents to promote a seamless flow that blurs the boundaries between inside and out. Everything is aligned symmetrically with high ceilings and windows that frame the exterior, allowing picture-perfect views. A little dimension goes a long way as wood ceiling beams are stained in pickling whitewash to promote a modest rustic flair. Meant to be comfortable, oversized furnishings in pale-beige linen shape a conversation grouping. UD

Right: The loggia is all encompassing with a kitchen, dining area, infinity pool, fire pit, and a cozy entertainment area with a fireplace and TV. The open-air space is styled with traditional rattan furniture that envelops a glass dining table from Ralph Lauren. Shellstone pavers naturally influence the space while a wood tongue-and-groove ceiling grants dimension.

Below: Not just a place for cookery but also a place for guests to gather, the kitchen is expansive, practical and aesthetically appealing with sleek white cabinetry that lines the walls. And in the center of it all, an oversized Calacatta marble waterfall island swirls with striations of dark gray and warm brown.

O

ne would be hard-pressed to conjecture how long it would take to furnish and accessorize a grand-scaled estate, but certainly several months would be reasonable. This was not the case for an estate in that had just been purchased by a northern couple. Purchasing and installing all the furnishings and accessories for the 13,000square-foot interior plus the loggia, terraces and guesthouse in a marathon four weeks could prove to be a formidable challenge. Not so for Santulli. “I walked in and the home had a vibe I really liked,” she says. Indeed the gleaming white, two-story California Missionstyle structure with bold, wide, curved arches is poetic in looks and quality. So much so that the owners opted out of first-floor window treatments so they could fully enjoy the architecture and outdoor vistas. Originally custom built for people who then chose a different home, the floors shone in beautifully patterned Jerusalem Limestone, the kitchen and bathrooms showcased top of the line appliances and facilities, and the walls throughout were clad in lustrous white Venetian Plaster. “That was the big break for this house,” Santulli says. “The architecture and clean palette afforded me unlimited possibilities, not locking me into a specific look.” Initially the owners sent Santulli a large assortment of pictures. The photos established the couple’s preferences of muted colors, a primarily contemporary style and a home where they could kick back and relax. To fulfill her four-week commitment, Santulli first contacted her best resources and put them on alert. She then utilized an efficient formula she devised which completely involved the owners. For each specific area in the home, she provided a trio of compatible options from which they could choose. “To keep things uncomplicated, all the furniture I picked works together in all the options,” Santulli says. UD

Right: The preponderance of stately arches that define the home’s exterior serves as prelude to the interior. Once in the living room, perfectly proportioned floor-to-ceiling glazed, arched windows invite a panoramic view of the couple’s 90-foot yacht. The monochrome off-white palette induces the calming yet low-key elegance desired. An Ipe Cavalli sofa and companion armchairs form a social grouping hearthside, while paintings with soft blues and muted tones of white add a dollop of color above two Allegra consoles.

Replete with a dark mahogany beamed ceiling, the relaxing space proves perfect for a light lunch or possibly watching the cook whip up a meal. Right: Just outside, the beckoning loggia continues the social spaces.
