DECODED CHAIR LORD ADEBOWALE CBE – CROSS BENCH PEER & CEO TURNING POINT AYISHAT AKANBI – STYLIST/ACTIVIST KIERAN YATES – JOURNALIST AYESHA HAZARIKA MBE - BPI, SENIOR ADVISOR/ STRATEGY AND COMMUNICATIONS RALPH HARDY - NANG KEITH HARRIS OBE - CHAIR, UK MUSIC DIVERSITY TASKFORCE Curated by Kieran Yates and chaired by Lord Adebowale MBE, our keynote discussion will debate politics and prejudice and the glass ceiling for urban artists. We will explore solutions including music as a catalyst for change and the role of artists and creatives as community leaders. THE POLITICS: #BRITSSOWHITE, #BLACKLIVESMATTER,
organised marches against police brutality, the refugee crisis and hate crimes post-Brexit have created a wider conversation about underlying prejudices
within our culture and the entertainment industry. Urban music is an independent driving force in the entertainment industry. Why is the industry still not a reflection of that diversity? THE ARTIST:
Artists like Big Narstie, Stormzy, JME and Novelist have led the charge by speaking out on representation, barriers and glass ceilings. There are untold journeys of struggle and victory to be shared. What are the personal barriers you have faced in your music journey? THE SOLUTION:
Mainstream apathy has led people of colour and other groups to create solutions to make their voices and stories heard. Voices like Kieran Yates, who last year created her own zine ‘British Values’, created a platform to tackle Britain’s antiimmigrant rhetoric.
BE A PART OF THE CONVERSATION.
