Finding Inspiration
M
y husband and I tackled a kitchen remodel project in our last house, and I’m pleased to report that we lived to tell about it. We joined the white-kitchenclub through a contracting project that grew from a basic cabinet overhaul to a full-on renovation – installing all new countertops, appliances and fixtures, removing walls, adding a bar area, and completing the look with an island that seats six. Overall, we had a wonderful experience (thanks to a very patient contractor), and the process delightfully reminded me how well we complement each other when making decisions. Honestly, there were some exhausting moments, but I was in my element as the transformation unfolded and all of the design details came to life. However, phase two of our project targeted several bathroom renovations, and we graciously decided to let the next family confront the remaining remodeling phases (somehow moving seemed easier!). As the pages of our kitchen and bath issue were coming together, I couldn’t help but pause at times to reminisce about that past kitchen project. But more so, I gained inspiration for future design endeavors. Modern Meets Organic Tom Holley designed a Dilworth home that’s got style, artistry, and sophistication – and zero clutter. By Page Leggett Photography by Dustin Peck

Texture is celebrated in this comfortable family room. A chevron ivory cowhide rug forms a beautiful base for modern furnishings like the custom faux shagreen ottoman with sliding table. The grey cut chenille/down loveseat and sofa provide plenty of space for fireside lounging. Barcelona chairs in distressed cigar leather are modern classics. Two ivory mosaic hide stools (under the metal/stacked-Brazilian Peroba wood console) provide extra seating when it’s needed. Acacia root consoles flank the fireplace.
hen Keith and Taya Muncy moved from one Dilworth home to another, they were serious about starting over. They moved just down the street, but everything except for the neighborhood was new. When the couple moved with their two sons from one block of McDonald Avenue to the next, they took just two things with them – a leather chair and an ottoman. Both found a place in the flex space above the detached, three-car garage they built out after moving in. Tom Holley of Crazy Jane’s gave them the fresh start and updated, modern look they wanted. Their new 5,000-square-foot home is a showplace. Literally. It was on the Dilworth Home Tour last year. Its brickand-shingle exterior is in keeping with the historic neighborhood’s vibe, but the facade is unmistakably modern. Soft textures abound in this master retreat. Ann Gish bedding is luxurious; so is the custom upholstered headboard with modern nailhead detail. A super-plush custom shag carpet feels yummy on bare feet. Mirrored nightstands are topped with just Selenite quartz lamps. Simple perfection! A Peroba wood bench at the foot of the bed adds a dose of rusticity, while a midcentury-inspired grey pique cotton chair provides cozy seating. When they’re shut, top-down natural reed shades make the room feel cocoon-like.
The Muncys worked with Ram Construction to build a home that lives the way they do. One of the most interesting features, Holley says, is that the home doesn’t have a dining room. Most people say they never use that room, anyway, so the Muncys got rid of it altogether. Instead, they have a banquette upholstered in vibrant teal that’s located just off the monochromatic kitchen, which comfortably seats ten people. Out with formality, in with functionality. The couple worked easily with Holley. “They made every furniture, accessory, and fabric choice with me, and the house is so them,” Holley says. They had just one edict: They did not want clutter. They wanted modern, clean lines, and nothing
frou-frou to detract from the home’s good design and some furniture pieces Holley calls “works of art themselves.” “Notice the long console table in the foyer,” he says. “It only has a painting above it. There’s nothing on the table itself. You don’t need anything else when your furniture makes that much of a statement.” The overall effect of such an orderly space is tranquility-inducing. Holley says the Muncys were ideal clients. “We’re on the same page,” he says. He, too, is a fan of modern, clean lines. But that doesn’t mean everything in the home is straight and angular. There are plenty of curvilinear forms here, too. Holley likes to mix modern and organic, so there are some undulating curves mixed with the right angles. A piece like the

showstopping console table in the foyer is full of movement. Its resin material and shine are upto-the-minute contemporary, but its shape is like something you’d expect in a mountain cabin. “It’s meant to mimic roots coming out of the ground,” Holley explains. There’s another one-of-a-kind console upstairs. It’s made from a reclaimed gear. There’s the sense of movement again. The lamp on the glass top table mimics the shape. Holley is big on texture – rich velvets, animal hide rugs, seagrass, reclaimed wood, buttery leathers. “The Barcelona chairs are made of cigar leather, so they have that old, crackled look,” he says. “Same with the Eames chair in the office.” Holley also likes bringing the best of nature indoors. Stone, petrified wood, and agate are just a few of the materials used in the furnishings he found for the Muncy home. August / September 2017 | Home Design & DecoR Charlotte 51
Pull up a stool, and grab a drink. Natural materials meet modern lines in the basement bar where reclaimed wood-and-metal barstools line up in front of a reclaimed wood bar. The lighting (Edison bulbs!) manages to be both old-fashioned and up-to-the-minute.

When these folding doors are open, one space (indoors) can flow freely into the next (outdoors). Woven synthetic furniture is easy to clean. A concrete coffee table on metal wheels is artistic … and virtually indestructible.
Yet an antique is not out of place in this otherwise thoroughly modern home. Antique overdyed Turkish rugs are among the distinctive floor coverings Holley helped choose. The house has multiple levels and a few surprises in a home that looks straightforward. For instance, half a flight of steps up from the main level on a mezzanine level is the boys’ play room. The Muncys didn’t abandon their modern aesthetic there. Even the blue-and-orange play room has clean lines and a sense of structure. There’s also a spiral staircase that leads from the basement family room and bar to a first-floor outdoor area – just one of the al fresco spaces the family gets to enjoy. The Muncy home proves that you don’t have to go far to make a big change. And you don’t need a bunch of extraneous stuff when your furniture speaks for itself.u

uilt in America from 1933 to 1965, mid-century modern homes were based on the simple, accessible layouts developed by architects in Scandinavia and continental Europe. Fifty years later the functionality, ease, and modern simplicity of mid-century design are sought after in Charlotte, which has the third largest concentration of mid-century modern homes in America. Charlotte experienced much of its population growth during the period when modern architecture was becoming mainstream. John Kincheloe, architect leader of LS3P Envision Studio and past president of the Historic Charlotte Board, explains that as the city grows, it is attracting a young, diverse population with an interest in modern design. “There is a renewed appreciation for the unique design qualities of mid-century modern homes, which have found a new audience of people who value and appreciate good design and look for that in all areas of their lives, including their homes,” he says. The Charlotte Museum of History is working to preserve this important part of the city’s history and keep interest in mid-century modernism alive through its Mad About Modern Home Tour, now in its sixth year. This one-day self-guided tour takes you inside some of the city’s best examples of mid-century modern style and architecture. This year’s tour, held Saturday, September 9, from 10 am to 4 pm, will feature seven homes. To prepare you for Mad About Modern, we’re providing a snapshot of three of the amazing homes on the tour.

The Natural Light House 6827 Folger Drive
With its trellis entryway, custom brick detail, and planters framing the front, this home caught Tammy and Alan Baker’s eye when they relocated to Charlotte four years ago. Once inside, they saw past its current condition, which was that it had been rented for years, and fell in love with the natural light from the wall of glass windows and oversized sliding doors that open to a full-length deck. Then there is the large, open living area with its massive fireplace and concrete geometric block façade, which was painted in a bright red glaze when they first saw the home. “We repainted it and put in a gas line with cut glass instead of logs,” Tammy says. The house also has some Frank Lloyd Wright characteristics, including the cantilever of the deck and the deck’s roofline with no supporting columns.

The couple renovated areas of the home to complement its modernist exterior. They installed white oak wood floors throughout the living and kitchen area and turned a vintage dresser from the ‘60s into a vanity in the hall bath renovation. Furniture from Mid Century Salvage and estate sales completes the look. The home still has its original vinyl terrazzo floor and exterior can downlights on the eaves of the roof. “Everyone knows our house,” Tammy says. “It glows red at night!”

“Adulthood can make you too serious,” Jonathan Adler says in his book, My Prescription for Anti-Depressive Living. If that’s true, Emily and Hunt Allen found their antidote in this sleek, California-style ranch. The Hunts purchased the home from its original owner, Charlotte architect Gene Warren, who designed and built the home in 1963. While they enlarged and remodeled the kitchen and refreshed the interior, which they described as very traditional, the new owners were careful to preserve the home’s mid-century modern character. Two examples are the original white enamel Malm freestanding fireplace, a focal point in the home’s main living area, and the tubular skylights throughout the home that bring in natural light by day and moonbeams by night.

“We loved the high ceilings and the exposed wooden beams,” Emily says, who made all the design updates herself, purchasing kitchen cabinets at IKEA and collecting treasures that met the mid-century aesthetic at flea markets and consignment stores. “But the surprise of this house is that it’s a lot larger and more open on the inside than it appears from the outside. The owner added on a playroom and master suite in the ‘70s, so the house offers more than meets the eye.

The James Bond House 3517 Johnny Cake Lane
Leslie and Alan Sykes prefer homes with a lot of history that are untouched, with all or most of the original elements present. In search of a larger home for their growing family, they were thrilled when the Andrew Hearn house came on the market. Andrew Hearn was the designer, contractor, and original owner of their unique home, which was built in 1964. Inspired by the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, Hearn incorporated many unique elements in the home, from its entrance bridge straddling a small koi pond to the round kitchen and floating staircase. The Sykes fell in love the moment they saw the home and bought it in August of last year. They have been carefully rehabilitating the home since, repairing water damage and making necessary electrical and plumbing updates. Except for the master bathroom, which had to be renovated due to damage, all bathrooms in the home are original. The basement bathroom has its original 1960s James Bond wallpaper with images from three Bond films released in the mid-60s,

which is still in remarkable condition. “Our goal is to keep the mid-century feel of the house intact in all our renovations,” Leslie says. “We don’t want to strip away what made the house unique in the 1960s.” One of Leslie’s favorite updates was actually a retro-renovation. She removed the 1990s-era ovens and replaced them with a pair of 1960s electric Chambers ovens, which were the Vikings of their day. She was able to track down a matching pair of working electric Chambers ovens from the 1960s – a true miracle since the company made mostly gas ranges and not electrical.

fter being repeatedly asked to design kitchens that were not only functional but that also included elements of the most livable areas of the home, designer Heather Garrett figured it was time to devote some energy to a new solution. She has partnered with CKS Millwork to create a single source for interior design and custom cabinetry, ideal for clients looking to blur the line
between kitchen and living room. The result: The Living Kitchen by Heather Garrett. “The Living Kitchen project is really ideal for families that are looking to remodel their kitchens all together, streamlining them with the living space,” Garrett suggests. Her clients Lynn and Logan Toms offer the perfect example of the trending concept. “The kitchen was a U-shape with a bar that opened up to the breakfast area,” Garrett recalls. “The problem was no one August / September 2017 | Home Design & DecoR Charlotte 67

ever sat in the breakfast area – they sat at the bar, which isn’t relaxing. So, it just didn’t make sense for them.” Garrett started by gutting the kitchen and adjusting the ceiling heights to seamlessly merge the two areas. She exchanged the breakfast table for a sofa and club chair and added a wooden coffee table. She also recessed a television flanked by sconces because, as she puts it, “let’s be real about the TV; that’s going to happen with the children hanging out in the kitchen.” CKS Millwork created a 5-foot by 8-foot island made of dark walnut reclaimed wood and created a lengthened overhang so people could sit at the bar. “This flowed naturally with the new morning room, allowing family to eat at the bar and retire to the couch,” Garrett explains.
After six months of renovation, Garrett and the Toms had completely torn out the kitchen and replaced all of the cabinets and all of the appliances. They added molding to keep a balance between modern and traditional, installed a wine fridge into the wet bar, and went up and out with tile covering the walls. The result was a practical and livable space that functioned as a true living kitchen. “This kind of space is considered a trend, but it’s a trend that’s becoming a standard. It’s got longevity,” Garrett says. “At the end of the day, I know it has longevity when the Toms’ daughter told me that they live in that space day and night,” Garrett says. “That’s the whole point – it’s serving its purpose.”u

hen a young family of five decided to expand and update their existing home’s kitchen, they need look no further than interior designer Anne Wagoner. Wagoner, who established Anne Wagoner Interiors in 2010, has a talent for creating timeless interiors that reflect her clients’
varying lifestyles. “I was first exposed to the industry through my grandmother’s antique shop, where I spent many summers, as well as buying trips abroad,” Wagoner says. “My grandmother deserves credit for fostering my passion and serving as a wonderful role model.” Wagoner is known for addressing the bones of each space she designs, saying she feels “the most essential element to any design is a classic foundation”. Her latest project does just that.

When the couple came to the realization that they had outgrown their kitchen, they put necessity into action and assembled a team to update the hub of their home. “Before the renovation, the house was close to perfect – gorgeous moldings, original character, hardwood floors, a perfect location, and the list goes on. But the homeowners were limited by a small kitchen that prevented them from interacting with family and friends on a daily basis. The homeowner wanted to increase counter space where her children could do their homework or make Christmas cookies while she cooked. She wanted to create a gathering space that was lacking in the original house. The kitchen renovation was the final step in making this family’s house the perfect home,” Wagoner says. The home was originally built in 1939 by the first homeowner himself – the current homeowners are just the third family to live there. Factoring in the new kitchen space, the home now totals around 4,000 square feet.
The challenge with this renovation lay within the duality of accommodating a modern lifestyle while at the same time, maintaining the original character of a traditional home. An open-concept floor plan, which combines the kitchen and adjacent living area into a single space, was not an option for this house. “A home built in the ‘30s would not have had an open-concept floor plan. We wanted to increase living space for the homeowners but consciously defined each room with cased openings to preserve the integrity of a traditional floor plan,” Wagoner says. While Wagoner conceptualized the overall design for the project, builder Sam Barrow of Barrow Building Co was an integral part of both the vision and execution of the renovation. A dated screened porch was transformed into an updated and now-enclosed extension of the remodeled kitchen. New custom cabinetry, appliances, and hardwood floors were installed. “The goal was to seamlessly blend the new space with the old as if it

had always been a part of the home, but to create functionality for a busy family of five,” Barrow says. Wagoner says she encouraged the homeowners to go with a European style for the kitchen, adding touches like a La Cornue-inspired range hood that was custom-built by blacksmith Lucas House of IronHouse Forge. Subway tile was installed on the entirety of the range wall instead of a standard backsplash. All millwork, including cased openings, crown molding, and baseboards were painted a soft grey to add character and attention to detail. The final result is an updated space that maintains the charm and character of the original home. Wagoner says she couldn’t be happier with the finished product. “My goal is always the same – create a space classic enough to stand the test of time yet innovative enough to be thoughtprovoking.”u
Wagoner designed the bar in close proximity to the family and dining rooms for optimal entertaining purposes. Antique brass wire mesh replaces the glass in the upper cabinets which are separated by the classic antiqued mirror backsplash.

Unseen Marcy Gregg’s latest exhibition invites you to find inspiration in her hidden art, and in her extraordinary journey. By Sandra Scott

t was only eight months ago that Anne Neilson Fine Art gallery was nestled in a quiet corner of SouthEnd among private artist studios and an antique shop. Just shy of their three-year anniversary, the gallery relocated and now operates out of a 5,200 square-foot space in the bustling shops at Morrison situated in the heart of SouthPark. Anne Neilson, owner and artist, opened the gallery with a mission to give back through art. She continues to commit a portion of all art sales to various local charities and organizations including The Harvest Center and Samaritan’s Feet. The gallery’s roster of more than 40 diverse artists worldwide continues to be influential in the art and design community, landing in private and corporate collections around the world. Anne Neilson Fine Art gallery’s upcoming August exhibition will highlight one of their most recognizable artists and Charlotte local Marcy Gregg. Gregg’s compelling abstracts, simultaneously described as ethereal and modern, embody the divine grace bestowed upon her life over 20 years ago. She sold her successful business in 2006 and returned to her true passion – art. “I experience great joy when I stand in front of a canvas,” Gregg says. “In my miraculous healing, God gave me a second chance; and each day that I paint I have a second chance to pursue my love of art.” Today, 11 years after committing her life to painting, Gregg’s work can be found in galleries and private collections across the nation. “Unseen,” her second solo show with Anne Neilson Fine Art, is a collection of work that exposes her intimate process; a process that began several years ago and continues to influence her work today. The beginning of each piece is covered top to bottom with Scripture. Even as layer after layer is applied, it remains the heart of the painting and serves as inspiration for the piece’s title when complete. ome of Eric Collins’ fondest childhood memories center on his family’s in-ground pool, a communal venture his family took on with their next-door neighbors and life-long friends. “Together, they made the investment to create a place where we could all gather and have fun and live life. We had a generation of love and joy experienced poolside.” When Collins took a job as the voice of the Charlotte Hornets, his family faced a necessary relocation to Charlotte from Chicago, where they’d just purchased their dream home. Collins’ wife, Keri Bartholomew, was hesitant and insisted she and their elementaryaged kids stay in their home while Collins lived remotely. “I was adamant we could make this unconventional home-life work…at first,” Keri says. “Less than two months in, I caved, but I did resort to one element of bribery, convincing Eric to pull the trigger on his lifelong desire to build our own dream pool.” He enthusiastically agreed. Keri and the kids joined him in Charlotte, and they purchased a beautiful home in Barclay Downs. The two accepted several bids from contractors, but their desire for a small, boutique-style builder made Pool By Design an easy sell. “We first met with Tommy who truly listened to our story, taking into account what we wanted from a pool and what it would mean for our family. He and Simon Spiers worked tirelessly during the entire process to make sure we were completely satisfied with the final product.” What they wanted was a no-frills, contemporary take on the traditional in-ground pool designed for play. “There was no back and forth on the shape — the classic rectangular design best fit our needs. The idea was to take the traditional and ‘Taj Mahal’ it, making it a natural extension of our outdoor living space.” The overall design goal was to create continuity, making the pool addition and outdoor renovation a seamless extension of the existing home aesthetic. The pitch of the backyard required them build a stacked stone retaining wall to functionally support the pool while also aesthetically dividing it from the outdoor living space. A planting area on top of the wall, where Keri keeps white rose bushes, pulls the two areas together while also creating a natural privacy screen. The pool design is simple and straightforward with a sprayed gray lining, which gives the water a darker appearance that changes with the direction of the sunlight, as well as a tanning ledge that is a favorite hang-out spot for soaking up the sun or letting the little ones play in shallow water. The house’s white brick with gray trim is mimicked in the earthen-hued tiles that give the feel of an organic, natural beach, and an expanse of green lawn was preserved for the children. An alcove eating area and an old-European, Tuscany-inspired aesthetic created with bluestone rounded out the outdoor living space. Now, the family spends most of their time in their new outdoor space, either swimming or enjoying meals al fresco. “I enjoy trimming my trees and bushes, and Eric loves taking care of the pool,” Keri
says. “It’s been a terrific investment – not just in our quality of life, but in our family as well.” “Putting in a pool was the best way to honor my mother’s memory and the investment my parents made during my own childhood,” Collins says. “Some of the best moments of my life — the ones that made me who I am — happened in and around that pool, and I want those same experiences for my family now.” u Want to recreate your own treasured childhood pool experience? or 32 years, Diana Weimer has been helping customers create gorgeous coverings for their windows. What started as an in-home custom drapery business as a means to stay at home with her children, has turned into a family owned and operated business and a showroom exclusively offering Hunter Douglas window coverings. Respecting the Shower
O
ne of the things I love about the residential remodeling business is that every home and every client is unique. This means that with each new project, we accept new challenges that help us evolve – we are constantly evolving to meet the needs of our clients. In the history of our business, and residential design in general, nothing has evolved nearly as much as our love for custom showers. Often, as we discuss the remodel of a master bathroom, we hear a common phrase over and over, which is, “we almost never use our tub.” Ironically, it’s the unused tub that takes up the most usable space in a bathroom. Sometime in the 1980s, it became fashionable to have a large drop-in tub, frame an even larger deck to support it, and then design the rest of the bathroom around it with whatever space was leftover. The shower was often cinched in the process, creating a space that got smaller and smaller, eventually feeling more like a phone booth. Otherwise, if there

was space for a larger shower, it became a dark cavernous space surrounded by walls covered in tile. Neither option seems acceptable. Today, we design and remodel bathrooms in a way that gives due respect to the shower. After all, it’s the one room in your home that you’ll use nearly every day. It needs to be comfortable and inviting instead of cramped and dark. There are many great products and design ideas in the marketplace that you can incorporate to customize your modern-day shower. Here are some suggestions to help you decide: Recessed Storage Niches Tucked into the wall, these keep the soap and hair products out of the way and your shower looking neat. Frameless Glass This surround creates a crisp and clean enclosure that looks great and is easy to maintain.
Multiple Shower Functions You could plumb your shower to feel like a car wash with a whole suite of sprayers, but at a minimum a separate hand-held showerhead is handy when cleaning, sitting, or shaving your legs. If you plan to use it as a second showerhead, it can be installed on an adjustable slide bar. If you’ll use it in your hand, a simple bracket works just as well. Thermostatic Shower Controls If finding the perfect temperature for the water each time feels like a hassle, consider a thermostatic shower system. A thermostatic system has one valve that only controls the temperature, so you can find the perfect temperature and lock it in. Each showerhead has a separate volume control allowing you to customize your shower experience as needed. Bench Seating or Foot Props This feature will “give you a leg up” in your shower design and benches are great for those that have trouble standing or just want to relax. A bench seat is highly recommended for universal design. Steam Generator This creates the ultimate “in-home-spa” experience, especially when combined with bench seating. Curb-Free Base Essential for a barrier-free or walk-in shower design, this is another great feature for those who plan to age in their forever home. u

Layering a Living Room
T
here is something special about an old house, with its plaster walls, high ceilings, and original windows. They’re built to last and obviously they have, making it through layer upon layer of décor and personalization. I have an older home with character, and instead of tearing out the quirks and character, I’ve embraced them and it has made the home that much more interesting. It was a treat to work on this previously formal living area, giving it new life with updated furniture and colors. What was once a dark and dated space is now fresh and bright – and it was all in the details. We fell in love with the original tall pocket doors, large moldings, and old coal fireplace. We also chose to keep the bookcases, but added doors to the bottom to give it a cleaner look. Starting with a new color palette of white and grey with a pop of green, we chose modern furniture to contrast with the traditional architecture of the space. The key is layering the details and mixing the old with new. Casual furniture combined with a modern fixture, large art as a focal point, and well-placed bookcase accessories (all in like colors) help a rather small room look bigger and less formal. Some quick tips to adding personality to a room: try layering rugs for added texture; splurge on one large piece of art as opposed to several smaller ones; mis-match your side tables using different woods and metals; add a contrast color, or in this case, an

My Favorite Room in the House
W
hile designing their homes, clients will often ask me which room in a home is my favorite. Being both a general contractor and a designer, I’m lucky to get to create many lovely homes with plenty of good-looking, high-functioning rooms. I’m wild about a hardworking mudroom, sumptuous master bath, and intimate study. Still, my favorite room of all is easily the kitchen. It’s often said that the kitchen is the heart of the home, and for our family and many of our clients, it is certainly that. A beautiful and inviting kitchen just makes a soul happy. And a well-thought-out and organized kitchen is the icing on the cake. Whether a tiny farmhouse kitchen or a colossal gourmet kitchen, planning this space out well and using an inviting mix of materials is uber important – but it can sometimes be a daunting task. Designing kitchens is my specialty; I love to create function-specific spaces like coffee and drink stations, baking and cooking prep areas, and dish and glassware storage that is both accessible to setting the table and unloading the dishwasher. A well-designed kitchen is practically effortless to keep organized and makes food prep so much quicker and much more enjoyable. Most importantly, it makes busy moms’ and dads’ lives that much easier. Function and practicality are seriously important, but it’s only half the equation of a topdrawer kitchen. The other half is artistry. The combination of handcrafted cabinetry, smooth stone countertops, polished fittings, and foot-worn floorboards is an intoxicating mix. Add some hand-glazed tilework and some copper cookware, and for me, it’s almost an ethereal experience. All this organically-designed goodness is more than enough to make a designer happy. But for me, the real joy of a beautiful kitchen is the life that unfolds in this particular room. It’s tiptoeing into an early morning kitchen to grab your first cup of coffee before anyone else is awake. It’s pouring a much-needed glass of your favorite wine to wind down

at the end of day as you start to make dinner. It’s your kids doing their homework and making crafts around the kitchen table. It’s making dozens of holiday cookies on your kitchen island for your annual cookie exchange and then standing around that same island (even though your entire home is decorated and ready for company) with the girls laughing and catching up and eating those cookies! It’s wrapping presents and birthday dinners. It’s cleaning scraped knees and wiping away tears and lemonade spills and bathing your babies in that big farmhouse sink.
