chic
funky
by Mark Herrmann
here is no better description of the home of Paige McThenia and Jon Adams, than “funky chic”. When you enter the home, you are naturally drawn to the eclectic decorating style that epitomizes homeowners that take a genuine interest in personalizing their home. Their love of art, design, found objects and the outdoors permeate this recent showcase home from the Elizabeth Home Tour. We thought it would be a good idea to interview this fun and eclectic couple to understand their personal interests and how that influenced the choices for their home. What are the top influences in your life that impact your style? A love of rustic nature and modern architecture and a general irreverence about design rules. Favorite color: All—(Paige) Really just about all colors if they are used as accents on white.
Favorite things to do to relax / spend spare time: (Paige) Whitewater kayaking, hiking with dogs in the mountains, planting things, making messy art projects with daughter and neighborhood kids; (Jon) Hiking with the dogs, fishing, and watching Paige make wonderful, messy art projects with the kids. Tell us some history of your house. The house was built in 1930 and had had a small back area added onto it at some later date. One neighbor told us it had once been abandoned and condemned. Another neighbor told us a previous owner put a coffee can with $100 in it up in the chimney. Jon and I don’t know much else about its history. What drew you to this particular neighborhood? Elizabeth has a wonderful mix of businesses and residences, and despite the fact that it’s a well-established neighborhood, it’s still a bit edgy and artistic and diverse. Jon and I love walking through the neighborhood under the canopy of old trees and seeing the ways in which neighbors have avoided traditionally regimented landscaping and instead created wonderful individualized gardens around their homes.
Car: (Paige) Subaru Outback; (Jon) Jeep Grand Cherokee. Dream car: (Paige) Newer Subaru Outback without kid spills, bike scratches, and wet kayak gear smell; (Jon) An old pickup truck that gets good gas mileage. Last song downloaded: Plastic Jesus sung by Paul Newman in Cool Hand Luke. Favorite music: Bluegrass Favorite local restaurant: Lulu
Describe the condition of your home when you found it. The house was the color of a Georgia peach when I moved in; the porch was dark and screened, all of the windows were bolted and painted shut, and the back and side yards were overgrown with kudzu, morning glories, wisteria, and English Ivy. What did you want to change to the structure and why? We got married in 2007, and, collectively with my daughter and Jon’s step-daughter Finley (the now 11 year-old), we wanted to make the house our own together. It was pretty desperately in need of updating. Finley’s bedroom was a converted attic space without a door and ours was a back bedroom off the kitchen. The living room mar/apr 2011 Urban Home Charlotte

was cave-like, and the kitchen, in our view, had been “unfortunately” renovated at some point in the past. We wanted lots of light and open space and room for kids and animals and friends to gather, but also more privacy for ourselves. In addition, we wanted to maintain the integrity of the bungalow so that it remained in keeping with the neighborhood. How did you go about doing this? Who was the design team? Andrew (Woody) Woodruff, Architect; Peter Vasseur and Craig Jackson, Vasseur Home Design; Meghan Hayes and Mike Kenerly, The Essential Gardener. The result was an amazing team of energetic, creative, hardworking, and inspired individuals that created a home we feel very fortunate to live in. We didn’t go into the renovation process with many firm ideas about how we wanted the house to look. We knew that we wanted to reuse as much of the old house as possible, make environmentally sensitive choices, and that we wanted creative input from everyone involved. For example, upon running into a foundational problem, Peter suggested the concrete floor in the family room. We liked it, as did Craig and Woody, and then we all weighed in on the stain (or lack thereof) color. The concrete choice led to a decision to make the back of the house more modern than the front, the result of which was a metal siding that mimics the original wood siding. How long did the transformation take place? Peter and Craig told us the renovation would take them six months to complete, and they finished right on time. The house has a 100 percent Energy Star rating. Tell us about how the industrial theme of the house came to be. Going into the renovation, we loved the look and feel of a combination of industrial materials with rustic, natural materials. Peter and Craig worked to make this a reality with great suggestions that resulted in an I-Beam mantle, steel plates, bolts and wire cables on the stairs, and unfinished steel columns on the back concrete patio. In addition, I found wonderful recycled railroad spike coat hooks on the Etsy website. Coupled with this is a juxtaposition of salvaged wood bookshelves, the pebble floor in the master shower, and a split cedar log that serves as a shelf in the master bathroom. For the backyard, we utilized the Galvalume metal siding that is on the back of the house for fencing material, and galvanized horse troughs for planters. I love the way this looks with the native grasses and wildflowers. What is the significance of the circle in the design? The circles started with the door. The door insert is an artistic lead glass panel made of hand blown rondels surrounded by clear handblown seedy glass. It was designed by a very talented glass artist named Guido Goldkühle I found online. The door is one of my favorite parts of the house design project, and the glass rondels set the tone for the circles throughout the house—the Edison bulb light fixture above the dining room table, the circle in the kitchen wall (the circumference of which matches that of the light fixture), the art panels along the fence in the back yard. I think that the circles soften the modern industrial aspects of the house. Tell us about the various ‘collections’ of items you have throughout the home. What are your favorite arrangements / groupings and why? We love what we call our very own “Cabinet of Natural Curiosities” (after Albertus Seba’s natural history volume of the same name). The oak cabinet contains bones, shells, rocks, butterfly wings, birds’ nests, turtle shells, and bee hives—most of these treasures we collected
on family trips and hikes. In 2009 my family all came to celebrate Thanksgiving with us. We made the task of hanging pictures a family affair after dinner and over drinks one night. No one wanted to move far, so most of the art ended up climbing the stairwell, a bit less measured and precisely spaced as it went up and as the night went on. There is very little rhyme or reason to the order of the art, and we love the crazy jumble of a fine photograph next to a thrift store find and the memory of the evening in general. Jon also has a wonderful collection of duck decoys carved by his grandfather in the downstairs bathroom. What do these small collections say about your style? Rustic modern and irreverent. Why did you use an aluminum material on the outside as siding? Mainly, our desire to use low maintenance, environmentally sensitive materials combined with our sense of aesthetics. The Galvalume was the result for both the siding and the fence. No grass in the backyard! Why? We wanted an outdoor space that reflected our concern for the environment and our love of nature but that could also hold up to the rough and tumble activities of a 10 year old daughter with lots of friends, all of the neighborhood kids, and a variety of four-legged creatures—be they pets or wildlife. Meghan and Mike sat down with us to talk about xeriscaping and native plants and river rocks. We told them we liked tall grasses, and we told them we liked rivers. And the result is their own creation—a beautiful, sustainable, inspiring and absolutely livable organic landscape. Describe how the interior design came to be. How long did this take? We moved into Jon’s house over in Chantilly while this house was being renovated. The interior design of the 8th Street began as a design challenge: how to blend Jon’s Pottery Barn meets Ernest Hemmingway man style with my eclectic mix of family antiques, vintage chrome furniture left over from a first marriage, and lots of rocks. (Jon’s living room was painted the color of his favorite Woolrich barn jacket. My dining room table looked like a geologist’s lab.) During the six months we were in Chantilly, we began to weed out things that neither of us liked from our respective homes, discuss things we wanted to keep, and look at things we wanted to buy together. It was a period of often intense negotiation. And when we moved back in, we just began trying things out here and there, blending our furniture and accessories and books, creating a style that we think is uniquely our own. What are your favorite places to shop for your home? Habitat Restore, a couple of antique malls in Virginia, and on-line places like Etsy, Overstock, Viva Terra, and Velocity Art and Design. Tell us about Finley’s room. There are two parts to the kid area: the first at the top of the stairs is a loft area with games, futon couch (great for sleepovers), a television and movies, and a wall length chalkboard. Past that is Finley’s bathroom, and a small cubbyhole space that was once attic storage. It is now a reading nook, with a cow print bean-bag chair, small table for books, a Sola-tube for light during the day and a really cool gourd light that casts a star pattern for nighttime. It is secret and small and cozy and bright. On the other side of the stairs is Finley’s room. She desperately wants to go to Kenya on a safari, so the whole room is designed around that idea. There is a lovely stretched canvas photo of a giraffe on a savannah over her desk, vintage photos of African animals printed as pillows on an old brass bed from Jon’s family, grass-like green shag rug, a hammock chair hanging from the ceiling, and mar/apr 2011 Urban Home Charlotte

these crazy giant flower and monkey wall decals we found together on Etsy. Her desk is an old law school desk of my father’s and the chair a knock-off plastic Eames chair from Overstock. What kind of furniture appeals to you? I love mid-century modern designs—especially Emeco Navy chairs, Bertoia stools, and Cherner molded plywood designs. That being said, both of us own a number of family antique pieces, mostly American and some primitive, that we also love: My great-grandfather’s spool bed in the guestroom, my grandmother’s dresser in the master bedroom and sewing stand by the front door, Jon’s grandfather’s smoking stand and cherry chest of drawers in the study, the loveseat in the living room that came from my grandmother and that was once owned by William Jennings Bryan when he was Secretary of State under Woodrow Wilson (it was covered in leather and stuffed with horsehair when it was passed down to my father). And we have collected some things of our own—the two Danish modern armchairs in the living room were purchased from the Habitat Restore in Charlotte and the church pew in the living room came out of an old church in Rockbridge County, Virginia where I grew up. What’s your decorating secret? Read lots of design magazines. Find pictures of what you love and what works for your home and family. Be iconoclastic. Take risks. Design around what you love. How did you go about accessorizing your home? We combined things we both had before we were married and began collecting things together. We love Etsy, and we bring some natural object back from every hike we take. What’s your favorite room in your home? The master bedroom with the windows all open with the view out over the backyard. Tell us about the outside. Does your family spend a lot of time outdoors? We spend as much time as we can outside. Our new favorite place is the boulder out front (a birthday present from Jon to me) and the new herb garden beside it created by Finley’s friends in remembrance of her grandmother, my mother, who died last fall. The boulder has become a favorite place for neighborhood kids to play, for star gazing, and for people watching, and that is exactly what we wanted.v

Dream Pool
In today’s economy, many homeowners are staying put. While resale values used to factor into home improvements, now the emphasis is on what makes the current homeowner happy – indefinitely. No one knows this better than well-known Ballantyne real-estate agent David Huss. When it came time to make a judgment call on his family’s Kensington home, the choice regarding a pool or no pool was a resounding “yes.” The Huss family had moved to this home from a house with a three-car garage. With growing storage needs, David decided to add a two-car garage and bonus room. Thanks to the contractor, who suggested including a pool during the work, the idea to put in a pool at the same time crystallized. Simon Spiers, owner of Pool by Design, took the process up a notch. The goal was to take care of the garage and pool construction in tandem. Breaking ground in September 2007 allowed the pool process to begin, then go on hold to allow the garage construction to take over during the harsher winter months, and returning to the pool finale in spring 2008. This tiered schedule was implemented to prevent any damage to the pool’s finish dur-
ing the garage construction work. “Often, we can also save costs to homeowners by working simultaneously because we can share gas, electrical, and water hookups,” Simon points out. What if a home-resale factor develops? “Simon created a large additional living space for us,” David says. “Certain types of pools and designs can better benefit your home value, and Simon’s designs focus on presentation, decking, and making it fit the house and lifestyle.” The post-service bar set by Pool by Design also draws accolades. Simon’s goal after a pool is built is to always be available to educate the homeowner on its care, “If a homeowner needs us to come back out and show them how to operate the pool again, we consider it a privilege,” Simon says. David agrees and recommends Pool by Design to neighbors and clients who ooh and aah over his pool. “Pool by Design did all they said they would and more – on schedule,” David says. Coming from a real-estate agent, that is news worth spreading and then some.v For more information on Pool by Design visit www.poolbydesign.com or stop by 217 Fairwood Avenue. Most people don’t think about replacing interior doors, but they can literally transform the look of a room or whole house, making it more in tune with their personal style. With many homes containing buildergrade interior and exterior doors, the old adage that the door creates the first impression really rings true for both exterior and interior applications. Interior door replacement is also much more affordable than major renovations. We asked Amy Zimmerman, marketing manager of the new JELD-WEN Design Center, for advice. “Interior door replacement can really help define a room,” Amy says. “You can create a stylish mood simply by adding mirrored closet doors to a bedroom; add natural light to a dark study with luxurious, mahogany-stained French doors; add a special accent to a pantry or create room definition by adding French doors or real wood-stained doors to a library or study; or complement kitchen cabinets by matching the finish – even of the hardware – to new interior doors.” Amy added that consumers can choose from contemporary, traditional, or something in-between.
Another added benefit is privacy and noise reduction. “Traditional interior doors are known as ‘hollow core doors’ and they lack adequate sound insulation and rigidity,” Amy says. “JELD-WEN makes a door called the ProCore, The Quiet Door™ , which offers 50 percent more sound reduction compared to a traditional hollow-core door. You can even have your child’s name custom-carved into one of the doors, or add graphics like a soccer ball, baseball, butterfly, or a custom graphic.” JELD-WEN’s new Design Center makes door selection a painless, step-by-step process that matches doors to your taste and décor, allows custom hardware and other customization in a relaxed, safe, “forkliftfree” design studio. So, take a close look at your doors, then stop by The Design Center and discover what decorating with doors can do to transform your home’s interior. v For more information on The Design Center, call 800-276-0411 or visit the showroom at 9484 Old Bailes Road in Fort Mill or visit www. thedesigncenter.com. They offer complimentary in-store or in-home consultation. Call for showroom hours.

The Ultimate
Design Challenge
Before
By Brad Little & Mark Herrmann
Dean and Lynn Nolan struggled for years trying to decide what to do about their kitchen. They both love to prepare meals together for their large family, but like so many kitchens, theirs was designed for a single user. Anxious to determine what their options were, the Nolan’s spent many weekends touring new homes with more modern layouts. Not only were they attracted to the elegance of natural stone countertops, artistic backsplashes, and rich cabinet finishes, they also found themselves gravitating towards the idea of having a large island instead of the angled peninsula in their existing space. The Nolan’s put off their kitchen renovation for years simply because their home was fairly new. “We just knew there had to be another answer besides ripping it all out and starting from scratch” says Lynn Nolan. After attending one of their kitchen and bath remodeling seminars offered by Case Remodeling, Lynn decided to contact Case to understand what was feasible for their home. “The challenge was coming up with a design to achieve their goals of having an updated look, a more efficient design, and large island while preserving as much of their existing cabinetry as possible,” said Brad Little, president of Case Design/Remodeling. 36
Urban Home Charlotte mar/apr 2011
“We offer a turn-key design-build approach that allows for continuity and a stress-free process from design all the way through construction,” said Brad. One area where this really made a difference with the Nolan’s project was in the design and enhancements of their existing cabinetry. Some cabinets were reused and modified, saving the Nolan’s the time and aggravation of using a separate third-party cabinetry source. The final design resulted in a more efficient layout that allowed for a new island and the addition of over 30-square feet of counter space. “The new island allowed enough room to add a pull-out garbage bin, a wine refrigerator, a prep sink, furniture legs, and cookbook shelving,” said Lynn. To help coordinate with the existing natural maple cabinets, the island’s black painted finish was distressed to reveal natural maple wood beneath. To tie it all together, the existing cook-top cabinet and hood were replaced with pieces that matched the island. An artistic backsplash that features black slate over the sink and cook-top, along with granite countertops added just the right amount of interest.v For more information on Case Remodeling or their remodeling seminars, please call 704-759-3920 or visit www.charlotte.caseremodeling.com.

sional to create project plans or blueprints that are realistic with your budget. This is a classic example of how getting a qualified builder involved in the design process earlier rather than later will prevent disappointments. The collaboration between a builder and design professional during the design process will allow the homeowner to maximize their investment and make sure the plans are realistic given the expected project development schedule. Another consideration is to establish realistic allowances and to shop for fixtures in the beginning of the project. Unrealistic allowances are often the result of two common pitfalls: poor communication between the builder and homeowner or a builder who is trying to gain your business with an unrealistically low estimate. At the very least, the result is a frustrated homeowner. Having realistic allowances may even result in credits at the end of the remodeling project. In the end, I believe that if you have good communication processes from a general contractor and design professional, coupled with a homeowner who is aware of their responsibilities in the selections process, early on in the project, you will be one step closer to a painless remodeling project.v
TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL REMODELING PROJECT • Hire an independent design professional / architect. • Get remodeler involved early in design process. • Establish realistic project allowances. • Establish good communication practices between designer, remodeler and homeowner.

Decorating n Trends The quality of sleep we get each night can affect every aspect of our daily lives, from our health to our productivity on the job. Sleep specialists offer sleep hygiene tips including rules about when to cut off your caffeine, no working in bed, and the necessity of a clean and healthy bed and pillow. What they fail to mention is the importance of having sheets with the right thread count. Erin Dougherty, of Isabella, and Laura Fitch, of Bedside Manor, are the owners of luxury bedding stores in Charlotte. Surrounded in their shops each day by the most beautiful new choices in fine linens, they are experts on selecting the right combination of bedding for the perfect night’s sleep. Lighten Up These experts explain that today’s perfect bedding combination is much lighter than the heavy comforter days of yore. To achieve today’s sleek modern bed, think layers. “The trend in bedding now is definitely simpler lines, but lots of layering to add texture and interest,” says Erin. She recommends quilted coverlets in geometric patterns, blankets or quilts to add color and texture or layering with down comforters at the foot of the bed. Laura agrees that less on the bed is better these days. “We emphasize comfort, not effort,” she says. “More people want coverlets and blankets layered with foot throws. Color and prints are coming back, with new prints that are much more sophisticated, unlike the fussy prints we have been used to in the past.”

BEAUTY SLEEP
The Art Of The Well-Made Bed by Nancy Atkinson
Dreaming of the perfect night’s sleep? You’re not alone. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute shows that 70 million people in the United States have a sleep problem. 42
Urban Home Charlotte mar/apr 2011
The Upside Of Down Duvet? Down comforter? It helps to understand your choices. “A duvet is a cover that goes over a comforter,” says Laura. “The comforter could be made up of either down or synthetic down (otherwise known as a down alternative). Whether you choose to use a duvet with a comforter or simply a coverlet and blanket option is strictly a personal choice.” It seems natural that the most important thing to consider when choosing bedding is how you like to sleep. Laura finds out whether her clients are cold or hot natured. Erin asks whether her clients prefer sleeping with a down comforter or just a coverlet. “We build the bed around how they like to sleep,” says Erin. “If they like the feel of the down comforter, but are allergic to down, we choose the down alternative option. Down comforters are available in different warmth levels to accommodate different climates and preferences.” Laura explains the importance of knowing the type of down in your comforter. “100% white European goose down, at the very least, is a must,” she says. “Baffle box construction is always preferred. These boxes are designed to keep the down from shifting in the comforter, allowing for overall warmth and comfort while sleeping.”
Perfect Sheets There is nothing better than slipping between the perfect sheets at the end of a long day. But shopping for sheets can be confusing. Thread count is only one factor. Surprised? “You do not need a super high thread count to have a quality sheet,” says Erin, who explains that sheet preference is very individual and advises taking other factors into consideration. “You might prefer percale, which has a crisper finish, or sateen with a silkier finish.” “My favorite sheets are only 220 thread count, but are Egyptian cotton,” says Erin. Laura shares her five-step guide to sheet shopping: • Fiber quality: Check the label for 100% Egyptian cotton. • Location: Sheets made in Italy are best. • Yarn size: The finer the yarns the better. A quality sheet is typically between 40 and 100. • Finishing: Look for sheets that are mercerized, a finishing process that is skipped on many discount and department store sheets. • Thread count: This is the number of threads per square inch. Quality sheets start at 180, with the most popular counts being between 220 and 410. “It is important to take all these things into consideration when purchasing sheets,” says Laura. “A sheet may say 500 thread counts, but if it’s made from an inexpensive yarn, it will wear out after a few washings. A knowl-
edgeable sales person should be able to answer any questions a customer has about a sheet.” Pillow Talk No discussion of bedding would be complete without advice on pillows. Choose a pillow that works best for the way you sleep and insist on quality. A good pillow can last for years, saving you money in the long run. Laura asks her clients if they are back, stomach or side sleepers. “A soft down pillow is for a stomach or side sleeper. Medium down is best for a side or back sleeper and a firm down pillow is for a back sleeper,” says Laura, who says budget is also a consideration. “100% goose down is more expensive then synthetic or foam.” “If you are not allergic to down, I would say that down would be the way to go for a fluffier, more resilient pillow,” says Erin. “Your down pillow should be white goose down and constructed with a down proof fabric. For a harder or packed feel, a down and feather blend pillow is a good choice. If you are allergic to down, great choices are available for down alternative pillows.” Handle With Care If you’re going to spend money for quality linens, you’ll want to take exceptional care of them. “Most of the linens we sell can be machine washed, but you definitely want to use a gentle detergent without bleach,” says Erin. “Bleach will

weaken the fibers and break down the fabric. We recommend a company called The Laundress for cleaning products. Their products are biodegradable and allergen free.” Laura’s linens are also mostly machine-washable. “Bedding should be washed once a week using a gentle cleansing product. We recommend Linen Wash by Le Blanc,” she says. “This company specializes in products for fine linens, is never tested on animals and is biodegradable. It is also triple concentrated so only a capful is needed.”v
The Perfect Bed Style: Less is more. Think smooth, crisp and neat. Down: 100% white European goose down. But only if you’re not allergic. Choose your level of warmth. Sheets: 100% mercerized Egyptian cotton made in Italy.

A Family Room for the Whole Family
Beth Keim
Basements often present some interesting design challenges. If you are lucky enough to have one with windows and a backyard entrance do you turn it into a room to send all the kids or do you make it a quiet get-a-way for mom and those girl’s night get-togethers? Dr. Amy Boardman came to see us with those thoughts in mind and while we were keeping her husband Robie and the kids Sophie and Will in our thoughts, when working on the design, we were secretly thinking of something pretty
for us girls. Ashley Goodwyn was my lead designer on this project and did a beautiful job pulling together Amy’s colors of choice, grays with a pop of yellow. She started with a special rug, something a little different, but soft and full of pattern. This is always a good place to start your design project when you have a blank slate.
48
Urban Home Charlotte mar/apr 2011
Things started falling into place with the introduction of the “to-diefor” yellow pleather chairs with silver nail head accents, a large grey velvet-like sectional and loads of unique pillows. But with all that beauty, comfort and functionality were not compromised. Amy worked closely with our amazing carpenter of choice to create a functional (with the metal backsplash) yet practical wall unit complete with large drawers full of dividers, cubbies and open and closed shelving. We created plenty of space for books, crafts, and games. I find that storage units are our most requested ingredient in playrooms and family rooms and we always like to pull in a skilled craftsman to tackle the details here. Don’t skimp with carpentry, as it is often a large piece of the budget, good craftsmanship is well worth the money spent. You can never have enough storage and if you are anything like me, I like to put all the plastic toys behind doors.v Beth Keim is the owner of Lucy and Company, a full-service interior design firm located at 1009 East Boulevard. They can be reached at 704-342-6655 or at www.lucyandcompany.com.
Tips for Built-In Storage • Take the unit to the ceiling and paint the upper crown molding the color of the cabinets not the trim color of the rest of the room. • Adjustable open shelving is great to stagger your books and collectables for a more eclectic mix or unify them for that clean and orderly look. • Try turning all your books horizontal and centered. • For picture frames, keep your photos in similar frame colors. • Try lighter frames against a darker backdrop and yes, you can mix your metals. • Don’t over do the frames. • Try the photo books from iPhoto, Snapfish or Shutterfly. • Create a yearly “favorite pics” photo book and consolidate all the framed photos in your new coffee table book. • Use a little imagination with larger than normal drawer pulls and knobs. • Reconsider hardware such as curtain tie-backs for use as pulls or even re-configured door knobs.

Let Natural Instincts
Tile the Way by Ginger Sprinkle One thing remains unchanged for homeowners – still one of the best investments in remodeling is a kitchen or bath facelift. If you’re inspired by adding nature’s elements to your décor, and tend toward clean, modern and timeless designs, then Terra Verre is a natural for your tile work. This Canadian company separates their new collection by air, earth, fire and water with a very organic sense to all. “The fact that this tile looks more expensive than it is caught my eye,” says Jennifer Creasser Bridges, director of sales and marketing of Tile Collection. “There is nothing else quite like this out there and at this level of quality. Visually, to me, Terra Verre is all about refreshed, relaxed, refined elements.” The entire collection can be used in kitchens and baths for backsplashes, feature walls, and as other accents, as well as for more unique applications such as fireplace mantels due to the tiles’ durability. Let’s take a look at some ideas: • Air: Metalicos, a stainless-steel line, is flawless for streamlining a kitchen space. The modern, man-made feel of the material is picture-perfect for applications ranging from small decorative accents to full, wall-size installations. • Water: Flow Signature Blends, a sophisticated glass line, can be installed anywhere in the bath-

room – vanity walls, tub faces, countertops, and even floors. You can never use too much glass! • Earth: Petrus Blends, one-of-a-kind stone mosaics, feature colors that are soft and natural but chic in shapes and sizes. Why paint a wall when you can make it a structured focal point? • Fire: Cosmopolitan & Cube, these entire lines play with finishes on traditional tile formats. Discover a 3x6, 2x4, 2x2, 2x8, or mini penny rounds in muted colors with matte finishes. While more Charlotteans are gravitating toward a West Coast influence, homeowners may not want to go “too” trendy. This collection works: it’s modern and clean but not excessively contemporary. “These tiles are really for any home – tradition, craftsman, this line can introduce itself into any style,” Jennifer says. She also notes today’s color palette is no longer about beige or Tuscan colors, but a mix of browns and grays; this line incorporates many natural tones playing on grays and warmer tones. “Here you won’t find just gray or golden, but both,” she says.v Contact Tile Collection at 704-541-8453, check out www.tilecollection.com, or visit their showroom at 11200 Carolina Place Parkway in Pineville. Creating Beautiful Children’s Rooms by Nancy Atkinson That Grow Up As They Do Kids grow up fast. So do their tastes. This means that while you love the lacey pink bedroom your daughter has had since an infant, she may be ready for a bedroom to rival that of Taylor Swift or Hannah Montana.

How can parents manage the fickle and often expensive tastes of tweens without a rock star’s income? Interior designers Beth Keim, owner of Lucy and Company, and Wendy Yeakley, owner of Homestyles Interior Design, give us their best advice for creating rooms that allow children to express themselves as they grow. Known for her playful yet sophisticated rooms, Beth likes to set the stage early, starting with the nursery. “I see basically two big stages of decorating: the nursery and the teen room,” says Beth. “If the nursery is done correctly in colors and style (not too theme-y in the beginning) you can wheel the crib out and put a bed in. When children reach the age of 13 it’s time for an overhaul. The twin beds go and all the colors change. At that point, wisely chosen furniture can last well into college.” Wendy agrees that the “tween years” are the perfect time to make a change. “By then they have a good idea of their personal style and color choices. Letting this guide you while redesigning their space can ultimately save you time and money.” Setting Ground Rules To get started, both designers recommend sitting down with your child to hear their ideas for the room, while laying out the budget and the available options. “Remember it’s your house and your money,” says Wendy. “You want to come up with a design concept that will reflect their personal style. But also make it known that you have final say on purchases.” Start the conversation by discussing what the child will do in the room. Do they do homework, hang out, or just sleep? “Many homes have bonus rooms or homework areas in other rooms and if that’s the case we are able to pick furniture that suits the needs of the room,” says Beth. “Taking out a desk will open up a lot of other options.”
PBteen.com
Forward-Thinking Furniture When it comes to furniture, selecting quality pieces is the key to creating rooms that age well. “Think long term,” says Wendy. “Invest in quality, classic-styled furniture that can take them through the teenage years and still be great for their weekends at home as young adults and beyond.” Beth sets clients on the right path by choosing sophisticated furniture for the nursery. “I try to pick a dresser for a changing table,” she explains. “Well-made pieces like the bed and dresser will last as a child’s taste changes and can transition into a teen room and possibly a future guest room, so I advise purchasing quality pieces in a neutral color from the start. It is much easier to re-work paint colors and other soft goods like bedding and windows.” With this approach, the bed may be the only furniture they outgrow in their tweens. “You may need to upgrade the mattress size to queen,” says Wendy. “If the space does not permit, daybeds are a great option, especially for girls’ rooms. Girls love to use the daybed as a sofa with a lot of pillows as a place to hang out with friends when they’re not sleeping. A pull-out trundle with another twin mattress is the perfect way to host a sleep-over guest.”
Find a Style Once the foundation is laid with good furniture, help your junior decorator narrow down their vision for the room makeover. “I love for my teens to express themselves and it is always a good idea to have them flip through magazines and blogs to find a style they love,” says Beth. Beth recommends selecting one key piece first – a rug or piece of fabric – that sets the tone and colors for the room. “Remember to pick paint colors last,” she says. “Just painting a room in a teen’s favorite color is great, but will totally limit the fabrics and accessories you are able to find to match that color.” Wendy also uses fabric, creating upholstered or slipcovered headboards, which can easily be redone with each new look. Paint is Cheap Of course the most budget-friendly way to change a tween’s room is to paint the walls. “A fresh coat of paint can instantly change a room, as will as a new bedspread,” says Beth. Wendy agrees, but reminds parents that colorful paint on the walls requires numerous coats of primer and paint to cover up. She solves this problem by using color in the accessories and pillows or painting just one colorful accent wall. mar/apr 2011 Urban Home Charlotte

Creating Rooms That Grow • Limit trendy pieces to chairs, rugs and accessories. • Use colorful storage boxes and cubes to contain clutter. • Choose a rug or fabric to set the tone and the wall color. 68

• Upholstered or slipcovered headboards are easily changed.
• Keep walls and bedding neutral in a boy’s room; their team loyalty could change.
• Add fun shades, crystal accents or tassels to lampshades in a girl’s room.
• Frame a large corkboard (least visible from the door) where they hang their favorite things.

“Whiteboard paint is a new, great product that can be used on the wall,” says Wendy. “If you paint this within framed sections on the wall the children will be able to redecorate their room every day if they wish.” Beth offers other tips for accessorizing on a budget. “Your furniture, if chosen wisely in a neutral will still work,” she says. “Add some new knobs to those pieces with a new mirror or lamp.”v

style notes
Teen Style ... Somewhere in BeTWEEN Everyone has their own unique style. For some, it may be difficult to articulate. However, it is evident in everything that we do, as well as the way that we live. When we think of style, we often overlook the significance of how it all began. Take my two children, for example. My son started expressing his style at age 2. He was very clear about the choices he Catherine Horgan made in dressing day-to-day. And while, at times, I wanted to put my two cents in, I took a step back to appreciate my son’s ability and ease in making decisions. Today, my pre-teen son’s personal style is reflected in his bedroom. It’s tidy. It’s comfortable. And it has a little edge. He even turned his walk-in closet into a hang out room with seating, special lighting and, of course, lots of technology. My daughter’s personal style developed later than her brother’s. During this past year of discovery, her bedroom has finally become a factor of self expression. She started making her bed everyday and picking things up off the floor (she did not inherit the neat gene, by the way). She took her brother’s cue and turned her walk-in closet into an American Girl Doll fantasy world. Two words describe this awareness in self ... pride and value — essential factors to owning your personal style. For pre-teens, personal style is a direct correlation between how they feel and how they want others to perceive them. There is an enormous amount of pressure put on them from friends and retailers alike. Marketers know they are vulnerable to peer pressure. So, it’s important that we reinforce quality over quantity from wardrobe to room decor items. Twice a year, I have the distinct pleasure of conducting a style discovery workshop for pre-teens through the YMCA. The goal of the workshop is to help pre-teens tap into their creative side, in order to express their style with confidence (rather than following the crowd).

I am always pleasantly surprised at how insightful the groups are. The ability to be open and willing to identify their inner style spirit in a group setting is a gift. A gift I will never tire of receiving. The choices our pre-teens make on a daily basis represent what is meaningful and compelling to them. As adults, we should support, encourage and reinforce the beauty of who they are. It’s a basic fundamental, but one that holds such power. The underlying factor is confidence. And confidence will always be in style! v As a personal stylist in Charlotte, Catherine Horgan works with clients to create signature looks and a fulfilling wardrobe. divine design
From granny suite to cool-kid lounge Nick is about as close as it gets to being the perfect teenager. The 13-year-old is a great student, a baby sitter and role model for his twin 8-year-old brothers — and quite the entrepreneur. His parents, Guy and Natalie, told Nick that if he wanted something, he should “work for it.” So he took the message to heart and has become the go-to guy in his neighborhood for all kinds of odd jobs, including shoveling snow, raking leaves and Candice Olson cutting grass. Because his parents are so proud of Nick, they agreed to give him a grown-up bedroom that will provide some independence — and a little bit of distance from his younger brothers. His grandmother’s old room in the basement was the perfect space for Nick, but the room’s antiques and dusty-rose decor did not say “teenage boy.” So Guy and Natalie called me in and charged me with the task of turning their frilly old basement into a cool-teen lounge. Nick loves gadgets, so I decided to make his space a fun and funky gadget room, full of electronics and music. But first, I needed to get rid of the granny style and get the masculine vibe going. So I emptied the room, insulated the walls for heat and sound, painted the walls a cool blue and then laid down planks of recycled black-leather flooring. I wanted to make the basement into three spaces that all flowed together — a place for lounging, a nook for sleeping and a station for schoolwork. In the lounge, the first area you see when you walk in the room, I created a feature wall of cold, rolled-steel, handmade wallpaper. The colors of the paper — aluminum, gold, silver and charcoal — give the wall a distressed-metal look. This wall became the jumping-off point for other colors and textures in the room, from the bedding to the paint to the furniture. Against this feature wall, I put in a sleeper sofa in a masculine blue, two funky white-leather-and-chrome chairs and a wood-andchrome coffee table. Adjacent to the lounge, I put in a workstation that features a curved, mottled-gray quartz desk. I then flanked the desk with warm wooden cabinetry and added hip, leather-wrapped hardware. On the other side of the 74
Urban Home Charlotte MAR/APR 2011
room, I set up Nick’s bedroom. I painted his old headboard a steely gray-blue, brought in a new duvet with pale blue, tan and brown, and added a heap of throw pillows in metallic colors. I then flanked either side of the bed with cabinetry that has open, mirror-backed shelving above and closed storage below. For a personalized touch, I added customized artwork to the bedroom — photos of grass, snow and leaves — to remind Nick of his entrepreneurial endeavors. Lastly, I focused on the fun stuff — gadgets for Nick. I put in a new computer and mixing station in the work area, a wall-mounted flatscreen television in the lounge and a cool light fixture in the bedroom. The fixture is comprised of 16 light bulbs on long wires that hang from a box above his bed. After some final accents and accessories — an area rug, books, a bubblegum machine and a few other widgets and thingamabobs — Nick’s space was complete. By using accents, funky furnishings and a handful of customized gadgets, I turned a granny space into a basement retreat that is as unique as the teen who’s moving in. Now that’s divine! v Interior decorator Candice Olson is host of HGTV’s “Divine Design.” For more ideas, information and show times, visit www.HGTV.com or www.divinedesign.tv.
