Prepare to

Push! BY KIM VOPNI

In the fitness industry there are several principles of training. One of them is the principle of specificity. Essentially it means that you should train your body for the event you are preparing for. If you want to run a marathon your training should include running and strength and stretch activities for the muscles involved in running. If you want to be a better basketball player, you should practice a lot of drills, build strength and endurance in the muscles that are used for agility and dribbling and then play a lot of basketball. Birth is no different – well it is a bit different since you can’t really practice giving birth over and over but you can prepare your body for the big day. If you want to birth well, then you should learn how the body moves to facilitate birth and then train your body for endurance, strength and flexibility in those movements. Optimizing your upcoming birth means learning and then practicing various labour movements and birth positions. I recommend walking, squatting and pelvic rocking on a birth ball in preparation for early labour. These can all be practiced safely during

pregnancy. When it comes time to push I like the all 4’s positions and side lying positions best. Exercises such as hovering, the clam and side lying bent knee lift prepare you for these birth positions and are all safe to do during pregnancy. They really build up the strength and endurance in your legs, core and glutes for the big day. Flexibility and suppleness training should also be an essential part of your preparation. Stretching the glute muscles and hip flexor muscles should be done daily as well as hamstring and calf stretches. Releasing tension in the pelvic floor is essential and can be done with a small, soft ball such as a Miracle Method Ball or a Franklin Method Ball. Placing the ball between the sitz bone and the anus and then allowing it to melt into your posterior pelvic floor muscles will create space and openness in your pelvis for your baby and help you learn to yield against discomfort. Another preparation tool is visualization athletes often use imagery and visualization as they prepare for their event. Same goes for birth. Seeing in your mind the birth you want, visualizing space and a tension-free

birth canal for your baby will allow your mind to connect with ways that will optimize the movement of your baby into and out of your pelvis. Recovery is an aspect of training that is often overlooked but needs your full attention. It takes nine months of changes to grow your baby. It then takes many hours to get your baby out. Your body needs to rest, recover and heal and then progress gradually back to exercise. Many of the exercises you use to prepare will also be used to recover. The clam and bent knee lift will be some of the first followed by walking, hovering and then squatting. The key is to rest in the early days and gradually progress to upright positions and then upright moving activities. Take your time – even though birth is a marathon, it is not a race.

UPPABABY MESA MAKING LIFE EASIER | $429.99

presented by

At 8.6 lbs, this is the lightest premium seat in its class! Safe, but also stylish, Mico AP Comes in a selection of bold colours, and is outfitted with a beautiful canopy to shield little eyes from the sun.

We cannot rave enough about the Uppababy MESA—especially it’s incredibly easy, 10-second installation! LATCH connectors, red-to-green tightness and level indicators, no-rethread harness, buckle storage pockets, and a 4-position adjustable foot, among other features, make set-up incredibly fast and accurate! It weighs less than 10 lbs, is compatible with VISTA and CRUZ strollers, and is an absolute dream to pop in and out of stroller and base alike. As far as safety goes, MESA’s headrest is reinforced with EPP foam, and the integrated design keeps baby’s head stationary during a collision, resulting in up to 4x better test scores than other premium infant seats. To top it off, it’s made with soft, breathable, easily removable, washable material, and comes with an SPF 50 hideaway canopy.

PEG PEREGO PRIMO VIAGGIO 4-35 ITALIAN-CRAFTED STYLE $329.97-$349.97

Here’s another rear-facing seat for infants 4-35 lbs, and up to 32”. Weighing only 9.5 lbs, it’s easy to transport between car and (Peg Perego) stroller, for a complete travel system. UAS and the “Right Tight” system make installation easy. Adjustments are a piece of cake as well, with a simple recline, and Tri-Zone Level Indicator to find the perfect angle for your child as they grow. There are straps to hold the harness out of the way when necessary, and SIP that adjusts between 6 positions, without rethreading, even with baby in the seat. A dual cushion system provides appropriate support, depending on your child’s size. A steel-plated back minimizes flexing and forward movement, and the energy-absorbing EPS foam, anti-rebound bar, and top tether hook all add excellent protection in case of a collision.

The infant insert is a nice addition, ensuring that baby is secure and comfy as can be. It uses the LATCH system, is easy to adjust, and has a leveling to help you get the recline angle set up correctly. Add to its description all of the safety features included with the Primo Viaggio 4-35, and you’re sitting pretty.

The UAS installation takes mere seconds, and 3 seats fit side-by-side. The height it gives children while rear-facing usually allows them to see out the window, and the seat itself is very plush. It is made with GREENGUARD Select Certified fabric that effectively repels moisture, stains, and bacteria! it has a steel and magnesium sub-structure, comes with an anti-rebound bar, and is reinforced with Rapid Energy Absorbing Crumple Technology and 3 layers of energy-absorbing foam for optimal SIP. HOW MUCH SLEEP

Do Babies Need? BY HEATHER N. PLANTE

I was recently asked, “What is the most common issue you see in babies who have sleep problems?” Of course, there are many issues and struggles facing sleepless families but the short answer is routine and consistency. Developing a calm and relaxing bedtime routine is great for introducing positive associations with sleep. First, you will want to start with following your angel’s sleepy cues and then take her to her bedroom. (You may need to follow the clock if she is hiding sleepy cues.) Cues can be simple: like rubbing her eyes or yawning. Other cues may be subtle: like repetitive/sporadic movements, red around the eyes, clumsiness, a blank stare, lack of interest in a previous favorite activity, or even hyperactivity. The sleepy cues are an indication that melatonin is present in the body and is preparing her little body for sleep. Babies will have the most restorative sleep when we follow their body’s natural rhythm. Next, you will want to have a predictable routine that will further her positive associations with sleep. Go to your baby’s room, turn on a soft lamp, close the blinds, put on her pajamas, and change her diaper.

This prepares your angel for transitioning from active play to sleep and the darkness helps with the production of melatonin. The activities that you do during the routine may include: reading books, singing songs, baby yoga, baby massage after a bath, and definitely cuddles. Her bedtime feeding should occur during this routine as well and be early in the routine so it is NOT the last activity to happen before sleep. The length of the routine should be between 20-30 minutes. Finally, you will always want your baby going into bed drowsy-but-awake. Learning to sleep is instinctive but learning how to fall asleep independently is a learned skill. Drowsy-but-awake helps to teach her that she can fall asleep on her own and she can recognize the place that she wakes in is the same as the place that she fell asleep in. You will then need to encourage her to fall asleep WITHOUT you doing ANYTHING FOR HER to get her there. Anything that you have to do for her, or have to be present for, so that she can sleep is known as a sleep ‘crutch’. Your little angel believes that your ‘crutches’ are rewards for waking in the night and that she NEEDS you to do them in order for her to be able to get back to sleep in the night.

18 • www.modernmama.com | EDMONTON | A RESOURCE GUIDE | 2015/2016 Edition

photo: Teagan Photography

A consistent method for soothing her and getting her to fall asleep independently is a MUST. This helps her to learn that you will be there to reassure her and that she can do it on her own. Your consistent response to all night wake-ups is of utmost importance in teaching your little angel that she can do it independently. If you respond with a different reaction to every night wake-up, then you will teach her intermittent reinforcement; which will strongly encourage the wake-up behavior to continue and the night wake-ups will become earlier

and more frequent! Respond with the same method of soothing and reassurance that you are using at bedtime and she will learn predictability. All methods do work – you need to find the method that is the best fit for your comfort level, her temperament, and your parenting style. When you are comfortable with your chosen method, you will be consistent. Predictability and consistency will give her security.

Heather N. Plante is a Certified Maternity & Child Sleep Consultant. She lives in Stony Plain with her husband and 3 wonderful daughters. She became passionate about helping sleepless families 2 years ago and has enjoyed changing lives, 1 baby at a time, since then.

Nest Prep: Getting Ready to Bring Home Baby

Baby’s Room Do you want baby close to your bedroom for convenience or far away for a sound barrier? If you have a choice, you’ll want to put some thought to this. Decorating is the fun part – but don’t go overboard! Start with the basics (crib, changing table, dresser, rocking chair) and then add in the items you love over time. And don’t forget the most important part: safety. You might want to think about replacing the baby’s bedroom door with a wooden screen door. It’ll keep pets and guests out, but keep you seeing and hearing the baby.

Gear Never mind the fancy stuff, a good old fashioned rocking chair will be relaxing for you and create a soothing motion for your baby at feeding time. Look for one that will become a useful and memorable piece of furniture in your home for years to come. And because you can’t be in all places at all times, be sure to purchase a dependable baby monitor. This is a huge comfort, especially during those first days at home with baby.

Regardless of if you’re breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, you’re going to need some equipment. If you’re bottle-feeding, you’ll need bottles and formulas. If you’re breastfeeding, you’ll want a breast pump and bottles so others can lend a hand in the feeding department. Don’t forget the nipple cream and phone number of a local breastfeeding support group. If you don’t already own a digital camera, now would be a good time to buy one. Simple, durable and dependable trumps fancy and hard to operate. Once baby is hear, you’ll be overwhelmed by the photo ops…starting a few minutes after birth! Ask around and get some recommended reading or websites for baby care. Whether it’s a sniffle or rash, these resources are incredibly valuable!

Baby Proofing Remember: it doesn’t need to be done all at once. A newborn requires a different kind of baby proofing compared to a mobile crawler! Re-evaluate as your baby hits each new stage, but be sure to be baby-proofed before baby makes it through the door.

Good Eats

Digits

It’s easy to forget to feed yourself when you find yourself tending to your baby’s unknown eating schedule. Yes, there’s always take-out, but that takes its toll on your wallet and your health. If you start in the time leading up to baby’s arrival, you can fill your freezer with easy meals like casseroles, sauces and stews.

Make a list of all of your important phone numbers. Program them into your mobile, but also post them near your home phone. Don’t forget the pediatrician, your family doctor, poison control, and any other support numbers.

Never “ mind the fancy stuff, a good old fashioned rocking chair will be relaxing for you...” www.modernmama.com | EDMONTON | A RESOURCE GUIDE | 2015/2016 Edition • 21
