Shine On! Dear UP Parents, Have you ever stopped to evaluate if you have achieved your dreams? I mean, each day we wake up and we give numerous pep talks to our kids about finishing school with honors, setting goals, taking responsibility and being anything they want to be… yet, what about us? Today, I want you to know that it’s okay to have dreams too in the midst of serving as that guiding light for your children. You have to remember, that your life does not stop just because you have children and your dreams are valid. So maybe you can’t spend 40 hours a week investing in your idea, but you can definitely work them in or squeeze them in day by day until you find time to make your dream a reality. I recently read over this hilarious instagram photo that highlighted boldly, “ You don’t scare me, I’ve got kids!” (Sooo true!) When you become a parent, you learn very quickly that you have to step up, juggle many responsibilities and roles, and sometimes you may not get it all done, but that doesn’t mean that you erase it off your “To Do List”, you keep striving, fighting, and getting one step closer to your dreams. I challenge you- NEVER give up on your goals. It will make you feel accomplished, your kids will watch in awe and pick up some of those hardworking traits of resiliency, and you can look back with satisfaction that you have completed a part of your purpose on earth.

She serves as mentor for Honey Shine, Inc. and the Women of Tomorrow Scholarship program. She also participates in numerous charitable causes in the Caribbean community in addition to The Boys and Girls Club and Overtown Youth Center and The American Heart Association. Q&A Who was Neki pre-baby? “When I found out I was pregnant, I was elated! We had made the decision to have a baby and 6 weeks later I was blessed! It also shifted that baby to my number 1 priority in my life. It was not just about me anymore!” What’s you parenting style? www.UrbanParentingMagazine.com

“I believe you brought them into this world and you have to spend time with them. Ages 0- 5 are so valuable with the emotional and mental development of children, so your child should come first.” What were some “mommy life” surprises? “I took 3 months off, but when I went back to work, the shock of childcare and how much it costs hit me, and finding good childcare. My mom was ill and sick with cancer at the time so it was overwhelming dealing with a dying mother and trying to be a good first mom. At the time my mom could not help and being a stay at home mom was not an option [because I love what I do]… I had to find good childcare, be there for my mom, and balance it all.” How do you handle the seesaw of “mommy stress”? “I was raised by my grandparents, they were so amazing. At the times when I become overwhelmed, I always think of them and what they wanted for me. They were great role models and and I want to be one too.” What’s a typical day like in your shoes? “On work days, I’m up by 3 AM, in to work at 4 AM and then off the air at 10:30 AM. Then when I leave here (work), I have homework, cleaning, dinner, etc… On my off days, I’m up at 5 AM to hit the gym, I would tell any mom to not skimp on yourself. You have to take care of your health especially when you want to set a good example for your kids.”

How do you unwind or relax- what’s your guilty pleasures? “I watch Shameless, Scandal, Smash and even Kelly and Michael when I get a chance.”
Share some of your “ah-ha” moments or advice to mom’s out there? “Children learn more by what they see than what we say. So I watch my language, I also try to make better food choices so she would also. I believe if you don’t take care of your children it will haunt you the rest of your life.” Any tips to young ladies who watch you in awe? “ Focus on your passion and finding out what you were meant to do in life, then pursue it voraciously! Have a plan before you decide to become a parent. Build your career and get yourself on solid financial footing. Anyone who loves you will support your becoming an happy independent adult. Then you can find a mate who compliments you and will help parent your children. It is also okay to decide that you don’t want to have children. Make it your choice, but you can’t be sure about it until you have lived a little.” What’s next? “Getting older is an honor; you have to take responsibility for your life. I enjoy being a parent- I had a child at age 35 and I’m going to be 42 this year. Life is filled with so many possibilities if you just focus and explore them. It’s not sacrifice if it is pursuit of what you really want. It’s called “Paying your dues.”

When it comes to styling an outfit for a formal affair, look to some of your favorite Hollywood celebs for instant inspiration. Face it! They know how to work it; they showcase their best features, and they remain completely classy- from their hair (extensions), all the way down to their shoes. Read on to learn how you can achieve a red carpet ready look for your next special occasion. Shimmer and Shine If you watch the Oscars, you are bound to see lots of shimmer and shine coming from the ladies and sometimes even the gents! Take some style cues from Halle Berry, Kim Kardashian, J-Lo, Jessica Alba, and even Jamie Fox who have all rocked the shimmer and shine on their gowns and tuxes. Consider shopping for a dress that has subtle sequin embellishments scattered and sewn into the hemline of the gown or shiny beadwork that is strategically placed around the bust.

It is much more cost effective to shop online because there is no overhead that comes with shopping in a store, plus you can even score extra discounts or even free shipping if the site is boasting a sale or promotion! Go Long Yes, short dresses are totally flirty, fun, and youthful but they can sometimes lack sophistication and elegance.

You can save a bundle shopping their sale racks and even get some deals and steals online during a semi-annual sale, where most gowns are priced at $100 or less! Get a Glow Many celebs spend a week prior to the red carpet prepping their skin. While we all may not be able to afford a personal masseuse or high end facials; you can do something simple to make a huge impact on your appearance. Whip up your own coconut body scrub. All you need is coconut oil and sugar. Mix one part oil to two parts sugar and gently massage all over your skin, for about five minutes. Rinse off in warm water, and your skin will look as if you spent all day at a salon! Everyone deserves to look red carpet ready, regardless of their budget. Follow some of the tips and tricks given above and you will be in for a night (and a look) you’ll always remember!

It is that time of year again, where you can’t turn on the television without seeing some sappy Hallmark commercial or an ad for overpriced flower bouquets. Every time I see these Mother’s Day advertisements I can’t help but think how completely off the mark they are. Sure roses and carnations are nice, but everyone knows that as soon as your kids learn how to fold a piece a paper they will be making you a tissue Daisy with a round picture of their cute little selves in the center stuck into a terracotta pot that you will display for years proudly on your desk. Who needs real flowers when I can have that? Or how about those ice cream cakes they show in the shape of a lady bug or purse? Cake and Ice cream IS a good combination, I’ll give you that. But, who wants to eat a bug and I certainly do not need another reminder that I will never ever be able to use a fashionable handbag without it being used as a hair bow, toy car, Sippy cup, tissue holder again. Oh Dooney and Burke sitting on the top shelf of my closet, how I do miss you! SIGH

They try to convince husbands to buy wives expensive necklaces with linking hearts that symbolize the mother- child connection. A very sweet gesture which I am sure some newbie fathers may fall for. First time moms will ohh and ahh over the generous gift too… until the very first time their precious baby bundle yanks on it. A juicer, lavender scented candles, gardening gloves, even a bottle of Coco Chanel…I have gotten them all over the years. They are always accompanied by the sweetest handmade cards, poems and once even an original song with a guitar accompaniment. They were all very nice gifts and were very much appreciated. But what my children, husband and most certainly all those advertisers and marketers out there don’t really understand is that we moms don’t need expensive tokens of affection.
Nope there is a gift that we really want that does not even cost a cent. Something that you give dear old mom that she truly will treasure. Are you ready for it? Get out your pens and paper because you are going to want to write this down. What Mom REALLY wants is‌ to be able to go to the bathroom ALONE! Yup you read correctly. Mom just wants 5 minutes in the Loo without having to answer inquiring young minds questions as they stand outside the locked door. She wants to be Queen of her Throne without hubby standing in their plucking his nose hairs. She wants to do her business without the DOG watching her! That is what mom really wants. And if you are feeling really generous, you can allow mom to shower and SHAVE both legs without the house burning down or World War III breaking out among the kids while she is in there. Now that is a Mother’s Day Commercial that would really make me tear up!

ellness—it’s essential to living a full and productive life. We may have different ideas about what wellness means, but it involves a set of skills and strategies that prevent the onset or shorten the duration of illness and promote recovery and well-being. It’s about keeping healthy as well as getting healthy.

athways to Wellness— this year’s theme of May is Mental Health Month—calls attention to strategies and approaches that help all Americans achieve wellness and good mental and overall health.
W
ellness is more than an absence of disease. It involves complete general, mental and social well-being. And mental health is an essential component of overall health and well-being. The fact is our overall well-being is tied to the balance that exists between our emotional, physical, spiritual and mental health.
W
hatever our situation, we are all at risk of stress given the demands of daily life and the challenges it brings—at home, at work and in life. Steps that build and maintain well-being and help us all achieve wellness involve a balanced diet, regular exercise, enough sleep, a sense of self-worth, development of coping skills that promote resiliency, emotional awareness, and connections to family, friends and the community.
T
hese steps should be complemented by taking stock of one’s well-being through regular mental health checkups. Just as we check our blood pressure and get cancer screenings, it’s a good idea to take periodic reading of our emotional well-being. One recent study said everyone should get their mental health checked as often as they get a physical, and many doctors routinely screen for mental health, which typically include a series of questions about lifestyle, eating and drinking habits and mental wellness. But a checkup doesn’t necessarily require a special trip to the doctor. There are also online screening tools you can use. While conditions like depression are common—roughly 1 in 5 Americans have a mental health condition—they are extremely treatable.

ully embracing the concept of wellness not only improves health in the mind, body and spirit, but also maximizes one’s potential to lead a full and productive life. Using strategies that promote resiliency and strengthen mental health and prevent mental health and substance use conditions lead to improved general health and a healthier society: greater academic achievement by our children, a more productive economy, and families that stay together.

Some people believe that living ecologically means spending lots of money on expensive organic products. Whilst there are lots of fashionable and fancy bio-products, recipes and recycling methods out there, generally speaking “green living” should save us money. After

k, so we all have a mom. Biologically, we just cannot escape the fact! But apart from the mother who gave birth to us, we also have another mommy. She’s called Mother Earth.
Even if we don’t cultivate land or hunt for a living, directly or indirectly the Earth nurtures us with the air we breathe, the food we eat, the water we drink and the energy we use. Mother’s Day is therefore a great opportunity to honor Mother Earth by “going green”. Save the planet = save money

Although recycling paper is important, reducing paper use is better. Watch out for foods covered in excessive packaging. You know the ones where you get a plastic container that’s also wrapped in a pretty cardboard shell? You’re also paying for that packaging, so how
much nutritional value is in the food itself? You don’t need to go mad, just look for other options with less wrapping when you can. What about tissue paper, kitchen towels and paper napkins? Can you live without one of them? How
about reading an online newspaper, or an e-book? We live in a digital age and taking advantage of that can save a few trees here and there. Transport Taking public transport or carpooling is not always an option for everybody, but we can look for small opportunities to minimize pollution where we can. Walk as much as possible. Your kids will love it, and you’ll see so much more of your surroundings when you’re just strolling along. Considering buying car? Check out if you’re eligible for a government scheme that will subsidize the purchase of a new car with emissionefficient filters. LED lighting
Changing to LED lighting at home can reduce your electricity bill drastically. Simply replacing lights one by one helps. At 24 hours per day of continuous use, LED fixtures can deliver light for six years. Did you know that homes where LED lights are used, can save between 20-40% on their electricity bills? Power strips that cut appliance energy off completely, stop them from sucking “vampire power” when not in active use. Homes that use power strips experience a staggering 30% reduction in electricity bills. And you can also do it the old fashioned way: just unplug the TV when you go to bed. Toys Even if they seem more expensive,

Secondly, toys made of organic or biodegradable materials are nontoxic, so they are great for babies. And buying toys that save the planet for our children’s future, is also not a bad idea. Donate One person’s old junk is another one’s treasure. Consider donating furniture, clothes, shoes, kitchenware or toys to a shelter, church or a charity shop. Make sure the things you are giving, are in good working order and presentable. Take your kids with you if you donate toys, to help them understand the importance of generosity. And finally… By far the best way to save money and protect our Mother Earth this Mother’s Day, is to need less. Explain to kids the harmful effects of consumerism and why it’s not good to constantly want new things. Make them aware of how our environment benefits when we don’t just throw old stuff away. But, with these recipes, in just a short time you & your family can enjoy a nutritious meal & dessert! Tacos & Dessert Nachos!! For the Tacos... 1 lb. Ground Turkey Breast 3 Tbsp finely chopped onion 1 tsp minced garlic 1 8oz. can of Corn (drained) 1 can of Black Beans (drained) 1 can of chopped tomatoes with chiles 8-12 Flour Tortillas Sour cream (optional) Green onion (optional)
Cook the ground turkey in a sautĂŠ pan about 75% through, on a medium to high Heat. Make sure to keep your meat moving, as you are not using any added oils. Add your chopped onions, garlic, corn & black beans. Continue cookie until onions become translucent & the ground turkey is completely cooked. Add tomatoes and bring to a low heat for 3-5 minutes.

Fill your flour tortillas & top with a dollop of sour cream & a sprinkle of chopped green onions.
for tHe DeSSert naCHoS... 1/4 tbsp cinnamon 1 Tbsp sugar 1/4 cup fresh strawberries (chopped) 1/4 cup melted butter 6oz. melted chocolate 4 flour tortillas Whipped cream (optional) Preheat your oven to 350 degree. Combine the cinnamon & sugar in a small bowl. Cut strawberries into small pieces & set aside. Cut each tortilla into 8 small triangles. Scatter the tortilla pieces onto a parchment lined sheet tray. Lightly brush on the melted butter & sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar mixture. Bake for 7-10 minutes or until golden brown.
Stirring each time, until completely melted. Arrange chips as desired on a plate & sprinkle evenly with the fresh strawberries. Drizzle with your chocolate & add as much or as little whipped cream as you’d like! Photo credit: www.ourbestbites.com
Allow chips to cool completely. Melt chocolate in a microwave safe bowl in 15 second intervals.
