THE HERALD THEATRE 50 MAYORAL DR AUCKLAND NEW ZEALAND 14 TO 16 JUNE 2012

3 WRITERS 3 PLAYS 3 NIGHTS This initiative was started to encourage working with writers in our extended creative network. We hoped to provide untapped acting talent some exposure whilst putting a challenge to the writers involved to address a single theme, writing about it and presenting that to an audience in a 30 - 40 minute play. Welcome to the 3UP. This year’s theme:

THE WRITERS

1 UP KALI YUGA CHETAN PATEL Imagine the World descended into chaos... left to rule by thieves and assassins... Hindu scriptures tell of the world going through a cycle of various eras – ‘Yugas’. The darkest and most dangerous one of all is Kali Yuga. An era ruled by vice... and a precursor to the end of the world. Many debate whether we are in the midst of Kali Yuga, or whether the worst is yet to come... Kali Yuga is Chetan’s first foray into writing, producing and directing his own production - so obviously he wants to make a good impression. What better way to start than with the fun of pirates and the awesomeness of ninjas. While it would be nice to know a bit more about Chetan, he tends not to talk about himself much. In fact he hardly talks at all... he prefers to let his writing to do the talking. We do know that he attributes / blames his overactive imagination on watching too much TV and being the only child for over 10 years. He tends to wax philosophical sometimes- but then he also thinks most vegetables are evil, so who knows... And he likes using ellipses... a lot... www.greyview.net

2 UP GOODBYE MY FELENI D F MAMEA Screenwriter and self-professed ‘reluctant filmmaker’, David Mamea has worked on film, television and radio projects in genres ranging from sci-fi to soap, comedy to horror, and documentary to drama. He cites the high school years he spent in Samoa as a defining creative influence: “No television. No junk food. Just school and a hundred-plus movies a year at the local sweatbox cinemas. Bring back Jan-Michael Vincent!” Originally from Wellington, he now lives in Waitakere with his family and a growing menagerie of animals. He keeps a blog of his writing adventures (and excuses for not writing) at: www.dfmamea.com.

THE WRITERS

3UP BLACK AND GOLD ERIC SMITH Eric Smith - award winning film director, actor, dancer and choreographer. Google it, you won’t find my name in there anywhere! I have had a lifelong fascination with the unexplained, the supernatural, the other worldly. If it was good enough for Einstein, Shakespeare and Jesus then I’m in good company. How much of that has to do with my upbringing? I can’t really say but I do know that I still love it! As the world ponders the importance of pumping fat and bacteria into its fake plastic face, inserting augmented dead material into parts of its anatomy looking to fill some elusive void, I’ve written a play based on this years theme, 2012: the end of the world. I hope you like it and if you don’t, that’s cool too, either way I (and my imaginary friends) thank you for at least helping validate: Eric Smith - writer... and your friend. Too much? okay. www.greyview.net
