ART OR SOUND
The music can start when an object thanks to someone or something, starts to emit sound, delight to hear, notes that produce in the human different sensations, fulfilling your life, but this objects are art pieces or sound objects, Which is the relation that exist between art and sound, through different musical’s instruments? Under this question Prada Foundation, will open the exhibition “Art or Sound”. In the exhibition will be reinterpreted the musical’s objects as sculptures and as visual entity, will evaluate how the role of the artist and musician are sometimes blurred, avoiding the categories. It will begin in the 17th century, with instruments made of unusual materials, the 18th century will welcome to lit and automata like the watchmaker Pierre Jaquet-Droz. Moving forward the 19th century, will present automatic musical instruments and mechanical device, exploring light and color, will be included the futuristic artist Luigi Russolo with “Intonarumori” (1913) and some objects of Giacomo Balla. The 20th century, comprises instruments and works by compositors like Alvin Lucier and John Cage, the 60s sound boxes by Robert Morris and Nam June Paik, and kinetic sculptures by Takis and Stephan Von Huene and sound installations like “Oracle” by Robert Rauschenberg (1962 – 1965) and “Handphone Table” by Laurie Anderson (1978). Also you will find pianos created by Arman, Richard Artschawager and Joseph Beuys and hybrid instruments like guitars and violins by Ken Butler and the banjos by William T. Wiley. Besides a book to accompany the exhibition, with essays and other texts written by a long list of musicologists, visual artists, musicians, composers and art historians as Jo Applin, Andrea Lissoni, Deirdre Loughridge, Simone Menegoi, Jonathan Sterne y Rob Young between others.
