MESSAGE FROM THE COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR As my term as USk Communication Director comes to an end, it has been my sincere pleasure to serve for the past four years. During that time, I was challenged to build a team and to create an integrated communications strategy. The Communications team launched the USk Youtube channel, and integrated our website, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook platforms. We produced 38 promotional videos, translated the Regional Chapter Guidelines into 17 languages, created 26 live stream videos, produced the Happy Anniversary video (with the help of 496 volunteers worldwide) and relaunched Drawing Attention as a new online zine now with almost 16k readers. Thank you sincerely to the hundreds of volunteers who contributed. If you are ever passing through my part of Canada, I hope you will come sketching with Urban Sketchers Waterloo Region. ketching is a great way to preserve memories of days on the trail, a way to make deeper connections to the encounters of the path, and to strengthen memories of the adventure. Portuguese Urban Sketcher Pedro Cabral loves walking, and hikes trails all around the world. Cabral was a natural choice when Sketch Tour Portugal elected to focus one of their events on hiking Portuguese trails. “I’ve walked all around the world and I think Portuguese trails are excellent,“ says Cabral. “Walking and sketching are always together.” One interesting facet of the Tour is that two strangers are paired up to travel and sketch together for a week, bringing their own unique vision to sketching the wonders of Portugal. Urban Sketcher and hiking enthusiast Linda Toolsema of the Netherlands joined Cabral, driving from one section of trail to another, braving rough roads and rain and mud to explore small towns, waterways, and nature that a hiker might encounter from

the trail. At times the two Urban Sketchers had to step outside of their comfort zone to do so. Toolsema and Cabral were asked to create six sketches each day. They often found that several small sketches began to evolve into a single composition. Their approach mimics that of a naturalist’s field guide in that their composite sketches sometimes include field notes of details and observations. “We did not actually draw the trail itself, the path, but the locations adjacent: the little towns, the river,” Toolsema explains. Cabral adds that the most interesting theme emerging from the experience was that of “passage.“ Both sketchers described the camaraderie they experienced as they collaborated on the sketching plan of each day so that they could avoid overlapping one another. And while bringing two strangers together to work closely might seem challenging, sketchers are generally focused on the act of drawing. isn’t so awkward because silence is what we “do” when we sketch. And each brings their own unique approach to sketching. “I almost always begin my sketches by drawing horizontal lines on the page,” Cabral shares with me. “A lot of my sketches wind up with a strong horizontal line. I always use it for structuring my sketch.” Establishing the limits and motif
and proportion, and using a lot of measurements and comparisons guides him as he works. By contrast, Toolsema began the tour by delivering a workshop in Lisbon which focused on basic shapes and layering to build up more complex views. Regardless of their starting points, both have a preference for sketching with a pen. Cabral, who has published a small
book with sketches of Portuguese trails, is excited about this opportunity to further showcase them. “Hiking is the activity I love and there are wonderful trails. I like to talk about them. And (the Tour) is an opportunity to do that with a much larger audience.”

Power and passion in Prague FAMOUS FOR ITS MEDIEVAL ARCHITECTURE AND BRIDGES OVER THE VLTAVA RIVER, ITS COBBLED LANES AND GOLD TIPPED CHURCH SPIRES, PRAGUE OFFERS STELLAR OPPORTUNITIES FOR SKETCHERS – INCLUDING IN LESS LIKELY CORNERS. BY SUSAN ROGERS

t’s no surprise that the USK chapter in Prague has grown from 75 members to 420 members in less than a year. They often host two events a week, allowing avid sketchers lots of choice in venues. Prague was founded in the 7th century. For those who have yet to visit, the movie Amadeus will give you a taste of this magical city. Chapter Admin, Rajesh Dhawan describes the experience of sketching in Prague as being akin to walking through history. Recently a group of six Prague USK members had the opportunity to further stretch their sketching muscles at a rehearsal of the Czech national ballet company. Raj describes his initial impressions during the warm up: “These performers began to move in this grand space in a manner unlike anything we had experienced before as sketchers.” Sitting on the floor, the sketchers felt the explosive energy from the dancers. Alua Abdramanova says, “It was a really tough challenge to catch the movement of these dancers. I must have ruined half of my sketchbook trying to figure out this problem. After a few hours, I finally started to feel satisfied. After this non-stop drawing sprint, I realized that now I can sketch anything without fear.” Amélie de Trogoff worked in watercolour which she describes as the medium of spontaneity: “I made lots of bad works but all the feeling of that day is still imprinted in my mind and I know my hands remember those quick poses.” The group agreed that while it was an ordinary work day for the dancers, it was far from a normal sketching experience. The chapter’s founder, Tom Zahradka sums up the day: “It was incredible to see first-hand how hard these ballet performers work. Spending time with them inspired me to commit myself to my illustration art career with even more dedication.”

F YOU’D HAVE TOLD ME TEN YEARS AGO THAT I WOULD BE SKETCHING … A TEACHER … I WOULD HAVE LAUGHED AT YOU!” – LUDIVINE
hen you speak to Ludivine Alligier, an administrator for USK Lyon, it’s clear that it is the people at the heart of urban sketching which she values the most. It was through meeting her friend, Marie Stricher, that Ludivine was introduced to urban sketching and the world of drawing.
Lyon is a historical city with many different districts and vantage points, but it’s the old district which is Ludivine’s favourite. She recommends visitors sketch in front of Église Saint-Georges. It’s not the most famous church in Lyon, “but there are less tourists, so you are more alone to sketch if you’re a beginner.”
“Marie was a teacher at the time. I wasn’t. I was a computer science engineer. She asked me to go to Lisbon to help her run a workshop and that was the beginning for me to start to get to know people and to start something that’s very important in my life now. If you’d have told me ten years ago that I would be sketching … a teacher … I would have laughed at you!” Ludivine began USK Lyon in 2009 and the group which started with 5 people has grown to over 180, with at least 40 sketchers coming to each meet-up. Beginning as a group for her students, once Ludivine opened it up she soon discovered there were lots of people in Lyon who wanted to sketch.
Ludivine’s passion for urban sketching and its community is clear and she wants everyone to get involved: “For the people that hesitate to find a meeting – just go! It’s the best way to meet people,” and if there isn’t a meeting to go to she recommends just starting one yourself. “I hesitated for a long time, but the moment I started planning meetings everything opened up and I met many people. It never stops growing, meeting people, finding new things, new ways of drawing, new places, new everything – don’t hesitate!”

T
hey found themselves, pens and brushes in hand, wandering the halls of an old hospital in Tuscany, abandoned since the late 70’s. Workshop leader Majid Modir was pointing out how light was entering the space and the visually interesting effect of perspective. “Majid would focus on those technical things and I would focus on telling a story,” laughs guest artist and Urban Sketcher Anders Mohlin. The Swedish artist laughs a lot as we chat about the USk workshop, Discovering Abandoned Places in Tuscany. He is clearly impressed by the beauty of rolling hills that envelope the surrounding landscape and fascinated by the deserted structures which workshop participants were exploring. Anders asks the sketchers to consider what stories the mood of a place conveys. “I try to get them to think about what’s happening behind those
walls, to create pictures with that in mind.” Talk to Anders for any length of time and with a chuckle he’ll tell you the importance of storytelling to his drawings. Traveling through China as a youth, he quickly understood it was no handicap to be saddled by what he admits was “poor English and no Chinese. I had to communicate and figured out I could draw pictures to do that,” he says with a smile. “You can speak to anyone with a doodle.” Led by Majid Modir and guest artists, Discovering Abandoned Places in Tuscany is a five day workshop of drawing and painting, in which participants learn watercolor techniques by exploring the character and soul of abandoned places located throughout Tuscany. Sketchers use value, contrast, and color to reveal the often overlooked beauty of things left behind. As a guest artist, Anders provided
a narrative counterpoint to the emphasis on painting technique. Comparing their styles, one is immediately struck by the contrast between Majid’s watercolors and Anders’ work. “Majid is a painter, but I’m more of a sketcher. I’m very much about having people in my sketches and he is about the place.” The differences, they discovered, provided participants with a rich combination of sketching experiences. JULY 2018 31

CRIS FRANCHEVICH IS AN URBAN SKETCHING INSTRUCTOR WHO ENJOYS BEING SURPRISED BY HER ART AND BRINGS THAT JOY OF FRESH DISCOVERY INTO HER WORKSHOPS. SHE TELLS SUSAN SCHAFFHAUSEN ABUT HER LOVE OF WATERCOLOUR AND HOW URBAN SKETCHING HAS BECOME A FAMILY AFFAIR.
Originally from Brazil, she remembers the family moving frequently and her mother giving her an inexpensive box of colored pencils at age four, so she began drawing her world. In school, she tried oils but the lessons were strictly classical and she felt constrained. Cris knew that watercolor would be her medium from the first moment she tried it, watching the lovely surprise of the paint weaving its mystery into the paper. “I would lose interest if I knew what the results would be.”
Working over 20 years as an architect and urban planner, Cris now runs her own company doing residential remodeling. Her rendering skills as an architect were honed before drafting software became common. “I was doing this when ideas were hand-drawn and enhanced with watercolors. AutoCAD took the fun away.” She discovered Urban Sketching through a book-signing event at Wet Paint in Minnesota, where she resides and teaches.
The movement’s founder Gabi Campanario was just bringing “The Art of Urban Sketching” to public attention. While some sketchers struggle to balance family travel expectations with the need to stop frequently and paint, Cris simply made converts of her relatives. Her husband, Juan Carlos, joined Cris at the USk Symposium in Chicago and now he too is an unstoppable sketcher. Her daughter Júlia regularly attends sketch outings, and when Cris gave JULY 2018 37

a mini-workshop in Goiania, Brazil, her niece and nephew caught the urban sketching bug as well. Teaching children fits her hopes for the future of Urban Sketching. “I think we should invite more of the younger generation to our sketching groups.” She teaches kids as young as eight with a simple demonstration of a watercolor wash and some color play. Her tip for building confidence in both children and adult sketchers is consistent practice. “There are no real shortcuts to improving; it is important to sketch every day. Start with 15 minutes.” The infectious joy that radiates from Cris when she is teaching is a great opportunity for anyone to overcoming resistance; you can’t help yourself wanting to create in the presence of her enthusiasm.
Looking at her sketches, the idea of surprise and discovery shows as the bright spot of color just beyond the viewer’s location. Up ahead, between the walls of buildings lining a narrow street is a peek of light and vibrant color, the unknown something that will be encountered if you just keep exploring. Cris teaches workshops in Brazil, where she is the USk correspondent, and just returned from Tours, France, where she shared watercolor techniques through the Sister City Program at the invitation of Tours Correspondent Stéphane Prévot. Upcoming workshops include Oslo, Norway (Aug. 25-26), and Curitiba and Caxias do Sul, Brazil (Sept. 1-2).

Explaining why she doesn’t “just take a photo”, words are replaced by hearty laughter, not mocking, but struck by the profound difference between the experience of drawing and of photography, she then adds “sketching enhances the memories of the precious moments… a different way to remember.” Sketching is a necessary part of her creative process. She says it “fills up my inner library… gets me to look closely at the character of a person… drawing is my way of understanding the world around me and how things work”. At a recent Carnival of Cultures in Berlin, watching a street parade, she saw an amazing Samba dancer, whose moves were “fantastic, dynamic… I sketched him as fast as I could then sent him a photo of the sketch… he liked it so much, he said the sketch showed his soul… This is how sketching can connect people in a deeper way!” Johanna sketched alone for many years before finding the Urban Sketchers community. The difference she finds is that “on your own you do what you’re sure of, but sketching together helps one get out of your comfort zone, try new techniques and broaden your horizon in a technical way.” She was in Japan working with a calligraphy teacher and recalls “the calligraphic line is so hard! The instructor told us ‘don’t let the brush move

you, you must move the brush’ so I just watched how she held the brush and moved the brush. This let me understand how the body movements influence how you make your mark.” She looks for a subject that has impact, grabs her with an immediacy she describes as “yummy”, that conveys a sense of delight, mystery and more. She loves the bold, dirty grittiness of construction sites, drawing “overlooked things that aren’t shiny or perfect, rusty machines, things with character and a story to tell, things old and worn and discarded… a house torn down with a single flower blooming in front… dirt, ruin, flower… possibility!” Johanna’s workshop in Porto is titled “True Grit - Painting confidently with Chinese Ink”. She says, “painting directly with Chinese ink may take a bit of courage, but once you discover the many possibilities it is very satisfying… In this workshop we will discover that black ink is not only about strong linework, but also about delicate greys and everything inbetween, which can add amazing depth to your sketch.”
