PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Urban Sketchers, Since 2007, Urban Sketchers has grown from an online community of artists sharing sketches of where they live, to a global community of sketchers, educators and volunteers who draw, teach and work to make on-location sketching accessible to EVERYONE! Beginning May 25th, I ask you to give to Urban Sketchers’ 10K + 10K Matching Fund Campaign. With your help and commitment, we hope to raise $10,000 (USD) by June 8th, with donations graciously matched by a member of our sketching community for a total of $20,000. Your donation and the matching funds will support

the organization’s mission to promote on-location sketching to our global community. Check out the testimonials on the power of Urban Sketching on page 51. Support the campaign by sharing your story of how USk has changed your life on our USk Facebook page! Please help Urban Sketchers bring on-location sketching education to those who have not had the opportunity to show their world one drawing at a time. Happy sketching! Amber Sausen, USk President

Thank you to our 16k+ readers of Drawing Attention for your continued support. We invite you to send a Letter to the Editor of 200 words or less before the 15th of the month to the email address below. Please include your name and USk chapter. SKETCHING ADVENTURES IN

THE ALGARVE

THEY CRASHED A WEDDING, ENDURED RAIN, HIGH WINDS AND LOW TEMPERATURES, STRUGGLED WITH ILLNESS BUT HÉLIO BOTO AND RÓISÍN CURÉ STILL MET THEIR COMMITMENT TO SKETCH IN THE ALGARVE REGION OF PORTUGAL FORMING A NEW FRIENDSHIP ALONG THE WAY. n the glow of travel memories, intrepid sketchers Hélio Boto from Portimão, Portugal and Róisín Curé from Galway, Ireland laugh about the obstacles and silly situations they got into during their Sketch Tour Portugal trip March 20-26. “We broke down into hysterics all the time,” Róisín explains. It seemed the natural response to the difficulties they faced. “We called it extreme sketching,” she added. The theme of their Sketch Tour Portugal excursion was gastronomy and wine, nature, and sun & sea. The duo visited a national park in Olhão, a shallow coastline

Everyone was so laid back and genuine.” Surrounded by so much variety and scenic beauty the team developed a sketching rhythm and their sketches became more fluid from the pressure to produce six sketches per

They also learned a lot from each other and shared sketching tips and reflections about life. Róisín is grateful to Urban Sketchers and Tourism Portugal for this tremendous opportunity and we are grateful to Hélio for so graciously introducing his little corner of Portugal to Róisín and to the rest of us urban sketchers. ES IT HAPPEN!

Since Alex Zonis (above) founded the chapter in 2012, its more than 900 members have formed a tight, friendly, and innovative group. “Whenever there is something that needs to be done, there are people who spring up to do it, she says. Consequently, the group has ventured out in many ways, and most notably by hosting an ambitious yearly USk Chicago Sketch Seminar that effectively offers participants a Symposiumlike experience on a more modest scale. Chicago sketcher Don Colley first hatched the idea for a yearly Seminar in 2014 after recognizing MAY 2018 21

local desire for an event that was accessible and affordable. Translating this concept into practice, Alex and organizers made a decision to charge the minimum possible to meet expenses, with the idea of “ending up with zero dollars in the coffers.” 22 DRAWING ATTENTION

The first Seminar lasted two days, with eight workshops and 54 participants who each paid $20. As the events have grown and become more professional, their costs have risen somewhat, but this year’s June Seminar will be capped at 145 people and still cost a relatively

modest $75 each. The workshop faculty will also be augmented with some exciting long-distance instructors, but the first Seminars drew exclusively from local talent. Alex laughs as she recalls how she encouraged artists with no previous teaching experience – even pushed

USk Workshop

and dragged them “in a friendly way” – to instruct supportive local participants. She takes pride in seeing how confident and successful some of these instructors have since become. Alex has many happy memories of learning and camaraderie during the Seminars, but of course there are always some unanticipated challenges. She recounts one workshop that she struggled to teach after garbage trucks swooped in to load trash on three sides of her park location! This year, she’s excited about workshop offerings that will go beyond techniques of drawing and painting to related concerns like new kinds of tools, promotion of one’s artwork, and collaborative ideas like the “panorama party” that will constitute one workshop in which participants will assemble their individual images, quilt-like, into one large panoramic vision.

b

In recent years, the venerable Palette & Chisel Academy of Fine Arts, housed in a lovely three-storey mansion, has donated the venue space that serves as a kind of home base for ceremonies and other indoor activities. Most workshops and the sketchwalks will naturally occur out in the city, and there are some fun auxiliary aspects, like goodie bags, commemorative t-shirts, a Drink & Draw dinner where the community can gather over food, and a raffle for art supplies and books. Registration for this year’s Seminar closes May 1st, but Alex hopes that interested sketchers will check in with USk Chicago around December for next year’s seminar dates. She invites us to “Come sketch in Chicago, where we have such variety—both a lake and a river, skyscrapers and historic buildings, and people of all backgrounds—almost everything imaginable!”

f you’re a sketcher living close to the European city of Prague, perhaps you were lucky enough to snag a ticket to Mário Linhares’ upcoming workshop, “Urban Sketchers Weekend”, taking place June 15-17, in the capital city of the Czech Republic. Although sold out, this weekend event will be a fantastic opportunity to learn what it means to be an Urban Sketcher and discover all the tools you’ll need to get started. “Anyone can be an urban sketcher, you don’t need to have special talents, just a sketchbook and a pen,” Mário explained. “It’s only a sketchbook and you can keep it private, or share with others on social media, but first you must have a desire to sketch your world.”

Sketchers, Lapin Barcelona, Shari Blaukopf, Behzad Bagheri, TIA Boon Sim, Paul Wong, Veronica Lawlor, Rita Sabler and Fred Lynch, among others. This is where participants will learn how to start using a sketchbook in their daily life. Saturday’s full day workshop will focus on the fundamentals of being an urban sketcher, along with tips on how to shake the fear that may overcome them when faced with a new sketchbook -- or your first sketchbook. Sketching is often something we do by ourselves; this workshop will be a great

The weekend will be divided into three different events, kicking off Friday night with a lecture open to everyone. opportunity to learn alongside the sketching community, while discovering there’s more than one way to be a sketcher. Sunday will be an open “Sketchwalk”, led by Mário and the local admins from the Prague Chapter. For those who have never ventured out to sketch in the streets with others, this will be an opportunity to experience the spirit of the Urban Sketchers community; and this event is open to all. Mário will travel to Prague with his wife Ketta and son Matteo; proving that families who sketch together have more fun! Mário Linhares lives in Lisbon, Portugal with his family, and has studied at the Artistic School António Arroio. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Landscape Design, and a master’s degree in Visual Arts Education. ell-traveled, having worked in Singapore for over 20 years, and in Perth, in western Australia, Asnee Tasna enjoys sketching the most when he is on the go, country-hopping. New sights inspire him. “Sketching is most enjoyable when you are travelling, when you meet new people, new places, anything different from your normal life.” When homesickness hit him, Asnee retired from his trade in architecture, and went back to his hometown of Bangkok, Thailand. “As an architect, you do a lot of sketching,” he acknowledges, but it was in retirement that he went about exploring his own country and sketching for fun. He now teaches first year architecture students in two different universities. “A lot of students use only the computer these days, and they are afraid to draw by hand,” Asnee reports, so he champions freehand sketching in his classes. As a veteran educator, Asnee has conducted workshops at the Lisbon and Chicago Symposia. Back home, he is one of the admins of USk Thailand, founded three years ago, and one of the few nationwide chapters. Together with his friend Pramote Kitchumnongpan, they set up and encouraged the USk movement in several cities and regions in Thailand. However, small city-based MAY 2018 31

groups were not successful, partly because most people in them “felt more like artists than sketchers”, Asnee concludes. “Eventually, we decided to form a single official USk platform that Thai sketchers from across the country could make use of.” Besides regular monthly sketchcrawls, USk Thailand has been successful in organizing the Asia-Link Sketchwalk in 2016, with 314 participants. Asnee is also part of another group called Bangkok Sketchers. “They have been around for seven or eight years,” he says, and members of this group number the impressive figure of just under 12,000. The group practices a broader range of activities, and do not abide solely by the USk manifesto. “They just draw what they like, even from photos.” Yet, according to Asnee, many members feel they belong to both groups. “Sometimes, members post their sketches in both venues.” This group intermingling and exchange, partially explains the high number of members (over 1600) of USk Thailand.

Interestingly, Asnee describes the unique USk Thailand chapter as a “center stage where sketchers from the whole country can combine and share their work.” It is his personal goal that, from north to south Thailand, “the variation in culture and way of living” gets expression in this common platform. TIPS FOR BEGINNERS: Concentrate on what you’re doing, and don’t care so much about whether it looks good, or if it looks like anybody else’s work. Focus on your own way of working. You should be very proud and confident of your own path. Complete what you are doing. If you finish one drawing in your own way, it will always end up as good work.

elcome to Indonesia’s capital city, Jakarta, a melting pot of extremes and a dynamic center of juxtapositions. A sprawling megalopolis with over 9 million people, it’s very hard to talk about “one” city because it consists of so many different cultures: it is an amalgam of jungle, little villages, culturally diverse neighborhoods, and towering skyscrapers. One of the oldest cities in the country, Jakarta boasts Colonial era

architecture in Old Jakarta (Kota Tua Jakarta), Japanese cultural influences, varied traditional street markets, near constant rebuilding, and visitors from around the world – in other words, an urban sketcher’s cornucopia of subject matter. And like the city they call home, the sketchers who make up USk Indonesia are also a wideranging group. USk Indonesia originated nearly a decade ago when an already existing group,Indonesia Sketchers,

embraced the USk concept. That sketching organization is still very much alive and helps to facilitate online the many local sketch groups who gather, share sketches, and post from various locations around Indonesia. An online community provides a common meeting ground for the over 200 very widespread members. Sketchers are so widespread, in fact, that some have never actually met in person – yet they actively interact virtually. And because there can be language barriers when sketchers

Jakarta is chaotic, crowded, and cosmopolitan, and gridlock is common. He shares that some visitors have discovered getting stuck in heavy traffic can

be frustrating – or it can provide one with an opportunity to engage in a little public transportation sketching! In fact, Saluling personally enjoys sitting quietly and sketching his surroundings while waiting for congestion to wane. Jakarta is balmy and humid, with significant wet weather between October though May, but a dry, hot season from June to September, the recommended best time for sketchers to visit. Saluling

He also speaks highly of the sketching opportunities that streets and parks offer, especially with regard to the variety of interesting merchandise and food on display. Traditional dancers are often encountered in the parks. And of course, a trip to the nearby island of Sumatra, Borneo, Java, or Bali provides equally diverse sketching opportunities.

A MINIMALIST APPROACH TO SKETCHING BY ANN SCHWARTZWALD

M

ike Daikubara, an enthusiastic sketcher and artist, will be a presenter at the upcoming Urban Sketchers International Symposium in Porto Portugal this summer. Mike is an industrial designer who began sketching almost 20 years ago strictly to improve his visual communication skills and be more effective professionally. “Before 2000, I did not sketch. As a matter of fact, I hated sketching/drawing. Even as a child I didn’t like it.” With practice he grew to appreciate the power of drawing fluently and quickly; then he began to really enjoy it. “In 2010 when I accidentally found out about a sketching symposium taking place in Portland, Oregon and decided to go check it out. That was the very first Urban Sketchers Symposium and that event changed my life.” Mike has a minimalist approach to sketching: “For me, the most enjoyment comes from the actual act of sketching and not much from various techniques or tools. But I do get excited when I find out about a tip, tricks or mind sets that help me be able to sketch more.” His new book and his workshop in Porto cover the essence of what he’s learned since embracing the magic of quick drawing. Both are titled ‘Sketch Now, Think Later’. His approach is

practical and makes sketching a non-threatening, fun adventure. A few of the biggest challenges he addresses are finding time, overcoming the self-consciousness of drawing in public, and dealing with weather and other elements of the environment urban sketchers find themselves in.

Mike uses a simple kit containing a few traditional tools: his sketchbook, a pen with waterproof ink, a small watercolor palette, a water brush and a spray mister. He summarizes: “My ultimate goal is to convey the fact that no matter how time limiting our daily lives might feel, you can always make time and slip in a sketch. A fulfilling sketch does not have to take lots of time… you will eventually start getting used to being able to sketch in any situation, with limited time, tools and techniques which ultimately leads to being able to create more sketches!” Check the USk website for upcoming workshops that Mike will be teaching in Boston this summer.

TOOL TIP: There is no magic pen to help you draw better! Try to find a tool that makes you feel good using it. I’m personally addicted to fountain pens since every line I put down feels good and brings me joy. The more joy I have from my tools, the more sketches I create!

MIKE’S SKETCHING IN PUBLIC TIP: Drawing in public can be nerve racking! The truth is that most people don’t really care what we’re doing. And people who do care are genuinely interested in our artwork and are impressed with what we can do. So the next time you’re sketching in public, don’t be shy. Let people see what you’re doing. Also don’t wear music headphones. Make it easy for people to talk with you. The conversations you have with strangers will add more depth and memory to the sketch you do! MAY 2018 47

H

o Chi Minh City, Vietnam is affectionately known as Saigon by locals. According to Phong Khieu, one of USk Saigon’s group administrators, the city’s historical architecture serves as a backdrop to the lively “openminded street culture of Saigon people.” Fruit-filled pushcarts, street vendors, and a variety of transportation modes animate the city scene and make for excellent sketching opportunities. The city center is the best place to sketch with its ancient Indochinese architecture. It offers interesting subjects for panoramic or detailed views. “I often go sketching here with my international friends,” said Phong.
