PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Urban Sketchers, I want to share great news with you: Interest in Urban Sketchers is growing worldwide. Sketching groups from all around the world are applying for membership in extraordinary numbers and we are very happy about that. To simplify the chapter application process and to better keep track of all USk chapters, we will use a new database platform. The database software will help chapters better manage information, communicate, and

share ideas and resources. Chapter Administrators will receive an email from our Membership Coordinator with more details in early October, so remember to check your messages in the Google group. For Urban Sketchers who are not chapter administrators, you can look forward to fresh sketching opportunities and ways to connect with fellow urban sketchers around the world. Happy sketching, Amber Sausen, USk President

COMMUNICATION DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Every month it’s like Christmas in the Drawing Attention virtual office. Gorgeously written stories pour in to our inbox from our amazing team of writers introducing us to new sketchers and giving us a peek into the sketchbooks of our longtime favourites. It’s very difficult to choose which sketches will appear in the zine every month. We want to publish everything but that would make for a very long zine indeed! This month we’re pleased to feature Celia Burgos from Cádiz, Inma Serrano from Seville and Simonetta Capecchi from Naples and we know you will enjoy getting to know sketchers from chapters in Atlanta, Maestrat and Edinburgh. Many thanks to our writers, proofreaders, layout designer and tech team for pulling together another great edition! Brenda Murray, USk Communications Director drawingattention@urbansketchers.org

10X10 WORKSHOPS IT’S LIKE COMING HOME Attending a USk symposium is like coming home. It’s an opportunity to meet new friends from all over the world, to reconnect with old friends and to rub shoulders with the sketching superstars that you’ve been following all year. These people “get” you. This is your tribe. They are as crazed about the latest new sketchbook as you are. They understand the frustration of a sketch that doesn’t quite meet your expectations. And they share your yearning to improve your sketching skills. Check out the 2018 symposium video filmed in beautiful Porto, Portugal to get a taste of the symposium experience.

USK EDINBURGH EXHIBITION MILESTONE USK EDINBURGH HAD BEEN ACTIVE FOR TWO YEARS WHEN ORGANIZERS DECIDED THEY WANTED TO INCREASE PARTICIPATION AND MEMBERSHIP. SUSAN ROGERS FOUND OUT HOW THEY DID IT.

USk Edinburgh decided that an Urban sketching exhibition at the Scottish Storytelling Centre would highlight their group’s activities and give the public an insight into urban sketching. The Scottish Storytelling Centre is a not-for-profit exhibition and performance space incorporating John Knox house. It was designed by Malcolm Fraser Architects and is the world’s first purpose-built centre for live storytelling. It is situated in the heart of the historical centre on the Royal Mile, which links Holyrood Palace (the residence of the Queen when she is in Edinburgh) with Edinburgh Castle. Everyone involved agreed that it would be a good fit for the centre and the group. In August 2018, during the height of the tourist season, the group 8 DRAWING ATTENTION

held a month-long exhibition focussed on sketches of Edinburgh. “The exhibition was to be inclusive”, said Admin Pam Thorburn (pictured left). “Anyone who wanted to exhibit could. All works were selfselected and anyone from complete beginner to highly competent artists were encouraged to become involved. The only stipulations were that sketches should comply with the Urban Sketchers manifesto and that participants must have attended at least 5 sketch meets before the exhibition dates.” The exhibit was a great success. They received 35 new member requests and a local hospital invited the group to sketch and exhibit there as part of the hospital’s 150th celebrations. Visitors commented about how

nice it is to see Edinburgh through local artists’ eyes, and that they were inspired to paint. Pam reflects that after all the hard work of organizing, “the greatest success has been bringing cohesion to our chapter and generating excitement about urban sketching. Prior to the exhibition, members were shy about posting their sketches to our Facebook page, but now engagement in the group is high.” USk Edinburgh welcomes visiting sketchers to their World Heritage city. With so many enticing sites, such as medieval buildings, Georgian architecture, cathedrals, parks and gardens, quaint alleyways and spooky graveyards there no shortage of inspiration. SOCIAL SKETCHERS IN A CAPTIVATING PLACE LESLIE AKCHURIN LEARNS HOW A CHAPTER IN SPAIN MAKES THE MOST OF ITS SURROUNDINGS.

A small district in eastern Spain, where the magnificence of its mountains running into the blue sea is only surpassed by the drama of its complex history, the Maestrat would seem to have been crying out for on-location sketchers. In 2016, Eloi Pons Marzal answered this call by establishing a sketch group in his home town of Benicarlo, having become motivated by interactions with USk Barcelona sketchers the previous year. In 2017, USk Maestrat was officially established and it now constitutes a thriving community, with five to twenty artists coming together every three or four weeks for sketching and good times. The variety and interest of the Maestrat’s subject matter is envy inducing. Comprising several small cities and about 20 towns, it combines “very modern buildings, but also ancient Iberian settlements, streets of Arab origin, medieval castles, Gothic palaces, baroque churches, and Art Nouveau houses.” According to Eloi, “The coastal area is very touristy, with cities like Peniscola, but the inland villages, like Sant Mateu, are very calm and pleasant. And some of the group’s favorite places to draw are small beaches or fields of ancient olive trees, whose trunks grow into fantastic shapes.” To better enjoy the mountains, the chapter has SKETCH BY ENRIC MOYA 12 DRAWING ATTENTION

plans to combine sketching with trekking excursions, perhaps to medieval forts or ancient hermitages. And in the cities, great sketching options include colorful outdoor markets and the terraces of centrally located bars. Eloi says that the group is really distinguished by its members. “We have a good atmosphere among us, we have become friends, and we try to make the meetings pleasant for everyone who comes.”

Their fun-loving spirit is evident in their annual gastronomic sketch crawl through the bars of Benicarlo during the Artichoke Festival in January. They drink, eat, draw… and then award framed original drawings as first, second, and third prizes to the bars that served them the most artistically composed plates of food. For this and other convivial occasions, Eloi invites the whole world of sketchers to join them!

ELOI’S TIP FOR OTHER CHAPTERS: WHENEVER POSSIBLE, TRY TO ORGANIZE SKETCH MEETUPS IN CONJUNCTION WITH OTHER CULTURAL ASSOCIATIONS OR CITY ORGANIZATIONS. THIS ADDS INTEREST TO BOTH AND HELPS TO COMMUNICATE THE EXCITEMENT OF URBAN SKETCHING TO THE PUBLIC.

USK ATLANTA: NEW CHAPTER ON THE BLOCK USK ATLANTA HAS ONLY BEEN OFFICIALLY ESTABLISHED FOR LITTLE OVER A YEAR, BUT IT’S ALREADY THRIVING SAYS ITS FOUNDER MINNIE BHUPATHI: “IT SURPRISES ME DAILY HOW THIS LITTLE GROUP IS BLOSSOMING INTO A GROUP OF ENERGETIC PEOPLE THAT ALL SEEM TO SHARE THIS CRAZY PASSION FOR DRAWING.” BY SARAH MINTY

OCTOBER 2018 17

Featured Chapter

Previously part of USk Chicago, when Minnie (above) moved to Atlanta three years ago and realised there wasn’t a local chapter, she decided to do something about it and founded the Atlanta Sketch Club along with one other member – Monika Gupta (left). As they opened the group up to more people it began to grow, and once they became an official chapter and changed the name of their Facebook group they had a “deluge of people”. Now with over 300 members, both Minnie and Monika agree that it’s Atlanta’s weather that makes the city so conducive for sketching outdoors. But from speaking to them it’s clear there’s more to it than that. There’s a real energy and entrepreneurialism driving the chapter that they both lead. “We do lots of learning and sharing, keeping each other inspired and motivated” describes Minnie, with the group often doing a “show and tell” of old sketchbooks or favourite “How To” books for everyone to look through. “That’s been really popular with members…it inspires them to do more.” THE STACKS LOFTS COTTON MILL IN ATLANTA BY ERIC SCHUNCK 18 DRAWING ATTENTION

Monika also describes how the group once all sketched the exact same view: “It was so beautiful to see the different perspectives, even of the same building,” and it’s the fun and comradery of urban sketching which she enjoys the most. “In the process of capturing a scene, I see what is in front of me so much better and I enjoy it so much more. Those memories just stay with me, and to do it with friends, it’s a special experience.” With plans in the pipeline for sketching trips away too, it doesn’t seem like this young chapter needs any encouragement. So, if you’re ever in Atlanta, go along to a meet-up if you can, “we have lunch afterwards regularly” says Minnie, “because you get hungry when you sketch”, and Atlanta is the perfect place for both sketchers and foodies alike.

“S

ometimes you sit in a place and you see a lot of things, but you don’t know how to choose what to draw, how to express what you’re feeling there.” Inma Serrano was explaining the key ideas behind her October workshop ‘Pushing How to Look’. I wanted to know more about what her workshop participants would experience. Serrano prefers to draw everyday life, the things one encounters in neighborhoods where people live and shop, taverns and places where people sit. She wants to share a “less is more”philosophy with sketchers. Her passion for seeking out that which is most essential in a drawing is contagious; within minutes I find myself sharing in her gusto: How do we learn “how” to see, how to select elements in the environment, to stress what we feel there rather than dispassionately recording only the accurate detail of a place?

Serrano seeks to communicate the feeling of being there and relies on her academic background to do so. Sketchers learn that by composing a page one can guide the viewer in a visual conversation. I wonder aloud what the biggest challenges are for her workshop participants and she doesn’t hesitate in her response. “People come to learn how to loosen up. Some people, maybe they like to draw too real, but that’s not how I work.” It sounds to me like a very expressive approach to sketching. I learn that Serrano plans to emphasize strategies for selecting what to include and what to leave out of a sketch – that one doesn’t sketch everything. That isn’t the point. She describes her own work as “half-finished sketches.” Looking at her drawings it’s immediately clear what she means by this: Not every part of a sketch demonstrates the same level of finish. Some elements are much more fine-tuned than others. Some are simply scribbles. The resulting abstractions resonate with me; a narrative seems to emerge from each visually engaging drawing. In many ways the energy of her lines reveal an almost chaotic appeal, as though each mark was hovering just on the brink of being out of control. It’s this thought that brings me to the realization of the one word that describes what Serrano seems to be seeking: Energy. As our conversation draws to a close, Serrano asks me what my favorite color is. I tell her that I love yellow. “Yes,” she says dreamily. “Yellow is the best.” Inma Serrano lives and teaches in Seville, Spain. She is currently working on a book of sketches that explores the city she loves from the outskirts in to the city center.

Carnival in

Cádiz

IT WAS CARNIVAL SEASON—FEBRUARY 2018—IN CÁDIZ, SPAIN’S OLDEST INHABITED CITY. WHAT A PERFECT SETTING FOR AN URBAN SKETCHERS WORKSHOP, ‘RHYTHM, LIGHT, AND COLOR’ WITH THREE VERY DIFFERENT EXPERIENCED SKETCH INSTRUCTORS, CELIA BURGOS (CÁDIZ), SWASKY (BARCELONA) AND ISABEL CARMONA (LONDON). BY JANE WINGFIELD

T

he festivities in Cádiz gradually transform the normally relaxed vibe into a colorful, chaotic rhythm of light and color. Celia describes her city like this: “Its narrow streets, the lack of traffic, its architectural aspect, unchanged for three hundred years when Cádiz thrived while doing commerce with America; the landscape of its rooftop terraces, its sightseeing towers, its family-owned small businesses … they all build a space and a lifestyle that constantly makes you travel back in time.” “There are many things that surprise me in Cádiz, but what I mostly appreciate is the way local people treat you…And its light. Due to its latitude it has a unique kind of light, especially during sunset, when the city is dyed with light and coloured shadows creating a magical setting.” The workshop was divided time into three sections: Light and Rhythm in Watercolour (Isabel); Focusing on the coloured rhythm of the city (Celia); and Let’s tell people’s stories in “el barrio de la Viña” (Swasky). “The course was very fluid, enjoyable and intense at the same time and the participants got really involved.” At the start of the workshop they focused on the daily life and peaceful rhythm of the city. They migrated to different locations to experience a diverse vision of the city. “We could discover the city through different points of view: at street level, from its highest tower and from a medium height, on the terraces. This meant that we could work from different perspectives, experimenting with different rhythms and sensations of light and colour,” reports Celia. It was a challenge to plan a workshop during Carnival. Celia was concerned that it might prove to be too chaotic but instead it gave the workshop more stimuli, more colour, more music, more fun, which they captured in their drawings.

“The unhurried daily rhythm interrupted by the festive rhythm of the carnival, the light at sunset in contrast with the rest of the day passionately charged the content giving us an opportunity to unravel all those hues and shades through our drawings.” They celebrated the last day with a sketchcrawl that included local and visiting sketchers. They drew the “carousel of Choirs on the streets.” One of Celia’s favorite memories was “a very special moment that we shared during sunset on the rooftop terrace, the connection we felt, that shared silence…I could even say that time stood still for us leaving aside the hubbub of the city.”

From Architecture to People: Mixing it up with

Simo Capecchi

VETERAN USK INSTRUCTOR AND ILLUSTRATOR SIMO CAPECCHI HAS A PHD IN ARCHITECTURAL DRAWING, BUT BRINGS HER SKETCHES TO LIFE WITH EXPRESSIVE LINES SHOWING PEOPLE AND MOVEMENT. BY PATRICIA CHOW

“T

he technique is simple. I draw with a line, since I am an architect, and slowly, using a Hero fountain pen.” Color comes later, never overshadowing the line. “After so much architecture training, I learned to draw bodies and movement by watching actors rehearsing.” She has done live sketching of actors performing tableaux vivant, using “a big brush and fast motions” which were projected onto the stage behind the actors. Since 2015, Simo, who lives in Naples, Italy, has been the back page columnist for Dove magazine, where she illustrates a full-page story, including accompanying text, about a travel destination featured in the magazine. Her Porto workshop gave participants insights into her process: putting together the layout, incorporating the perspective of a reader into the text and drawings, sketching for print rather than social media, and even working with the editor to keep everything politically correct when drawing a blonde woman in a pool for a story about Ischia, where Angela Merkel is known to vacation!

Simo has been involved with Urban Sketchers since 2006 when she was curating an exhibition of artist sketchbooks with USk logo designer Franco Lancio. The two found USk founder, Gabi Campanario, on the internet, and USk in Italy was born. Simo gives several workshops a year and has taught at almost every USk Symposium. She teaches “what to sketch, not how.” For her, it’s all about the location and finding a good story to recount. “I am always looking for interesting places and people or activities to inspire you to sketch.”

Often Simo teaches jointly with other USk instructors and guest artists. Previous workshops have been held in a historic villa in Tuscany, in Naples, and in a castle on the island of Ischia, with Caroline Peyron and guest instructors Lapin, Nina Johansson, Federico Gemma, Laura Scarpa, Ch’ng Kiah Kiean, Kelly Medford and Gabi Campanario. storied opera house – the oldest in the world – led to a behind-the-scenes reportage project where Simo spent two months backstage sketching everything from opera and ballet rehearsals to the costume and scenery shops. At the beginning of September, Simo exhibited her work at the Festival of the Mind in Sarzana, Italy. Titled “Notebooks in the wind” (Taccuini nel vento), and curated by Italian notebook manufacturer Moleskine, the exhibition is a collection of sketches from a research project on a sailing boat that Simo participated in with philosopher Roberto Casati, videographer Rocco Soldini, and the Taqwin Cultural Association. What’s next? Keeping up with the constant activity demanded by social media has been a challenge, and she admires USk social media folks who are able to keep up! Simo hopes to participate in more local projects in the near future, such as 10x10 workshops, while taking a little break from international workshops. In bocca al lupo!
