Chimney Pot Park is a community of awardwinning upside down houses in Salford. Urban Splash has brought the terraced house slap bang up to date. The best bits have been kept – the size, the shape, the roof, the front door, the streets, but with the help of architects shedkm, the insides are something altogether new. Retaining original facades and streetscapes and introducing a new steel frame construction behind has allowed the best use of space. What was once an unused alleyway behind the houses has become secure undercroft carparking spaces, with generous terraces for each house built on top. Inside, the houses are ‘up-side down’, with two bedrooms, a bathroom and closet space downstairs, and a generous open plan living space upstairs. What was once loft space has been converted into a mezzanine level with a skylight, providing either a kitchen or a living room snug. The open design of the terraces at the rear and the communal herb garden have fostered a great sense of community at Chimney Pot Park and the success of this development has had a visible knock on effect for the local area. Since Urban Splash moved into Castlefield in the late 90’s, we have been instrumental in transforming this area from an industrial brownfield site into a thriving new community. We’ve brought it back to life by converting existing buildings and by creating new modern buildings.
