History The trans-Atlantic slave trade brought millions of Africans to America with many passing through the port of Savannah forming the Geechee and Gullah cultures of the Atlantic coastal communities in Georgia and South Carolina. The slave trade in the South would lead to new social economic era where the color of one’s skin determined whether you lived your life enslaved or free. THEODORE A. WRIGHT STADIUM FOOTBALL AND TRACK & FIELD The Savannah State Tigers will be playing their 43rd season in Theodore A. Wright Stadium. In 2011, the Tigers played their first game in newly renovated T.A. Wright Stadium on October 1, after a $6 million revitalization project in 2010 that included new professional style locker rooms, ticket boots, concession areas, brick front, and field turf. The 2010 renovations added 500 seats to the stadium for a total capacity of 8,500, and heralded the inaugural season of competition in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. In 2009, a new press box was added, featuring a president’s box. The stadium has undergone three major renovations since it was built in 1969. The most significant of these was the 1995 renovations that added the current track. In the 2009 a new press box was built prior to 2010’s complete renovations. The original stadium’s construction was part of massive school building project that spanned from 1964 to 1971. The new stadium was built at a cost of $133, 665 and John McGlockton, a 1935 graduate was instrumental in securing the lighting at no expense to the college. Prior to the current location in T.A. Wright Stadium the SSU football team played in several different locations in the over 100 hundred years of competitive football. From 1902 to 1940, the Tigers played where the King-Frazier building now stands on the Savannah State campus. From 1940 to the 1970, they played on the grounds that the A.H. Gordon Library sits on today. The SSU Track and Field team has competed in the stadium since 1995. The Tigers host multiple track and field events each year, utilizing the multiple fields inside and around T.A. Wright Stadium for events such as discuss, javelin throw, high jump, triple jump, and long jump.

2016 season outlook

Raeburn Aims To Turn Around Tiger Football Savannah State University has turned over the keys to the football program to head coach Erik Raeburn. University officials hope that Raeburn can rebuild the once proud program with discipline and wins. Raeburn inherits a program that has not had a winning season since 1998 and has not won a road contest since 2011. The SSU job became available when Earnest Wilson left in February to take the head football job at Division II Elizabeth City State University. Raeburn is making his way to SSU from Wabash College. A proven winner, in his eight years at Wabash, he accumulated a record of 78-13, earned five trips to the Division III playoffs and had 16 student-athletes earn All-America status. His 2015 squad posted a 12-1 record and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division III playoffs. In 16 years as a head coach, Raeburn has a 135-39 record. During the 2015 season, Savannah State snapped a 24-game losing streak with their lone victory over Florida A&M. The Tigers only had ten seniors last year but lost 30 lettermen during the off-season. SSU is expected to return 64 players which include 16 starters.

OFFENSE The Tigers return playmaking quarterback Arshon Spaulding. The rising junior started the year at wide receiver but ended up leading the squad in rushing (555 yards and 4 touchdowns) and passing (526 yards and 1 touchdown). The offensive line lost three starters but do return Afolabi Ayangbayi and James Livingston. All conference lineman Devon Stainrod finished his eligibility while Sean Fogarty, another all conference player, and Joey Maddox decided to transfer. Spaulding will count heavily on returning receivers Jeremiah Harris, Anthony Raymond and Gary Scott as well as tight end Nicholas Carrera. Nicholas Bentley is the most experienced returning running back. Harris had 19 receptions last season for 212 yards while Bentley carried the ball 32 times for 105 yards and a pair of touchdowns. As a unit, the Tigers averaged 15.4 points and 246.1 yards per game.

Raeburn led Wabash to a 10-2 record in 2014, including a berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs and finished 13th in the final D3football.com. Before he became head coach at Wabash, Raeburn spent eight years as head football coach at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he posted a 51-26 record. Prior to arriving at Coe, he was an assistant coach at his alma mater, Mount Union College, where he served as offensive line coach and offensive coordinator.

At Coe, Raeburn coached 65 All-Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IAAC) players, 40 All-Americans, and two Academic All-Americans. He guided Coe to its first IIAC title in school history in 2002, and followed with conference championships in 2004 and 2005. He was the 2002 IIAC Coach of the Year and Regional Coach of the Year. He led the Kohawks to a playoff appearance in 2002, advancing to the second round, and also led Coe to the playoffs in 2005. Raeburn’s overall record as a head coach is 135-39. Raeburn earned his Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Mount Union College and is currently pursuing his master’s degree. As an assistant coach under Larry Kehres at Mount Union, he helped the Purple Raiders win six Ohio Athletic Conference Championships and three NCAA Division III National Championships (1996, 1997, 1998). tiger tale

For Many Years, Savannah State University had no documented football athletics history. However, in 1990, Dr. Charles J. Elmore compiled the information upon which the SSU continuing athletics history is built. We now have an abundance of compiled information to document our rich football athletics heritage. The earliest recorded date for football at Savannah State was Thanksgiving Day of 1902 when the Georgia Industrial College won its only game that year. There are no additional football records until 1907 when GIC had another one-game season on Thanksgiving Day and lost. There have been 19 head coaches in the history of SSU football. The first person actually hired to coach football was Richard Richardson who was a graduate of Morehouse College. He was coach from 1929-1934. Although he was preceded by a gentleman named W. P. Tucker (1915-1928), he is generally recognized as the first head football coach. Richardson was followed by Arthur Dwight (19351939), W. Mckinley King (1940-1941), John Myles (1942 head coach and player); Myles was also the coach in 1946. There was no football played from 1943 to 1945 because of World War II. Myles was followed by Ted Wright ( 19471949), John Martin (1949-1952), Albert Frazier (1953), Ross Pearly (1954-1956), Richard Washington (1957-1963), Leo Richardson (1964-1968), John Myles (1969-1976), Frank Ellis Jr.(1977-1985), William R. Davis (1986-1992), Joseph C. Crosby (1993-1995), Wendell Avery (1995-1996), Daryl McNeill ( 1997-1998), Steven Wilks (1999) , William R. Davis (2000-2001), Ken Pettiford (2002-2003), and Richard F. Basil(2003-). Combined, the 19 coaches have compiled a career record of 239-348-29 in 98 years of competition. Six years of statistics (1917-1921 and 1924) are unaccounted for and only partial records exist for three (1934, 1936, 1940).

In 1938, Georgia State (school name was changed in 1932 from Georgia Industrial to Georgia State) celebrated her first football championship. The Tigers led the South Atlantic Athletic Conference with a 6-2 record. In 1947, Georgia State became a charter member of the Southeastern Athletic Conference. The second conference title came to the institution in 1967 when Savannah State College (so named in 1950) was best with a 6-2-1 record. Savannah State joined the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1969 as a Division III participant and under the leadership of Coach John Myles, SSU had the best record in 1972 at 6-3-1. 1981 saw Tiger athletics move from Division III to Division II and 2000 saw them move to Division I-AA (NCAA) in which they are competing today.

The move to division II opened a new era in Savannah State Football. SSU took her lumps through the first four years in the new division, but in 1996, along came William R. “Bill” Davis. The Davis era lasted until 1992. During that seven year span, the SSU football program enjoyed a string of successes. Davis led the Tigers to their best ever records of 8-2 in 1988 and 8-1 in 1989. The cream floated to the top in 1992 when the Tigers played in their first ever NCAA Football Playoff. They finished the regular season with an 8-3 record. Savannah State opted to move to Division 1-AA in 1998 and has since been independent of conference affiliation. 2000 marked the first year that the university was a counter at the 1-AA level. Full membership was granted in 2002. March 20, 2000 saw William R. “Bill” Davis return to the confines of Savannah State University as head football coach. His return signaled the beginning of a new football era for the University. However, the second Davis era was short lived as Davis passed away in the spring of 2002. Kenneth Pettiford was hired to replace Davis in June 2002. Pettiford struggled through the ‘02 season compiling a record of 1-9, but had an outstanding recruiting year and hoped to turn the program around. As it turned out, fortunes were not good for Pettiford as he was replaced five games into the 2003 season after failing to win a game. He was replaced by Richard F. Basil who finished the remainder of the season on an interim basis. Basil was appointed head football coach at the end of the season and now leads the Tiger football team into the 2005 season.
