History The trans-Atlantic slave trade brought millions of Africans to America with many passing through the port of Savannah forming the Geechee and Gullah cultures of the Atlantic coastal communities in Georgia and South Carolina. The slave trade in the South would lead to new social economic era where the color of one’s skin determined whether you lived your life enslaved or free. Steward is responsible for all matters related to managing Savannah State’s NCAA Division I sport programs for men and women including budgeting; compliance with university, University System of Georgia (USG) and NCAA policies and rules; and fundraising for programmatic needs. “Mr. Steward brings to Savannah State’s athletic program a wealth of knowledge in rules compliance and education, as well as extensive experience in athletic program management, event promotions and publicity, fundraising, facility management and fiscal affairs,” Dozier said. “I have every confidence in his ability to lead Savannah State to new heights that will make us all proud.” During his five years at Savannah State, Steward has supervised the 5.1 million dollar budget for all sixteen sports, served as a member of the President’s Senior Council Staff and secured guaranteed football games worth an estimated 5 million dollars. He has forged relationships with local businesses by developing sponsorship opportunities. These opportunities provide local businesses and the community the ability to engage the SSU fan base while promoting their company’s brand. He has maintained a culture of academic excellence by developing and implementing an academic support unit to address Academic Performance Rate (APR). He has also served on the booster club’s executive management team; developed and managed a comprehensive NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics program which sponsors sixteen varsity sports; marketed athletic sports events which increased attendance at baseball, softball, volleyball, football and basketball games; developed bid proposals to secure outside athletic events on the SSU campus; and created and established good rapport in the community. Steward came to Savannah State from Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena, Miss., where he served as senior consultant for Athletics Administration. Prior to that, he was interim athletic director/associate athletic director for compliance at Alabama State University (ASU) in Montgomery, AL. At ASU, Steward was a member of the President’s Senior Council Staff and supervised 18 head coaches and other departmental employees with an $8.7 million dollar annual budget. Prior to working at ASU, Steward held a number of positions at Kentucky State University (KSU) in Frankfort, Ky., over a four-year period including assistant athletic director/compliance coordinator, interim athletic director/compliance coordinator and assistant athletic director for administration/compliance coordinator. Before joining KSU’s staff, Steward served at Eastern Oregon University as its assistant athletic director for internal operations and held a similar position at Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans from 1999 until 2004. A native of New Orleans, Steward attended the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Miss., where he received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in 1993 and 1996, respectively, in human performance and recreation.

2016-17 season outlook

Savannah State University women’s basketball team finished the 2015-16 season with a 10-18 record, including a 7-9 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference record.

Also returning for the Lady Tigers are junior Lauryn Fields (2.4 apg), sophomore guard Deyja Brown (31.3 percent from 3-point line), and sophomore guard Jacqueline Anderson.

After winning the MEAC Tournament in the 2014-15 season, the Lady Tigers entered the tournament as the eighth seed last season, but fell to South Carolina State in the first round in overtime.

The 2015-16 season, the Lady Tigers were hit by the injury bug. Senior forward Charmia Graham and junior forward Aiyannah Peal suffered season injuries before the season opener. Brown sat out for 10 games, Treadwell sat out 13 games, Kilah Nixon sat out 14 games and Chelsea Frazier sat out 16 games due to injuries.

This season, the Lady Tigers are looking for their second MEAC title as the team is an experienced team with eight seniors after not losing a senior from last year’s team. Senior Kenyata Hendrix returns for her senior season and last season, she set a single-season school record in the Division I era with 62 made 3-pointers and led the team with 12.6 points per game, which ranked eighth in the conference. The Carrollton, Ga., native also led the team with 123 made field goals and averaged 3.5 rebounds per game. Also returning for her senior season is center Tiyonda Davis, who set the school record in rebounds with 708 career rebounds in the Division I era. The Athens, Ga., native led the team last season with 8.5 rebounds per game, which ranked fourth in the MEAC, and with 75 blocks, which ranked second in school history for a single season, and was named to the All-MEAC Third Team. Senior forward Jeremica Edwards returns for her second season at Savannah State and was second on the team with 46.2 field goal percentage and with 6.9 points per game and averaged 4.3 rebounds per game. The Lady Tigers return three other seniors of guard Rhianna Warren (6.7 ppg), guard Taylor-Ashley Shaw (3.9 rbp), center Caprisha Treadwell (2.8 rbg).

Savannah State welcomes two newcomers this season with Lauren “Gabby” Moss from Georgia State University and Jessica Satterwhite from Wayhampton HS in Hampton, S.C. Head coach Cedric Baker enters his 24th year as a head coach and his 14th year at Savannah State. The Voorhees graduate has the most NCAA Division I wins (142) in school history. The non-conference schedule is a very tough one for the Lady Tigers as SSU faces six teams that made the National Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament with Seton Hall University, Alabama State University, Jacksonville University, Auburn University, University of Washington and hosting the University of South Carolina. The Lady Tigers face five teams in a row that made the postseason with at Auburn, at Washington, South Carolina, at Florida Gulf Coast and Bethune-Cookman. FGCU and B-CU both made the Women’s National Invitational Tournament.

MEET THE coaches

Cedric Baker enters his 14th season as head women’s basketball coach at Savannah State University and enters his 24th year of head coaching. He was named head coach at Savannah State on July 30, 2003. Since coming to Savannah State, Baker has gradually improved the women’s basketball program. Last season, however, the Lady Tigers went 10-18 overall and 7-9 in conference play and fell to South Carolina State in the first round of the MEAC Tournament. In the 2014-15 season, SSU went 21-11 overall and 13-3 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference; all records were the best in the program’s Division I era (since 2002-03) and the best MEAC record since its first year of competition in 2011-12. The Lady Tigers won the 2015 MEAC Tournament Championship for the first time in school history and received its first bid into the National Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament.

In the 2013-14 season SSU went 19-14 overall, 10-6 in the MEAC, and 10-2 in Tiger Arena; all records were the best in the program’s Division I era (since 2002-03). It was also the best MEAC record the programs had since its first year of competition in 201112. The Lady Tigers under Baker made history in the 2014 MEAC Tournament with wins over Morgan State and Florida A&M. They were the first basketball team in the school’s history to make the semifinals of the MEAC Tournament. Prior to that, the 2006-07 team earned a spot on the Division I most improved list, compiled by the NCAA, with a 7.5 game improvement. Their winning percentage also increased to .413 in 2006-07 from .142 in 2005-06. The team earned a .577 winning percentage in 2010-11. During his tenure at Savannah State University, Baker has helped guide the Lady Tigers to some of the most significant wins in the history of the program. Those wins came against opponents from various Division I conferences, including: University of Florida (Southeastern Conference), The University of Texas San Antonio (Conference USA), Troy (Sun Belt), Charleston Southern (Big South), Longwood (Big South), East Carolina (Conference USA), Louisiana-Lafayette (Sun-Belt), Georgia Southern (Southern Conference), Tennessee St. (OVC), and Mercer (Atlantic Sun). Baker has also proved successful in the HBCU arena, recording wins over Alabama State, Bethune-Cookman, Maryland Eastern Shore, Howard, Florida A&M, Norfolk State, Delaware State, North Carolina Central, South Carolina State, Morgan State, and SIAC champion Fort Valley State. In the 2013-14 season, Baker eclipsed 300 career wins and broke 100 Savannah State NCAA Division I wins, etching himself into the record books with the most NCAA Division I wins (132) in school history. Baker comes to SSU from Benedict College where he served as head women’s basketball coach and guided the program to a 55-29 overall record during his tenure. In 2003, his team finished third in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Eastern Division with a 19-9 record. He led the team to back-to-back Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (EIAC) championships in 2001 and 2002, and was named EIAC Coach of the Year in 2002. Prior to his coaching position at Benedict, He served as head coach of the Voorhees College women’s basketball team where he compiled a 139-86 record during his seven years at the program’s helm. His team earned four EIAC championships and three NAIA Division I National tournament appearances. In 2000, his team compiled a record of 24-4, earning him an at-large berth into the NAIA Division I basketball tournament. The team was ranked number 16 in the NAIA Division I top 25 final poll and was the EIAC conference champions with a record of 12-0. Baker graduated from Voorhees College in 1990, earning a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and applied sciences. PRACTICES: All practices, as general rule, are open to the media; and as a courtesy, please contact the Media Relations Office before any interviews are conducted and for practice times.
