ail based ‘Mass Rapid Transit System’ has been widely accepted as a solution for most of the traffic and environ mental pollution related problems which major cities throughout the world are facing now. Metro rail construction activities are being undertaken in a big way in India, the existing metro rail network of the city of Kolkata and Delhi are being expanded, while it is under various stages of construction in cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai and Hyderabad and in Metro

METRO RAIL TODAY AUGUST 2022 33WWW.METRORAILTODAY.COM FEATURED STORY

Access and stops, the end of stations By 2035, the station mall will be firmly established as a cornerstone of the metropolitan area The growth of this model will mark an even more radical step than the creation of multi service areas Underground space will have been transformed following the example of 63,000 sites in Tokyo (of which 40% is connected to the metro) and the famous Montreal RESO, extending over 32 kilometres of tunnel In Paris, the Hôtel de Ville metro station has set an example by offering direct access to the BHV department store in Rue de Rivoli. The metro

Passengers will not mind lingering in stations featuring retailers and cultural amenities Some of these stations will be turned into multi service hubs, featuring libraries, exhibitions, and cultural offerings. Others will be converted into art galleries, laid out like the Stockholm metro to cater to travellers’ physical and psychological comfort Stations that are multimodal hubs will become the norm They will ease connections between metros and other means of transport, both vertical (lifts, flying taxis) and horizontal All hubs will offer parking space for human powered and electric bikes. Traffic management systems will control these exchange nodes, coordinating the various transport fleets Bio-inspired stations, to mark a new era 2035 will be the start of a new era The ecological and energy transition, oft announced, obstructed or delayed, will have finally greened our towns The metro station will become a symbol of the decarbonised paradigm and the circular economy. Designed as a town within the town, it illustrates the ‘cradle to cradle’ process All materials are recycled and recyclable, and even the functions of the station can be modified in the long term The station will become the launchpad for the innovative town, booting the new green metro further upstairs It will contribute to the power saving effort for the line, using the energy recovered by regenerative braking to power its activity.

By 2035, underground stations will look completely different Traditional turnstiles will have disappeared Personalised signage will be everywhere, using real time connectivity More accurate information about the density of passengers in trains, along with suggestions for alternative routes, will improve the management of traffic Passengers will not be so frightened of succumbing to thrombosis during the rush hour. Accessibility for persons of reduced mobility will improve, with special ramps, reserved lanes and above all, better laid out trains

Now stations will combine aesthetics, technical quality and high green ambitions Zero waste will be an integral part of its design and operation Vegetation will no longer be used as greenwash, but it will offer a shared access to biodiversity in new areas Bio inspired stations will also use optimised natural ventilation, to resolve the sensitive problem of particles in stations, and their repercussions on people’s health Good collective hygiene will be a high priority requirement. De materialised access controls and automated door opening on trains will reduce tactile interaction. Antibacterial materials will be specified in building standards Bio inspired stations will be linked to the digital era The digital footprint of services will be factored into the carbon neutrality calculation Will there be enough political determination to back such an ambitious transformation?

The rapid pace of technological, environmental and demographic change is leading to some major technological innovations in the world of metro. The increase in urbanisation will place a higher demand on infrastructure, and therefore Rail and Metro transportation will play the vital role The metro is destined to remain a pillar of urban mobility As a quick and practical mode of transport, it is the best option for serving the development of large conurbations, particularly to meet the challenges of climate change Public transport powered by electricity is the most obvious way of reducing the greenhouse gas and particle emissions generated by traffic congestion Its underlying principles correspond to the main objective of sustainable development Making the metro attractive, now and in the future, will rely heavily on improving access, signage and information systems New technology will play an important role and will streamline travellers’ journeys Likewise, with more efficient operating and maintenance, the equipment is becoming increasingly available. But the metro is not just a means of transport. It is also a space that embodies the town, expressing part of its identity Stations evolving at the pace of urban evolution and the changing rhythm of life could change the face, and even the very definition of the metro From station to multimodal transport hub

1. Digital revolution Rail is undergoing a digital revolution with the Internet of Things (IoT) enabling on board sensors to deliver real time analysis and monitoring, spot problems before they cause delays, automate maintenance and ensure the train’s location is always 100% accurate.

And so, just recently, the city of Kolkata launched enormous construction projects to make its East to West metro corridor under the Hooghly river bed On the surface, indeed, the ground did not have the required conditions for the extension of the line starting with the lack of space one can imagine in a city with a population of 14 million people. In total, the underground section should run along 10km, with 520m under the river itself This is a first for the country, and likely to be commissioned in the next year

The tracks themselves are seeing changes, new steel developments have improved strength to weight ratios matching even the best titanium alloys and materials like graphene help make materials that are longer lasting, more resilient to extreme weather and better for the environment.

4. Virtual reality

Whilst high above the tracks, drones are already in use in identifying problems, assisting maintenance workers and in providing additional security by offering a view of trespassers or other threats

Copenhagen and Dubai are just two metros that operate driverless trains and automation is increasingly the choice for new networks Why? A driver free network can deliver a deliver a more predictable network, maximise capacity when many metro systems are struggling to match demand and by removing the element of human error enhance safety and security Environmental concerns, fears over energy security and the lowering costs of implementation mean that rail is looking at new forms of power.

6. Alternative energy sources

The number of accesses to a single place will question the very concept of the station Once again, this prospect will raise the major topic of financial investments Such a project will change the role of underground urban space, independently from the metro to which it owes its existence Will travellers adapt to it?

Virtual reality is something making a lot of headlines at the moment and is already in use with industry giant Bombardier, including it in their manufacturing process Overcoming the challenges of cost and time, VR manufacture creates a 3 D model of a product, tests its efficiency virtually and then brings it to market more quickly and economically.

Urbanization, rapid population growth and climate change concerns are now seeing even regions previously resistant to investing in rail and metro, for example the Middle East, embracing its advantages These pressures coupled with dynamic innovations like the six listed are making public transport both sustainable and competitive and giving rail and metro a bright and exciting future

Also, what we take for granted connecting point A to point B transparently sometimes conceals a true headache for yesterday and today’s engineers

An area of increasing interest is the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as an alternative to diesel to power trains Already being tested by some railways its advantages are that it offers a competitive price, and lower carbon emissions plus an established regulatory structure when compared to its fossil and renewable fuel rivals.

5. Driverless trains

Infrastructures pushing back the impossible Except for the cities that recently came out of the ground (on the scale of industrial civilisation at least), metros around the world were built within the existing urban landscape, which presented innumerable challenges for the engineers in charge of the infrastructure

moulds itself to match the town it serves The traditional barriers between urban and transport areas will be abolished. Travellers will choose between walking along underground corridors and taking the metro, according to how much time they have to spare

2. New steel developments

3. Drones for identifying problems

The biggest innovations in Metro Rail

Moreover, the electrical load of an underground station is about ten times more than that required for an elevated station In order to accommodate these equipment and systems, the length of the station box for a six coach platform length of 135m to 140 m is taken as 240 m to 265 m Civil cost of an underground station can be reduced by reducing station box size After discussion with metro officials, it is concluded that there is ample scope of reduction in station box length by way of space optimisation and relocation of equipment and service rooms Chennai metro has constructed one underground station of six coach platform length in station box of 150 m length by optimising the utility and service rooms, relocating the machinery and plant, changing orientation of TVS etc.

Officials of other metros were also in agreement with the idea of reducing the station box length to about 200 m to 190 m or even less By doing so, there will be considerable reduction in the civil cost of the underground station due to reduction cost of earth work, concreting and diaphragm wall With the reduction in length of the station box, there will be a corresponding increase in tunnel length. However, there should be an overall reduction in cost as cost per meter of tunnelling is less than cost per meter of station box

excluding viaduct (Civil work): Station is the main activity centre of the metro system which holds a major share in total project cost

Elevated station (E&M work including lift and escalator): Electrical and Mechanical System at Elevated Stations are broadly divided into three subsystems namely, Electrical System, Fire Alarm, Detection & suppression System and VAC System

Between the ground of the station and this embankment, despite the pylons, there is emptiness Who would think of this during their daily commute? In recent construction, like the metro in Dubai, other structural findings have been put in place Rather than turning to metallic structures and rivets for the overground parts, like you can see in New York, Paris and London, prefabricated U shaped concrete viaducts have been put in place The concrete opens the way for more bold and modern architecture that is better integrated in the urban landscape, and limits the ground use (use of monopiles as opposed to pairs of pillars). Braking is producing. Station ElevatedBuildingsStation

The requirement of civil structure for three types of elevated station is more or less the same The difference is in the requirement of signalling, point and crossing. The size of the platform (length x width) also varies from metro to metro Station layout, simple Entry/Exit and station interior and inter station distance become extremely important from cost point of view The average inter station distance in the Indian metro system varies from 1 km to about 1 45 km Station structure is generally of two level viz concourse level and platform level The civil cost of a station can be reduced by space optimisation and value engineering. Station rooftop is also utilised for installation of solar panels

Electrical and mechanical items, lift and escalator, auxiliary substation, DG set, Automatic Fare Collection System (AFC), Platform Screen Doors (PSD), Telecommunication system etc are installed at stations It is seen that three types of elevated stations viz type A, B and C have been considered in the cost estimates in the DPRs

The components of electrical systems at elevated stations are Low Voltage(LV) panels, distribution boards, cables and cable containments, wiring and conduiting, lighting systems, earthing system and UPS etc DG Sets are used to supply power to Essential Loads in case of failure of Power Supply at the station In addition, Lifts and escalators are also provided at each station for the convenience of passengers It is observed that the cost of lifts and escalators are separately provisioned in DPRs of some projects.

Generally, four lifts and four escalators are provided at each elevated station Underground station (Civil work): The requirement of electrical and electromechanical equipment of underground stations is different from those for elevated stations Additional space is required for installation of the Environmental Control System (ECS) and Tunnel Ventilation System (TVS)

“ LEADERS OPINION METRO RAIL TODAY AUGUST 202238 WWW.METRORAILTODAY.COM

He said he hopes the Delhi Metro will reach the pre COVID ridership by the end of December. “During the initial phase of the pandemic, people got used to shopping online and this trend continues So, this factor too has affected the ridership as fewer people are going to markets to shop,” he added The Yellow Line still accounts for the largest share of ridership at 28.13%, followed by the Blue Line at 22%, according to data shared by officials.

The DMRC’s phase IV project, work on which began in December 2019, has also been impacted by the pandemic, officials said Officials said the Majlis Park Maujpur corridor of the phase IV project is expected to be completed “on schedule” by November 2024. However, timelines for the other two lines may be reviewed owing to constraints imposed by the pandemic.

Asked if he saw any cost escalation due to the pandemic, Mr Kumar said he did not see any major cost overrun due to the timelines of the phase IV project but timelines might be impacted due to the pandemic ***

Vikas Kumar, Managing Director Delhi Metro Rail Corporation

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) currently is undertaking construction work on 65.2 km of three priority corridors spanning 45 stations under the project Janakpuri West R K Ashram Marg (28.92 km) and Majlis Park Maujpur (12 55 km), which are extensions of the already operational Magenta Line and Pink Lines respectively, and Tughalakabad Aerocity (23.62 km) that is being built as ‘Silver Line’ to connect Violet and Airport Lines

There has been a gradual rise in the Delhi Metro’s average daily ridership over the last three months due to the reopening of schools and organisations following COVID-induced closures.

Delhi Metro’s Managing Director Vikas Kumar said that several metros across the globe have seen a reduction of about 20% in their ridership due to the COVID 19 pandemic There has been a gradual rise in the Delhi Metro’s average daily ridership over the last three months due to the reopening of schools and organisations following COVID induced closures. For the Delhi Metro, the average daily ridership in July stood at 42 64 lakh The ridership figures for June and May were 41 90 lakh and 39 48 lakh, respectively, suggesting that there has been a gradual increase, he said The pre COVID ridership (journeys or line utilisation) was about 60 lakh. The DMRC uses the metric of journey or line utilisation, which is calculated by the number of corridors passengers use to reach their destination Mr Kumar said the reopening of schools and several organisations operating in the hybrid mode (combining work from office and home) have led to an improvement in ridership figures in the past few weeks

5G: Built for Rail COVID 19 related changes to consumer behaviour have accelerated the need for 5G Transport authorities are under increased pressure to do more with less, facing drastic declines in passenger numbers and subsequent revenue losses Rebuilding public trust and confidence in rail systems’ safety won’t be easy but is crucial to restoring profitability. 5G offers mission critical capabilities that will T How 5G will transform Rail Transport?

5G will cover a wide range of use cases and related applications These uses include internet of things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, augmented and virtual reality (AR and VR) and edge computing. While these technologies exist today, the networks currently supporting them constrain their full potential

he consumer messaging around 5G is well known: it will deliver better, more immersive experiences than previous generations while simultaneously enabling new services and capabilities However, 5G can offer much more than this It is a revolutionary technology that enables networks to perform at scale, adapt at pace and unlock new revenue streams It will help transform transport, health, agriculture, manufacturing, entertainment, mining and other industries. Its combination of speed and responsiveness while seamlessly connecting people, machinery and automated processes will provide solutions to some of society’s most compelling challenges

Bringing these onto a single, unified network will generate economies of scale and significant ‘network effects’ that will amplify their value and utility The 5G promise

These requirements are part of the 5G standard, meaning it’s railway ready from day one Better yet, many of the legacy 2G systems and 5G networks often share the same frequency bands, making upgrades far less disruptive than with previous generations. FRMCS offers a roadmap and upgrade path for public operators or private networks Many railways have their own private 2G, GSM R networks and it provides them with a seamless upgrade path to roll out 5G

5G: Railway requirements are built in 5G offers a seamless upgrade path from existing global systems for mobile communications railway (GSM R) wireless services for railway operators. GSM R is a version of the 2G standard with additional requirements to make it suitable for railway systems For almost three decades it has formed the backbone of railways’ wireless networks But it’s out of date, and a new standard is required Industry bodies abandoned work on a 4G based standard called LTR as 5G became imminent. Instead, work started on the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS), a set of railway specific requirements for 5G including latency, bandwidth, security and safety

Operators can deploy new 5G systems alongside their 2G equivalents and switch over when they’re ready There’s no need to ‘forklift’ out old systems or manage massive power network buildouts and hard cut overs. With 5G networks in place, operators will find they can connect seamlessly to other 5G devices These include remote sensors on bridges, weather stations and traffic cameras These connections will enable improved situational awareness and make it possible to anticipate maintenance needs and traffic surges, and adjust service frequencies and arrival times.

On an operational level, 5G delivers efficiency, cost, productivity and security benefits. It enables technicians and operators to monitor railway networks in real time It also allows analysis of various systems related to power, passenger flows, facilities such as lifts and escalators, ticketing, signalling, staff and contractor management, and more Unlike other generational upgrades, 5G isn’t just about providing passengers with better download speeds and streaming while on board. Critically, it enables innovations that will restore public trust in mass transit, improve profitability and even create new revenue streams These capabilities mostly revolve around real time data feeds to provide service and rail network updates They also include more pertinent safety related information such as monitoring mask wearing, social distancing and on train seating density. Other adjacent innovations would enable passengers to connect to services outside the rail network Such connections allow multimodal travel coordination and scheduling, even including online shopping and services

Coordinating click and collect groceries, dry cleaning pickups or takeaway food orders etc will help make the daily commute fast, convenient and time saving

Thus, the question for operators is no longer whether they should upgrade their networks to 5G it’s when

Finally, 5G wireless makes edge computing viable for transit operators Edge computing decentralises servers and data centres to improve performance With fast, low latency 5G connections, moving trains will transmit data as they pass a station or platform These data transfers will keep essential systems updated and offer passengers fast and seamless streaming and connectivity facilitate this task

5G offers significant improvements to latency, concurrent connection numbers, session transfer speed and reliability, and power consumption. These improvements make 5G ideally suited to connecting IoT sensors and devices

Currently, most transport systems worldwide are using or are upgrading to wireless control systems such as communications based train control (CBTC), positive train control (PTC) and the European train control system (ETCS) Most of these systems still rely on cellular or Wi Fi networks designed in the 1990s They’re proven technologies, but they can’t scale to support modern applications and use cases

The Connectivity outlook report 2020 shows that the benefits of advanced technology are strongly desired, tellingly 85% of rail users are interested in 5G, and 83% support their city investing in a 5G network. 95% of rail users would be more likely to use the rail network in their city if technology driven solutions were implemented.

One result is that transport operators often install multiple different systems to handle the various safety, operational and passenger functions. These include voice, signalling, condition monitoring, closed circuit TV (CCTV), heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) monitoring and passenger Wi Fi systems Installing a single wireless infrastructure such as 5G to manage all these functions simultaeneously, eliminates incompatibilities and maximises interoperability between systems

• Connected sensors which can monitor rail networks

• ‘Predictive maintenance’ systems which monitor the health, efficiency and safety of rail vehicles These priorities reflect the public’s growing awareness that smart, data driven systems can enhance their travelling experience and make their rail networks more efficient 5G wireless, edge computing and other advanced technologies will enhance these systems.

Stations of the future will help passengers feel safe and connected They and the data networks they run on facilitate the mobile, distributed modes of work we’re adopting in response to the COVID 19 pandemic Biometric ticket gates, information kiosks, live service apps, connected CCTV cameras and pervasive IoT devices will create an environment without physical ticket barriers. Navigation information to help travellers with accessibility requirements will transform stations into free flowing and data rich environments Real time data will stream to mobile apps, AR or even VR devices, headphones and smart glasses

Station infrastructure will connect to low cost wireless networks for real time condition monitoring and predictive analytics. Elevators, escalators, HVAC systems, passenger announcements and information screens, and ticketing systems will share data and allow operators to adjust and optimise services in real time Crucially, the tipping point for 5G is coming In 2021 we will see greater device uptake by consumers By 2022, travellers will expect continuous 5G connectivity throughout their journeys

Transport authorities that engage early with 5G will position themselves to roll out services, rebuild customer trust and restore lost revenue streams faster than those who fall behind. It’s not merely a matter of having ‘the best’ new technology; instead, it’s a matter of committing to efficient operations, improved safety and best in class customer relationships These are the fundamentals of any successful business, making a commitment to 5G a business positive, revenue restoring, customer centric ‘must’

• Warnings about out of order escalators, elevators and other disability access options

5G and edge computing: an ideal combination for rail networks One of 5G’s most promising enablers is the combination of ubiquitous connectivity with edge computing Edge computing is a distributed network topology that uses localised infrastructure rather than centralised storage and 5G: Enabling the stations of the future 5G makes possible the station of the future, where connected services combine to create a seamless travel experience.

TECHNOLOGY TALK METRO RAIL TODAY AUGUST 202242 WWW.METRORAILTODAY.COM

The public understands these benefits too

The Connectivity outlook report 2020 asked rail users to prioritise various connected systems Their top three responses were: Their improved performance will create new opportunities to share information, improving operational efficiency and customer experience.

While most network providers’ 5G deployments have focused on adding more network capacity, transit authorities are beginning to realise its potential to enable new operational solutions.

Public transport is a critical part of a city’s prosperity and its citizens’ wellbeing Transport authorities are responding by evolving their offerings beyond getting people from ‘A to B’

Thus, transit authorities must design their networks to accommodate future demands as well as current needs Designing with the future in mind will deliver the level of service demanded by consumers today and provide foundational network infrastructure for new and emerging services and applications.

Integration and opportunity

Currently, most operators use a separate car for track inspection By combining 5G and edge computing, every train can become a track inspection vehicle, with connected sensors generating high volumes of data in real time In turn, this data allows for more granular analytics and a better understanding of how different parts of the physical network respond to use.

This decentralised approach is well suited to rail networks with their wide geographic distributions and the requirement to connect moving trains With 5G and edge computing, operators won’t need expensive servers installed onboard their rolling stock to handle critical applications.

Neutral hosts: shaping connectivity’s future Though 5G and edge computing are powerful when combined, deploying both at scale requires complex and dense networks, including more antennas, fibre, power, wireless cells, servers and data centres The challenge is ensuring that these networks are designed, deployed and managed effectively. In the rail transport context, trackside infrastructure upgrades can provide the transmission and backhaul capacity needed to deliver high quality telecommunications services that fit today’s needs and are ready for tomorrow’s

One solution to these technical and financial challenges is to adopt the neutral host model A Neutral Host Network (NHN) is a third party owned cellular network that provides wholesale mobile coverage solutions to MNOs or other communications service providers (CSPs) The NHN model is flexible, and in addition to upgrading, building and owning networks, neutral host providers can partner with transit authorities to build jointly owned private networks This flexibility makes it easier for transit authorities to evolve their services and shield partner organisations from design, operational and other complexities, such as multi operator support, edge core integration and network optimisation

Respondents in the Connectivity outlook report 2020 nominated ‘transport and mobility’ as the top ranked service they believed could be improved with better technology and connectivity Similarly, 86% of rail users agreed that an ‘evolved’ rail network that allowed them to work effectively as they travelled would benefit them

The capital and operational investment required for these networks are significant In most cases, network ownership and management are not feasible for a single Mobile Network Operator (MNO) to absorb, especially in an environment of increasing capital constraints.

The neutral host model can play a significant role as cities learn how to manage COVID 19 and prepare for future public health concerns. Beyond ‘stations of the future’, we must build ‘cities of the future’ These cities will feature pervasive connectivity with smart devices gathering and sharing data in real time NHN providers bring such ambitions within reach by building the infrastructure and technology backbone required

*** compute It enhances network performance by locating data and applications closer to the endpoints they serve Local processing maximises 5G’s capabilities, including improvements to latency, concurrent connection numbers, session transfer speed and reliability, security and power consumption.

For transit authorities and MNOs, accessing a single, unified network infrastructure avoids the time, cost and potential service interruptions associated with each MNO installing their network hardware on platforms and trains.

From MNOs to transit operators and municipalities, there are many cases where neutral host models make good commercial sense Innovative technologies and shared infrastructure can enhance consumer, business and public safety connectivity By opening up areas that otherwise would be difficult to service and providing continuous, high quality connectivity we can ensure that today’s networks are ready for tomorrow’s demands.

. Responding to the public’s desire to be connected while travelling and feel safe and secure while in transit is the key to restoring ridership and revenue

These options represent various forms of network sharing that can enhance competition, improve utility for consumer and business mobile users, and enable government and municipal authorities to achieve their strategic, financial and other objectives

Track maintenance illustrates the potential benefits.

At present, around 991 Km of metro rail project is under construction/approval stage and around 1,040Km is in the proposal stage Given the strong order/proposal pipeline, the construction entities with presence in the metro rail segment are likely to witness strong growth

A sizeable share of metro rail projects are currently funded by multilateral agencies, which has helped in easing the financing burden on the Government and in speedy expansion of the project. The Metro Rail Policy in FY2017 helped boost the network, evident from the growth of nearly 4 times in the last six years

ICRA expects Rs 80,000 crore business potential for construction entities in the next five years India currently has operational metro network of 746 3km in 15 cities, which is expected to increase to 1,900 2,000 Km in next five years.

ICRA in its recent research report estimates that metro rail projects will generate Rs 800 billion of opportunities for construction companies over the next five years In India, 15 cities have operational metro networks of about 746 km (many of which are undertaking network expansion), while Metro rail projects offer Rs 80,000 crore

another seven cities of about 640 km have under implementation metro projects. This apart, 1,400 km of metro rail projects worth Rs 2 trillion are in the approval/proposal stage; of which a 352 km of new metro network has been approved, with the balance being in the proposal stage Civil construction forms 35 45% of the overall development cost of the metro rail project. It is followed by rolling stock (~25 30% of project cost) and then systems work (~15 20% of project cost).

“Competitive intensity is expected to remain moderate in the near to medium term, with the incumbents expected to benefit the most Given that majority of the orders are funded by multilateral agencies as well as Central Government allocations, the cash conversion cycle of the industry participants will remain comfortable,” Gupta added Currently, metro rail projects of about 1,400 km worth Rs 2,00,000 crore are under approval/proposal stage Based on the projects currently under approval/proposal stage, it will translate into ~Rs.80,000 crore business opportunity for the civil construction industry.

Giving more insights on this, Mr Abhishek Gupta, Sector Head & Assistant Vice President, Corporate Ratings, ICRA, says: “Given the Government’s thrust for infrastructure development, the metro rail network is likely to witness 2.7 times expansion in the next five years. Typically, the metro rail development cost ranges between Rs. 280-320 crore/km for elevated metro and the cost could be much higher in the case of an underground metro network.

Civil construction forms ~35% 45% of the overall cost. Given the large size of the metro projects, this is likely to offer sizeable opportunities for construction companies over the next five years.”

Unlike road segment, which has witnessed steep competition in recent times with most of the bids in EPC segment at discount, the metro rail segment has continued to witness relatively better pricing/bidding discipline amongst participants Almost 58% of the metro rail projects in the last 15 months were awarded at premium over the base price, with 14% of projects awarded at a premium of over 20%. ICRA expects competitive intensity to remain moderate with incumbents likely to be the key beneficiaries Given most of the orders are backed by multilateral agencies as Central Government funding, the receivable cycle of industry participants is also expected to remain under control as well.
