The January Edition of Urban Transport Infrastructure brings glimpses of the year 2021 in our Special Series Year Ender-2021. COVID-19 pandemic has been the biggest story of the year and India has seen the fight back against the COVID-19 pandemic under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India's urban transport infrastructure gained additional push with metro rail projects which certainly emerged as one of the finest innovations of Indian infrastructure sector. One metro project i.e. Bangalore Metro Rail Project Phase 2A & 2B of length 58.19 km at the completion cost of Rs 14,788 Cr has been sanctioned in June, 2021. About 40 km of metro rail lines have been commissioned in the cities of Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Nagpur and Kanpur. A total of 34 Metro Rail and Rapid Rail projects with a total length of 1,230 km is under implementation phase. The ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has also received proposal for additional 16 projects for a stretch of 638 kilometers in eight states and UTs including Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Maharashtra. Under Make-in-India initiatives, the Ministry, in January, 2021, has issued a list of items where public procurement shall be done only from local suppliers. With driverless train operation on 94 km on Delhi Metro’s network, India is at 4th position in the elite league of world’s metro systems which operate drives less trains. The Ministry of Railways and Ministry of Road Transport & Highways have marked 2021 as “Year of Major Transformation’ with zero passenger fatalities for Indian Railways. The 2021 witnessed an unprecedented growth in development of infrastructure, innovation, capacity expansion of network, freight diversification and redevelopment of Gandhinagar Capital (WR) & Rani Kamlapati Station (WCR). Indian Railways has electrified over 45,000 RKM till December 2021. In this edition, we have covered interview of highly experienced leaders in the Rail & Metro industry - Mr. Kumar Keshav, Managing Director, Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited. I wish our readers and all supporter a very happy & prosperous new year 2022. Stay Safe and Stay Happy! Mamta Shah Managing Editor editor@urbantransportnews.com
