A mutual encounter sparked the formation of AIRWAYS. AIRWAYS, formed and based in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, England with members hailing from there, Birmingham (West Midlands, England), and Chicago, Illinois, showcases the talent of Jake Daniels (vocals, guitar), Alex Ruggiero (guitar), Jamie Reynolds (bass), and Brian Moroney (drums). They self-released their debut single, “Ghost Town,” on February 2, 2016, followed by “One Foot,” on July 8, 2016. This year, they put out “Reckless Tongue,” on March 17, 2017, which led to the release of their debut EP, Starting to Spin, on May 19, 2017, featuring tracks such as “White Noise Boys” and “Mate.” They have shared the stage with various acts, including Nothing But Thieves, The Hunna, and Missio. They also performed at this past year’s SXSW. They recently wrapped up a massive U.S. tour with Nothing But Thieves and Missio, and made a stop at Gramercy Theatre in New York City on November 1, 2017. Just before the show, the band generously took some time to chat about their first instruments, the process of creating their debut 3 EP, and what toppings the “AIRWAYS” pizza would feature.

What’s the story behind the formation of AIRWAYS? JAKE: I met Brian in America, in Los Angeles, at our manager’s house, and we were just kind of writing together. He was just like, “I’m going to move to England to your house and join your band.” We started that, and I’ve known Alex since I was little.

What was the first instrument (musical or non-musical) you started making music with? BRIAN: I’ve been playing buckets for a while, but I played piano first. ALEX: I used to have a penny whistle when I was younger. JAKE: I used to just play my vocal chords.

You released your debut EP, Starting to Spin, in May 2017. What was the process of writing, recording, and producing it? JAKE: It was a long process. It took ages to get to the point we felt ready to release something. We had done “Ghost Town” prior, but that was the beginning of our sound. By that point, we knew what we wanted to sound like. It then came to a point we went into the studio, put it all down, and it was done. BRIAN: It still took another few months to plan out what we were going to do with it. We had the songs, released it in May, and it’s been a fruitful six months.

Which song (released or unreleased) are you most proud of? BRIAN: I’m proud of all of them. JAKE: I like “Mate” the most. They’re all babies of ours. BRIAN: There’s a lot of new music that we’re in love with.

What happens before you go onstage? Is there an AIRWAYS pre-show ritual? ALEX: Jake goes somewhere, and we’re like, “Oh god, where has Jake gone?” BRIAN: We used to have more of a ritual, but recently, it’s been, “See you up there.” A few drinks, push-ups, the basics.

Out of all your songs, my favorite is “Ghost Town.” Can you touch on the inspiration and creation of that particular one? JAKE: That was about everyone being on their phones, including myself. It’s like, “Why is no one looking forward?” We went into the studio with our friend, Dom Craik, from Nothing But Thieves. We did it as a demo, and it was the one that stuck out for us. It got a lot of responses, and definitely helped us grow.

What’s your favorite restaurant and/or food in NYC? Any places back home in Peterborough, England? JAKE: Wagamama is the best place in Peterborough. They do great noodles there. BRIAN: There’s also Nando’s. We haven’t had much time to explore in NYC, but we are going to go later.

If there a pizza with the name “AIRWAYS,” what toppings would it have? It’d have anchovies, green pepper, pineapple, onions, olives, spinach, cheese, garlic, and garlic sauce.

What can listeners expect in terms of upcoming projects and/or releases? JAKE: More songs, and that’s about it. Just lots of content and songs.

What’s a question you have wanted to get asked in an interview, and what’s the response to it? Jake: My favorite question would be, “Who can do the most press-ups?” We’ll all then do a press-up contest.
