Beach Calling

NEW

A Devotional Journal for the Middle Years and Beyond —Missy Buchanan

Aging doesn’t take much effort—all you have to do is breathe. Aging faithfully is different. It requires intentional effort to stay focused on God as you make your way through a world of chaos and change. Many women dread aging and resist thinking about it. Yet God designed the human body to change over time, and growing older is part of God’s plan. How we handle the changes that accompany aging reveals much about our spiritual maturity. Beach Calling takes a fresh approach to aging. Missy Buchanan uses comforting imagery from the beach and ocean to engage readers in spiritual reflection. In this devotional journal for women, she guides readers to explore and embrace God’s plan for growing older. Each devotion focuses on a familiar aspect of beach life and offers a parallel lesson on aging. Each reading contains prompts that invite readers to capture their thoughts in the journaling space provided. Beach Calling helps women accept and prepare for life transitions, including how to navigate the challenges of loss and decline. This inspiring resource encourages readers to discover the hope and joy that faithful aging can bring. HARDCOVER WITH

I wrote Beach Calling for you, and I wrote it for me. Perhaps you are lucky enough to be reading this book on a pristine beach. But even if you are reading it at a cluttered kitchen table with a cup of lukewarm coffee, I hope the lyrical language of the sea will transport you to a beachside retreat and draw you gently into the deep water of each spiritual lesson. If you want to ponder what aging faithfully means, you will want to read this book. If you find accepting or acknowledging your own aging journey to be difficult, you desperately need to read this book. It’s time to kick off your flip-flops. Feel the sand between your toes. Let’s walk together toward the open sea. The beach is calling.

Culture bombards us with messages that aging is something to dread, something we must battle with daily. The thought of our independence slipping away is frightening, so we close our eyes and pretend that change is not happening. The truth is, aging is inescapable. But it is also God’s plan for us. When we faithfully embrace the changes that come as we grow older, we can live with greater joy. There are new gifts that await us in late life—new purposes to fulfill.

Over the span of my long life, I have learned many lessons. To be honest, I am learning them still. Out of the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina, I discovered not to prize possessions too highly. I grieved the loss of many special objects: the copper wall plaques we’d brought back from Japan; the china vase hand-painted by Larry’s aunt; our stereo and collection of old record albums; my organ. Even now, there are times when I suddenly think about an item only to realize it has been lost forever. I have also discovered what it is like to lose a loved one in a heartbeat. But through every loss, I am learning to loosen my grasp on things of this world and to cling to good memories and to God instead. —Lucimarian Roberts, My Story, My Song

Let Me Ask You a Question Conversations with Jesus— Matthew Croasmun

We often think of Jesus as someone with all the answers. But over and over in scripture, he asks questions, seeking to engage with people and being genuinely interested in their responses. Matthew Croasmun challenges readers to consider this book as an experiment—an opportunity to see whether God is real. He invites us to enter into conversation with Jesus by answering the questions Jesus asks in scripture. The goal is not to come up with what we think are the right answers but to respond honestly to Jesus’ questions.

If we have what we’re pretty sure is a “right answer” about who Jesus is and then Jesus does something that seems incompatible with our answer, our response should be to let Jesus transform our understanding of what was correct—not correct Jesus’ behavior to make it fit what we think we know. —Matthew Croasmun

Each chapter of this 6-week study contains 5 readings. Each reading follows this format:

µµ A Bible passage with a question Jesus asks in bold type µµ A short reflection designed to help you engage with Jesus’ question as he asked it in the Gospels and as he asks it of you now µµ Journaling space to continue the conversation with Jesus PAPERBACK – $9.99

What happens when you stop reading about God and open yourself to an ever-deepening relationship with God? In What We Need Is Here, Roger Owens calls you to return to 7 basics, or “givens,” of Christian spirituality: meditating on the Gospels, praying the Psalms, sitting with God in silence, receiving and responding to Jesus with the body, meeting Jesus in Holy Communion, finding Jesus at church, and spending time with the poor. Writing in an honest, accessible, and often humorous style, Owens shares insights from his own journey and the history of Christian spirituality. God calls each of us to joy. “Rejoice in the Lord always” (Phil. 4:4), Paul says. I keep nearby when I pray a picture of Saint Francis, who took Paul’s injunction quite literally. His feet are off the ground, his arms are extended to the sky as he jumps in freedom and joy. The picture portrays a man who worships with his body, who loves the creation, and who is not afraid to let the joy of the body show. —Roger Owens, What We Need Is Here

People in the later years of life face many changes—many not of their own choosing. Still Praying After All These Years offers 52 reassuring meditations to help readers realize that their lives still have meaning and that aging holds opportunities for spiritual growth. Each reading begins with a quote or question that Susan Scott received during her ministry with older adults. Topics include loneliness, the losses that accompany aging, how to make a difference, suffering, finding meaning and purpose at the end of life, experiencing wonder, and feeling God’s presence or absence. This book makes a lovely gift for older people; it will encourage them and make them feel less alone as they read about others who have walked a similar path. If you are a caregiver or minister to frail elderly people, this book will move you to empathize with the spiritual, emotional, and physical challenges your loved ones face.

Excerpt from Still Praying After All These Years

EXPECTING SMALL MIRACLES It’s a mystery to me why things are happening—why they sometimes go the opposite of what I expect. What brings me light in darkness is a small miracle. That’s when I don’t expect something good to happen and then it does. —William, age 84 Passage “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” —Hebrews 11:1 Perspective William realizes that having expectations does not give him control over what actually happens in his life. This awareness leads him to acknowledge the presence of mystery and wonder anew why things happen as they do. . . . In this later season of life, our hopes and expectations are sometimes disappointed. At such times, our faith in life’s goodness may be shaken. At other times, expecting nothing or anticipating the worst, we are pleasantly surprised by the small miracles that happen to meet our needs. While the world God created isn’t entirely our personal oyster, small miracles remind us that God often provides us with enough to survive and, sometimes, with enough to thrive. Practice Imagine that a “small miracle” is seeking you out. When it finds you, give thanks. Prayer Sustainer of all that is, give me faith that hopes in what I can and cannot see. Thank you for giving me life and for the small miracles that find me each day.

PRAYER

Dimensions of Prayer Cultivating a Relationship with God —Douglas V. Steere

Prayer can be wonderfully accessible to everyone. “In learning to pray, no laboratory is needed but a room, no apparatus but ourselves,” Douglas Steere writes. Aware of how easily we can be intimidated by complex methods, Steere suggests that we begin by simply acknowledging our dependence on God. Prayer comes as a response to a God who “besieges us with love,” he says. Among the topics covered are petition, confession, adoration, intercessory prayer, and how to cope with dry times in prayer. This easy-to-read book offers new “pray-ers” an engaging introduction to prayer while providing valuable wisdom for mature Christians. PAPERBACK – $8.99

A House of Prayer The Power of Praying in Community —Thomas R. Steagald

A House of Prayer begins with a personal story: a moment of isolation and spiritual distress that gives way to a deep sense of long-lasting connectedness and community. That movement from isolation to serenity by means of praying together, spiritually or physically, is the emphasis of this book. Steagald believes that praying together allows the church to become “one,” as Jesus intended, and the “body” the apostle Paul described. The author incorporates memoir, travelogue, reflection on scripture, church history, and psychology as he builds a compelling case for congregations to put more focus on praying as a community. Many of us rarely spend time listening in prayer, partly because we don’t place enough emphasis on listening. We find it difficult to focus our minds when we are silent. . . . I believe we feel uncomfortable with silence. We want to fill the quiet space with words and sound. And yet, as we read in First Kings, God is in the silence. There we can hear what God has to say to us. For me, listening to God in prayer is the true gift of prayer beads. . . . In the beginning, this style of prayer may seem awkward or uncomfortable. That is okay. If you stay with the practice, I can assure you that you will begin to feel calmer and realize a new way of connecting with God. —Kristen Vincent, A Bead and a Prayer

For Sabbath’s Sake Embracing Your Need for Rest, Worship, and Community —J. Dana Trent

Many Americans balk at the idea of setting aside a whole day for worship, rest, and time with those who matter most to them. Yet we long for more time to spend on what matters most—unrushed time to rest, reconnect with friends and loved ones, and deepen our relationship with God. An ancient spiritual practice exists that can help restore balance to our lives: the practice of keeping sabbath. But how exactly do we manage to build time for sabbath into our busy lives? Dana Trent explores this question in For Sabbath’s Sake. With humor and honesty, Trent reveals her own struggles with setting apart a day devoted to God, rest, and community. This book traces the rich history of sabbath, helps you find ways to overcome barriers to this spiritual practice, and suggests achievable ways to build sabbath into your life. PAPERBACK – $12.99

Gathered Together Creating Personal Liturgies for Healing and Transformation —Tilda Norberg

God wants us to be whole. One of the purposes of the church is to encourage wholeness. Needing to be something for everyone, however, corporate worship traditions may have lost a personal touch that members need. So how can the church honor a person’s profound experience of struggle, change, or celebration? Norberg offers more than two dozen custom liturgies she has designed and led to honor such occasions as finding a vocation, recovering from illness, giving up false hopes, and receiving first car keys. These liturgies are intimate, honest, and deeply transformative as a congregation of close friends participate with the celebrant in a service uniquely designed around their personal need. ADVENT

The Wondrous Mystery

NEW

An Upper Room Advent Reader —Compiled by Benjamin Howard AVAILABLE SEPTEMBER 2019

During Advent, we think about this wondrous mystery: God chose to become human and lived among us. The Savior of the world was born a vulnerable child. The Wondrous Mystery invites you to reflect on several paradoxes that comprise the Advent season: light and darkness, peace and strife, solitude and community, simplicity and complexity. This daily Advent reader incorporates meditations from Weavings: A Journal of the Christian Spiritual Life. Writers include Barbara Brown Taylor, Henri J. M. Nouwen, Wendell Berry, Sue Monk Kidd, Wendy M. Wright, and others. The meditations in this book challenge you to reflect on the new and wondrous mystery of God and the profound way that Jesus’ birth upends the world as we know it and signals the beginning of God’s kingdom. The glory of the Advent season is that it’s irrational. It shows us a glimpse of the way that God turns the world and our expectations upside down. In a season that we have increasingly filled with events and get-togethers and family and friends, God calls us to sit quietly and wait for the coming of the Lord. In a season filled with the longest, darkest nights, we are told to wait for the coming of the most beautiful light. In a season of death, we look forward to the birth of eternal life. Though we think of Advent in terms of the Christmas celebration, Advent itself is not a season of celebration. It is a time of waiting, a time when we challenge ourselves and confront ourselves during the deepest, darkest time of the year. It is only at the end of Advent, after weeks of searching our souls, that we celebrate birth and light and life. —Ben Howard, in the Introduction

Blue Christmas Devotions of Light in a Season of Darkness —Todd Outcalt

Advent and Christmas are often associated with joy, love, generosity, and unity. But for many people, this time of year magnifies loneliness, anxiety, grief, and despair. While others are enjoying celebrations with their friends and families, those who are hurting often feel more alone than ever. Through the honest devotions in Blue Christmas, readers will find their fears and realities named and brought into the light of God’s love. Outcalt invites us to sit with our experiences, acknowledge our losses, and remember Jesus’ promise: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” Blue Christmas reminds us that all our Christmases, even the darkest ones, can be filled with honesty and hope if we are willing to bring our deepest fears to God. Many people do not experience the Advent/Christmas season as a period of joy and light. For many—and perhaps for more of us than would care to admit it—this season transports our greatest fears, losses, realities, and shattered hopes into a time when most people are singing, socializing, and enjoying life to the fullest. We may feel even more lost, more abandoned, more lonely, and more afraid in this season—the season of light and love. So, from the outset, let it be known that this is an honest devotional. Here—in Blue Christmas—readers will find these fears and realities named and brought into the light so that we can confront them with grace and truth. Naming brings an understanding that gives us permission to sit with these experiences, to acknowledge what we have lost, and to honor the grace of Jesus who offers us the word, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” (Matt. 5:4). —Todd Outcalt, in the Introduction

LENT

Because of This I Rejoice Reading Philippians During Lent —Max O. Vincent

Many Christians view Lent as a season of self-sacrifice and discipline that sounds too much like a spiritual to-do list. Lenten disciplines can become the spiritual equivalent of New Year’s resolutions to lose weight, be healthier, or practice better money management. These promises are easily made and often quickly broken, leaving us feeling like we do not measure up to what we should be. In his letter to the Philippians, the apostle Paul joyfully turns to spiritual practices that draw him closer to God amid persecution and imprisonment. These practices keep Paul connected to a sense of God’s power and presence. Because of This I Rejoice is a 6-week study of Philippians that explores what Paul teaches about joyfully practicing spiritual disciplines. The intent of these disciplines is to help us focus less on ourselves and more on God. This Lenten study invites us to engage in the same spiritual practices as a way to grow closer to God and allow joy to flow through our lives.

HOW CAN TRYING A NEW SPIRITUAL PRACTICE HELP US FIND JOY? When I look at the way Paul describes the spiritual practices that sustain him in Philippians, I think he would say we often get the order wrong. It is not about committing to some spiritual practice to increase our joy, but joyfully engaging the practices. I think that’s because Paul is focused on the end and not the means. Paul has been seized by the Resurrection. Knowing the Resurrection, he is able to endure anything joyfully. So he joyfully practices prayer, hospitality, giving, etc., as ways to give thanks for what God has offered us in the Resurrection. I think of spiritual practices as being like running. When I started running, I could only go 1 or 2 miles. I felt good, but I knew my body could not endure going further. After just a few years of regular running, I look forward to long runs of 9-12 miles on the weekend. Similarly, for years I was not reading the scriptures daily, other than what I studied for sermons and Bible studies. About 7 years ago, I committed to reading the Bible first thing in the morning. I started at about 15 minutes a day. Some days it was hard to get out of bed, or I would jump to all the other things I wanted to do before reading the Bible. I kept at it, and now I spend about 45 minutes to an hour reading the scriptures in the morning. I look forward to it. Sometimes I even wake up early so I can get in a few extra minutes. —Max Vincent

A Lenten Journey with Protestant Prayer Beads —Kristen E. Vincent AVAILABLE OCTOBER 2019

As Christians, we often have the head knowledge that we are beloved—but deep in our hearts, do we truly believe it? In this 7-week Lenten study, you will follow biblical stories of Jesus’ experiences of God’s love. Kristen Vincent points out that because the Son of God was fully human, he had to mature to understand that he was beloved. Just as Jesus learned of his belovedness, we too can discover that we are deeply loved. Each week contains a scripture reading, a devotion, reflection questions, an optional prayer bead experience, and a listening meditation. The book includes a Leader’s Guide for small groups. It also includes Good Friday and Easter readings for individuals. PAPERBACK – $11.99

For most of my life I thought that God loved me. Intellectually, I could tell you that God loved me, but in my heart I didn’t believe it. Not really. I didn’t feel God’s love. I didn’t trust it. I didn’t feel worthy of it. My pain and childhood trauma led me to believe that God must not care much about me. . . . Many of us don’t believe at our core that we are God’s beloved. . . . Still, whether we believe it or not, we are God’s beloved. Down deep in our soul, we know this truth. But time, experience, culture, trauma, and other factors slowly cause us to disconnect from this truth and forget who we are. . . . . That’s why this journey is so critical. Our world is desperate to know it is beloved, but that will happen only one person at a time. In other words, this journey begins with you. And me. Once we know we are beloved, then we can help others recognize their belovedness. —Kristen Vincent, We Are Beloved

Did you know that fundraising can be a spiritual journey? For years, fundraisers for faith-based nonprofits have been inspired by Henri Nouwen’s words: “Fundraising is, first and foremost, a ministry.” In A Spirituality of Fundraising, Nouwen asserts that fundraising is more than an effort to support a common goal; it involves the calling and prayer for a common mission. In A Spirituality of Fundraising Workbook Edition, Nathan Ball provides a how-to guide to accompany Nouwen’s teachings on fundraising. The workbook edition includes 4 weeks of 5 short daily reflections, journaling prompts for each day, weekly prompts to help readers identify action steps, guidance for 4 small-group sessions, and the complete text of Nouwen’s best-selling A Spirituality of Fundraising. The workbook provides inspiration and practical tools for fundraisers—both professional and volunteer—whose ministries rely on donations.

With Henri and me as your guides, you are embarking upon a journey to embrace fundraising as a Spirit-filled opportunity to build friendships and community around a shared vision. Fundraising will take you deep inside yourself, where you will encounter beliefs, feelings, attitudes, and behaviors that will be simultaneously wonderful and terrible. . . . Therefore, a mindset of trust, curiosity, and adventure is imperative. This workbook edition is designed to help you do the inner work necessary to understand your relationship with money and to guide you through the first practical steps that must be taken by anyone who wants to raise money. —Nathan Ball, in the Introduction

An Age of Opportunity Intentional Ministry by, with, and for Older Adults —Richard H. Gentzler, Jr.

A companion to the author’s earlier book Designing an Older Adult Ministry, this book provides new information and outlines ways to develop and strengthen ministries by, with, and for older adults that will enhance the spiritual growth and well-being of people of all ages. The church is beginning to recognize that there are vast numbers of older people in its membership. It is becoming aware of its indebtedness to them for the leadership, support, service, and faith that has made today’s church possible. The church is uniquely positioned to help older adults respond to the challenges of aging; to see the tremendous potential in the lives of older adults for making the church and community better; and to assist older people as they experience new meaning and purpose in their later lives. As we traverse the culture shifts that we now face in the twenty-first century, Christ invites us to a broader vision of God and a much more diverse church than we could imagine before. The movement into what is emerging can feel chaotic and anxious. Not every emerging expression bears faithful witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ. In seeking discernment in these matters, we can benefit from seeking the insight and wisdom of spiritual friends who are mature, filled with the Holy Spirit, and who model the way of Jesus in their living. . . . The best spiritual companions for times like these are saints who do not fit well into anyone’s theological box and who usually defy labels such as conservative or liberal. Like Jesus, they transcend most of the artificial boundaries we use to ignore people. —Elaine A. Heath, God Unbound
