Spiritual Formation in a Digital World
Digital Resource Catalog Rough Draft A Digital Catalog for Online Resources from
God Meets Us Wherever We Are One thing is certain: we will not soon forget 2020 or the coronavirus pandemic that began in late December 2019 and spread across the globe, changing life as we knew it. As this catalog was in production, COVID is still spreading. Hundreds of thousands around the world have died from the virus. During the pandemic, our faith has been tested in ways none of us ever expected. The Upper Room program ministries The Walk to Emmaus, Face to Face, and The Academy for Spiritual Formation, events that nourish the spiritual lives of thousands of people around the globe, canceled all spring and summer events. Instead, staff of these ministries are working to connect with program leaders and participants via online platforms. Like you, we all had to drastically shift the way we do our work, our ministry, our worship, and our shopping. Hopefully we have learned some lessons during this difficult and tragic time. Some truths we can hang on to even in the midst of tragedy, grief, and uncertainty are that God is present with us, and God cares for all persons. As we all discover a new normal, The Upper Room wants to remind you that God meets us wherever we are. As the world is increasingly online, The Upper Room is here to provide resources to help you meet God on your phone, computer, or tablet; in your car; or just while you’re sitting on your couch. We are committed to provide resources to deepen your prayer life and help you grow spiritually as you try to navigate this digital world we live in.
Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there. If I take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me fast. —Psalm 139:7-10, NRSV

Prayer Wall Prayer is at the heart of The Upper Room. Through the years, our ministries have included books and magazines on prayer, events and experiences to encourage a deeper life of prayer, and a prayer ministry to connect those in need of prayer to hundreds of volunteers around the world. Now our intercessory prayer community has transitioned from phone connections to online platforms. People submit a need or praise on The Upper Room website (UpperRoom.org/Prayer) and choose whether to send it to prayer volunteers via email or post it on The Upper Room Prayer Wall. The Upper Room prayer community prays together—from anywhere, at any time.
Share your prayers. When you submit a prayer need or praise, know that others around the globe have committed to pray with you, and God has already heard your prayer. UpperRoom.org/Prayer “Where two or three are gathered in my name, I’m there with them.” —Matthew 18:20 (CEB)
Respond on the Prayer Wall. Get on your smartphone, tablet, or computer and let others know you are praying for and with them. • In your internet browser, search for “The Upper Room Prayer Wall” or visit UpperRoom.org/PrayerWall. You will see the most recent prayer requests on the screen. • Scroll through the prayer requests and select one you want to lift up in prayer. Click the appropriate response button below the prayer and enter your prayerful and encouraging words. While many prayer partners choose to respond only in spirit without making their response public, we encourage you to share your words so others can see.
Receive prayer requests via email. You can also sign up to be a prayer partner who receives weekly prayer requests via email from The Upper Room. Sign up to volunteer by visiting UpperRoom.org/Prayer. You can choose a day of the week and select the number of prayer requests you would like to receive on that day. “Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” —Galatians 6:2 (NRSV)

Online Learning The Upper Room eLearning website offers online courses featuring books and other resources from The Upper Room. Our eCourses offer an opportunity for participants to access all the content from the related book plus audio and video recordings designed to enhance the reading experience. These eCourses combine synchronous (available at a specific date and time) and asynchronous (available anytime and anywhere) learning. Most eCourses are self-paced and unguided—much like reading a book on your own, only with online space to share comments with others who are reading the same book. Specialty eCourses Specialty eCourses are guided, meaning an Upper Room staffperson or trained leader is present in the classroom to guide group discussion. We often host these specialty eCourses during Advent and Lent or other special occasions. Private Classrooms Most eCourses are available as private classrooms, meaning small groups or congregations have private access to an eCourse where only those with access will participate in discussion. These eCourses include all the same content as an Open Group classroom, but they are guided by a pastor or small-group leader. The Upper Room eCourses are ideal options for congregations with members unable to gather in groups due to quarantine, caregiving responsibilities, travel, or busy schedules. Participants can read the book chapters, view videos, and follow along with audio recordings of guided practice—all from any device (laptop, tablet, phone). With the exception of synchronous elements (like a live guided practice session or an introductory webinar) included in a particular eCourse, eCourses are self-paced and can be completed as a participant is able. Prices vary per course. Private eCourse classrooms are available for groups of five or more and are usually offered at a price discounted from the individual participant fee. To arrange a private classroom, email UReLearning@UpperRoom.org. The technology used for The Upper Room eLearning is designed to be as easy to use as possible for participants. We are happy to offer basic guidance to anyone learning to navigate the registration process and the online classroom.

Which Way, Lord?
Exploring Life’s Purpose in the Journeys of Paul Rob Fuquay eCOURSE $19.00 Many of us wonder whether we are living the purposeful life God intends for each of us. Which Way, Lord? helps us consider that big question. The Damascus road experience was not the only event that sent the apostle Paul on his quest. Throughout Paul’s life his traditions, education, travels, and challenges shaped him for ministry. When he started, he had no idea how God’s plan for him would take shape. This eCourse helps us unpack our lives alongside Paul’s life to find our purpose and passion. For more information on the churchwide series, visit WhichWayLord.UpperRoomBooks.org.

Soul Reset
Breakdown, Breakthrough, and the Journey to Wholeness Junius B. Dotson eCOURSE $19.00 Everything was going fine … until it wasn’t. It took an actual breakdown during a funeral for Rev. Junius B. Dotson to realize he needed a reset. As he recalls his own journey through grief, depression, burnout, and emotional breakdown, Dotson is passionate about calling for a Soul Reset. He calls out to all of us: pastors, church leaders, and all disciples of Jesus Christ. The Soul Reset eCourse is a 6-week study. It is for everyone who moves at breakneck speed through their daily lives, often relying only on their own strength to bring God’s kingdom on earth. Jesus shows us a different way, a more natural, unforced rhythm of what kingdom work looks like. The Spiritual Work of Justice Overcoming Racism From the outset, The Upper Room stood against racism, and it still does. Our very name was an inspired response to the reading of Acts 2:1-11 at a revival 85 years ago. The story of Pentecost is what birthed The Upper Room—the vision of a new kind of community, shaped by faith in Christ, that was international, interracial, and interdenominational. The Upper Room is committed to journeying with you as we commit together to the formational work of overcoming racism in our world. We can help each other and our faith communities by reaching in, reaching up, and reaching out, by demonstrating the beloved community Christ created. Rally Rally
Communal Prayers for Lovers of Jesus and Justice Edited and Compiled by Britney Winn Lee PAPERBACK $16.99 978-1-935205-31-9 “This is not your grandmother’s prayer book,” Shane Claiborne writes in the foreword. “This is a prayer book for revolution—a revolution of love and compassion and justice.” The prayers in this collection are meant to be prayed in community. Rally is a prayer book for faith communities searching for words to respond to the injustices around them. It’s a prayer book for Christian activists who believe in putting feet to their prayers. The book supplies words for concerned Christians who yearn to lift their voices to God about such issues as racism; the abuse of power and privilege; mistreatment of migrants and refugees; lives tragically lost; our violent society; white supremacy; and people being marginalized because of their gender, ethnic identity, sexual orientation, or economic status. Rally contains prayers for perpetrators, for loving our bodies, for listening to one another, for those who have been wounded by the church. In this resource, readers will find prayers that evoke hope and connection, guidance for sifting through the news and social media headlines, laments about destruction of the earth, and pleas for loving alike though we don’t think alike. The beauty of this book lies in the rich variety of voices and experiences of its writers—leaders who work at the intersection of Christianity and social justice and who want to resource those who gather to lament the needs and celebrate the possibilities of a better world. “Lord, stir us up to holy action,” cries this powerful book. Rally spurs people to compassionately continue the important work of loving God and neighbor until all of God’s people feel safe and seen.
