The Purpose Jesus replied to a Pharisee who asked him which was the greatest commandment: “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” —Matthew 22:37-40 (NRSV) Jesus makes it clear that loving God is the greatest commandment of all. But how do we love God with all our heart, soul, and mind? Loving God with everything that we have requires daily practice and discipline. And the best part is, once we cultivate these practices and learn how to love God deeply, we will inevitably find ourselves propelled to love our neighbor. The Upper Room invites you to explore our resources for women by women dedicated to cultivating practices of loving God with mind, body, and spirit. Throughout the catalog there are prayers, reflection questions, journaling spaces, and contemplative activities for you to try. No matter what season of life you are in, God is ready to meet you in new and profound ways. Come explore the possibilities with us, The Upper Room Staff

MIND MIND “How long must I wrestle with my thoughts?” —Psalm 13:2 (NIV) Loving God with our minds can be difficult when thoughts, anxieties, or distractions are swarming around in our heads. We invite you to explore these resources that encourage practices of stillness, focus, self-love, and healing so that you are able to hear God’s loving voice.

How has meditation helped you focus your mind and brought you closer to God? While my high school peers took ballet and tap, I went to church. Holy extracurricular activities weren’t necessarily my first choice, but I was the daughter of a single mother who couldn’t afford anything but time with Jesus. When I was in ninth grade, my grandparents bought me a violin. They knew I needed some variety to round out youth group, youth choir, youth handbells, and youth council. But when it came to practicing the violin, I was unfocused. I opened the case ten minutes before lessons to squeak out a few bars of “Swanee River.” My teacher knew I didn’t practice, but she didn’t chastise me. The lesson, she knew, would arrive in my first “performance,” a Sunday morning offertory in which I would accompany our church pianist. Days before my sanctuary debut, my mother asked if I was nervous. “It will just come to me, I know it will!” I replied. But that Sunday, it did not “just come to me.” First Baptist Church, Reidsville endured a painful three minutes of plate-passing to off-tune squeaks. I was mortified. Notes eluded me; strings were my enemies, and my bow bounced ungracefully with each pull. I didn’t have the muscle memory I’d hoped for because I hadn’t practiced.

Practice doesn’t make perfect, but it makes progress. My violin teacher taught me an important spiritual and practical lesson that year. I couldn’t get better at the violin without prioritizing it. I wouldn’t improve my connection with the instrument or the music unless I spent time with it. Learning and improving anything in our lives—especially faith—takes focus. Meditation—being silent and still in order to listen for God’s voice—helps me connect with myself and God. When I do not embrace time each morning for my meditation practice, I feel like I felt that morning in church: distracted, disconnected, frustrated, and alone. When I skip meditation practice, I can’t focus my mind. When I forgo my quiet time with God, I can’t tune myself to God’s voice or will. As a result, my faith weakens, my focus blurs, and fruits of the Spirit are in short supply. My morning meditation practice invites me to daily time with the Creator—the one who made us all instruments for love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. —J. Developing the Quiet Space DEEPENING SILENCE EXERCISE Seat yourself either in a chair or on a floor cushion. Set a timer for fifteen or twenty minutes. Assume a comfortable position with back straight and hands open, resting in your lap. Do not seek a specific solution or answer to problems or questions. Seek only to open completely to the One in whom you live and move and have your being. Breathe regularly. Quiet your inner clamor. Do not fight thoughts that arise, but don’t hold onto them either. Release them with no appraisal, and return to openness. You may find it helpful to: • Consider inner turbulence as the sea to which Jesus said, “Peace, be still.” • When thoughts bubble up, think, “Peace” and let go of them. • Close your eyes and continue this exercise until the timer sounds. As you leave, take with you a deepened sense of serenity.

How can we look to the Bible for spiritual healing?

We benefit when we set aside personal agendas and expectations and bring our most uncensored and vulnerable selves to the Bible’s stories. We need to quiet our hearts and listen for what God wants to tell us, rather than searching for what we want or expect to hear. That’s when we can receive God’s wisdom, which leads to healing. Healing is so much about bringing parts of our fragmented selves into a state of wholeness, and it’s a lifelong journey that happens as we begin to see ourselves through God’s love. Then we can begin to embrace deeper love for ourselves and receive deeper love from others. This interactive, transformative love brings spiritual healing to our lives. –Angela Schaffner 6

“My story of healing centers primarily around my participation in The Academy for Spiritual Formation, a program of The Upper Room. I spent years and years in therapy trying to heal from my trauma. And while I made great progress, I always hit a wall at the same place every time.

All that changed when I went to The Academy. There I encountered God in a way I never had before. It was profound, life-altering, game-changing, surprising, and gorgeous.

For the first time I could tell my story . . .” —Kristen Vincent, author of Beads of Healing

Daily devotion can indeed be risky business—when it expresses, in the words of John Wesley, “a desire to know the whole will of God, and a fixed resolution to do it.” In my own experience, however, even an experimental ten- or fifteen-minute practice as simple as reading scripture, journaling thoughts, and quietly listening can create an opening between us and God that changes our direction forever. BODY BODY “So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” —Genesis 1:27 (NRSV) In Genesis 1:27, we see two profound acts of love: The Creator formed us in God’s image and divinely created us to live in fellowship with others. How fitting to love God with our created bodies and love God in community as the body of Christ. We invite you to explore these resources dedicated to loving God through physicality, creativity, and community.

How does the body help us connect to God? The more diligently we practice anything, the better we get. Practicing the presence of God is no exception; our bodies, created by God and entrusted to us for just this lifetime, offer us the perfect place to practice connecting with our Creator. As I go through my day, taking my pulse reminds me of God’s constancy. Attending to my breath invites God’s renewal. Reviewing my thoughts redirects me. Applying my strength pauses me in gratitude for God’s provision. Best of all, as I practice God’s presence in the physical, I become more attuned to respond to whatever God asks of me, as

if life itself were turning up the volume on the still small voice that says, “I am yours and you are mine.” What a generous God we have who has implanted in our singularly human natures the very way to himself. As Paul reminds us in Romans 12:1, we are “to present (y)our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is (y)our spiritual worship.” There we find rest, renewal, and rejuvenation as we draw close, again and again. The more we practice, the better we get.—Wendy LeBolt

How can creative acts bring spiritual healing? Contemplative coloring is a beautiful way to pray together, especially when words are hard to find. Last year when my dad entered hospice care, words were certainly hard to find. During this time, I have precious memories of sitting silently and praying with mandalas together as a family. This simple, creative act brought profound spiritual healing. When we put crayons in our hands, a prayerful peace poured into our souls. Even now as I journey through the sacred act of grief, I continue to find healing through contemplative coloring. The mandalas I have colored over the past year have become a beautiful visual prayer journal that continues to bring me healing, hope, and insight. BODY

Pray with Your Body

Today’s prayer experience will consist of an entirely wordless prayer using a series of gestures you can add to as you feel led. First, stand with your hands clasped in front of you, fingers about as high as your nose. Bow at the waist, with your hands in front of you, recognizing the presence of the Divine. Stand upright again. Slowly open your hands into a bowl shape, lowering them as you open, as if you were receiving something placed into your hands. Then pull your hands apart, stretching your arms at your sides as if preparing to receive an embrace. Raise your arms over your head, palms out, in a gesture of blessing or benediction. Then slowly sink your hands back to your chest, bringing them back into the clasped starting position. Repeat this series of movements several times as you feel comfortable. Now, take a few minutes to think over or write down your response to the prayer. Could you put words to each movement? How do these gestures correspond with something you know about God? What does praying with your body add to your prayer intentions?

Many people think the church has become a social club with little impact on the world, but that is not God’s plan for the church. We Are the Church . . . Let’s Act Like It takes readers through the book of Acts, looking at what it means to be the world-changing church that Jesus intended. We Are the Church . . . Let’s Act Like It is a 7-week study that helps readers see the biblical vision for the church and a vision for what the church can be today. Pevey offers encouragement that the church can truly be a transformative presence in the world, just as the early church was in the book of Acts. UpperRoomBooks.com/WeAretheChurch PREORDER TODAY

How can the body of Christ bring healing to the world?

Ours is a highly polarized nation. We no longer see each other as fellow human beings made in God’s image. Instead we focus on how we differ. We often go even further by demonizing people who are different or with whom we disagree. In effect, we make them our enemies simply because we don’t share the same views. As the body of Christ, the church is in a unique position to offer a counternarrative to this divisive reality. Jesus calls us to love our enemies and treat others as we want to be treated. The church should be a sanctuary of healing brought about by treating others as Jesus did: with love, grace, and respect for all people—no matter who they are, where they come from, how much money they have, the color of their skin, or their nationality. In a culture polarized by differences, the church can bring healing by simply focusing on our common humanity. In the church we are equals: sinful human beings, each of us made in the image of God. The church is a place where a homeless person rubs elbows with the CEO who is serving her breakfast, where people of all nations sit side by side to worship our common Lord and Savior, and where we welcome people who are different as brothers and sisters in Christ. The early church, as demonstrated repeatedly in the book of Acts, was a place where everyone was welcomed and accepted. Today, simple acts of hospitality and acceptance bring healing to those accustomed to being overlooked, marginalized, and left out. The church heals by treating each person as valuable in the eyes of God. The church’s mantra should be to treat others as we want to be treated, just as Jesus instructed us in Luke 6:31. These simple words, when put into action, have the power to heal the world. —Linda Tower Pevey 22

SPIRIT SPIRIT “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.” —Psalm 150:6 In ancient Hebrew and Greek, the words for soul and spirit are often synonymous with the word breath. The notion of loving God with our spirit means that we are praising God with what energizes and gives us life. We invite you to explore these resources dedicated to loving God with our spirits in the midst of any season of life.

What has been the most helpful practice in renewing your spirit and revitalizing your friendship with God? Last winter I had the opportunity to be a guest speaker on a Caribbean cruise along with Dorothy Roberts and SallyAnn Roberts, the sisters of Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts. Promoted as the Footloose and Faithful Cruise by our host, Educational Opportunities Tours, it proved to be a well-suited title for our series of talks, since most of the participants had reached the middle years or beyond, a stage of life where the daily responsibilities of raising a family and building a career give way to a season of self-reflection. One of our ports of call was Grand Cayman Island with its famous Seven Mile Beach. I walked through a marketplace chock-full of souvenirs, and there among the rum cakes and spices was a wooden sign. The hand-lettered words made me smile. Seasick: a sense of longing to be by the sea. Suddenly a wave of nostalgia washed over me as memories of other beach vacations flooded my mind. I thought about my favorite beach on the island of St. John in the Virgin Islands. Then there’s Rosemary Beach in Florida,

the undeveloped Cumberland Island National Seashore in Georgia, and so many others. What is it about the beach that pulls at my heartstrings? Perhaps it is the rhythmic sounds of the waves that drown out the noise of the world. Maybe it’s the no-frills ambiance where fashion statements are made by flip-flops and oversized cover-ups. Or it could be the simple joy of sipping coffee and watching the full expanse of a sunrise as it spills onto the sea. One thing I know for sure: the beach is where I experience a close friendship with God. It is where God nudges me to strip away all pretense. No make-up. No schedule to keep. No one to impress. Just the authentic me and my awesome Creator. Now don’t misunderstand. As a native Texan, I often escape hot summers with trips to the mountains. I love to experience God where majestic peaks are reflected in the mirror of a lake. I give thanks for the clean, cool air and savor the fragrance of pine. But for me, a trip to the beach is a distinctive time of renewal. It is a spiritual pilgrimage that draws me into a deeper conversation with God. Here at the beach I experience the profound mystery of the vastness of water and sky. Of sunrise and sunset. Of life and death. —Missy Buchanan

An advocate for older adults, Missy Buchanan is an internationally recognized author and speaker on issues of aging faithfully. With thousands of followers on Twitter and Facebook, Missy provides daily insight and encouragement for the journey of aging. How can motherhood renew our spirit and bring us closer to God?

The hard truth is that motherhood can renew our spirit only by first breaking us open. Whether we are in the physically exhausting early years or the emotionally fraught teen years, motherhood takes us beyond the edges of ourselves. In that new and unfamiliar country of motherhood come moments of surprise: joyful connection with a child we’ve struggled with, a glimpse of strengths we didn’t know we had, the companionship of a friend–through which God draws close to us. In the heartbreak and the humdrum, in the belly laughs and the temper tantrums and every hidden moment in between, God whispers to us of God’s love for our children and for us. It is in making space to listen for those whispers with the same gentle curiosity we offer our children that motherhood renews our spirit and draws us deeper into God’s presence. —Lauren Burdette 36

A Widow’s Prayer

FINDING GOD’S GRACE IN THE DAYS AHEAD NELL E. NOONAN

Life’s crises can threaten our faith. The death of a spouse is one of the worst losses in life. “There are millions of us [widows], all mourning differently after an intense loss,” Nell Noonan writes in this collection of 60 devotions. “My fond hope is to encourage you to engage in self-care by setting aside time each day to pray, read scripture, and abide in the Lord’s presence.” These devotions offer widows comfort, strength, hope, and peace as they cope with their loss. 800.972.0433 • BOOKSTORE.UPPERROOM.ORG

We Are Beloved

A LENTEN JOURNEY WITH PROTESTANT PRAYER BEADS KRISTEN E. VINCENT

Christians often have the head knowledge that we are beloved, but deep in our hearts do we truly believe it? This 6-week Lenten journey follows stories of Jesus’ experience of God’s love. The incarnate Son of God was made fully human, which means that Jesus had to fully mature in strength and wisdom to learn that he was beloved. Just as Jesus learned of his belovedness, we, too, can cultivate the wisdom and knowledge that we are deeply loved. Each week begins with a scripture passage, a weekly devotion, reflection questions, an optional prayer bead experience, and a listening meditation. 6 weeks • Includes Leader’s Guide PAPERBACK $11.99 978-0-8358-1893-3

How can knowing we are beloved help renew our spirit?

We are beloved. We were created by the God of Love in the image of the God of Love. We were formed specifically so that we can love: God, ourselves, our neighbors, and creation. But we don’t always live as God’s beloved. Indeed, we often feel unworthy of love. We criticize ourselves, suffer from low self-esteem, and doubt our gifts. When we act out of this place of unworthiness, we communicate unworthiness—rather than love—to others. It’s not surprising there’s so much anger, bullying, violence, depression, poverty, and dissonance in our world. Imagine what it would look like to live as beloved: to recognize our belovedness, own it, revel in it, and then share it. How much brighter our world would be! We would experience joy, beauty, peace, delight—all reminders of just how deeply we are loved by God. —Kristen Vincent
