Change and Progress The summer has moved by faster than ever here in Kingston, as I am sure it has for our 2011 graduates. Three months ago we delivered another class of excellent Doctors of Pharmacy to the profession. We also celebrated our first graduate from our new Bachelor of Science in the Pharmaceutical Sciences program. These new alumni went off to work in some of the most sought after practice opportunities in competitive residencies, hospitals, health systems, managed care organizations, the military, community pharmacy and the industry. We know these students will make a difference for hundreds of thousands of patients as they strive to improve the health of others and make medication use safer and more effective. Alumni Newsletter:

The main commencement ceremony featured Newark Mayor Corey Booker who told graduates to “Stand up for who you are, for where you come from, stand up in honor of those who came before, and stand up with hope for those who will come after.” At the college hooding ceremony following commencement, Dr. JeanMarie Pflomm ‘96 Editor, The Medical Letter, urged our new pharmacists to seize the opportunities before them without fear, because if they do, they will make a difference in people’s lives and their own. Dr. Pflomm’s relatively short and rapidly rising career demonstrates the versatility of a URI Pharmacy degree and the quality of preparation she received. Since her graduation, Jean-Marie moved from a residency, to a professorship, to clinical service in two large New York Health Systems, to the lead pharmacist editor of The Medical Letter on Drugs and Therapeutics and Treatment Guidelines from the Medical Letter, that influence the clinical decision making of countless professionals and the care delivered to literally many millions of patients.

The rate of change that will challenge this group of graduates is unprecedented. The changes in our nation’s economy, the world, technology, our understanding of genomics and so many other areas will make it essential that this generation pursue the oath they gave to embrace change that improves the care of patients. They will achieve great success as they serve others by building ideas, goals and innovations around human values. As they progress in their careers facing rapid change and endless new opportunities, we wish them all the best and hope they remember to update their College and University on the great things they will achieve. We also began a year long celebration of the illustrious career of Dr. Joan M. Lausier ‘67 & ‘71, Associate Dean of Academic and Student affairs who will retire in June of 2012. Over her 40+ year career at the College of Pharmacy, Dr. Lausier has seen thousands of students, many tens of faculty and all four Deans progress through the College. Her singular straight forward guidance and steady direction has been the source of success for so many of us that it will be difficult to fill her shoes. We hope that our celebration at every opportunity this year does justice to her stellar career. In closing the progress on your new College facility is moving rapidly. The change evident there every day is most astounding at this point. We know you will be proud of this new building and of the return on the investment we will deliver to you, with our efforts toward even greater degrees of excellence in our education, research and outreach to the community missions. Please come by for a hard hat tour if you are in the vicinity sometime soon. Please also watch for announcements and join us at the early 2012 ribbon cutting and a bit later in the spring for a Grand Opening Celebration. Dean Ronald P. Jordan ‘76

A Peek Inside Since the start of the new building construction project, everyone has been able to view the construction work from the outside through our web cameras, and we have received lots of great feedback on them. Now with much of the work taking place on the inside, we are sharing some pictures to let you see the progress there, too.

On the right are a classroom and offices including the dean’s office, at the end will be two high tech conference rooms and on the left will be the experiential education and graduate / research suites. Reflections on the B.S.P.S Program Jillian Chase graduated this May as our first ever B.S.P.S. major. The following are her reflections on our newest program.

Kappa Psi: Beta Epsilon’s Centennial Celebration On April 30th the Beta Epsilon chapter of Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity celebrated its 100th anniversary. The banquet was held at the Biltmore Hotel in Providence, and saw a tremendous turnout of Beta Epsilon Alumni, National Officers, visitors from other chapters, and current brothers. The ceremony was a celebration of the hard work of Beta Epsilon brothers of the past century, and was used as an opportunity to install the 101st Executive Board of the chapter. Additionally, several scholarships were handed out to students by the Providence Graduate Chapter. The Beta Epsilon chapter at the University of Rhode Island is one of the most storied chapters of this national organization. It has produced 4 Grand Regents (National Presidents of Kappa Psi), as well as many leaders in Pharmaceutical organizations across the country. Several current Faculty members of the College of Pharmacy are Beta Epsilon alumni, including Dean Ronald Jordan ‘76. The event was extremely successful and well executed and owes its success to the efforts of a few hardworking individuals, most notably Immediate-Past Regent Anthony Harrison, and Incoming Regent Russell Poisson. Kappa Psi has enjoyed a wonderful century at the University of Rhode Island, and looks forward to the 101st year of our brotherhood. Kevin Gaul, Kappa Psi: Beta Epsilon, Historian

“With graduation just behind me I am both excited and anxious to enter the workforce, as most seniors are. I truly feel that the B.S.P.S. program has provided me a strong knowledge foundation in the pharmaceutical sciences and has prepared me for my next step: breaching the path from student to scientist. I look forward to the challenges of industry and gaining experience working for a pharmaceutical company in the time between finishing my bachelor's degree and working towards a PhD. The B.S.P.S. program could not have been a better fit for me, as I have always had a strong interest in scientific research, particularly in the area of pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. Having completed the rigorous coursework, I am walking away with a vast knowledge of various areas of the pharmaceutical industry, I am eager to put this knowledge to use and I have developed strong connections with aspiring scientists (my peers) and established scientists (my professors). The lab experience has taught me that science is never black and white, it can be frustrating at times and often requires a great deal of patience, however, with perseverance and dedication can provide great insight into the unknown. As bittersweet as graduating was, I look forward to my next set of challenges.”

Honoring Dean Lausier

50 Extraordinary Years

Dear Colleagues and Friends: As you may already know Associate Dean Joan Lausier will be retiring in June 2012. She was the first woman appointed to the College of Pharmacy faculty whose career spans an extraordinary 50 years as a student, faculty member and administrator. During this time she distinguished herself as an incomparable leader. Keeping in mind that the College has been in Kingston for 53 years, it is fair to say that Joan Lausier IS the College of Pharmacy. She has provided the College with decades of invaluable service by overseeing the comprehensive needs of the students and faculty. Joan is not only an administrator; she is also the person people turn to whenever they need advice or just someone who will listen: - Need a class? – See Dean Lausier - Need scholarship funds to pay your tuition bill? – See Dean Lausier - Had a problem living “down the line”? – Call Dean Lausier - Need a cookie? – See Dean Lausier She is loved by generations of students and will have a lasting impact on the College long after she retires. As a fitting tribute to someone so special, the College of Pharmacy is reaching out to the thousands of alumni and friends that Joan has touched over the years to give back in her honor. We are embarking on a campaign to raise $500,000 to name the Joan M. Lausier Student Affairs Suite in the new building. This national effort is a direct reflection on the essence of Joan as a leader and will enhance her legacy as one of the best-known figures ever known to the College of Pharmacy.
