ARTIST

The Artist badge is a fun activity and every scout is a Master artist in his own way. One of the best ideas for this badge is ~to find someone who tie dyes or does silk screening. Let the scouts work together and design a unique t-shirt for your group. Some other ideas for this badge are:

On an 8 1/2 X 11 sheet, draw or use pictures

c

(magazine,

newspaper, etc.) to form a collage to depict major events in the scout's life (or make a collage to fit some other theme).

c

Each scout could design his own record album cover or book cover.

Design a business card for your group to pass out at service

projects or scout gatherings.

0

Design a calendar for the coming year using months embedded in pictures. Xerox and sell to pack members and families for funds for a service project or group activity.

c r

!

k

L D

Draw a cartoon book.

•

Use coffee filters or paper towels to separate out water

base colors into their component colors.

Make styrofoam "shrinky" decorations for Christmas,

Valentine's Day,

etc.

Make a coupon book of good deeds for a present to parents. Ask a local artist to come to a meeting to demonstrate perspective drawing, various ways to draw letters, or various writing styles.

Make some string art pictures by either the sewing or nail

method.

Turn scouts loose with various materials - screws,

buttons,

pieces of sponge, wood of various shapes and sizes, cloth scraps,

etc.

and allow them to create their own masterpiece.

Make a color wheel buzz saw toy.

Design your own personalized license plate.

The following paper creations maybe used as tree ornaments or suspended

to catch the breeze and slowly rotate. All the creations can be made smaller

by either (1) dividing the length by a number e.g. divide by 2 for 1/2 size, 3 for third size, 4 for one-fourth size; or (2) reducing the different

lengths

equally,e.g., subtracting 1 inch from all lengths, etc. The smaller the stapler

used the easier it is to do these, but a full size stapler is ok too. 1. Heart - 3 strips of 1/2 by 9 inch 2 strips of 1/2 by 7 1/2 inch 2 strips of 1/2 by 6 inch

a) Hold the center strip downward.

All others are held upward and are

Start with apiece of paper 6 inches square. Follow the direction.|| on the attached sheet. Here are several helpful hints.

'-p

♦ In step ©you might want to make a template about 6 inches long

and 1 inch wide with a small notch cut at the 1/2 B 1 inch spots.y

c

The boys could then lay the edge of the template along the C-0 line, draw the dotted line E-F, and mark the points for the cut.

♦ In step$ open the body up, reach down and pull the tail up out of the body.

c

♦ if using white paper, decorate the plane after stapling. 4)

a)Cut out a plastic 5 sided template using the pattern given. A Paper

template can be used, but it is harder to see what you are doing when composing your picture.

•='

c

L I

b) Use the template and lay it on some old Christmas cards which would make a nice picture inside the template. Mark the outline of the template with pencil and cut out the picture,

c) Using round toothpicks, start to glue a frame around the picture until the toothpicks are 4 layers high.

d)Glue the first layer of toothpicks in the following order

as indicated on the template pattern. Glue toothpicks ©and down first directly to the paper. Then number (5)lies directly across the top of #and(§) Glue down (&) so that one end rests on top of(f)and the other end is attached directly to the paper.

Glueg)so that one end is on top of£)and the other end rests atop $, Continue the next layer in the same order until the layers are 4 high.

:s Use Tacky Glue for this if possible. If using Elmer's place some on wax paper or aluminum foil and let it set

kout for 10-15 minutes before using. This makes it a little VCKY AND EASIER TO USE FOR THIS project.

YOU SURE

is buck ink really black? is green ink really green? sometimes ^

there is more to things than meets the eye. a simple way to show 1his.& can be done using a coffee filter or paper towel. cut a strip of filter paper the length of a clear glass jar or glass. punch a hole near the end

large enough to pass a pencil through. about 3/4 - inch from the other end

place an ink blot and allow to dry. holding the paper mounted on the pencil, outside of the glass, add enough water so that the water level

is about mr inch below your ink spot. now carefully lower your paper

into the glass and allow the water to move up the paper to your spot.

Allow the water to go up the paper until it is about \ - inch from

the pencil. by this time you can tell what various colors have separated out. try inks, water soluble paints, flairs, food coloring,

etc.

it takes about 10 minutes for the water to move about 4 inches

up the paper.
