Traveling has become a part of American life. Good cars and cheap gas (well...not so cheap, but we buy it anyway) keep families on the move for weekend jaunts or long distance vacations. Below are ideas to help the Webelos understand some of the planning which goes into traveling. Obtain city or state maps from your local travel agents or from you Chamber of Commerce. Xerox national maps from an atlas
in your
local
library.
Plan a school bus route through your city so that all your den members can be picked up for school.

Plan a skit showing what you should do on a school bus, on a city bus, or in your car. (Showing consequences of wrong behavior might be something the scouts would really get into.)
Discuss some things which can happen to make public transportation
systems

Obtain a time schedule from a Greyhound station or airport and learn to

tables.
Plan a cross
country tour
trip for two weeks using the schedule for planning. Make a game out of
learning highway signs.
Learn the CB slang words. Make up your own for your city, pedestrian, restaurants, flat tire, traffic jam, running late, and location.
Have the scouts in a line of chairs and become a convoy of eighteen wheelers. Develop a skit with a running conversation using CB slang. Develop a series of 3" x 5" index cards with each card containing one of the conductor situations. Shuffle cards and distribute. Have each scout read the problem and develop an answer.
