We laugh. We pray. We give thanks for joyous occasions and seek solace when in distress. The stones listen and absorb. History shapes our beings. We step back in distance, in time, in perspective. The stones, the air and the hills listen and speak. Binyamin Bastekerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s language is abstract. His subject is expression. His paintings sing and dance - always hopeful. Some are joyous and some are solemn. Each work evokes emotion; through his paintings we travel in time, as we wait and anticipate...

Every day I am astounded by the perfection of Creation: the world, nature, humans, all that was, that is and that will be. Creation is a combination of the hidden and the revealed. We are occupied with the revelation of the hidden and thus contribute minutely to this wonderful world. It is this need that drives me to paint. At times, the expression is complex and at others minimal - but always a deep expression of emotions. Facing a white canvas poses a special challenge, and at times a threat, similar to our daily unique quests, queries and explorations. As an artist, I am not a substitute for a camera. I draw from nature - nature has the power to reveal like no other. Every element in nature is a complete world. Nature enhances the artist far beyond the power of imagination. I seek through painting that which is granted by Nature in order to discover the hidden elements not detected by the ordinary eye. My tools of quest are observation, color, shade, and composition. My means are the endless variations of light and shadow, atmosphere, and emotion. This massive wealth I translate to the canvas and present to the viewer. When I create in the morning, the air of dawn and the calm that prevails in the world reproduces for me on the canvas a soft, quiet, clear and calm atmosphere. There are no “words” of the known spoken language. Every being of creation sings its unique daily praise; so too, through the paints and the canvas the artist within me reveals the wonders of creation, the “visible” and the “invisible”. In every object, I see Nature speaking to me in a language that only I understand. I am an abstract artist. Painting is my speech. In my unique language, using the tools and techniques that I have perfected, I observe and explore and create works whose source is rooted in Creation. The end result conveys to the world an emotional experience. The language of abstraction allows me to express without words - words are the expression of the finite. The richness of nature is infinite. Abstraction aspires to the infinite; the dwelling of perfection. Facing the work is the observer whose vision and feelings differ from mine. This observation perceives in the painting a unique narrative, not necessarily that which I intended. This too was created directly by the influence of creation. I am simply a tool.

‫בכל יום אני מתפעל מחדש מהבריאה המושלמת‪ :‬העולם‪,‬‬ ‫הטבע‪ ,‬האדם וכל מה שהיה‪ ,‬הווה ויהיה‪ .‬הבריאה מורכבת‬ ‫מהנסתר והנגלה‪ .‬צורך האדם הוא לגלות את הנסתר ובכך‬ ‫לתרום את חלקו הקטנטן לעולם הנפלא‪ .‬צורך זה הוא הדוחף‬ ‫אותי לצייר‪ .‬פעם הביטוי מורכב ופעם הביטוי מינימליסטי ‪ -‬אך‬ ‫תמיד התבטאות עמוקה מלאת רגשות‪.‬‬ ‫עמידה מול הבד הלבן מהווה אתגר מיוחד‪ ,‬ולעיתים מאיים‪,‬‬ ‫כהשכמה ליום חדש עם החוויות והחיפושים והחקירות‬ ‫המיוחדים לו‪ .‬כצייר אינני תחליף למצלמה‪ .‬אני שואב מן‬ ‫הטבע ‪ -‬מה שהטבע מגלה אין כוח אחר אשר יכול לגלות‪.‬‬ ‫כל אלמנט בטבע הוא עולם ומלואו‪ .‬הטבע מעניק לאמן מה‬ ‫שאין הדמיון יכול להעניק‪ .‬אני מחפש בציור את שנותן לנו‬ ‫הטבע כדי למצוא את הנסתר אשר עין רגילה לא מבחינה‪ .‬כלי‬ ‫החיפוש שלי הם ההתבוננות‪ ,‬הצבעים‪ ,‬הגוונים‪ ,‬והקומפוזיציה‪.‬‬ ‫האמצעים שלי הם הווריאציות האינסופיות של משחקי אור‬ ‫וצל‪ ,‬האווירה‪ ,‬וההתרגשויות‪ .‬את כל העושר הזה אני מתרגם‬ ‫לקנבס כדי להביא להסתכלותו של הצופה‪ .‬כאשר אני יוצר‬ ‫בבוקר‪ ,‬אויר השחר והשקט השורר בעולם מייצר עבורי על הבד‬ ‫אוירה רכה‪ ,‬שקטה‪ ,‬בהירה ורגועה‪ .‬אין “מילים” של השפה‬ ‫המדוברת המוכרת לאדם‪ .‬אלא כשם שכל בריאה שרה תהילה‬ ‫יומיומית מיוחדת לה‪ ,‬כך האמן שבי באמצאות הצבעים והבד‬ ‫מברר מתוך “הנראה” ו”הלא נראה” את נפלאות הבריאה‪ .‬בכל‬ ‫דבר ובכל אובייקט העומד מולי‪ ,‬אני רואה את הטבע בעיצומו‬ ‫המדבר אלי בצורה שרק אני מבין‪.‬‬ ‫אני אמן מופשט‪ .‬תהליך הציור הוא הדבור שלי‪ .‬בשפה הייחודית‬ ‫שלי‪ ,‬ובאמצעות הכלים‪ ,‬והטכניקה‪ ,‬אני מחפש‪ ,‬חוקר ומעמיק‬ ‫ולבסוף יוצר חוויות ששורשן בבריאה‪ .‬בגמר המלאכה‪ ,‬אני‬ ‫מעביר לעולם את החוויה הרגשית‪ .‬שפת ההפשטה מאפשרת‬ ‫לי לבטא את שארצה בלא מילים ‪ -‬מילים הן ביטוי של המוגבל‪.‬‬ ‫העושר שבטבע הוא אין סופי‪ .‬וההפשטה היא השואפת לאין‬ ‫סוף אשר שם נמצאת החוויה המושלמת‪.‬‬ ‫כעת‪ ,‬מול הציור עומד הצופה אשר עיניו רואות בטבע את שעיניי‬ ‫אינן רואות ואשר רגשותיו שונות משלי—כלומר אדם אחר‪ .‬אדם‬ ‫זה רואה בציור אמירה וסיפור משלו אשר לא בהכרח כיוונתי‪.‬‬ ‫גם זה נוצר ישירות בהשפעת הבריאה‪ .‬אני רק כלי‪.‬‬

“You are Indian. Don’t be afraid to use color.” (Avigdor Stematsky)

I was born in Bombay, India to a family of artists. At a young age, with the Indian masters, I studied classical technique and portraiture, proper use of color and Indian design. Following my degree studies in Tel Aviv, I worked in the surroundings of the Israeli masters. Those that influenced me most were Yechiel Shemi, Avigdor Stematsky, Michael Argov, John Byle, Alima and Lea Nikel. Once, when visiting my studio, Stematsky commented “You are not Polish, you are Indian. Don’t be afraid to use color.” This collection represents for me a new climax. Each painting is a complete statement. Yet together, each represents a part of a complete spiritual experience. In this series, fifty years of artistic creation rooted in the depths of Israeli art history have joined together with thirty years of Torah study and observance. The result is a unique and innovative expression that touches the hearts of all. Each painting tells a story that is uniquely mine, yet each viewer will see one uniquely his own.

‫נולדתי בעיר בומבי שבהודו למשפחת אמנים‪ .‬בגיל צעיר למדתי אצל מיטב האמנים ההודים‬ ‫ומהם למדתי טכניקה קלסית ופורטרטים‪ ,‬שימוש נכון בצבע ועיצוב הודי‪ .‬אחר סיום לימודי‬ ‫התואר יצרתי בקרבת אומנים אשר מהם קיבלתי השראה ליצירותיי‪ .‬המשפיעים עלי ביותר‬ ‫הם יחיאל שמי ‪ ,‬אביגדור סטימצקי ‪ ,‬מיכאל ארגוב‪ ,‬גו’ן בייל‪ ,‬אלימה‪ ,‬ולאה ניקל‪ .‬פעם ביקר‬ ‫אצלי סטימצקי ויעץ “אתה לא פולני אתה הודי‪ .‬אל תפחד‪ .‬שים‬ ‫הרבה צבעים‪”.‬‬ ‫הסדרה הזאת מהוה עבורי פסגה‪ .‬כל ציור עומד בזכות עצמו‪,‬‬ ‫אך יחד עם זאת מהוה חלק מחוויה רוחנית שלמה‪ .‬בסדרה‬ ‫מתחברות חמישים שנות עשייה אמנותית עם שורשים היונקים‬ ‫מההיסטוריה של האמנות הישראלית יחד עם למעלה משלושים‬ ‫שנות לימוד התורה‪ .‬התוצאה היא אמירה ייחודית וחדשנית‬ ‫אשר נוגעת ללב כל אדם‪ .‬כל ציור מספר סיפור אישי שלי‪ ,‬אך כל‬ ‫צופה יראה בו את הסיפור האישי שלו‪.‬‬ ‫‪Basteker & Stematsky, 1977‬‬
