The artist is an expert portrait artist, yet he does not end with the superficial “pretty picture of a Rabbi”. As a Rabbi in yeshiva, Douer understands the depths of the individual and his sprirituality. Using this gift, he takes what he needs and omits what is superfluous to achieve the innermost expression of the subject. During the process, suddenly the artist realizes that the painting is “finished”, yet this is only his side of the creation.

I was raised in a family where art was a topic of conversation. My grandmother was a successful curator and artist. My father was once a successful art dealer. And my mother studied theater and painting. Art was a simple and understandable language. I painted and painted some more.

I might paint eight hours or more without a break. Food was held in my left hand and a brush in my right. I didn’t paint to be an artist. I created for myself. I didn’t think anyone was anticipating my creation. I painted because I was honored to have the right to paint.

In our home, artists were a recognized phenomenon and their tendency toward narcissism was the subject of severe criticism. As I grew up and my work was exposed to critique from significant artists and professional art critics, I discovered the magic of universal painting, a painting that is part of the culture, a painting that comes from the painter’s blood but speaks a language that is understandable to the viewer. For me, this discovery was my answer to the value of painting.

The evolution and transition from a very sophisticated yet subjective painting to one that is open to the viewer who is allowed to and even encouraged to share my inner process, has brought to my paintings their sense of power and aesthetic. From this I have great benefit.

From the moment I realized that I am vulnerable in my studio, and this is what I desired, my focus turned to the power of the material. When I paint, I articulate through my material, simultaneously producing a strong aesthetic.

Aesthetics are the deciding factor in my works. I strive to achieve it constantly. I focus upon it, and almost solely upon on it. Every splash of paint and its depth passes through the threshold of passionate critique.

My work reflects the way I view contemporary - postmodern painting and its rejuvenated thesis.

In contrast to “kitsch art” (there are those that may question whether these are contradictory terms, but I prefer not to entertain such a discussion) in which the plastic process is short-lived, the spectrum of depth in each image is relatively limited and the transition between them is light and fast, I attempt to guide the viewer through the depths of the painting. After each “complete” composition, I apply additional layers and processes to the painting, almost a new painting using new elements of composition. The painting develops as if it were made up of several unique complete paintings. The balance between and contribution of the upper composition and the lower one is essential. I stop suddenly at a point where the lower composition is in danger of losing its impact.

Sometimes I leave the lower layers exposed to allow the viewer individual space in which to move within the painting. Thus, the viewer shares his own experience within the work itself.

Other times, I use dark outlines; the viewer does the work alone and does not need my “3D explanations”.

And yet, I try to give the work an artificial yet conscious glow using color, texture (smooth at times), white, or at times sharp contrast. The intent of this beauty is to conceal the drama and the subtle complexity that makes up the inner structure of each work, and to control the intensities of sensory energy that propels me to a particular story.

How does this actually happen?

The starting point of the painting is the understanding of the known. I make use of mythology: a realistic portrait, a familiar scene, Judaica. As the painting develops, familiar imagery from the world of art appear: an ancient mosaic of Medusa, Picasso’s Night Fishing at Antibes, Van Gogh’s The Potato Eaters, all of which serve as artistic raw material that infuse within me excitement while I work and serve to excite the viewer as well.

Following the mythical acquaintance with the painting, my artistic gaze begins to wander, on the one hand familiarity yet gradually transcending to a different level, constant yet gradual reformation. I paint with a constant awareness, and through my paints I tell a story to myself.

Unlike a true mythical painting which draws the viewer into the painting, I am tossed in and out throughout the process. Every time I sink into a painting I am brought back to my inner self.

The knowledge that a painting does not exist of its own merit, only in so far as I am the viewer...

The longer the process, the stronger is the polarity, and the painting is truer to me. The higher the starting point, the more familiar, the more self-evident, the more simplicity, the more the painting ends up with nothing as the emptying is fully performed, brings me back to myself.

Such is the ultimate power and magic.

Exploring the DNA of a particular painting leads to discover my sensitive side as it is revealed throughout the process. This sensitivity will dictate what is the right spot and what is wrong.

Despite the richness of the stains, the contrast, the complexity, and the intense dynamics, the paintings are always limited to one and only one plastic statement. Once I rest the paintbrush on the fabric, I am loyal to the painting; I delve into it and do not alter its DNA as dictated by the external processes. This requires a high level of concentration. As someone who had to paint in a dorm shared by six people, it is a trait that I was forced to acquire when I was struggling to paint.

Leonardo da Vinci is quoted as having stated “art is never finished, only abandoned.”

Nevertheless, there is a very clear stage where the stains, layers, color, texture, and content, become one organic unit. At this point, I polish the painting, hide the marks that contrast the painting’s unique organism and highlight the focal points that empower it.

There is often a moment when a small dot in red or white is the right thing at the moment. And I know I’m close to the finish line. When it comes to rest on the canvas it may be too big so I cut it half or a third even though it is a point of less than one cm in diameter. It is at this point that my painting process ceases and the viewer takes over.

‫של כל עבודה‪ ,‬ולשלוט בעוצמות האנרגיה החושית שדוחפת אותי לסיפור מסוים‪.‬‬ ‫איך זה קורה בפועל?‬ ‫נקודת ההתחלה בעבודה היא המבט אל המוכר‪ .‬אני משתמש עם מיתולוגיה‬ ‫כלשהיא‪- .‬פורטרט ריאליסטי‪ ,‬סצנה מוכרת‪ ,‬יודאיקה‪ ,‬לעיתים קרובות בעל כורחי‬ ‫משתרבבים דימויים מעולם האמנות‪ ,‬כמו פסיפס עתיק של מדוזה‪ ,‬דיג באנטיב‬ ‫של פיקאסו‪ ,‬אוכלי תפוחי האדמה של ואן גוך‪ ,‬כל אלו משמשים חומר גלם אמנותי‬ ‫שמלהטט בי תוך כדי עבודה וכך גם בצופה‪.‬‬ ‫לאחר ההיכרות המיתית עם הציור‪ ,‬מתחיל המבט האמנותי לנוע‪ ,‬המוכר האחד‪,‬‬ ‫הופך לאחר‪ ,‬ואז שוב לאחר‪ ,‬בהדרגה ובחמקנות‪ .‬אני מצייר כל הזמן מתוך מודעות‬ ‫שאני מצייר‪ ,‬שאני מספר סיפור לעצמי‪.‬‬ ‫בניגוד לציור מיתי באמת‪ ,‬ששואב את הצופה‪ ,‬אני נזרק פנימה והחוצה לכל אורך‬ ‫התהליך‪ .‬בכל פעם שאני שוקע בציור הוא מחזיר אותי לעצמי‪ .‬לידיעה שהציור לא‬ ‫קיים‪ ,‬רק אני הצופה‪.‬‬ ‫ככל שהתהליך ארוך יותר ונושא קוטביות חזקה יותר‪ ,‬הוא נכון לי יותר‪ .‬ככל שנקודת‬ ‫ההתחלה גבוהה יותר‪ ,‬מוכרת יותר‪ ,‬מובנת יותר מאיליה‪ ,‬פשוטה יותר‪ ,‬וככל שבסוף‬ ‫אתה נשאר עם יותר כלום ככל שהריקון בוצע באופן מלא ומשיב אותי יותר אל עצמי‪.‬‬ ‫כך הקסם עוצמתי יותר‪.‬‬ ‫ההיכרות עם ה‪ DNA‬של הציור המסוים מוביל את הצד החושי שלי לכל אורך‬ ‫הדרך‪ .‬הוא מספר לו מיהו כתם נכון ומי טעות‪ .‬לכן למרות עושר הכתמים‪ ,‬ההנגדה‪,‬‬ ‫המורכבות‪ ,‬והדינמיות העזה‪ ,‬הציורים לכידים תמיד סביב אמירה פלסטית אחת‬ ‫ורק אחת‪ .‬מרגע שהנחתי את המכחול על הבד‪ ,‬אני נאמן לציור ואני שוקע בתוכו‬ ‫ולא משנה את ה ‪ DNA‬שלו לפי תהליכים חיצוניים‪ .‬הדבר הזה דורש ממני יכולת‬ ‫ריכוז גבוהה‪ .‬בתור מי שנאלץ לצייר בחדר פנימייתי משותף לשישה אנשים‪ ,‬זו‬ ‫יכולת שנאלצתי לפתח כשנלחמתי לצייר‪.‬‬ ‫למרות האמירה של פיקאסו “ציור גמור‪ ,‬הוא ציור שנמכר”‪ .‬בכל זאת ישנו שלב‬ ‫מאוד ברור בו הכתמים‪ ,‬השכבות‪ ,‬הצבע‪ ,‬הטקסטורה‪ ,‬והתוכן‪ ,‬הופכים לכדי יחידה‬ ‫אורגנית אחת‪ .‬בשלב הזה אני מלטש את הציור‪ ,‬מעלים את הכתמים המנוגדים‬ ‫לאותו אורגניזם ומדגיש את נקודות המוקד המעצימות אותו‪.‬‬ ‫לעיתים קרובות מגיע רגע בו נקודה קטנה באדום או בלבן הוא הדבר הנכון כרגע‪.‬‬ ‫ואני יודע שאני קרוב לקו הסיום‪ .‬כשהיא נחה על הבד לעיתים אני יודע שהיא גדולה‬ ‫מדי וגורע ממנה חצי או שליש למרות שמדובר על נקודה בקוטר ס”מ‪ .‬מעתה כל‬ ‫תחכום‪ ,‬כל צעד אחד קדימה‪ ,‬יפרום את הסיפור ויפתח מסע חדש‪ .‬במובן הזה ציור‬ ‫לא נגמר אף פעם‪.‬‬

‫נולדתי בבית שדיברו בו אמנות‪ .‬סבתי הייתה אוצרת ואמנית‪ .‬אבי סוחר אמנות‬ ‫בעברו‪ .‬ואימי למדה תיאטרון וציור‪ .‬אמנות הייתה שפה פשוטה ומובנת‪ .‬ציירתי‬ ‫וציירתי‪ .‬לעיתים ציירתי שמונה שעות ויותר ברציפות‪ .‬אוכל בידי השמאלית‪ .‬לא‬ ‫ציירתי כדי להיות אמן ‪ .‬ציירתי בשביל עצמי בלבד‪ .‬לא חשבתי שאיש מחכה ליצירה‬ ‫שלי‪ .‬ציירתי כי הייתה לי הזכות לצייר‪.‬‬ ‫בבית שגדלתי בו‪ ,‬אמנים היו תופעה מוכרת והנטייה שלהם לנרקיסיזם היה מושא‬ ‫לביקורת חריפה‪ .‬כשגדלתי והעבודות שלי נחשפו לביקורת מפיהם של אמנים‬ ‫משמעותיים ומבקרי אמנות מקצועיים‪ ,‬גיליתי את קסמו של הציור האוניברסלי‪,‬‬ ‫ציור שהוא חלק מהתרבות‪ ,‬ציור שאמנם בא מדמו של הצייר אך הוא מדבר בשפה‬ ‫שמובנת לצופה‪ .‬הגילוי הזה היה בשבילי התשובה לשאלת הערך של הציור‪.‬‬ ‫היציאה והמעבר מציור מתוחכם מאוד‪ ,‬אבל סובייקטיבי‪ ,‬לציור פתוח לצופה‪ ,‬ציור‬ ‫שבו הצופה שותף לתהליך הפנימי שלי‪ ,‬הביא לציוריי את תחושת הכח‪ ,‬ואת‬ ‫האסתטיקה שלהם‪ .‬יצאתי נשכר‪.‬‬ ‫מהרגע שהבנתי שאני חשוף בסטודיו ושזה מה שאני רוצה‪ ,‬המיקוד שלי בכוחו של‬ ‫החומר‪ ,‬הפך יותר ויותר חזק‪ .‬כשאני מצייר‪ ,‬אני משתדל לצייר עם כל השליטה‬ ‫בחומר ולבטא אותה‪ ,‬במקביל לייצר אסתטיקה חזקה‪.‬‬ ‫האסתטיקה היא הגורם המכריע בעבודות‪ .‬אני מכוון אליה כל הזמן‪ ,‬וממוקד בה‪,‬‬ ‫וכמעט רק בה‪ .‬כל כתם וכל מימד בציור עובר את מפתן ביקורת תשוקתה‪.‬‬ ‫העבודה שלי משקפת את האופן שאני רואה ציור עכשווי ‪ /‬פוסט‪-‬מודרני והתזה‬ ‫המתחדשת שלו‪.‬‬ ‫בניגוד לאמנות ‘הקיטש’ בה התהליך הפלסטי הוא קצר טווח‪ ,‬וספקטרום המימדים‬ ‫שבכל תמונה הוא קטן יחסית והמעבר ביניהם קליל ומהיר‪ ,‬אני משתדל להעביר את‬ ‫הצופה דרך עמוקה‪ .‬אחרי כל ביצוע קומפוזיציה שלמה לחלוטין אני מבצע על הציור‬ ‫תהליך נוסף‪ ,‬כמעט ציור חדש תוך שימוש ברכיב חדש ממרכיבי הקומפוזיציה‪ .‬כאילו‬ ‫הציור מורכב מכמה וכמה ציורים שלמים לגמרי‪ .‬אני עוצר בשלב בו הקומופוזיות‬ ‫התחתונות עלולות לאבד את השפעתן‪.‬‬ ‫לעיתים‪ ,‬אני משאיר את השכבות התחתונות חשופות כדי לאפשר לצופה מרחב‬ ‫לנוע בתוך הציור‪ .‬ולשתף אותו ביצירה עצמה‪ .‬לפעמים הדרך לעשות זאת היא‬ ‫ע”י קווי מתאר כהים‪ ,‬הצופה עושה לבד את העבודה ולא נזקק להסברים התלת‬ ‫מימדים שלי‪.‬‬ ‫ובכל זאת אני משתדל להעניק לעבודה ברק מלאכותי ומודע‪ .‬זה בצבעים‪,‬‬ ‫בטקסטורות החלקות‪ ,‬בצבעי הלבן‪ ,‬ובקונטרסט החד‪ .‬כל החינניות הזו כדי להעלים‬ ‫ולהסתיר את הדרמה‪ ,‬המורכבות והתסבוכת הצורנית שמרכיבה את המבנה הפנימי‬
