NFPA 79 Edition 2007 – Challenges and Solutions The first edition of the National Electrical Code® (NEC), also referred to as NFPA 70, was published in 1897. The NEC, which addresses the causes of electricity-induced fire, is the only code for electrical installations that enjoys national recognition in the USA. The code is updated every three to four years. In Article 670 “Industrial Machinery“ the NEC refers to the NFPA 79 (Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery), a standard which helps to ensure fire safety by specifying the requirements for electrical equipment of industrial machinery or industrial manufacturing systems. Manufacturers and operators of plant and machinery have to comply with this and other standards in order to fulfil their product liability and satisfy insurance requirements for equipment installations in the US. Machines built for use in the US are always subject to approval through the appropriate accredited testing institute, but the final decision on whether a machine is to be commissioned is always made by a local inspector. If the inspector has any doubt as to whether the machine complies with the relevant US standards, he may order a temporary stoppage of the installation. So it is indispensable to comply with the correct standards for the municipality and state where the equipment is being installed. Although the current version of NFPA 79 2007 places restrictions on the use of AWM cables, they continue to be permitted in machines. Section 12.2.7.3 states: „When part of a listed assembly suitable for the intended application, Type AWM shall be permissible.“ This means that AWM cables may be used as part of a listed system provided they are suitable for the intended application. In summary, plant and machinery previously approved for use in manufacturing plants in the US with certification from UL can continue to be repaired, modified or upgraded in accordance with previously existing rules. The NFPA 79 2007 certification is now recognized in many states and should be adhered to for all new equipment installations. Consultation should be made with the appropriate certifying body to ensure compliance for all installations. Modifications to the NFPA 79 standard will not become effective until they have been adopted as applicable provisions by each individual US state. Please feel free to contact us with any questions, inquiries and comments you may have: PH 847 930 5118. The following pages present a broad range of cables that meet the requirements of NFPA 79 Edition 2007.

HELUKABEL® TRAYCONTROL 300-C is a screened, multi-core PVC data and control cable. Cross-sections with PLTC-ER and ITC-ER approval are suitable for the open, unprotected installation in cable trays to machines; the outstanding oil resistance (OIL RES I & II) makes the product ideally suited as connecting and joining cable for control, signal and measuring systems in industrial plants. The flexible cable structure facilitates installation inside and outside of machines and switch cabinets. The double-screening with aluminium foil (100% coverage) and copper braid (approx. 85% coverage) guarantees superior EMC protection. Applications: tool machines, control panels, measuring devices, production automation, cable ducts, renewable energies. EMC = Electromagnetic compatibility. To optimise EMC characteristics, we recommend a large contact area for the copper braiding around the entire circumference on both ends. = The product conforms to the EG Low-Voltage Directive 2006/95/EG. HELUKABEL® TRAYCONTROL 300-C TP is a screened, stranded pair data and control cable. Cross-sections with PLTCER and ITC-ER approval are suitable for the open, unprotected installation in cable trays to machines; the outstanding oil resistance (OIL RES I & II) makes the product ideally suited as connecting and joining cable for control, signal and measuring systems in industrial plants. Two-core cables without ground wire, not ER. Dimensions and specifications may be changed without prior notice.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT Based on a strong and dedicated R&D team, HELUKABEL® is able to offer high-performance products featuring advanced technologies and - whenever an option - customized engineering for special applications and environments. Cables and wires for flexing and torsional applications are at the core of our product range. To assure the integrity of the cable in these processes, a high level of manufacturing expertise is required. Durability against extreme chemical and mechanical load, small bend radii, alternated bending cycles and increased heat resistance are only some of the many other requirements that HELUKABEL® products are able to accommodate. New products are always tested for their reliability under conditions that are relative to their application in a state-of-the-art equipped testing center at the HELUKABEL® Factory in Windsbach/ Germany. In process measurements and random samples taken are a natural part of our quality control process and secure our high manufacturing standards.
A development example: The cargo ship MS Beluga is being pulled by the SkySail using wind power. The traction cable including the used control wire were designed and manufactured by HELUKABEL®.

Length markings The length marking, which cannot be officially verified, is intended merely as an aid (e.g. as a measuring guide or for the purpose of determining how much material is left on the drum). No legal liability can be assumed for incomplete or patchy length markings, or if the actual cable length deviates from that indicated by the length marking.
