Students gather around the lake to honor Donnie Lindsey. The campus community remained brave and optimistic despite the tragic passing of their fellow student.

TTA /rc August 1999 - Students arrived on campus to discover an unusually crowded campus. A record number of freshmen accepted the University's invitation to attend, resulting in some students being pushed into transitional housing. As many as four students were placed in a single lounge in some dorms, while other students were moved into off campus rooms until additional space became available on campus during the second semester. September 1999 - The Virginia Baptists voted to remove major funding from the University after the Board of Trustees voted to include sexual orientation as a part of its non-discrimination policy. The Baptists also expressed displeasure with the creation of the Cellar and with remarks made by University religion professors. However, the University continued to house the Virginia Baptists Historical Society. Thursday, September 16, 1999 Hurricane Floyd arrived in Richmond with heavy wind and rain that cuts power to the University and caused classes to be canceled. Reserve power was directed to the Heilman Dining Center, the Tyler Haynes Commons, and the Robins Center, but full power was not restored to the University until late in the evening. Sunday, September 26, 1999 - Freshman Donnie Lindsey drowned in Westhampton Lake after jumping into the water as a part of a Richmond College Investiture Ceremony tradition. player from Annandale, Va., and a large number of students attended services in his honor both on campus and in Northern Virginia. Thursday, September 30, 1999 Chemistry professor Richard Topham, 56, suffered a massive stroke and collapsed during one of his classes. Despite attempts by students and paramedics, Topham died. Services for Topham were on Oct. 3, and many students and faculty attended. October 1999 - Faculty voted to eliminate physical activity as a requirement for graduation. Although the University continued to stress the importance of exercise and offered physical activities as course options for students, no specific course was required for a diploma. October 21-28,1999 - Students received threatening messages from a man calling himself "Devilman," and claiming to have intimate knowledge of the people he e-mailed. Some students were threatened, which led to an investigation that eventually included both Network Services and University Police.

Tight-end Matt Davis lines up against a member of the U-Mass defensive line. Homecoming weekend involved the Richmond College Formal, a bonfire, and tailgating, culminating in the game on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.

Sunday, October 31, 1999 - Fraternity Row became "Trick or Treat Street," as fraternities opened their lodges to local children and families. The event featured games, small rides, and as much candy as the average school-age child could consume. "Dawson's Creek" visited the University of Richmond to film scenes for an episode involving the search for the perfect college. Some students were selected as extras for the filming, while the rest of the student body was content to follow celebrities around in large herds. December 1999 - The men's water polo team, although without official varsity sport status, finishes second in the nation in competition at the championships in Tucson, Az. The team, which lost to California Polytechnical Institute, hoped the win drew attention to the sport among the campus community. Tuesday, January 18, 2000 - Faculty voted to abolish Health and Sport Science 150: Dimensions of Wellness as a requirement for graduation in favor of a new health program in the future. One suggestion was to continue to require students to take the OCTAA information session, but to supplement Dimensions of Wellness with two topics seminars in health for 90 minutes each week for six weeks.

Tuesday, January 25, 2000 - An unexpected winter storm left more than a foot of snow in the Richmond area and cancelled or delayed classes for the next two days. Many employees voluntarily slept on campus to assist in meal service and other student life affairs. The storm was a part of a cold snap that lasted for almost three weeks and featured overnight low temperatures in the single digits. PLEASE CONTINUE...PAGE 13

Mike Finn and friends attempt to pull the Commons completely over to their side of campus. Midnight Mayhem inspired chaos and anarchy as soon as the clock struck 12 on that fateful eve.

Sunday, January 30, 2000 - On SuperBowl Sunday an ice storm struck campus, snapping phone lines and cutting power to more than 90 percent of the city. The University of Richmond experienced more than 21 hours of lost power, from late Sunday evening to Monday afternoon. Reserve supplies of power kept minimal amounts of electricity going in the Tyler Haynes Commons, the Heilman Dining Center, and the Robins Center, though classes were canceled the following day. Thursday, February 10, 2000 - "A Streetcar Named Desire," which the University Players called the biggest production they have ever undertaken, opened to some of the largest audiences the organization had ever experienced. Actors for the huge production were chosen in advance of Winter Break, giving directors, performers, and techinical staff more than three months to fine tune the musical. Assistant director senior Matt Di Cintio said, "Most college theater doesn't do 'Streetcar' because it's so hard."

Sunday, February 13, 2000 - Freshman Benjamin Tengwell became the third University of Richmond student since December to be hospitalized with meningitis, leading to a campus-wide scare. TECH...man by david gordon It might be a rainy Sunday morning. It's often those times when technical problems threaten to silence the national anthem, kill the power in the scoreboard or shot clock. It even could be a concert, guest speaker or graduation. Whatever the situation, Rich McDonald is there. McDonald, a University events technician, has been with the school for nearly 17 years. He is responsible for sound and other technical concerns for all basketball, football and soccer games, as well as most special events at the Robins Center such as graduation. Despite the pressure on McDonald and his staff to be ready to respond to crisis situations such as a shot clock malfunction, McDonald loves his job. "My job is phat," he said. "I love the job. I a lways tell people I have the best job on campus. "I don't mind the pressure. I don't know how to explain it. To see it all come together, to see the show go off, it's nice to see the transformation. A lot of stuff goes on that people don't even know about, and I like being able to be behind the scenes and know what it takes. To me, it's just my job." McDonald has seen his share of unexpected problems. He remembered a basketball game in which the rim broke and the technical staff had to respond

instantly, he said. The basket was repaired in 20 minutes, he said. Sports Information Director Phil Stanton recalled McDonald responding to a call at home on a rainy Sunday morning last fall. The athletic department asked McDonald to repair a frayed electrical cord leading to the field hockey scoreboard and McDonald arrived at campus upbeat and willing to work. Barry Barnum, associate director of athletics for external affairs, has known McDonald for more than 20 years. He said it would be impossible to think of one time when McDonald stood out. "There's just too many," he said. "I can't give you a time when he knocked one out of the park because he always does." To athletes and sports administrators, this is some of what makes McDonald special. "He's more than just a sound man," Stanton said. "Rich is just tremendous. He's always real, real friendly and is just so pleasant to work with. He is as cooperative as anyone we work with. He makes events so easy." Barnum said: "Rich is a wonderful person. He's the most professional, dependable person I know. When the University receives praise for pulling off an event, most of the credit goes to Rich. He's totally committed to the University."
