DEP AR'rMENT.

W c think something of an explanation for the delay of this our first issue of the present volume is due no less to editors and manages than to our patrons.

An irnavoidable delay in the appointment of our business manager is our apology for appearing so late.

A true conception of the time and labor necessary to prepare the first edition of a new volume of a college paper can never be attained by one that has had no experience. Advertisements must be secured, the subscription list must be revised, and many other things, each demanding time, must be cared for.

Successive numbers will not require so much time, and the plea of lack for time will not again be urged. We sincerely hope we shall be able to have each succeeding bsne ready in due time, and we certainly propose to use our utmost endeavors as editors an1l managers to secure this end.

Shall we have the co-operation of the students ? We desire to have a full n umber of pages in each issue, and to have the pages full not only of words but of ideas.

Fellow-students, give us these and we will give you a paper that will compare favorablr with you1· highest idea] of college journalism.

This issue is to us both a beginning and an ending-:i beginning of a new volume and the expiration of the term of office for the present corps of editors. As those who are to give way to others we desire to say we have done our best (under the circumstances), and " mortal man can-do no more." Our experiences

ham been varied and numerous. Sometimes we have sailed over troubled waters and sometimes (not very many) our editorial bark has glided over the wat<'L' when only a gentle breeze rippled its surfare.

(This latter experience has been chiefly during vacation, when we almost forgot the name and meaning of editor.) w·e have, during our short career, once bad our most effective tool wrested from our grasp and hurled away while we stood powerless to resist. We have been turned . carelessly away when we solicited literary contributions.

We have been subjected to all the criticisms and unfriendly thrust tc, which servants are always subjectedespecially those who serve without compensation. When we think over the dark side of our experience we almost wonder that we have survived, and, like the retiring editors of a certain religious paper who recently published ihei1· "longfarewell," we feel like E:iayingthat there is safety in the woods, and thither will we fly and forget the lost-no, surrenderedexperience of bygone days. "Every cloud has a sil ve1· lining." .We suppose so.

Lessons will be learned from such work.

Hence, ye incoming corps, be not discouraged by the magnitude or unpleasant~ ness of the work before you. We bPspeak for you a more successful and tranquil season than that through which we have served. You have not examinations and spring-tide to contend against.

You may be more influential in your efforts to secure the co-operation of fellowstudents than we have bee1i. Tell them that the Messengei·is their paper, and if

you can induce them to credit your message you will have gained your point and success is yours. We do not fee\' cou~trained to make a long valedictory and give you a volume of advice and warnings.

It is not the turning ove1· of a government by one political party to another.

Your policy and management may differ from and in some respects im prove upon ours. But the general policy will be the same, and words from us are unnecessary. We may whisper a word to you, "But for goodness' sake, don't say I told you."

Ye litemry editors, do not publish everything you receive. You

may have to apologize for sometimes failing to do so, · but that will be better than what might be if you publish every_ thing. Ye local men, remember some men are hurt by the truth (not really hurt, but hav e "their feelings hurt) if put in th e form of a jest.

The ti me of the Editorial and Excharige editor is too precious to allow any interruption to listen to words from us. So we will simply doff the hat and reLire to parts unknown, but from which we can occasionally learn how the new "Eds." are doing.

The fifty-second session of Richmond College opened on Thursday, September 20th. The number of matriculates up to • date is one hundred and fifty, and more ai·e expected to come in. Fifty-fi\·e of them, including two Presbyterians, c>nter as candidates for the ministry.

The first evening was devoted to a stud~nt's prayer meeting, conducted by our popular and well-beloved Chairman of the Faculty, Professor H. H. Harris.

Several of the city pastors and Sundayschool superintendents were present and gave the students a c01·dial invitation to unite with them in their Sunday-school and church work.

Second Baptist, Hon. T. H. Ellett., of Grace, Rev. S. C. Clopton, of Clay street, and Brother Ryland, of Venable, gave uc; excellent talks. Dr. Wm. D. Thomas, Professor of Philosophy, spoke quite earnestly upon the duty of private devotion.

We trust that as the session has commenced with an earnest devotional spirit so it may continue throughout, and that we shall day by day be mindful of each other's feelings, I' lend a helping hand '' to those with whom we are thrown, and strive to live for the glory and honor "of Him who is the Father and Protector of us all."

In classification of the students by rcsidenct, Virginia leads, Maryland and Tennessee with six each come in for second honor, West Virginia has five, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Alabama have two apiece, the rest come from Massachusetts, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, California, and Mexico.

On Friday evening, September 21st, the Philologian Society helcl its annual ' C. Dorsey weL reunion. President S. corned those from the briny ocean who have walked arm in arm with some "gentle dew-drop" along the whitened sands of the great deep, and then those from the mountains, whose homes are situated among the grandest scenes of nature.

Y. M. C. A. The piâ&#x20AC;˘esident, Mr. H. F. Williami,, in a few pointed remarks, opened the first meeting of the session and then introduced l\fr. S. C. Dorsey, who delivered the address of welcome to the new stndents.

Mr. Dorsey's speech was well prepared and delivered, and all seemed to be profited by the thoughts it contained.

Mr. Charles E. Thomas, Secretary of the City Y. M. C. A., conducted a series of questions and answers relating to the work of the Association. The talks were interspersed with earnest prayers and songs of praise.

After this, Mr. W. 0. Carver, of Tennessee, wl,o received the Reader's Medal in June last, read a selection entitled "Not Every Pyramid Egyptian."

Mr. J. M. Wilbur, of South Carolina, Declaimer's Medal in '87, presentP.d '' The Polish Boy." Both gentlemen did exceedingly well in their several pat'ts.

All now adjouned to the Mess Hall, where the old students had prepared a repast for the new. The Hall presented a bright and cheerful appearance, and the very walls seemed to whisper, " Welcome."

Misses Jannette Harris, Minnie Brown, Fannie Jones, and Katie Harrison were the "Maids of Honor" who lent enchantment to the scene as they gracefully moved from table to table, ana' passed the dainties to the admiring but bashful boys.

Martin who had left "a very pleasant place," (i. e. a plush covered chair o'er shadowed by "calico") to be with us, gave in his "experience." Mr. C. R. Cruikshanks eloquently said, "Three months have passed since we bathed our brow and brain in the classic shades of Richmond College."

Mr. C's touching eloquence could well be accounted for, when we were told that a short time sirice while he " lay sick of a fever," he had to watch over him one whose name brings ¡to him the sweetest memories.

On the following evening the Mu Sigma Rho Society threw open her halls.

President W. 0. Carver, in a solid, wellprepared, and pleasant address of welcome, greeted the students-both old and new. The Mu Sigs have ever been noted for their soundness of argument and beauty and flow of language. Mr. Carver well sustained her reputation. " The Ancient Traitor " was the presented by Mr. J. S. Irby, the orator of the occasion. Mr. Irby is a pleasing and graceful speaker, and holds the attention of his entire audience.

ExPOSITION.-Tbe

Virginia Agricultural, Mechanical,. and Tobacco Exposition opened in Richmond October 3d, and will continue until November 21st. A grand parnde, consisting of aldermtU, police, infantry, cavalry, artillery, firemen, citizens, and Buffalo Bill's Wild West, passed through the streets on to the grounds, Mrs. Governor Fitzhugh Lee gave a signal by plucking a flower from an electric button, the machinery was set in motion, and the gt·eat display was thrown open to the

world.

The main building is 680 feet long, 340 wide, two stories high, and has six towers piercing the clouds and forty-six flags floating high in the breeze. One can walk in thi1:1building a whole day and see new objects of interest at every turn.

rals and forestry, Indians, Mexicans, Chinese, and in fact everything . from the size of a micrncosrn up to ''the world and his wife" were on hand to be seen.

The students gave the Faculty a holiday the first day of the Exposition, in order that they might enjoy Buffalo Bill's Wild West. As the boys had nothing else to do, they went too. The Wild West was the great attraction of the occasion. Buffalo Bill (Hon. Wm. F. Cody), who has spent a large part, of his life on the plains, is tall and expressive looking. He was dressed in a buckskin coat, corduro) pants, boots reaching to his thighs, and a sombrero hat. As he rode before the grand stand, he lifted his hat and said, "Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to present to you scenes and pictures from the Fat· West."

Three Western girls on horseback, a number of cowboys, and some Indians led off in the grand scenes. In the com. pany there were 100 Indians, among whom were genuine warriors of the late hostile Sioux, with the renowned Red Shirt and Rocky Bear, camped in priroiti ve wigwams. A camp of one hundred scouts, hunters, frontiermen, Mexicans, cowboys, and a separate camp of ,vestern American girls were near the "dwellings" of the Red-Men. There were one hundred and fifty Ind_ian ponies, wild bronchos, mustangs, and burros, a large herd of buffalo, and several deer.

The scenes were true to life, but would have to be seen to be fully appreciated.

The race between the cowboy, Mexican, and Indian was truly exciting, but when the attacks on the "stage coach" and upon the "settler's cabin" were made, the excitement knew no bounds. Two of the students risked their lives "across the

Our connection with the Messenge1'has been of a most pleasant character. Through the many exchanges coming to us every day we have become acquainted with the colleges and universities, which stand like so many lighthouses over our land. Criticisms adverse and favorable have been given,and some severe and pleasant ones received; but it . was done, we hope, in a spirit of utmost kindness, and no harm has re sulted from it. Knowi1ng the incoming exchange editor, and having great respect for his talents and wisdom, we bespeak a successful career for him, and are confident that his department will form an interesting feature of the .Messenge1'.

The July-August, which is a double number of The Owl, is a magazine highly creditable to the College of Ottawa.

The engravings, showing the different departments of the college, are sufficient proof that its students hav(l all that is necessary for the cultivation of the mind.

The Speculum, of Michigan Agricultural College, is an intereeting paper. " Elizabethan England" gives a terse and concise view of England's condition during the reign of that queen; the article is a good one, as is the one on 1' Progress in Manufactures."

Lehigh Bun· upon their Octobet· number; its short, crisp editorials are just what is needed in a university magazine.

The articles in September edition of

Olio are somewhat lengthy and "long drawn out"; however, there are many difficulties attending thfJ publishing of the first number of the session.

The Eai·lhamite, for October, is filled with good things: "Technical Education," "The :r'heologian and Scientist," and " Man's Responsibility " exhibit much thought and careful preparation.

We thank the Pacific Phai·os for the article on "The Opium War."

College Ramblei· holds a' high place among our exchanges.

Both "Semi-Annual" and " Annual" of Hollins Institute are admirable.

We · wish the young ladies would issue a monthly; such a magazine is expected from the highest institution of its kind in the South.

The Northwestern has the following to say, which we commend to the careful , perusal of those for whom intended : "He who cannot remove himself from his book,;; long enough to read the college paper, cares but little for things going on around him, and has no sympathy with _ his fellow-students.

We believe nothing does more toward binding the students together with a common interest than a college paper."

The students at Dartmouth have subscribed $1,700 for Lhc support of the nine.-Ex. The Yale News pays each Senior editor from $250 to $275 a year.-Ex. The student cards given to students entering German universities admit holders to the theatres at half price, shield them from arrest from the civil authorities, and give free admission to many of the ga1leries and museums of Europe.-;-Ex. .

The Dartmouth · faculty has decided that the students must drop either footba11, base-ba11, or general athletics, because of the excessive amount of time and money required to conduct them all.-Ex. G. P. Cogswe11,Harvard, '88, broke the inter-collegiate record for the halfmile run at the spring meeting of the · Harvard Athletic Association on May 5.
