Down in the valley enshrouded in gloom, Dreary and sad are the wearisor i10 days; Far, far away towa.rcl the mountains that loom, Distant and restful, I longingly gaze. Longingly look to those Round whose summits Breez es that drive away And render delightful
lovely, blue heights sweet breezes perpetually play, mist-laden nights, · the long summer day.
Brightly the sun in his glory and pride, O'er towering summit and calm, gray peak Pours his rich beam s, while storm-clouds glide Far down below, and o'er the vales break. Glorious mountains! so free an·d enchanting! My spirit i'n fancy o' er rock-cliffs would roam, 'Mid scenes that forever my memory are haunting, For there-hallowed spot-is childhood's sweet home. There dw ell the friends who in yout-h's early morning Wer e bound to my heart with tenderest ties; Ever suspicion and jealousy scorning, Our friendship was pure as the star-ligpted skies.
