EDITOR’S NOTE

I’ve mentioned more than once in this column that being editor of the magazine gives me the enviable opportunity to talk to a wide variety of Spiders with all sorts of backgrounds. Ridiculously accomplished first-year students, impressive seniors and alumni, professors who study everything from rats to pop music to constitutional law — I’ve never stopped being surprised by the people who end up in these pages. For this issue, I even got to call former Cincinnati Red Sean Casey, ’96, for goodness’ sake. The Reds have been my team since I was 10 years old. Another of the stories that I especially enjoyed doing this issue was the interview with Shannon Kelley, B’87, the new president of the University of Richmond Alumni Association. You can read it on Page 44. She wanted to talk in person rather than via Zoom, a personal touch I greatly appreciated, so we chatted at a conference table in Puryear Hall. One of the points that she came back to several times is the importance of having a diversity of voices represented on the URAA’s 28-member board. She talked at length about how honest conversations among people with different perspectives and experiences strengthens URAA’s ability to represent and serve all alumni. The same impulse is guiding the university this fall as it launches an important opinion survey that I encourage you to participate in. The university has commissioned the highly respected Gallup organization to gather Spiders’ perspectives on naming and renaming buildings on campus to help it establish principles and guidelines for these decisions. The issue came to the forefront in the spring with the release of university-sponsored research on the lives and views of Robert Ryland and Douglas S. Freeman, for whom two buildings on campus are named. A variety of perspectives arose on campus when the president and the board, which is charged with the power to name buildings, announced their decision to use the buildings’ names to tell a fuller story of UR’s history rather than remove the men’s names from them. After a number of campus discussions, they concluded it

was necessary to gather additional input from the campus community. They pressed the pause button and established a commission to examine the issue. (For more on the commission, see Page 8.) The results of this fall’s Gallup survey will inform the commission as it develops its recommendations. It’s an important opportunity for all of us who are Spiders to bring our many and varied perspectives to the table for an honest conversation about the values that ought to drive the university’s decisions on this matter. It is a chance, as Shannon so well put it, for every voice to be heard and to better understand perspectives that may differ from our own. I urge you to complete the anonymous survey when the invitation arrives in your email inbox in October.

OPPORTUNITY MISSED I eagerly opened the most recent issue with the expectation of reading an in-depth look at the university’s debate over the naming of buildings on campus. What better venue for a reasoned discussion than a publication written for the people who care most about the university’s future? But aside from a brief mention in the editor’s note, the topic was ignored. That same note emphasized that “the harder course” often means confronting things that are challenging. Sadly, the magazine took the more comfortable path. I recognize the issue was a tribute to the worthy legacy President Crutcher leaves behind. AN INTRODUCTION By Kevin F. Hallock, president

Grateful and ready When Richmond came calling, I couldn’t look away because its strengths and values are consistent with my aspiration to lead a life of service. I feel grateful and lucky. When I was finishing graduate school, a mentor told me that to be a successful academic, I would have to be excellent not only at teaching and research, but also service. That advice resonated powerfully with me, for I had grown up admiring how my mother and father served their community as a nurse practitioner and professor, respectively. Throughout my career, I have aspired to lead a life of service. That is why I couldn’t look away when I was offered the UR presidency. I felt enormously grateful and lucky to have the opportunity to join a community with the same profound commitment to service instilled in me by my parents. I have much to learn about UR, but I can plainly see that part of the secret of the university’s success is the staff and faculty’s near obsession with serving our educational mission. I met a Spider parent this summer who credited her children’s rich learning with the deep “access and relationships” they have with their professors. I was moved but not surprised, given that

time and again, I have heard from faculty about innovative teaching that undoubtedly inspires students. Good mentors are rare and invaluable, and the Spider community is crawling with them. I am grateful and excited to work alongside UR’s students, staff, faculty, alumni, and friends to make this great institution even greater. Today, UR is a leading liberal arts institution defined not only by academic excellence, but also by high standards and strong values, terrific athletics and extracurricular opportunities, vibrant professional schools and community engagement, and the genuine intellectual curiosity I see in so many. I would like to thank my predecessors — and all Spiders — for laying this foundation of excellence, especially President Ron and Dr. Betty Neal Crutcher, who welcomed my wife, Tina, and me with open arms. I am also grateful for the university’s values, including intellectual curiosity, resilience, integrity, inclusivity and equity, and responsibility for the ethical consequences of our ideas and actions. They align with leader-

ship values I hold dear: integrity, transparency, effort, inclusion, well-being, collegiality, and giving the benefit of the doubt. On this last one, I believe being kind, caring, empathetic, and patient as much as possible is essential. People are often so busy that we sometimes work at cross purposes and don’t hear one another. Universities can and must serve as models of constructive dialogue, especially across difference. As is often the case in complex institutions, not everyone here agrees on everything — and that is good — but everyone cares and wants to make Richmond even better. I believe the best way to do so is to make it better together. Thank you, Spider community, for entrusting me to help lead UR in its next chapter of success. I envision Richmond becoming the nation’s best small university, where everyone feels the enormous sense of belonging Tina and I have experienced thus far. It will take patience, perseverance, and giving each other the benefit of the doubt. And it won’t happen overnight. But together we will get there. I am grateful and lucky to be embarking on this journey with all of you.

A commission is leading an inclusive process to develop principles to guide naming decisions for buildings, professorships, programs, and other campus entities.

In May, the board of trustees and the president announced the creation of an advisory commission to develop and recommend principles and criteria for the naming and renaming of campus buildings, professorships, programs, and other elements of campus named for individuals or entities. “Our commitment to a broad, inclusive process is reflected in both the composition and charge,” they wrote in May. The nine-member commission includes trustees and faculty, staff, student, and alumni representatives who were selected by their respective representative bodies. Christy Coleman, executive director of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, and John Roush, a UR trustee and president emeritus of Centre College, are co-chairs. The charge instructed the commission to develop “clear and rigorous principles” for future naming decisions, to consider recommendations that address the removal or modification of names already in use, and to recommend guidelines for honorific namings, such as whether they should be of limited duration.

The charge also instructed the commission to “ensure a transparent and inclusive process” that includes consultation with internal and external experts, review of other universities’ experiences, hosting of campus discussions and open forums, and a wide-ranging survey of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and parents. The survey, which will roll out this fall, will be conducted by the education research practice of Gallup Inc., a highly respected, independent research firm. Respondents will be contacted by Gallup directly and remain anonymous. Top-line survey results will be available to the university community in the spring. “The survey findings will be an important resource to the commission, and we hope that you will take the time to participate,” Coleman and Roush wrote in a July message. The commission also announced plans to share information about other universities’ efforts to address naming issues and consider key questions related to naming issues. Historian and President Emeritus Ed Ayers was expected to facilitate the first session, which was tentatively scheduled for September.

Despite the challenges of a worldwide pandemic, Spiders received approximately 815 undergraduate degrees and 250 advanced degrees during May commencement ceremonies. The Class of 2021 includes 63 international students who represent 24 countries. More than 230 Arts and Sciences graduates conducted research, and Jepson graduates logged more than 26,000 service-learning and internship hours. In the Robins School of Business, the Student Managed Investment Fund’s growth and value fund rose to a combined value of more than $1 million this year, the first time it has hit this milestone. ACCOLADES

Abroad again

Four 2021 graduates received Fulbright English teaching assistantships to live, work, and study abroad during the current academic year. The students will go to South Korea, Brazil, the Netherlands, and Mexico. Nine sophomores and juniors, the most students at one time in UR’s history, received Gilman scholarships from the U.S. State Department to support international educational experiences. They will study in Rwanda, Uganda, Spain, Denmark, Italy, Switzerland, Ireland, and South Korea during the 2021–22 academic year. Forty-four University of Richmond students have been offered Gilman scholarships since the program started in 2001.

Law professor ASHLEY DOBBS commented on Starbucks’ application for trademark rights to use its name on a sports stadium or similar venue. “Either it is actively looking to make a deal to sponsor a venue, or it wants to protect its right to potentially use its name in that manner,” she said. Leadership studies professor JULIAN HAYTER spoke about the significance of Arthur Ashe becoming the first African American champion of a sport created by the progeny of English aristocrats who also developed the trans-Atlantic slave trade. “Isn’t it ironic, then, that he goes back into a space created by those very aristocrats and beats them at their own game?”

Students have new curricular options this fall.

Sign us up UR has made several recent moves to increase academic opportunities for students. Health studies — one of the School of Arts and Sciences’ most popular majors — is UR’s newest academic department. The elevation provides new options for faculty and students, particularly related to global health and epidemiology. The department provides a multidisciplinary foundation for studying health, health care practice and policy, health disparities, and population health. Health care is a leading sector of the economy, with health expenditures accounting for nearly a fifth of the U.S. gross domestic product. In addition to the new academic department, UR has also added new programs in Africana studies and in data science and analytics. A suite of required courses is cur-

rently under development for a major and minor in Africana studies. The program arose after initial petitioning by students and will launch officially in fall 2022. It will be housed in Arts and Sciences and offer courses across disciplines, including through the Robins School of Business and the Jepson School of Leadership Studies. New opportunities in data science and data analytics will be available through a new concentration for computer science and mathematics students, a business analytics concentration for business majors, and a new bachelor’s degree offered through the School of Professional and Continuing Studies. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts employment in data-related fields will grow by 30% over the next 10 years.

GEN ED REVISION Richmond’s faculty voted to revise the general education curriculum for the first time in 30 years. The new curriculum will retain many features of the current curriculum while strengthening emphasis on numeracy and written and oral communication.

Finance professor TOM ARNOLD spoke about retail expectations for Halloween. “Will there be a COVID vaccine for children under 12 by then, and will parents prioritize getting their kids vaccinated quickly?” he said. “Traditional trick-or-treating might hinge on that vaccine.” Geography professor MARY FINLEY-BROOK noted that pipeline routing “follows the path of least resistance” across land that is often cheaper because of discriminatory practices for a story examining the concentration of natural gas pipelines in counties with higher social vulnerability.

RENEWAL Campus started to look more normal over the summer as approximately 240 students cycled in and out of campus housing. Students stayed to conduct research, practice with their athletic teams, and participate in other opportunities. It was a welcome contrast with the previous year, when new COVID-19 restrictions largely emptied campus during the summer months. ADMISSION

Redlining update

UR’s Digital Scholarship Lab has received grant support of up to $150,000 for its award-winning Mapping Inequality: Redlining in New Deal America project, a collaboration with Virginia Tech. Mapping Inequality — which was the subject of the feature “Curbed Appeal” in the previous issue of this magazine — is frequently used by journalists and scholars studying and investigating redlining, racially motivated lending discrimination. The grant — called an ACLS Digital Extension Grant — was awarded by the American Council of Learned Societies with support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The grants are designed to extend the reach of established digital initiatives to new communities of users.

The Class of 2025 has arrived, and it is impressive.

The university has hired its first director of admission for diversity outreach and partnerships. The position is designed to strengthen UR’s efforts to attract, recruit, and enroll a talented and diverse student body, including the recruitment of first-generation college students and scholars from community-based organization partners. Michael Pina comes to UR from Green Farms Academy, a preK-12 coeducational school in Connecticut where he was director of college guidance. He has also served on national boards and committees, including the Common Application board of directors and the National Association for College Admissions Counseling. At UR, he oversees the diversity recruitment and outreach, international, and off-campus programming teams in the office of enrollment management.

NO FINAL NUMBERS YET? Each summer, universities experience a phenomenon that admission professionals call “summer melt.” The metaphor refers to the small number of admitted students who confirm their place in the class with a deposit but then change plans. For this reason, the university waits until Oct. 1 each year to compile official enrollment figures.

In a year when few high school students could visit college campuses, UR recorded its largest applicant pool in its history. Nearly 14,000 students applied for admission. The record applicants aren’t completely surprising. “Because many schools including UR went test-optional, students considered schools they might not have in the past,” said Stephanie Dupaul, vice president for enrollment management. What many applicants might not realize, though, she said, is that UR has a holistic admission process and that test scores had always been only part of an applicant’s consideration. Also contributing to the record pool is the in-person instruction UR offered throughout the 2020–21 academic year. “We delivered an in-person student experience,” Dupaul

said. “We stood out for our ability to provide what students value — personal relationships with faculty, staff, and other students.” As of Aug. 1, the university expected an incoming first-year class of more than 800 students — the final figure was not available at press time — who come from more than 640 high schools in 43 states and 36 countries. They have the highest average high school GPA of any entering class and are among the most diverse, with more than 29% domestic students of color and 8% international students. First-generation college students make up 14% of the class, and 17% received federal Pell grants. “These are strong enrollment outcomes in this unusual year,” Dupaul wrote in a message to the campus community.

MY INFLUENCES My parents are community-focused. My mom was always involved in her church and the greater community. We talked about it a lot. You might not understand it when you’re 9 or 10, but it’s the routine of, “OK, the world is bigger than what I’m doing.” My dad is a medical case manager and was a social worker in 1960s Philly. He was always very frank with me about what you’re up against as a Black man in America. MY DETERMINATION My sophomore year of high school, I was blessed that someone paid my tuition for Delaware County Christian School, a private school. It was three buses and a train away. After my sophomore year, I worked summers at the school to put myself through. It was humbling, but I was like, “This is real life. You want something, you’ve got to earn it.” I grew up a lot in high school.

MY ENTREPRENEURIAL STREAK One of my best friends, Kayla Connelly, ’21, asked me to start a branch of College Truckers with her. I was going to London the next semester so I thought, “Why not? I need some cash.” Kayla ended up not doing it. It felt cool to have my own operation. Yes, I ran a storage and moving company in college, and I also studied poverty reduction. It seems like those things don’t correlate, but I enjoyed both. MY COMMUNITY Kayla and I restarted the Multicultural Student Solidarity Network and advocated for a multicultural house on campus. We talked to students to get opinions, and I became close to a freshman who was from an inner city like me. She said, “There’s no space for me to feel comfortable. I want to go home.” After we submitted our proposal, the university made a plan to create a multicultural space in Whitehurst. MY REFLECTIONS When you don’t come from a family that has considerable resources, it’s a catch-22 to enter a space like college.

Higher education is necessary to live a full life, but it can come with steep costs. I hear a lot of people say, “I had to get through college.” It’ll be an indicator that the university is doing something right if more voices say, “I enjoyed college,” and everyone feels like they own a part of where they live. MY SENIOR YEAR I never had that panic moment: “The world is going to end because I don’t know what I’m going to do.” I was more upset the social dynamics were disrupted. It’s probably the last time when you have that many close friends so close together. I don’t know how you quantify the cost of the world being subsumed by tragedy every day. But you’ve still got to make it through, and that’s what we did. It wasn’t the senior year I imagined, but I’m forever grateful.

MY ROOTS I’m from West Philly. I always have to acknowledge a heavy presence of poverty and violence, but I was mostly shielded from it by the family I had at home. My childhood memories are spending time with my brothers and sister. In summers, our parents went to work, and we played outside all day. We may be the last generation to do that. It wasn’t until high school or Richmond where I was like, “Oh, this is not the normal for most Americans.” I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

WELL DONE At graduation, Tann received the Leonard S. Goldberg Award, which recognizes a graduating senior “who cares deeply about the institution and works tirelessly to improve it.” Goldberg, the award’s namesake, served as vice president of student development from 1987 to 2006.

MY NEXT STEPS A partner and I are closing a seed round of $2 million for our company, Relai, a supply chain and logistics startup that aims to transform last-mile delivery. We think it can make a big difference for local retailers.

Can you share the story behind one of your favorite pictures on your office wall? —Cathy Shi, ’17 Hundreds, if not thousands, of photos, paintings, drawings, and the like cover every square inch of my office walls. I have an emotional attachment to them all. Most make me laugh or at least smile. I believe people need more positive emotions. However, one magazine photo is my favorite. About 35 years ago, the movie The Paper Chase changed my teaching life. Professor Kingsfield teaches a first-year law class at Harvard using a very demanding Socratic method. The students hate him at first because he forces them to learn deeply rather than memorize. By the end of the semester, they appreciate what he is trying to accomplish. When I left the movie theater that evening, Professor Kingsfield had become my role model. I taped a photo of the marvelous actor John Houseman

playing Professor Kingsfield on my office door. That photo is the last thing I look at before I go to class every day. It reminds me of the importance of my job and the time that I spend with my students. If you could co-teach with a member of the Beatles, which one would you teach with and why? —Joe Nelson, ’11 My wife of 51 years has always had a bit of a crush on Paul McCartney. She would be perturbed if I did not select him. I first saw the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. I last saw Paul in concert in 2019. What struck me most was that he seemed as enthusiastic and energetic at 77 as he did at 22. He was singing some of the same songs and appeared just as delighted to be there as when he was young. I guess he is another one of my role models. What has been the most challenging teaching experience over your tenure?

—Jaclyn Radonis Wood, ’00 I teach at a wonderful university, and virtually all of my students really want to learn. The number of problems I encounter is minuscule. My students rarely seem upset with me. Instead, they talk about problems with parents, their love life, roommates, mental illness, and the like. That can be incredibly sad. They are bright young people who are struggling, and often, viable solutions are not easily available. Teaching accounting is always easy. Helping a student who is suffering is tough. Being a college student is never easy. The challenges are everywhere. As you think about the next generation of accountants and auditors, what skills will be most critical for their success? —Erin Shannon, ’99 The purpose of college is to help form the foundation for a life that is thoughtful and satisfying and makes the world a better place. Whether a person becomes an accountant or a bus driver, I want my students to think beyond themselves. Students need to read deeply, have

thoughtful conversations, look at a world beyond their own boundaries, and examine their own biases. In my classes, I often use a threeword motto: “Figure it out.” A desire to learn how to look at a problem and figure it out is the skill that was most critical 50 years ago and is today, regardless of a student’s major.

Is there something that intrinsically motivates you to impact so many students’ lives? —Russ Higgins, ’06 When I went to college, I did not think my professors truly cared about me as a human being. I resented that then and now. From the first day I walked into class as the teacher, I have wanted to help my students become

better human beings. We need more teachers who want students to leave class every day as more knowledgeable people who will become better thinkers and more thoughtful members of society. Teachers can save the world, and I very much appreciate the opportunity to call myself one.

my older friends. In all honesty, I usually enjoy talking with 20-year-old students more than I do talking with 32-year-old or 42-year-old adults.

If, as predicted, accounting will be handled mostly by algorithms in the future, should robots pay humans the taxes for lost jobs? —Olga Sokolova, ’17 With the growth of artificial intelligence, I believe the world might well face a shortage of jobs before too long. I love the recent entrepreneurial spirit that is growing, seemingly

across the planet. Where possible, I think human beings were meant to start and grow their own businesses, to be their own bosses, to manage their own destinies. I hope algorithms never get in the way of the human spirit. Hopefully, continuing entrepreneurial growth will provide adequate tax revenues so that robots do not have to learn

how to complete a 1040 form. You have always been a teacher who connects with students. How have you changed your approach to making these connections and staying relevant to students over the years? —Jeff Hendrey, B’90 I have always tried to find the parts of my subject matter that are interesting.

I try to approach learning as the solving of a puzzle. I like to set up complex problems situated on desert islands or faraway planets (“You are on the planet Krypton, and you are asked to be the accountant for a local bookstore ...”). I do not try to connect with the students by acting like I am 20, but that does not mean

that subjects cannot be interesting to both of us. Often, I will send an email to my students and write something like, “Here is what I read in today’s Wall Street Journal. Why would a company do this?” I love to talk with my students about books I have read and plays I have seen. They are often more open to those conversations than

How do you make your work a passion and not just a job? —Matt Blanchard, ’95 Teaching is difficult because there is very little positive reinforcement. Students often hope you will get sick and not show up for class. No student comes by to congratulate a teacher on a great class. It can be an emotional challenge. If I am lucky, three or four times each year, someone from years ago will email me to thank me for something I said or did when they were in college. That helps a lot. A note from a former student reminds me that my work has a purpose and gives me the energy to get up and do what needs to be done. I often compare college teachers to Johnny Appleseed. They plant a seed not knowing whether they will even be around in a few years to see what results from their efforts.

HEALTH EQUITY Camilla Nonterah, assistant professor of health psychology, received $50,000 in grant funding from the American Society of Transplantation to improve equity in organ transplants. Her research project aims to help reduce disparities in access to kidney transplantation. “Getting an organ transplant is often accompanied by several challenges, especially for renal patients of color where an individual’s living circumstances, their economic status, or simply where they live geographically can be obstacles,” Nonterah said.

UR’s first Jepson Scholar, Sabrina Escobar Miranda, ’19, earned graduation with distinction from the University of Oxford. Funded by support from Robert S. Jepson Jr., B’64 and GB’75, and Alice Andrews Jepson, the program provides competitive scholarships for graduating seniors from the Jepson School of Leadership Studies who pursue a master’s degree at Oxford. “At Oxford, I got to learn from, and in some cases speak to, important people, including former Brazilian president Fernando Henrique Cardoso, former Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos, Prince Charles, and a former member of Parliament,” Escobar Miranda said. “Everyone who holds an important leadership role in the world comes to Oxford at some point.” This fall, she began her next step, a ninemonth master’s program at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

Much-needed shelter

A Virginia nonprofit will strengthen its services as a result of the university’s decreased need for isolation and quarantine space. The university arranged to donate five double-wide modular units to Family Crisis Support Services in Norton, Virginia. Richmond purchased the units as part of its response to COVID-19. FCSS provides emergency shelter and transitional housing to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault and offers emergency shelter for victims of homelessness. The donation allows FCSS to increase its number of available beds and reduce spending on hotel rooms, Marybeth Matthews-Adkins, executive director of FCSS, wrote in a thank-you letter. “The donation of these units is an absolute blessing,” she wrote.

FALL CAMPAIGN The weeklong Spiders Helping Spiders event will begin on Oct. 21 to support giving to financial aid, the student emergency fund, and the career opportunity fund. Since its launch in 2018, the program has raised nearly $850,000 of direct support for Spiders in need.

The year-plus pandemic has led to hardships for many — during the 2020–21 academic year, the university saw a 75% spike in student requests for reevaluation of their financial needs. The Spider family stepped up to meet the needs of students during the third annual UR Here Giving Day in May. More than 1,900 alumni, parents, and other supporters contributed $1.2 million of support. “UR Here is a special opportunity to bring our community together, showcase areas of UR that Spiders can support philanthropically, and celebrate the impact of giving,” said Kim Lebar, director of annual giving. “We are deeply grateful to those who took part in giving day this year.” Spiders supported more than 160

funds representing five impact areas — academics, athletics, greatest needs, student life, and well-being — as well as opportunities to honor outgoing President Ronald A. Crutcher and Betty Neal Crutcher through a scholarship for first-generation students with financial need and by supporting the Dialogue and Inclusion Fund. Collectively, the new Crutcher funds raised more than $191,000 on giving day. Additional new funds in 2021 included the CAPS Access Fund and Spiders Support Recovery. Many alumni and families offered matches and challenges to encourage others to join them in supporting UR. One matched gifts to financial aid up to a total of $60,000 and another matched gifts to the career opportunity fund up to a total of $15,000.

Intruder alert

Faculty and students participated in a study mapping heat patterns across Virginia.

Hot or not? Hector Gomez, ’22, and Sarah Page Steffens, ’22, had an unusual undergraduate research assignment this summer: Take a drive. The students — under the guidance of Todd Lookingbill, associate professor of geography, the environment, and biology — took part in a heat-mapping study that involved more than a dozen colleges and universities gathering data on streets across Virginia on July 15. It is the largest heat-mapping study of its kind ever conducted. The goal of the project, dubbed Heat Watch, is to determine how heat varies across communities to understand better where residents are most at risk during extreme heat waves. Lookingbill and his students organized dozens of community volunteers to drive routes in different parts of the city of Richmond. They recorded air temperatures and humidity throughout the day using specially designed thermal sensors attached to the cars. “Our team is building on data collected during a previous temperature campaign in 2017, and that data is already being used by Richmond and in student-authored publications to help identify vulnerable areas in our community,” Lookingbill said.

“These are targets for new trees, parks, and other cooling measures.” Data generated by this project will tie into multiple existing programs and initiatives in Virginia, including public health, energy efficiency, climate change mitigation, land use planning, equity and social justice, and community partnerships. Researchers are using data from the 2017 efforts to analyze comparative data and create new focal points. For example, they are working to identify areas in Richmond that are getting hotter or cooler, increasing focus on parts of the city that were underrepresented in the initial sampling, and comparing Richmond’s temperatures to those collected at the same time in other locations across the commonwealth. The UR team also collaborated with the Science Museum of Virginia and VCU to measure particulate matter and ozone levels, which relate to air quality. “Community science initiatives like this heat-mapping campaign have contributed immensely to our understanding of how environmental stressors are not felt equally across communities here in the commonwealth,” said Jeremy Hoffman, chief scientist at the Science Museum.

FACULTY EXCELLENCE Lookingbill was one of 12 recipients of the State Council of Higher Education’s most recent Outstanding Faculty Awards. In 2013, the National Park Service’s National Capital Region named him Researcher of the Year.

A new course is giving students expertise in cybersecurity. Accounting professor Nancy Bagranoff in the Robins School of Business launched the course, which is open to all students, amid the drumbeat of news about data breaches, ransomware attacks, and other cyberthreats. “Cybersecurity is one of the most important issues of our time,” she said. “It’s a hot field. Cybersecurity jobs are growing by about 30% each year.” Accounting major Ally Steffen, ’21, took the course to round out her senior year. “This is one of my favorite classes I’ve taken,” Steffen said. “This class was so refreshing because there is no textbook. The curriculum is taught through student-made glossary presentations and real-life cases and articles. … Cybersecurity affects everyone. If a company that has your personal information gets hacked, then that can affect your life.”

Local leaders

Three of the five finalists for the 2021 Henrico County (Virginia) Public Schools Teacher of the Year award were students or graduates of the Educational Leadership and Policy Studies program in the School of Professional and Continuing Studies. They include the winner, Eric Byers, GC’21. Byers will earn a graduate certificate in educational leadership and policy studies in December. All in for the team ➤ SPIDER SPEED Smither and her teammates set a new record for the A-10 championships and for URI’s Mackal Fieldhouse on their way to the 4×800 conference crown in 2020. Smither gave the baton to Maria Acosta, ’20, who passed it to Brooke Fazio, ’21. Claire Brown, ’20, wrapped up the victory with the final leg.

A relay is a funny race. Each runner spends three of the four race legs as a spectator. If she runs the last leg, her time is spent anxiously awaiting the baton. At the A-10 championships in 2020, Kendra Smither, ’22, was on the front end. Running the lead leg, she put her team in first place at the handoff. Then, she watched like everyone else as the gold medal performance that she started played out (see sidebar). “The thing I remember most is cheering on my teammates for the rest of the race and seeing them destroy the field,” she said. “The best thing about winning a relay is knowing that you did it with all of your teammates.” Smither is applies her selfless outlook and considerable talents in her academic work, too. Over the summer, the anthropology and psy-

chology major led nearly three dozen 13- to 16-year-olds on a service trip across the mountains of Puerto Rico. Closer to campus, she has interned with Friends of East End, which is dedicated to restoring neglected African American burial grounds in the Richmond area. She participated in excavations and helped research genealogies of those interred to build biographies for their descendants. The work earned her the award for outstanding civic engagement during athletics’ annual SPIDY awards. Her goals for the upcoming season are, true to form, team-focused. “Whether that’s being a great leader as a captain, scoring points for each competition and event, and making this team championship-ready and beyond is what I’m all in for,” she said. “A successful team makes a successful individual.”

Academic champs

Men’s golf was crowned Academic National Champions by the Golf Coaches Association of America after posting the highest GPA among more than 1,000 men’s college golf teams across all NCAA divisions, the NAIA, and the NJCAA during the 2020–21 academic year. The team GPA was 3.85. Six members of the team were named All-America Scholars, a new program record.

One of the best

Catcher Drew Blakely was one of 17 semifinalists for the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year, which is presented annually to the best catcher in all of NCAA Division I baseball. Blakely said his love for the demanding position goes back to his younger days. “I first started playing catcher in Little League because nobody else wanted to do it,” he said. “Since then, I have learned to love the ability to see the whole field and take a leadership role.”

The A-10 nominated runner Brooke Fazio and lacrosse defender Brittney Wright for the NCAA’s 2021 Woman of the Year award, which will be announced in the fall. Fazio, a three-time All-American, finished eighth in the final of the 800-meter race at the outdoor NCAA Championships and owns the Spider program record in that event. Wright, a defensive star for the nationally ranked women’s lacrosse program, is the 2021 A-10 Defensive Player of the Year and a First-Team All-Atlantic 10 player. She has also been a four-year member of UR’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and will serve on SAAC’s executive board as the diversity and inclusion co-chair for the 2021-22 academic year.

F O O T B A L L This fall, a dozen Spiders are taking advantage of an extra year of eligibility. One of them is quarterback Joe Mancuso. Joe Mancuso, ’21, gets the quirkiness of starting his sixth season of college football at age 24. He points out that some of his teammates were in seventh grade when he was a high school senior. “That’s a little strange,” he said, “but it’s been a lot of fun.” It’s also another example of how the COVID-19 pandemic upended normal life, but the NCAA offered consolation for athletes whose seasons were disrupted. Players like Mancuso received an extra year of eligibility. After redshirting in 2016, he played fall seasons in 2017, 2018, and 2019, and then an abbreviated spring season in 2021, making him a sixth-year player this fall. “It’s funny — looking back, the fifth-years were always the old heads,” he said. “I’m at that point plus another year, so now I’m an extra-old head. It’s a funny dynamic, but I’m definitely appreciative they gave us another year and that we’re able to keep it rolling.” Rolling is a good description of what Mancuso has been doing under center since he began making starts at quarterback in 2018. Before the current season

started, he already ranked in the program’s top 10 in total offense and in three career passing categories (yards, completions, and touchdowns). The biggest jump he had to make from high school to college was learning the more sophisticated defenses, he said. He spent a lot of time with his coaches and at the side of Kyle Lauletta, ’18, who was

“ Looking back, the fifth-years were always the old heads.” drafted out of college in the fourth round by the New York Giants and is now with the Cleveland Browns. Opposing defenses also proved to be formidable teachers. “Getting on the field slowed everything down,” Mancuso said. “Once I figured out, ‘OK, this is cover two. This is cover three,’ it helped me know where to go with the ball. That’s also something I learned behind Kyle

and the other quarterbacks ahead of me: composure and accuracy.” His favorite moments from his career include ones you might not expect. Yes, he makes big throws for touchdowns, but ask him about his personal highlight reel, and he’ll tell you about times he ran the ball, got hit, and stayed on his feet. “Anything that’s a little bit of an unorthodox QB play” is memorable, he said. He hopes to continue making good memories this fall and then after, hopefully in professional football, a goal he’ll pursue “as long as I can,” he said, hopeful of following in Lauletta’s footsteps into the NFL. “It’s hard to get in there, and once you get in there, it’s even harder to stay. There’s a lot of work you have to put in.” But there’s no reason to get ahead of himself. He’s still got a graduate certificate in human resources to finish in December through the School of Professional and Continuing Studies and one more season with his team to savor. “I love playing football,” he said. “I love playing for the University of Richmond, and I love the guys that come here. I love being able to stay an extra year.”

A QB’S BEST FRIEND Over the summer, Mancuso whiled away his downtime with the help of a new dog, an Australian shepherd mixed with border collie named Breesy. The name is a nod to the quarterback Mancuso grew up idolizing, Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints.

The idea of being in the moment and enjoying that moment. Of simply having appreciation and gratitude for hearing good news from someone in our community and not thinking about what to do next or which next problem to solve. It’s admittedly very hard for me to stay in these moments because I am too busy thinking about what other work I have to do. But I am working on just being.

is next. They just are. And they are absolutely delighted to see anyone; they are definitely extroverts, and they definitely put a smile on people’s faces. WHICH WORDS OR PHRASES DO YOU MOST OVERUSE? Wicked awesome. I am from Massachusetts; I apologize in advance if I use this near you. WHAT TALENT WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO HAVE? I’d love to consistently hit singles and doubles in major league baseball in about 35% of my at-bats. And to play third base flawlessly. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOURSELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I’d like to be more extroverted. WHERE WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO LIVE? On the water. I love being near the ocean, lakes, rivers — any body of water.

WHAT LIVING PERSON DO YOU MOST ADMIRE? David Card. David is an economist at Berkeley now and was one of my Ph.D. advisers at Princeton. As an economist, he is a genius, and if you know him, he is a polymath; he knows tons about tons of things. But what I most admire about him is his generosity as a mentor. He has spent an extraordinary fraction of his time mentoring others. David’s commitment to helping others is something I try to emulate.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST TREASURED POSSESSION? My greatest treasures are people, experiences, and memories. Although I accumulate a lot of stuff, most of it I could honestly do without. But one of my most prized possessions is something that brings back some great memories. It is the Massachusetts state championship ring I earned with my baseball teammates in high school. I rarely wear it, but I love it. It reminds me that with amazing training and coaching and loyalty to each other, a group of underdogs can do something really special.

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST EXTRAVAGANCE? Gear. I buy too much stuff for activities that I don’t have time to do. I wish I could tell you that I use this stuff all the time, but I don’t. At least I can say that at a moment’s notice, I can be prepared to go on a long bike ride, go fishing, take photographs, or build a table.

WHAT DO YOU REGARD AS THE LOWEST DEPTH OF MISERY? Being in a place where someone you love is hurting and you cannot figure out how to help them. Not knowing how to help someone in need is extremely distressing.

WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT STATE OF MIND? I am excited. I am super excited to work for the students, staff, faculty, and alumni of the University of Richmond. My family celebrates Christmas, and right now I feel like I did as a child anticipating Christmas. This is not to suggest that we don’t have difficult and very serious work ahead of us, but our university is extraordinary and teeming with great people trying to improve the lives of young people and society. I am simply excited to do what I can to help support making this remarkable place even better. WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU MOST LIKE IN A PERSON? It’s hard to choose just one, so I’ll give you a few: integrity, generosity of time, humility, effort, and humor. WHAT DO YOU MOST DISLIKE ABOUT YOUR APPEARANCE? I used to have terrific hair; it was really thick and awesome. Oh, well. IF YOU WERE TO DIE AND COME BACK AS A PERSON OR A THING, WHAT WOULD IT BE? One of my dogs. My dogs have it made; I know they have zero responsibility, and I am quite sure they have almost no anxiety. They are not worried about what

WHAT OR WHO IS THE GREATEST LOVE OF YOUR LIFE? Tina. I met Tina when we were 4 years old. Our first date was in 1985 as sophomores in high school. We were married three weeks after we graduated from college, at age 22. We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary this year. She is wicked awesome. WHAT DO YOU MOST DISLIKE? Blue cheese. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE OCCUPATION? First responder. I am enormously proud of the fact that my son is a firefighter and my daughter is a nurse. They both are devoting their lives to serving others. WHAT IS YOUR MOTTO? I have two: Chip away, and work hard. Both are just two words, but each is powerful to me. Chipping away is as useful in training for a half-marathon as it is in writing a book or helping someone in need. Many tasks seem daunting, but just getting started — and regular effort — often works. As for working hard, I figure our contributions to society are the result of some combination of our ability and our effort. ANDREW WOOD, ’64 AND L’67, IS AN ATTORNEY WHO HAS BEEN IN PRIVATE PRACTICE IN RICHMOND SINCE 1968. Andrew Wood was “shaking like a leaf ” when he stepped into the Supreme Court in January 1980. He was there to argue on behalf of his client George “Junior” Lewis Jr., who had been convicted under the Federal Firearms Act for being in possession of a handgun after being convicted of a felony. The felony conviction occurred in the early 1960s in Florida — a detail that caught Wood’s eye. Around that same time, the Supreme Court had decided in the landmark case Gideon v. Wainwright that courts are required to provide an attorney to felony defendants who cannot afford one. “It occurred to me that Junior was convicted in the same state as Earl Gideon, and it seemed possible that Junior didn’t have a lawyer as well,” Wood says. “It turns out that he did not.” Wood argued in the district court and then on appeal that because Lewis didn’t have a lawyer, the prior conviction was void and could not be the basis for a conviction under the Federal Firearms Act. He lost at both levels, but similar cases were making their way through other courts, and the decisions were divided. It was a prime target for the Supreme Court to step in. Despite advice he got from colleagues ahead of time, Wood says oral arguments were still a frightening experience. He was shaking when the justices walked in until Chief Justice Warren Burger smiled and said, “Settle down, son.” “That’s all it took,” Wood says. “Thankfully, the nerves settled, and I felt a whole lot better and proceeded with my argument. The man didn’t have a lawyer — what’s the worth of a conviction like that? The law was pretty settled that you couldn’t use a void conviction. It was a pretty simple argument, I thought.” The Supreme Court justices disagreed with Wood’s position, although justices William Brennan Jr., Lewis Powell Jr., and Thurgood Marshall offered a dissent. “I lost all the way,” he says, “but as somebody said to me recently, even if you lose, you still went to the Super Bowl.”

make a Broadway debut CHAUNTEE' SCHULER IRVING, ’03, IS A PROFESSIONAL ACTOR, SINGER, AND DANCER. On the day Chauntee´ Schuler Irving auditioned for a role on Broadway, she thought about quitting acting for good. It had taken her years to get to that point. She had studied theater at Richmond and gone to graduate school in New York City. She had booked roles with Broadway national tours and worked in television. Then, in the middle of an audition that would put her in the Broadway production of The Lion King, she fumbled. “I went to hit a high note, and I didn’t reach it because I was so nervous,” she says. “I remember thinking, ‘Wow, I just messed up in front of [director] Julie Taymor, and now I’m not going to work again.’ “I went home and ate

this big bowl of ice cream and said, ‘Tomorrow, I’ll be done with acting.’” Irving had, in fact, landed the part of the musical’s most significant female character, Nala. Preparing for a Broadway performance is like training for the Olympics, Irving says. High-impact, intense rehearsals to get you ready to perform eight shows a week. Your body is put through the wringer, and you need physical therapy to stay in shape. You have to be mentally tough. And then one day, you step onto that stage for the first time. “It was exhilarating; it was terrifying,” she says. “It was everything you imagine.” The intense preparation helped when Irving had to go off script in her debut performance. The Lion King costumes are stunning but incredibly intricate. In the middle of Irving’s big number, “Shadowland,” her collar detached, and her beautiful neck band dangled from her costume — a major distraction. “I just ripped it off and threw it somewhere,” she says. “Afterward, they told me, ‘We love that you did that. It was so memorable and in character, and you know how to handle yourself on stage.’” After The Lion King, Irving had another Broadway role in the musical Murder Ballad before returning to gradu-

HERBERTH BALSELLS, ’06, IS A PHYSICIAN WHO SPECIALIZES IN EMERGENCY MEDICINE. On a Thursday night in July, Herberth Balsells arrived at Northern Westchester Hospital in New York for the start of his overnight shift. Two patients followed shortly behind him. Then, four ambulances raced in, and five more patients arrived. “In a matter of two hours, there were 15 patients, and I’m the only doctor,” he says. “It’s like working at the airport, and you have a lot of airplanes flying, and they’re running out of gas. You have to figure out which one you let land first.” Surprisingly, the trauma cases — like gunshot wounds, stabbings, car accidents, and even a bad fall — aren’t the most challenging. There’s a standard procedure to follow, and everyone knows their role. Someone watches, some-

one records, someone examines the patient. A nurse is in charge of medications, and the doctor is at the head of the bed holding the patient. They also follow a series of steps, like a recipe, that prioritize life-threatening injuries and leave the rest for later. If the patient can’t breathe, you don’t move on to the next step until they can or have been intubated. If there’s a puncture wound, you control the bleeding. A broken ankle can wait. “And you do the same thing every time,” he says, “so that nobody misses anything.” The tough patients are the ones that break the algorithm. Maybe they can’t speak or won’t tell him what happened. Bit by bit, Balsells has to piece together what’s

She is particularly focused on encouraging actors of color to find their worth and continue pushing boundaries in the business and in academia. “That was very much a part of the journey, the struggle, and a lot of the success of The Lion King,” she says. “It was the first show on Broadway that Julie Taymor said, ‘This percentage of the cast needs to be a cast of color, and that cannot be changed.’ “Being a part of that show was vital to me really, truly understanding and discovering how important it is [to show] culture, heritage, and ethnicity. It’s impossible to talk about The Lion King without talking about the impact on the industry, for the actors, and for people to see that representation onstage.”

wrong and how to proceed with treatment. It requires knowing a little bit about every field of medicine, training for procedures he’ll never perform, and being comfortable with the unknown. “If you haven’t seen it before, you haven’t read about it, you’re not going to think about that diagnosis,” he says. “But once you see a few cases that are very shocking, they stay in your mind, and then you may someday see something like it.”

I’m a political officer with the foreign service, and it’s our job to help the policymakers at the Department of State and in the White House understand the political situation and the dynamics here in Israel. The quality of life here is really nice. We live right on the beach. But, obviously, Tel Aviv and Israel came under a rocket fire [in May] from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, which is a Hamas-aligned terrorist organization. I was in our nursery, rocking our 6-week-old when I could hear some loud explosions outside. I didn’t think much of it because we had white noise playing for my kid to sleep, and it drowned it out. I had just put him down in his bassinet when my wife, Tiffany, came in and said she could hear the sirens going off outside. We went out on our balcony and could see Israel’s Iron Dome intercepting the rockets from Gaza. It got to the point where the rockets were literally being intercepted right above our apartment complex. That’s when we woke the kids up and ran. There is a bomb shelter within our building — it’s Israeli code that all buildings have bomb shelters for this exact scenario — but from the time that you receive an alert on your phone or you hear the sirens, you only have 60 seconds to get to a place of cover. For us, the bomb shelter is about 13 floors down, and we’d have to run carrying a 6-week-old and a 2-year-old. The rockets were coming from the south, so we hunkered in the north-facing stairwell and rode out the barrage of rockets that was almost unprecedented in Israeli history. In previous assignments, I’ve been in situations that were a little bit dangerous. But it’s a completely different and unique experience to be clutching a 6-week-old. All our 2-year-old understood was that he was being woken up in the middle of the night and very quickly shuffled to a stairwell. He could hear the explosions. There were shaking windows, and it’s an intense experience. My wife, being the wonderful mother that she is, tried to make it into the least traumatizing experience as possible by asking him to pack his backpack and pick the toys that he wanted to bring into the stairwell. And then she tried to help him cope with it the next day. The morning after the first night, he was very withdrawn, but my wife helped him come to terms with what was going on. This went on for about a week or so. You’ve got to live with this very intense level of anxiety for the duration. Even now, my wife will hear some noise outside, and it’ll sound similar to one of the sirens going off. It immediately elevates your blood pressure, and your anxiety goes up.

CARLISLE GREAVES, ’05, IS A LICENSED CLINICAL SOCIAL WORKER. Carlisle Greaves has seen difficult cases, from patients dealing with anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and pica to schizophrenia, narcissism, and antisocial personality disorder. “I had one case where a guy was a psychopath,” Greaves says. “He was 21, 22 years old. He could be violent. He was in the drug game pretty big. He had no hygiene. He was extremely intelligent and highly manipulative. He was living with his grandmother, and he had completely manipulated her to the point where he refused to work.” But the patient was also a talented rapper, which gave Greaves an inroad. Greaves is a musician — he was a member of the Octaves and even landed a record deal a year after graduation — so he often uses music therapy to connect with patients. In this case, a producer sent hip-hop beats for Greaves to take to his patient’s house. In the basement, the two wrote and recorded tracks. His patient was eventually offered a record deal from a well-known rap label for some of the work they produced. Greaves says his job isn’t to fix people. He’s a partner

to patients who need to learn to assert their own power in a situation. “I always tell people I’m here to work together to come to a solution,” he says. “I’m here to help you think differently about what you’re dealing with and see it from a different perspective, that you’re going to fix yourself once you understand.” Many of Greaves’ patients are from lower-income communities in the Maryland and Washington, D.C., areas, and patients’ needs can be wide and varied. He often finds that family members need support as well. If he goes to a household to see one child, he might end up also working with a sibling. Or he might begin working with a man who struggles with anger only to find his wife wants to sit in, so he’s soon doing couples counseling. “If you’re good at this job, people get better — and that’s a process,” Greaves says. “Most of the time I’m working with a client, I’m hearing about how they’re improving, how they’re overcoming challenges. I see them gain insight, have an ‘aha!’ moment, and then see how they applied it. … Even if there are horror stories, you see people turn those into triumph.”

BOB: We reconnected through LinkedIn, but we had a lot of connections. Sallie had my aunt for math [at Richmond]. Her late husband and I were RAs together. And we actually double-dated. SALLIE: Bob was dating my suitemate — her name was Lucy — and they dated for quite a while. So I knew Bob just because he was dating my good friend. He contacted me about three and a half years ago. I had no idea that Bob had spent 34 years at Villanova, and I don’t think he knew exactly what I was doing. But he knew about my late husband Marshall’s passing because people were expressing condolences to me on Facebook and LinkedIn. He sent me a message expressing his condolences, and

from there, we just continued communicating. BOB: This was around Christmas, and I thought, the first Christmas after a spouse passed away, I’m sure it was difficult. So, I sent her a note that I had known Marshall, that I knew how fine of a person he was. Then, in 2018, I came down [to Richmond] to visit my aunt because she was going into assisted living, and we reconnected. SALLIE: We went out to dinner. We ended up going to one of my grandchildren’s basketball games. We watched a football game on campus. It was the beginning of a very nice relationship. BOB: I proposed to Sally in September of last year on the campus. We weren’t right in front of Cannon Chapel,

but in the sitting area below. I asked her, and luckily she said yes. I think we both felt like Richmond was the connecting point between us, and it was the perfect place to make that commitment. SALLIE: Falling in love, there’s been an element of surprise. When my husband passed away, I really never imagined that I would be in this situation again. And when Bob reached out to me, I didn’t have any idea that we would have this kind of a connection. But it has been just wonderful. You realize that there are so many good things that can happen to you, no matter what the circumstances are — BOB: — or what stage of life.

You’re so locked in during a World Series. Your brain goes almost into a hypnotic state. That’s what I felt. I was in it before I homered and when I homered. You get in that zone. I remember when it left my bat and I was running to first, I was like, “That’s gone.” I can see the center fielder and the right fielder converging into the gap, and I’m like, “Oh, my god — I hit it well enough.” Fifteen years later, it’s still a surreal moment. When I was rounding the bases, I remember thinking I felt like a 12-year-old kid in my backyard. How many times are you in your backyard playing whiffle ball and it’s, “Oh, Sean Casey homers in the World Series!” I used to say that out loud. I was thinking that while rounding the bases, that this is my 12-year-old dream. It was almost like a dream within a dream, like I can’t believe this is happening. It was my ninth year in the big leagues, so to have that moment at that point was really cool. Imagination is a wonderful thing. A lot of things have happened in my life that I’ve imagined, which is crazy. What I didn’t imagine is that it almost felt like time stood still for a second. There were 55,000 fans at the game, millions of people watching around the world, but I felt like the only person in the arena when I was rounding the bases. It’s tough to explain. When the ball went out, it felt like I was just floating around the bases. I don’t know if in my imagination I’d ever thought of that. Now when I go to games with my kids, I’m like, “Man, it looks hard to hit a baseball.” I’m looking at these guys thinking, “I don’t even know if I can hit in the gap right now.” I mean, how did I do that? Rats have lived alongside us in cities for centuries. We don’t like them, and they’re not good for us — but we don’t know what to do about them. UR’s urban ecologist and his students are on the case.

n Sunday May 11, 1940, months after Nazi Germany defeated Poland and the day after its armies invaded France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, Richmond’s newly elected mayor Gordon Ambler mobilized citizens for a local attack he called “a blitzkrieg.” “An army of … fighters will set forth to tackle the enemies in their stronghold,” the Richmond Times-Dispatch wrote, previewing the mayor’s battle plans. “This is the last day the [enemy in Richmond] can frolic around and have a good time without a care in the world.” The mayor’s enemy: Rats. They were everywhere. They scavenged in dumps, vacant lots, and alleys, feasting on untidy scraps left behind by markets, restaurants, and homes. Health officials estimated that there were at least 400,000 of them, more than twice the human population of the city recorded by the federal census that year. When Ambler declared a “war on rats,” he pledged that their days in Richmond were numbered. Only they weren’t. Like every other urban rat eradication effort ever launched in the history of cities anywhere, the rats held on to their turf. Descendants of the ones on whom Mayor Ambler declared war are almost certainly among the ones that frolic in Richmond today. One of the biggest issues at the root of the rat problem is that we don’t really understand them. We don’t have a good grasp of how they respond to our efforts to get rid them or fully understand the scope of their threat to us as disease carriers. Our ignorance keeps sending us back to the same frustrated lamentation: Can we please just go our separate ways? Urban ecologist and biology professor Jonathan Richardson has been trying to tease out this knowledge from the dark corners of downtown Richmond. Alongside him, he often has one or more of his undergraduate research students — Nick Gonzales, ’23, Katelyn Wing, ’22, and Ryan Szykowny, ’22. On a typical night, they converge near an unkempt alley around sunset, put on reflective safety vests and camp headlamps, and begin what Richardson calls his “rat safaris.” They go in search of rat habitats in the middle of the city, places where they lurk near food sources but can quickly hide at the first sign of trouble. This often means poorly lit alleys with uneven pavement framed by

half-used garages, basements, and back entrances — and garbage, the more the better. They place live-capture traps baited with bacon grease, peanut butter, and oats, then retrieve them in the morning. What first stands out on a rat safari is visual: the graffiti on dirty walls and the trash on the ground. With a little time, cracks in the concrete and spaces under doorways start to morph into portals for the darting rats that catch an attentive eye. The next thing that hits is the smell, particularly after standing in one spot for more than a few seconds. The summer heat radiating from the pavement amplifies the intense odors of a grease trap or half-eaten meals bused from tables and dropped in the dumpsters hours earlier. Then come the sounds. Rats vocalize with something between a screech and a chirp, and once the ears start to pick it up, it is a chorus of call and response. Just as the senses slowly adjust under a night sky in a meadow, they sharpen here. Motion becomes more and more apparent in dark corners. A hole at the base of a trash bin might reveal a nose or a bit of tail. A rat might scurry halfway down the alley and duck down a stairwell within inches of someone’s foot. Another might run along the edge of a wall, dash under a dumpster, and disappear up through an opening they’ve chewed in the middle of the metal bottom. Often, a rat safari plays out right behind the kind of restaurant that sells $13 burgers with a $2 up charge for a side of sweet potato fries. The research team regularly encounters couples out for the night as they head to their nearby parked cars in shimmering skirts and nice slacks, oblivious to almost everything in the ecosystem around them until Richardson inevitably chats them up. Police officers sometimes drop by to ask why they’re there. Students sometimes ask themselves the same question. “We talk about it with each other,” Wing, one of the student researchers, says. “We’re frequently like, ‘How did we end up here?’ I realize that not a lot of people like talking about rats, but once they’re impacted by rats, they’re super-passionate about getting rid of them. I’m living off campus this summer, and there was a rat that came out of our trash at the back of our apartment. My friends I’m living with were like, ‘No one else is taking out trash except you. You know the rats.’” Richardson and his students go on these safaris to answer some basic ecological questions: What are the rats doing? How are they interacting with their environment? How closely are they related to nearby populations, and what diseases do they carry? “You could ask the same questions for any organism, like a grizzly bear in the pristine areas of Montana,” Richardson says. Ecologists and other biologists have long trained their eyes on just this type of majestic subject. Central American butterflies, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, big mammals roaming the savannas of East Africa or the plains of western North America — these were the places scientists went to understand the natural world. The study of flora and

fauna in the middle of dense human settlements — called urban ecology — didn’t begin to take serious root until the 1970s. As a result, scientists often know comparatively less about the ecology of the environments in which most of us sleep, work, and play. “Somewhere between 50 and 55% of humanity lives in cities at this point,” Richardson says. “Our cities are setting up natural selection in a way that we just don’t understand because it’s all new and hasn’t been the focus of research.” Rats have been living alongside humans for centuries. Ecologists use the term “commensality” to describe the relationship. Its Latin roots — com (with) and mensa (table) — translate to something like “eating together.” However, to be commensal is not necessarily to be convivial, as many a tense Thanksgiving dinner proves. We do not have to like each other to find ourselves sharing the same table. Still, the contours of our relationship with rats are largely a mystery. Rats have long proven significant and fascinating to us, both environmentally and culturally, for reasons good and bad. They are widely blamed for transporting the fleas that brought the bubonic plague into the ports of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East during the 14th cen-

tury. Rats are the first sign of trouble in Albert Camus’s The Plague and a tool of torture in George Orwell’s 1984. Fascist regimes of the mid-20th century slurred their foes by calling them rats, and a mob informer is a worthless traitor who rats out his friends. We respond to bad news by evoking them as an epithet — “Rats!” — and we hate, hate, hate the rat race. But there’s also a flip side to our relationship. A Belgian nongovernmental organization has trained rats to sniff for land mines, and rats beat humans into space (admittedly, with human help). The Russians launched two of them into low orbit in 1960, and a French one named Hector launched on a rocket in 1961, two months before Yuri Gagarin’s historic flight. They can be vehicles for narrative empathy — take Templeton of Charlotte’s Web and the frustrated would-be chef Remy of Ratatouille. Rizzo the Rat is Gonzo’s voice of reason on The Muppet Show, and pop culture has given us both pizza rat and Chuck E. Cheese. Bob Geldof, who organized the charity concert Live Aid in

1985, gained fame as the frontman for the Boomtown Rats. For a time, some of America’s smoothest crooners called themselves the Rat Pack. When we think of a literal rat, we tend to think of Rattus norvegicus, often called the Norway rat or brown rat. Thought to have originated in China or Mongolia, the species has now spread to every continent except Antarctica. About 100 years ago, scientists began breeding R. norvegicus. That albino strain of the species is the lineage used in labs across the world today, including at Richmond, where behavioral neuroscientist Kelly Lambert has made headlines worldwide by teaching rats with names like Sophia and Aletheia to drive little cars, part of a study designed to shed light on issues such as emotional resilience. The rats that Richardson and his students are trapping in Richmond’s urban alleys are nothing like Sophia and Aletheia. “These rats will bite your face off,” he says. One of the things that trapping allows Richardson to do is study the rats’ DNA to better understand population dis-

In a study in Salvador, Brazil, he worked with local authorities to study the effects of a city eradication program designed to drive rats out of slum areas, where they pose health risks to residents. “We know we get short-term benefits from lethally removing these guys,” Richardson says. “But ecologically, we know we’re removing a lot of the competition for all the individuals that we don’t pull out of that population.” That’s what happened in Salvador and likely in Richmond in the 1940s and is the all-too-predictable result wherever eradication is attempted — the rat population falls but then rises again. Richardson studied the DNA of the Salvador rats before and after the campaign to better understand why the bounce-back happens. He determined that Salvador’s population rebound was driven primarily by the descendants of the survivors rather than rats moving in from nearby neighborhoods. “Almost never have there been systematic efforts to understand what is the best long-term solution to bring these populations down,” he says. “We show no indication that efforts are succeeding for any more than a few months. Coming up with long-term solutions is the only way we’re going to figure this out. Understanding the ecological part of this as it relates to public health — for me, that’s where I want to be.” The public health implications are significant. Rats carry zoonotic diseases, the kind that jump from animals to humans. Some of the most common concerns related to rats include bacteria that cause leptospirosis and cat scratch fever and the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, the worry of cat owners when they empty their litter boxes. Zoonotic disease risk from rats appears to be more pervasive in disadvantaged areas, though Richardson and other researchers are still documenting this. “Where you have more rats, you also tend to get more clinical infections that rise to the status of being reported by medical authority groups, which usually means you go to the hospital or some medical clinic,” Richardson says. “There’s also a psychological aspect of this. If you’re surrounded by rats, you don’t feel comfortable. You may always wince when you open the cabinets.” Richardson’s collaborators in Vancouver, British Columbia, captured the unease in the title of a 2019 study: “‘They’re Always There’: Resident Experiences of Living with Rats in a Disadvantaged Neighborhood.” Additional risks abound. In rural areas, rats can decimate crop fields. In the tightly packed favelas of Salvador, people might not have the ability to store food in ways

that prevent rats from contaminating it. Rats can destroy infrastructure as they chew through wires and asphalt. In a New York City park that Richardson was tracking, rats burrowed so extensively under the bricks and concrete that they caused a playground to collapse, falling 2 to 3 feet below the surface level around it. That intersection where ecology, public health, and social equity meet is at the heart of Richardson’s current research project in Richmond. The goal of his study in alleys on dark nights is to learn the environmental and social factors that influence rat populations and the health risks they pose. The research, supported by a grant from the Jeffress Memorial Trust, is the first to look at Richmond’s rats since the days of Mayor Ambler’s blitzkrieg. It’s a graduate-level project for his undergraduate students, all of whom are working on related projects and often helping each other. Richardson keeps the mood light in the streets and back in the lab at UR’s Gottwald Center. This summer, near the fridge where he stores DNA vials and other sundries, including a frozen beaver tail, he put up a magnetic dart board. “I feel super lucky to be in this lab,” Wing said. “Something I’ve really appreciated about doing research here is that you’re working directly with your professor as your mentor. We’re working on our own independent projects. Hopefully we’ll be able to come out with a paper before we graduate and be the first author on these papers, which is a huge accomplishment. Dr. Richardson has been guiding us directly. I honestly think that he focuses more on our projects than he does his own.” Wing has been engaged in a yearlong meta-analysis, combining data from more than 230 research papers into one gigantic database to reveal socioeconomic and environmental factors that correlate with the prevalence of rat-related zoonotic diseases in locations across the world. Szykowny, who is from Connecticut, spent part of his time in the lab this summer examining 60,000 photos from motion-activated trail cameras set up near a construction site in Somerville, Massachusetts, as part of an effort to understand the effects of demolition on wild rat activity. (One of his terms of art is “rats per unit of time.”) Gonzales, a Virginian, does double duty in Lambert’s lab, teaching rats to drive. Szykowny says the research is a welcome change from classroom labs. “I felt a lot of times like a chef following a recipe,” he says. “At the end of the day, if I succeeded it was because I could follow instructions that were given to us. I wanted to do research because I knew there’d be opportunities for long-term projects. It’s a space to fail and learn, and you actually have the chance to fix your mistake and find a solution.” Richardson’s wild rats also provide useful data for his faculty colleague Lambert, of rat-driving fame. Her research already compares the stress levels of rats living in different types of laboratory environments. Data from the wild rats lets her and collaborator Krista Stenger, associate professor of biology, directly compare the neuroanatomy and physiological status of wild rats with the rats who live in the comparatively low-stress lab environments. The team can also evaluate just how far these lab strains have diverged from their wild ancestors.

Through systematic trapping, data gathering, and analysis over the next year, Richardson will provide the first characterization of Richmond’s rat population and the pathogens and parasites it carries. Back in the lab, his team uses tails, feces, spleens, and other biomaterial to develop a host of data about each trapped rat. They run it through various pieces of lab equipment to extract and analyze DNA — useful lab skills for the students to develop. Because they know exactly where they trapped each one, they are also using sophisticated mapping software to correlate the biological data with multiple types of GIS data, looking systematically for patterns. The data might show, for example, that environmental features such as temperature, topography, or distance to water affect rat population. Richardson is also working with UR’s Digital Scholarship Lab to investigate possible socioeconomic connections such as whether the rat population, or parasite and pathogen prevalence related to them, correlate with data such as median household income and other social equity measures. Data such as this is important for constructing habitat suitability models — statistical models that tell us where in the city the rats like to live and where they are most likely to carry which pathogens and parasites. This data will help the researchers develop models to predict the likelihood of rats occurring in areas they do not sample. From all of that should emerge the first picture of the social variables that explain inequities in vulnerability to rat-borne diseases. “It wasn’t until recently that we started incorporating socioeconomic variables into urban ecological data,” Richardson said. “I would say that in the last year or two, it’s been a much bigger part of the conversation in urban ecology.” The overarching goal, from a scientific perspective, is replicability, which has often been a challenge for ecologists. If scientists see something interesting in one petri dish, that’s great, but it doesn’t start to become noteworthy until they see it in 20. The variables of the natural world are harder to control for. That’s one reason Richardson has led research in multiple cities and why he has collaborators around the world. Cities are replicable units, he says. No two are identical, but they share enough commonalities that replication can draw out general principles. “It’s great that we have biologists out there trying to track down answers in Richmond, New York, Salvador, and New Orleans, but most of the cities don’t have anybody tracking this stuff,” he says. “We need some general insights that are useful for the cities that don’t have the resources or expertise to do these studies. The replication part of this is what’s going to solve the problem globally.”

Penny Hu, ’23, knew what she wanted when she was thinking about where to go to college. Something big enough, but not too big. Near a city, but not in it. Definitely liberal arts. Richmond had flashed across her radar but not jumped out. That changed on the Saturday of her SAT exam at her school, Linden Hall in Lititz, Pennsylvania. In the classroom where she took it, she saw a gigantic Spider flag on the wall and UR paraphernalia all around her. The room’s teacher, Damien Hondares, ’17, became her mentor soon after and helped guide her decision to become a Spider. It was all part of his master plan when he started teaching shortly after graduation — “I’m going to be a walking, talking advertisement for Richmond,” he thought to himself. With experience, he’s learned that the best way to help prospective students like Hu is to do what he did with her: Listen to what they want and give advice accordingly. “Let’s not put unhealthy pressure on students so you’re not adding stress to their plate but are there as a caring figure they can trust,” he said.

Listening is key, agrees Laura Venos, ’04, a college and career specialist at McLean High School in northern Virginia. “When I’m helping students, I try to get them to think about criteria that’s important to them. Certainly if I start sensing some Richmond-like criteria, I’ll definitely recommend it.” Her advice for alumni talking to young people about college focuses on being supportive. “You always want to honor the student’s stress and the pressure they have — just offer, ‘How can I be helpful?’” She finds that the answer is often just by talking about her own experience. When Richmond is the right answer, alumni can offer encouragement with a new, tangible incentive: an application fee waiver. For the first time this fall, applicants can have their $50 application fee waived with the recommendation of an alumnus. Tell the student to select “Alumni waiver” during the application process. Fifty bucks might not sound like much, but every little bit helps students applying to multiple schools. It may be the nudge that a promising prospective Spider needs.

Class of 2020 celebration

Members of the Class of 2020 reassembled on campus Sept. 18–19 for an in-person celebration of commencement that the coronavirus pandemic denied them in May 2020. The Saturday schedule featured a reception by each school, followed by an all-class celebration on Stern Plaza outside of Jepson Hall. On Sunday, graduates gathered for a Class of 2020 Commemoration Ceremony, where they finally processed in person in caps and gowns as their names were read. Tim Hightower, ’08, a 10-year NFL veteran and current director of alumni relations for the Washington Football Team, served as keynote speaker.

A dear dad

Kimberly Bowers Rollins, ’05, adjusted quickly so Goodwill of Greater Washington could serve new needs.

Stronger together At its pre-pandemic peak, Goodwill of Greater Washington employed more than 1,000 team members. When it was forced to temporarily shut retail operations, the nonprofit had to furlough the majority of its staff, many of whom were also its clients, for three months. “My job immediately shifted from traditional fundraising to securing emergency funds to keep our doors open,” said Kimberly Bowers Rollins, ’05, vice president of development for Goodwill of Greater Washington. “Our fundraising centered on everything COVID exacerbated.” Her efforts as the organization’s fundraiser-in-chief allowed the organization to ramp up its client outreach at a time it was desperately needed. The nonprofit opened a virtual career center, loaned out laptops, partnered with Comcast to pro-

vide internet access, and launched an emergency assistance fund. It also raised money to cover furloughed employees’ health insurance. “I take seriously my role as a connector of people, causes, passions, and resources,” she said. She continues doing this today. A favorite moment is the graduations that follow Goodwill’s employment training programs. “Dressed in their caps and gowns, our graduates smile and cry with their family members,” she said. “Graduation is never the end — it’s the beginning that sets our participants on the path to securing and retaining employment. It’s exciting to know that the fundraising I do supports not only individual participants, but the trajectories of entire families.”

SPIDER PRIDE Rollins’ career in development includes a stop at UR, where she raised funds for Richmond Law. She continues to support UR as part of the leadership team of the University of Richmond Alumni Association. She is URAA’s VP for membership.

Bobbie Heilman Murphy, W’75, had an especially memorable Memorial Day weekend with friends and family this year. She spent it in LaGrange, Kentucky, for the dedication of a statue of her father, former Chancellor and President E. Bruce Heilman, who died in 2019. The statue, which sits on the campus of the Oldham County History Center northeast of Louisville, is called “The Road Warrior.” It depicts Heilman on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle as a tribute to him and all veterans. For years, he traveled on his Harley as a spokesperson for the Greatest Generation Foundation and the Spirit of ’45. American Legion riders rode from Virginia to LaGrange to honor him as part of the dedication. “I think he would have been tickled pink,” Murphy told the Richmond Times-Dispatch. “I think he and Mom were up there smiling down on us. And I think he was chuckling a little bit, to think a farm boy from Kentucky would have a statue erected for him.”

Update Mark Simerly, R’84 — whom we profiled in the Winter 2020 issue when he was a brigadier general commanding U.S. Army forces in South Korea — has a new rank and a new appointment. In July, the now Maj. Gen. Simerly became commanding general at Fort Lee in Virginia. Major general is the army’s highest permanent peacetime rank.

What made you interested in serving as URAA’s president? I love the university. I’m lucky that I've been able to be engaged in a number of ways since I graduated. My husband is an alum, and we have three daughters. One graduated in May 2020, one is a rising senior, and our youngest is starting in the fall. My love affair with the university has continued because, as a parent, I’ve seen the university through their eyes. I think that the university’s direction is terrific, and I’m proud to be an ambassador.

What do you want alumni to know about the URAA? That it exists for everyone. Once you graduate from the university — whether you graduated in 1960 or in May 2021 — you are part of our alumni association, and we serve you. What does the URAA do? We work with alumni relations and career services to encourage alumni to engage with the university. That can happen in a lot of ways, regardless of where an alum lives. Spiders can help current students through a mentorship role. They can hire another Spider or offer an internship or networking opportunities. They can also volunteer with their class when it’s their reunion year. We are thrilled when enthusiastic Spiders speak with prospective students and encourage them to visit the university. We also encourage alumni to give back to the university financially. You also have a role as the voice of alumni at the university. We want alumni to know that we are thoughtful, we’re listening, we care, and we want to hear what they have to say. Did the pandemic teach you new things about alumni programming? We saw that people who hadn’t been able to engage with the university —

maybe they live in Kansas or Minnesota — were signing up for the virtual programming. There was some event that was of interest to them, they signed up, and they were part of the virtual community, so we are excited about that. I think the virtual programming will continue and alumni across the globe will continue to participate. Tell me about the URAA leadership. One of the things I love about our board is that we have a real diversity of voices among the 28 of us. Our board members span class years from 1959 to 2020, and people’s lived experiences are very different. It remains a very strong objective to make sure that our board diversity continues. It's important to be able to evolve in your thinking. You might express an opinion but then start to think a little bit differently because you’re hearing from other board members with alternate perspectives. What do you have planned for the upcoming year? Obviously welcoming Dr. Kevin Hallock and doing what we can to help him

with his priorities. He will have receptions throughout the country, and we really want alumni to come out and meet him. We will continue helping with career support to enhance the Spider network. We’re also looking forward to hopefully getting people back to campus. People are motivated to connect in person.

We also plan to continue having conversations and training on diversity, equity, inclusion,

and belonging to further our ability to engage alumni in meaningful conversations.

Shoutout to UR Today’s best-known Spider in pop culture gave UR’s academic excellence some serious exposure on his TV show and social media channels, whose viewers and followers combine to number in the millions. Dave Burd, ’10, who broke out as a rapper via viral videos, has given that early success durability with hit singles and a TV series, Dave, which is the FX networks’ highest-rated comedy ever. In the episode “Ad Man,” which aired July 21, Burd’s semifictional alter ego, Dave, participates in a media event alongside rappers Lil Yachty and Desiigner. After the first two detail hardscrabble backgrounds, the camera cuts to Dave, who makes a rule-of-threes comedy turn. He skewers his comparative privilege by

detailing a comfortable upbringing in the Philadelphia suburbs. Then he turns to his college years. “I went to college at the University of Richmond, and I graduated as the marketing student of the year,” he says. “And actually, Businessweek ranked my undergraduate program as the No. 1 undergraduate marketing program in America. So by the transitive property, I was incredibly well-positioned.” Burd was indeed a business major and graduated summa cum laude, although the 2010 commencement program makes no mention of an award. The ranking stat is embellished but not far off. Businessweek ranked the Robins School of Business No. 15 on its 2010 list of best undergraduate business programs.

ON AIR Burd’s move to TV put him in the company of other Spiders on the small screen. Jamie McShane, R’88, has had a number of TV roles, most recently on CBS’s SEAL Team. 79 and still persuading When then-cadet Barry Steinberg, R’63 and L’66, informed his ROTC commanding officer of his post-graduation plan to go on active duty, the answer he got was what he expected. “He told me, ‘That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard you say.’ Then he asked me if I had ever thought about going to law school.” Steinberg had not. “You argue about everything,” his commanding officer explained. “And even when you’re wrong, you’re very persuasive.” That January day at UR proved to be life-changing. His next appointment, at the insistence of the commander, was with the dean of Richmond Law, who conditionally admitted him. His mom was delighted that he chose law school over his early 1960s, pre-ROTC career of choice. “I wanted to be a professional folk singer,” Steinberg said, smiling. Steinberg’s penchant for persuasion served him in his role creating the Army’s Environmental Law Division in the mid-1980s. Standing up a new division meant convincing the Secretary of the Army of the need for environmental legal expertise. “I had a 45-minute briefing ready, and 15 or 20 minutes in, the secretary stopped me,” Steinberg said. “He said, ‘Colonel, how many people do you need?’ I told him 17. He said, ‘Approved.’” While Steinberg retired from the Army in 1989 as a full colonel, he continues his work in environmental law as a partner at Kutak Rock in Washington, D.C. Now 79 years old, the father of four and grandfather of nine still regularly deals with issues ranging from water contamination and unexploded ordnance to the impact of global warming. His children regularly question him about outright retirement. “I tell them if I found something I’d rather do, I’d go do it,” he said. “But I like what I do, so why stop?” —Debbie Juniewicz

ESTHER JANE HARDENBERGH, W’82

Pitch perfect Music has always been a big part of Esther Jane Hardenbergh’s life. Hardenbergh, W’82, began playing the piano at 4; she also played violin, organ, and guitar at an early age. “I was very musical,” she said, “but I intended to be a doctor.” That changed for the third-generation Spider while at UR. Disenchanted with the sciences, Hardenbergh pursued a degree in music and followed it with a master’s degree in music performance at Boston University. That led to years singing professionally in New York and Europe. “I was one of not a lot of sopranos getting called to sing background,” she said. “Although it wasn’t always solo work, I loved every second of it.” Although Hardenbergh enjoyed success as a working musician, a desire for financial stability pulled her in another direction. She got a doctorate at Columbia University and took a faculty position in music at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music. There, she enjoyed both the singing she loved and the security she needed. “I sang more than I ever had,” she said. “I became a real soloist at that point, running all over the country, singing with orchestras.” She became chair of the department of vocal performance and director of the Patti and Allan Herbert Frost School of Music Program at Salzburg, which provides young artists an academic and musical experience in Austria. Hardenbergh retired in 2017 and now spends her time traveling with her husband, Whit, and their Cavalier King Charles spaniel, Ringo. “I had amazing teachers, both in and out of school, who really affected the path my life was going to take in ways that I couldn’t have planned,” Hardenbergh said. “I really enjoy being that kind of person in a young person’s life. BACK THEN POSTWAR BOOM By Matthew Dewald

All those boys Campus is exuding renewed energy as we inch closer to more normal routines following last year’s significant but necessary precautions. An earlier generation of Spiders would recognize the buzz. Seventy-five years ago, UR roared back to life after a worldwide crisis. The odds were not in their favor. In the fall of 1946, a student’s chance of getting a seat to eat in the dining spot that everyone called “the slop shop” was 0.06666 — “in round figures,” added Bob Mundy, R’47, the student who calculated it. The problem was too many students. Seventy-five years ago, UR enrolled a then-record 3,330 students, blowing past the previous high-water mark of 2,174, according to The Collegian. They crowded classrooms and registration windows in Millhiser gymnasium, caused long lines for textbooks and coffee, and prompted the university to hire 21 additional faculty. UR’s sharp enrollment increase was part of a tidal wave of higher education matriculation across the country as college-age men returned from Europe and the Pacific after World War II. With GI Bill benefits in hand — the legislation had passed quietly in June 1944, as D-Day dominated the news — veterans went to college in unprecedented numbers. (America’s young adults were also getting busy in other ways. Census figures show that about 600,000

more babies were born in the U.S. in 1946 than in 1945, marking the beginning of the baby boom generation.) At Richmond, the impacts of the enrollment surge were evident across campus, if contemporary coverage in The Collegian is any guide. Football coaches welcomed back bigger, stronger players “after three years with Uncle Sam,” as one reporter put it. Another reporter wrote that a theater professor “saw the light” when he discovered that “the old playhouse, veteran of two world wars and still standing, will never be the same again. ... The windows have been washed” to spruce up the place for additional faculty office space. In the Sept. 20, 1946, issue, the editorial board could not contain its glee for “a movement that is definitely under way to meet one of the greatest needs of the university ... : the organization of a 60-piece marching band.” Not everything was quite so light-hearted. Serious traffic issues emerged, including a dangerous near-miss involving a student driver and a child at a local school. There was also a temporary textbook

shortage, soon sorted out by the campus bookstore through urgent telephone calls and telegrams to weary publishers trying to meet the increased demand. The returning men also caused a severe gender imbalance, as Richmond College’s enrollment surged to nearly three times Westhampton’s enrollment. Student perspectives varied on this aspect of campus life. The male students generally complained, but from a Westhampton columnist came this refrain: “Men, men, men around campus.” She then quoted a classmate: “You should have seen all the boys who danced with me.” One of the most significant challenges was housing, and gender again played a role. For the men, the university repurposed some surplus army barracks from a nearby base. A faculty member greeted this solution with the suggestion that the university also make use of surplus camouflage paint to obscure the “monstrosity.” The women, meanwhile, scored construction of a new brick dormitory — today’s South Court. One or more pranksters submitted anonymous name suggestions for the new residences. For Richmond College’s secondhand barracks: Paradise Lost. For Westhampton’s sparkling new dorm: Paradise Regained.

ERIKA “EJ” OLSON CAMP OS, ’94

Bring out the best For most of her career, Erika Olson Campos, ’94, has been helping hospitals meet patient needs, provide quality care, and solve long-term issues through strategic planning. With the arrival of COVID-19, everything changed. Suddenly, Campos went from preparing for the next three years to looking at the next few days or hours. She worked in the emergency operations center of Christus Health in New Mexico, leading a team that converted one wing to a closed COVID unit. She also launched a pop-up testing center in a school parking lot that later moved to a drive-through oil change center. “While it was terrifying at times and a lot of hard work, it was good to have a purpose in a time when we all felt somewhat helpless,” she says. “It was overwhelming and heart-wrenching, but at the same time, I’ve never been prouder to be in healthcare.” Now, Campos is back to what she does best. In March, she became president of Hospital Services Corp., which helps hospitals run more efficiently by taking on services outside of direct patient care. For instance, they help with background and credential checks for new hires and offer a portal for reviewing patient insurance coverage. Campos is also figuring out how to manage a landscape that has completely shifted. HSC has long operated as a brick-and-mortar company, but it’s also technology-oriented and realized a remote environment has produced greater productivity and versatility. Campos is focused on developing hybrid and flexible schedules that allow for better work-life balance while still ensuring an engaged workforce. The company recently received an Albuquerque Best Place to Work Award for its efforts. “The foundation of any good strategic plan is the talent,” she says. “I love being in charge of trying to bring out the best in people and facilitating an environment that lets people fulfill their potential.” —Kim Catley

Shaking up the system After 20 years working in managed care and insurance, Michael Waterbury, ’95, saw firsthand the problems with the U.S. healthcare system. Now he’s on a mission to fix them. Waterbury started RemedyOne, a company that cuts through the complexity of pharmaceutical programs, in 2015. During the years spent building up RemedyOne, he realized healthcare needs to be fixed one system at a time. He founded Goodroot in 2020 as a parent company to support other entrepreneurs who have ideas for startups that solve specific issues. It provides the finance, legal, sales and marketing services typically available in a larger corporation. Goodroot currently has four subsidiaries that reduce inefficiencies, lower prescription costs, and help small employers negotiate better contracts. The idea arose after Waterbury grew frustrated with corporate America and felt the profit-driven market didn’t align with patient needs. “If I’m going to make a difference, I’ve got to set my own course,” he says. “I’ve got to use what I’ve learned, the relationships I have, the ideas I have. People talk about disrupting healthcare, but we talk about reinventing healthcare one system at a time.” Next up, Waterbury hopes to help patients — who are typically insured — resolve medical debt by reviewing bills, negotiating better prices, and looking to employers to help cover costs. He also wants to fix the issue at the source by working alongside healthcare and insurance companies. “We can't have hospitals sending huge bills and then suing people and garnishing wages and bankrupting them,” he says. “If you go through the system, you have insurance, and you end up with massive bills and you're bankrupt, that's a failure point. We're studying that and we want those who are running these big hospitals and insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies to come to the table, find the solution, and be part of developing and implementing it.” —Kim Catley

A book lover’s dream While it’s a tough question to answer, Laura Keefe DeLange, ’04, says her favorite book is probably Donna Tartt’s The Secret History. As such, her job as senior marketing director at Knopf, Pantheon, and Shocken — all under the Penguin Random House umbrella — had her well-positioned when a colleague shared an anecdote about working with Tartt several years back. It’s just one aspect of DeLange’s literature-oriented job that she loves. “The history at my company is so rich,” she says. “It is exciting to work with people who knew these authors early in their careers and helped to establish them as bestselling writers.” Her job offers a dynamic atmosphere as the publishing world evolves with the times. Take, for instance, DeLange’s use social media to promote books. “When I started working in publishing after graduation, social media didn’t really exist,” she says. “I am part of a generation in publishing that saw its implications, and I learned as it grew and spread.” A history major at UR, DeLange was uncertain of her career path when she graduated. “It didn’t feel right to pursue my master’s or academia,” she says. “But I knew I loved books and reading, so I started looking into publishing.” She landed her first job in the industry through a fellow Spider’s cousin and has never looked back. “I began with a small company that published a lot of history books, so my degree came in handy,” she says. These days she spends her time seeding interest in the work of authors like Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche, Toni Morrison, Emily St. John Mandel, and many others. Although DeLange didn't envision this career path for herself, it has been the perfect fit. “I get to talk about books all day,” she says. “Every new book and campaign is a chance to find a new, specific audience. NATHAN LEMOINE, ’06

Focused on climate change Nate Lemoine, ’06, loved his undergraduate research so much, he’s still doing it today. Except now he’s the professor, teaching ecology at Marquette University. Like Richmond, he explains, Marquette is also heavily focused on undergraduate education. “That’s really important to me, specifically because I had such a good experience at Richmond,” he says. “Most of what I do now is because of what I experienced as an undergrad.” Starting out, Lemoine wanted to become a coral reef ecologist. He says the sea sponges he studied as an undergrad weren’t terribly glamorous, but he loved the work. “[That] got me into ecology and taught me how to do research — and what research even was,” he says. “I had a great time.” His doctoral work lured him back onto dry land, but even as he’s explored different ecosystems, his motivating question has remained the same: What will happen as the climate changes? This spring, the Ecological Society of America named Lemoine an Early Career Fellow for his contributions to his field. It’s among the highest honors a young ecologist can receive, though he’s modest about it. “I saw the other people who got the awards, and they’re all really, really good,” he says. “I can’t tell you what put me in that group as well.” In less than two decades, he’s studied New England bays and Caribbean coral reefs, Colorado grasslands and Wisconsin prairies — and he already has plans in the works to add African savannas to his list. He’s been a champion for improving statistical analysis in ecology and laid important groundwork for predicting effects of climate change. All along the way, he’s providing undergraduate research experiences that will create the next generation of ecologists, like his professors once did for him. —Anna Funk

Hard work up the ladder Plenty of middle school kids want to grow up to be professional football players. Christian Parker, ’13, wanted to be an NFL coach. Parker clearly does not mess around. After four years as a high school player — and four more with the Spiders — Parker made his trajectory switch to coaching with a remarkably fast ascent through the college ranks and then the pros. In February 2021, Parker was named defensive backs coach for the NFL’s Denver Broncos — at the age of 29. Not bad for a guy who was a walk-on to the Richmond team in 2009. (He ended up a scholarship player.) Parker never saw a lot of action as a wide receiver, but as an aspiring tactician, he saw everything. Parker says his observations from the sideline dovetailed with his classroom experience, where he learned the Socratic method of presenting and arguing ideas. “That’s the way that classes are run at Richmond,” he says. “I got used to speaking in front of people, formulating my own ideas, researching and defending them. I think that really prepared me for the coaching world.” After earning his degree in political science, Parker traveled the nation by taking coaching jobs at a series of colleges. Latrell Scott, Richmond’s head football coach in 2010, mentored Parker at Virginia State and Norfolk State. Parker later moved on to positions at William & Mary, Notre Dame, and Texas A&M. In 2019, the Green Bay Packers hired him away from Texas. Two seasons later, the Broncos hired him away from the Packers. Parker says that, as far as he knows, he’s the youngest person at his position level in the NFL. How does a guy find that kind of success? “Well, I was always told to just keep your head where your feet are,” he says. “Do a great job, and success is going to find you.” —Glenn McDonald

From São Paulo to London Drika Bianchin, ’15, isn’t afraid of a challenge. “My mantra is: I will either find a way or make a way, no matter what,” she says. The former captain of the Spider women’s soccer team was recently named vice president for consulting accounts for AlphaSights, a leader in knowledge-on-demand that connects companies with industry professionals to address business challenges. She’s a member of the London-based European Leadership Team, contributing to strategy creation and new product development. Originally from São Paulo, Brazil, she moved to the U.S. at 16 to play soccer. During her time at Richmond, she was a student-athlete, a business major, and a volunteer translator at the World Pediatric Project. It hasn’t been an easy road for her. As a student-athlete, she had two surgeries that set her back in her goals as a player. “I’ve learned a lot about mental toughness, determination, and discipline,” she says. “I learned resiliency. My injuries taught me about overcoming obstacles and focusing on what’s within my control to bounce back from challenges.” She uses that resiliency every day as vice president. “I treat my career almost like a season. I know that I have good days and bad days, but I keep myself focused on my outcome and my personal growth,” she says. After graduation, she knew she wanted a commercial-facing role where she could make an impact early in her career. Over the past six years, she has moved up the ranks from associate to vice president and helped AlphaSights rank as one of the UK’s best workplaces. “I am proud of the team I’ve been part of these six years and our ability to scale and become a leading player in the information services industry,” she says. “At Richmond, I learned how to create a team environment where everyone feels supported and wants to achieve great things together.” —Nicole Hansen

’14 All packed, ready to go Like so many people, Shira Smillie, ’18, is eager to make up for more than a year of travel adventures lost to the pandemic. But the author of the Black Girl World Traveller blog advises readers to temper their expectations of what they’ll experience as countries reopen for travel. “I’m happy to see travel reemerging,” she says. “But with curfews and quarantines and other restrictions, you aren’t going to see countries in the same way you would before. It may not be the full, authentic experience.” Smillie credits a trip to Cuba at the conclusion of her Sophomore Scholars in Residence program for sparking her love of travel. She followed it up with a study-abroad semester in Ecuador and, after a year of saving, celebrated her graduation with an eight-week 14-country backpacking blitz through Europe. She subsequently put her Spanish degree to use, working as a translator and teacher in Murcia, Spain. She originally launched blackgirlworldtraveller .com to help her remember her European travels, but it soon took on a larger dimension. “I started hearing from people who were inspired by it, and it slowly transitioned into an outlet for encouraging Black women to not only travel, but travel solo,” she says. Her podcasts on YouTube — featuring locales from Morocco to Trinidad to the U.S. Southwest — have bolstered her social media following. The Philadelphia native has since written the e-book Backpacking While Black and plans to launch an agency, PennyPacker Travels, in the fall. Both are designed to help others dream, plan, and budget for their own post-pandemic travel adventures. “I want people to realize that travel can be accessible and affordable for everyone,” she says. —Kristin Baird Rattini
