KEY SERVICES •• Data capture •• E nergy and CO2 baseline modelling •• Feasibility studies •• Rapid Energy Modelling (REM) •• Energy auditing •• Thermal imaging •• D etermining the investment business case •• DECs & EPC assessment •• Energy Management Strategy •• Carbon Governance

Assessment Energy efficiency is one of the most effective ways for companies to address rising costs and increasing statutory regulation. By understanding the current energy and carbon management position of an organisation, URS can develop a robust business case for investing in improvements.

URS has the capability to help businesses achieve improved energy efficiency and adapt to the regulatory landscape while ensuring operational continuity and a steady return on investments.

WE HAVE EXPERIENCED ENERGY MANAGERS AND AUDITORS OPERATING AROUND THE GLOBE, INCLUDING ISO 50001 LEAD ASSESSORS. Our team has extensive experience in developing and implementing the resources necessary for energy and carbon measurement and performance management.

6

We have developed tools to appraise how organisations really use energy and understand where the most cost effective improvements can be made. Our assessments not only establish the technical opportunities within your operations but also recognise the savings that can be realised through behavioural and organisational change. We recognise that different stakeholders require the assessment findings presented in different ways including detailed technical specifications, benchmarks, financial payback and Value at Stake calculations.

RAPID ENERGY MODELLING REM is an innovative technique that uses 3D building assessment to create powerful, accurate energy models for simulating design changes or building improvements. It efficiently provides building owners with a deep understanding of a building’s energy use to allow the development of solutions that generate cost savings on energy consumption, reduce CO2 emissions and enhance the quality of a building’s environment.

PROJECT PROFILES Kraft Global URS provided energy audit and re-commissioning services at 14 of Kraft’s manufacturing facilities. We identified £6 millon of annual savings representing a reduction of more than 16% of their annual energy spend.

Heron House, UK URS has identified potential savings of £60,000 per annum at Manchester City Council’s (MCC) main office, Heron House. The workplace for around 350 staff was opened in 1982 – 30 years on, the naturally ventilated courtyard configuration office has aged well but falls well short of modern energy standards. A one day site visit enabled the URS team to construct the Rapid Energy Model and develop a series of improvement options with a cost-benefit analysis. We are currently working with MCC to implement these measures and also identify further savings across the portfolio.

REM can be used to improve existing buildings or to optimise new building design at the masterplanning stage. It provides insight into the energy performance of buildings based on their specific design and usage including: •• Accurate energy and carbon footprint based on a 3D building performance model – no need for drawings or legacy data •• Identification of the largest energy uses in the building and anomalies such as a poorly controlled plant •• Rapid simulation of improvement scenarios including building fabric and glazing, lighting design, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and renewable technologies •• Modelling of the building environment including day lighting levels and thermal comfort

European Tyre Manufacturer URS has worked extensively with one of Europe’s largest tyre manufacturers, carrying out detailed site energy audits of their UK and EU based sites to investigate energy use and provided recommendations for improvements. Through detailed data mining of sub meter data we developed detailed ‘energy maps’ to understand how and where the most energy was being used. We also developed guidance for an energy management reporting system, suggested improvements in data management and helped the business use this data to develop a top-down energy management campaign. The project also investigated aspects like sharing of best practice between sites and awareness of energy management procedures and policy to establish where more work was needed to improve employee engagement. 7

KEY SERVICES •• E nergy efficiency programmes and technology selection •• LZC technologies/renewables •• Capital projects analysis •• B usiness case and funding options •• Energy performance partnerships •• S upply and demand side energy management •• R egistered Low Carbon Consultants •• Technical advisor

PROJECT PROFILES Morriston and Singleton Hospital, UK URS was engaged to assess the feasibility of a number of CHP options. The study drew together a number of strategic phasing implications of mid- and long-term hospital expansion plans, whilst also seeking to maximise the economic savings available in the short to medium term. The completed study demonstrated how the central integration of CHP could radically reduce their energy-related environmental footprints and also reduce energy-related costs over the life of the plant.

Brent Civic Centre, UK URS designed a biofuel Combined Cooling Heat and Power (CCHP) system as of the sustainability and building services commission Brent Civic Centre in Wembley, recently completed and inaugurated as the greenest public building centre in the UK. Achieving a BREEAM Outstanding rating of >85% required an innovative solution; URS’s energy specialists worked from an early stage with the architects and design team to optimise the solution for the 30,000 m2 mixed use building, minimising energy consumption and maximising natural daylighting. An assessment of the possible low and zero carbon energy supply options established that renewable-fuelled CCHP was the preferred option for providing a sustainable, reliable, long term energy solution and achieving the CO2 reduction targets.

Energy Action List for Government Departments, UK URS developed an Energy Action List to allow government departments to cross-check current building operation against best practice measures, identify energy saving opportunities, and progress through to implementation projects that cost-effectively reduce the consumption of energy, thereby allowing them to develop a simple business case for investment. The checklists were designed to permit both technical and non-technical personnel to begin the process of evaluating opportunities to reduce energy consumption whilst maintaining the core function of providing a comfortable working environment.

Major UK Beverage Bottler CHP This ongoing project involves the viability, development and design of a “Quadgeneration” 5 MW Combined Cooling Heat and Power Plant with Carbon Capture and Purification at a major operational UK site. URS validated the outline scheme concept and developed a number of options around core technology and configuration, providing a detailed comparison in terms of whole life cost, technical, operational and environmental considerations. URS produced a design for the preferred scheme and submitting a detailed planning application.
