Civil War in Virginia: The War’s Last Year Having failed to destroy Gen. Robert E. Lee’s Confederate forces in the spring of 1864, Gen. U.S. Grant crossed the James River with his Union forces and assaulted Confederate troops defending the critical road and rail junction at Petersburg. The last full year of the Civil War in Virginia began with a series of hard-fought battles around Petersburg before settling into brutal siege operations that would characterize the winter’s war. In the Shenandoah Valley, Gen. Phil Sheridan’s Union forces laid waste to much of the Valley and defeated Jubal Early’s Rebel troops. The final, desperate chapter opens with the disastrous losses suffered by Lee’s forces in Southside Virginia that led, finally, to Appomattox. We will use a variety of materials supplied by the instructor in four class sessions focusing on the Battle of the Crater in Petersburg, the 1864 campaign in the Shenandoah Valley, key battles in the spring of 1865, and Lee’s retreat to Appomattox. The course concludes with a Saturday bus field trip to Petersburg and to Appomattox led by the instructor.. The University of Richmond School of Continuing Studies has partnered with Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden to offer a series of courses for the home gardener and those with a general interest in plants and flowers. All courses and seminars are offered in the Education Center at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, 1800 Lakeside Avenue, Richmond, VA.

Landscape as Spirit

The Beginner’s Perennial Garden

The garden as a place of meditation and spiritual renewal is examined by landscape architect Martin Mosko and writer Alxe Noden. Both draw on their experience with Buddhism—Mosko is a Zen monk—to express their beliefs that the garden can and should reflect the inner spirit. They will discuss the construction of a “spiritual” garden as a refuge for the spirit, and the elements of a harmonious garden design that will provide a path of growth for your garden and your spirit. Martin Mosko, ASLA, founded the landscape design and construction firm Marpa and Associates in 1974. He studied painting and Sanskrit at Yale, and has apprenticed with Japanese master gardeners. In addition to his responsibilities at Marpa, he teaches at Naropa University and travels the country lecturing on garden design and meditation. Alxe Noden was educated at Cornell and Boston University School of Law and studied Tibetan Buddhism. She is an accomplished writer and photographer. Copies of Mosko and Noden’s book, Landscape as Spirit, will be for sale before and after the lecture, and the authors will sign their book.

Carefully chosen and properly planted, perennials can provide an almost year-round color in an easy-care garden. Every fall, residents of the United States and Canada marvel at the annual migration of colorful Monarch butterflies—but where are they going? Professor Lincoln P. Brower and his graduate students at Sweet Briar College know; they have conducted research at the over wintering sites of this butterfly in the central highlands of Mexico since 1977. Learn how some researchers think monarchs find their way to Mexico and how the high altitude Oyamel fir forest serves as blanket, umbrella and hot water bottle for millions of monarchs. Dr. Brower will examine threats to this fragile migration cycle, from forest exploitation to the devastating 2002 storm in central Mexico that killed a quarter of a billion Monarchs, and will share promising conservation initiatives by the World Wildlife Fund of Mexico and by the US, Canadian and Mexican governments. Includes admission to the garden and the butterfly exhibit.
