1996 Modlin Center for the Arts In 1996 the University of Richmond’s impact on the Richmond community took two new turns with the opening of the $22.5 million Modlin Center for the Arts and the establishment of the Office of Community and Professional Education in the School of Continuing Studies. The Modlin Center attracts more than 100,000 people annually to its world-class performing and visual arts events. And the Office of Community and Professional Education touches tens of thousands of non-credit students in Richmond and beyond with its Think Again catalog and various partnerships throughout Virginia and the United States.

Dear Members of the SCS Community:
We have celebrated some monumental anniversaries during my tenure as dean–the School’s 40th anniversary in 2002 and my 10th in 2005–but the excitement generated by the birth of the non-credit program, Think Again, has proved to be a defining moment in our development and so clearly exemplifies our mission: To Enrich Lives and Careers. I want to particularly acknowledge the efforts of Dr. Patricia Johnson Brown for her original concept for both the program and its implementation. Dr. Brown arrived on campus as associate dean in 1995 specifically to develop a non-credit curriculum that would mirror our successful evening school credit programs, with an emphasis on the liberal arts.
Special Thanks
From an initial offering of 12 courses that enrolled 72 participants, the program has grown to hundreds of offerings with more than 5,000 enrollments annually. Our creative and diligent staff has expanded the programming to fall, spring and summer editions, under the auspices of the Office of Community and Professional Education, directed by Pam Johnson.
As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Think Again and our non-credit programs, we’d like to give special thanks to Dr. Patricia Johnson Brown, Associate Dean, for her original concept for both the program and its implementation.
The publication has brought enormous recognition to the School and to the University, for which we are grateful. But, most importantly, Think Again provides learners of all ages with an opportunity to engage in the continuous pursuit of learning. This course will focus on what audiences want to hear and how we can effectively reach them. You’re on the Air! How to Really Make it in VoiceOvers! Voice-overs are hot today! You don’t have to be an actor to get voice-over work, but it certainly doesn’t hurt. With such notable talents as James Earl Jones, Linda Hunt, and Donald Sutherland lending their voices to commercials, films, and videos, one would think that it would be next to impossible to break into this field. Not so. You’ll learn about an exciting, new way to get around the competition and actually turn voice-overs into a thriving full or part-time business. Dan Levine (commercial producer and Tony Award-nominated Broadway composer) will discuss the voice-over business as a whole, the numerous opportunities, the incredible income potential, and will discuss the all important “demo” and how to have it produced. You’ll step up to the microphone and do some practice recording, and best of all, you’ll hear the results. Landscape Design Program The Landscape Design Program is offered in cooperation with our partner in education, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. The curriculum focuses on training individuals to work independently as designers of small-scale landscapes and has been designed for landscape professionals, horticulture staff, and gardeners with an interest in plants and design. This intensive program has two certificate options. Completion of the entire program (earning two certificates) requires 17 courses and usually takes two to three years of part-time evening study.
What’s Included in the Program? All Landscape Design Program classes are held at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, our partnerin education.

NEW! Film noir generally refers to the mystery/crime dramas produced from the mid-1940s to the late 1950s. These movies were shot in black and white, and featured stories involving femme fatales, doomed heroes/anti-heroes, and tough yet cynical detectives. Neo-noir refers to crime dramas and mysteries produced from the late 1950s to present, that, while they are generally shot in color and do not always emulate the visual style of classic film noir, often borrow themes, archetypes, and plots made famous by the earlier films. Fitness Instructional Programs Movement with music in the water best describes this course that develops the whole body. Strength, endurance and flexibility are developed in routinelike patterns choreographed to lively music. This cardiovascular workout includes resistance and strength training as well as deep-water exercises to build stamina. By the end of the 6 weeks, participants should be able to perform a self-directed meditative session and a well-balanced routine that form the basis of their stress management by revitalizing the body and calming the mind. This course is an introduction to taiji quan, China’s famous slowmoving, internal martial art. Students learn the basics of Wu Style, one of the five major styles of taiji. Drawing Expressively from Botanical Subjects
The Grand Saga of the Monarch Butterfly
After a brief survey of artists who have made use of botanical imagery, try your hand at using botanical subject matter to explore the expressive possibilities of mixed media on paper. Previous drawing experience is helpful but not necessary. Some supplies are provided and additional materials will be suggested in the first class. Please note: this class does not address botanical illustration; some techniques introduced in the class are messy.
Every fall, residents of the United States and Canada marvel at the annual migration of colorful Monarch butterflies—but where are they going? Professor Lincoln P. Brower and his graduate students at Sweet Briar College know; they have conducted research at the overwintering sites of this butterfly in the central highlands of Mexico since 1977. Learn how some researchers think monarchs find their way to Mexico, and how the high altitude rain forest serves as blanket, umbrella, and hot water bottle for millions of monarchs. Dr. Brower will examine threats to this fragile migration cycle, from forest exploitation to the devasting 2002 storm in central Mexico that killed a quarter of a billion monarchs, and will share promising conservation initiatives by the World Wildlife Fund of Mexico, and by the US, Canadian, and Mexican governments. Course fee includes admission to the Garden. As a special touch, students from Crestwood Elementary School, a Monarch Watch school, will join us for their charming and touching “Monarch Dance”!

King Tut Exhibit–Bus Tour to Franklin Institute, Philadelphia, PA NEW! The first blockbuster exhibition of the 21st century and drawing record crowds in America, the spectacular King Tut exhibit is coming to Philadelphia–and we have secured tickets to see it! Perception of Paradise: A Tour of Bali
The beautiful Shenandoah Valley was the “breadbasket of the Confederacy” and served as an “avenue of invasion” for both the Federal and Confederate armies during the war. Although the Valley saw nearly continuous military action from 1861 to 1865, the major campaigns of 1862 and 1864 will serve as the primary focus for this course. This class will review the fascinating “Valley Campaign” of General Stonewall Jackson, the impacts of war on the civilian population of the Valley, and the critically important summer campaign of 1864, during which the Valley was seized by Federal forces. A day-long bus tour of selected sites of the 1862 and 1864 campaigns in midNovember allows students to walk over the actual battlegrounds.

In this class, we will use various creativity enhancement techniqes, such as brainstorming, thought monitoring, and visualization, to help you become a more creative photographer. NEW! The Richmond Ice Zone’s skating class offers four levels that adults, ages 18 and up, can progress through at their own pace. Classes will teach the basic skills needed to learn to skate for fun and fitness and, if the skater chooses, to pursue figure skating, hockey, or speed skating. Skaters will learn how to fall and recover, forward and backward skating skills, stopping and more advanced skills such as crossovers, turning and jumping as the skater is ready. Skaters may wear elbow and/or knee pads, wrist guards and a helmet if they choose. Skate rental is included in tuition cost. Poker Mania Poker is the ultimate combination of psychology and mathematics, and it is sweeping the nation! This fast paced course is designed for the bright and aspiring poker enthusiasts. The first class will focus on the math behind probabilities and odds. Starting hand selection will be analyzed and then the odds of common drawing hands will be calculated. You will play poker with monopoly money with frequent stops to review the odds of various situations. Culinary Arts Program
The Culinary Arts Program (CAP) is an exciting hands-on series of food preparation classes designed for home cooks with a variety of experience looking to expand their culinary knowledge. CAP students learn skills and cooking techniques from local food experts. We’ll teach you everything from basic kitchen safety to the preparation of a multi-course meal. Plus you’ll have the opportunity to explore a variety of cuisine and food topics including regional specialties, breads, desserts, ethnic cooking and more. If you’re really serious about cooking, enroll in the CAP Certificate. It’s a 36-hour program that includes four core courses, three electives (topics change each semester), and a Certified Executive Chef Review course. Once you have obtained your CAP Certificate, you’ll be eligible to participate in our advanced Special Series courses. This special series of classes is designed specifically for students who have completed our CAP Certificate and want to continue to learn and expand on their knowledge. Each Special Series will focus on a type of cuisine or food topic and will meet for multiple sessions. Series topics will change each semester so you will always find something new to learn!
Certificate Eligibility and Graduation In order to receive the certificate, you must attend and successfully complete 36 hours of the program. Prior to completing your final class, Certified Executive Chef Review, you will be required to fill out the Graduation Application and pay the $75 fee. After completing the C.E.C. Review, you will be eligible to graduate. A CAP Graduation ceremony will be held to honor students. This reception is open to all graduates, and their family and friends. Graduates will receive their Culinary Arts Program Certificate, their graduation apron and cookbook. The graduation ceremony is held each year in month of June.

Class Location Most courses are held on the University of Richmond campus, but some are held at local businesses. Exact locations are sent to the participant in a confirmation letter before the course begins.

Accreditation The University of Richmond is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the associate, baccalaureate, master and juris doctorate degrees. The several colleges and schools of the University award no degrees individually. The University of Richmond confers all degrees for work done in any one of the schools.

Continuing Education Units Some courses in this catalog qualify for CEUs (Continuing Education Units). CEUs are a way of measuring and officially recognizing the time and effort you have put into your education for your job or profession. The Office of the University Registrar will maintain a record of your CEUs and provide you with a transcript upon request. So, what do you do with a CEU? As you update your credentials, are in line for a transfer, promotion or evaluation of your current position, or want to make a vocational change or explore a new career, the CEUs demonstrate the time, energy and interest you have shown in broadening your horizons.
Registration Deadlines It is extremely important that you register at least one week prior to the start of the course. Registration deadlines have been put in place to allow for an accurate enrollment count needed for planning classroom needs, course materials, and food or travel logistics related to the class. If you submit your registration after the deadline, we cannot guarantee that you will receive a space in the course.
