Nonprofit Boards Development Series Board/CEO Awareness: The Value of Outcome Measures The Institute on Philanthropy strives to strengthen the community and inspire charitable giving by educating professionals, volunteers and donors about the practices and purposes of nonprofit fundraising and development. Our aim: Helping You Help Others Our classes are designed with fund raising and development professionals in mind, but much of the information can be applied to religious, political, and foundation settings. NEW! Nonprofit Boards Development Series is a special group of classes for board members or professionals who manage or work with boards. NEW! Two new professional certificate options are now available.
To register for IOP classes, please fax your registration form to (804) 484-1474.
Oftentimes, board and staff members of nonprofit organizations see funder requests for outcome measures as intrusive and burdensome because there is a perception that defining appropriate measures is difficult (if not impossible) and onerous to track. This course will show how defining appropriate measures need not be the difficult task some perceive and how tracking outcome measures can be blended into normal operations. It will also show the benefit of providing this information in organizational literature – both educational and funding related Date: Tuesday, Jan. 9 Time: 6–8 p.m. CRN: 80182 Fee: $45 CEUs: 0.2 Instructor: Gail T. Merridew, MPA, NMC; Nonprofit Management Solutions, LLC
Stable and Predictable or Fresh Thinking–Transition Planning for Boards A long standing board member can be very knowledgeable and comforting – or she can become complacent. A new board member can bring fresh ideas – or envelope-pushing ones that are hard to manage. What does your nonprofit need and how do you manage that transition? Why does it matter so much to have the right board profile for your organization. Most difficult: How do you get from where you are to where you need to be? This workshop will explore those
questions, but be advised that this is a tough issue to tackle – and you’re not alone in needing to do it. Date: Thursday, Feb. 8 Time: 6–8 p.m. CRN: 80446 Fee: $45 CEUs: 0.2 Instructor: Katherine Whitney, Director Warren, Whitney & Sherwood
How to Effectively Recruit & Retain Board Members Recruiting and retaining effective board members may be one of the most important things you do in the life of your organization. However, experience is that all too often recruitment is too much a last-minute task accomplished with too little planning. Therefore, we will begin our time together in discussion related to the importance of taking the time, getting organized, and using your best imagination and contacts to put together a top-notch, diverse, and enthused group of potential board members. We will review the most effective ways to enlist these potential board members. And finally, once you have recruited enthusiastic new members, we will focus on how to best orient, train, and engage them in your organization’s work. Following this process will result in board members’ finding meaningful value to their contributions, and it will allow you to maximize the results for your organization. Date: Thursday, March 22 Time: 6–8 p.m. CRN: 80494 Fee: $45 CEUs: 0.2 Instructor: Jennifer Sager, Ed.D., Vice Chancellor, Institutional Advancement, Virginia Community College System

This course will explore the basics of charitable gift annuities and how your organization can benefit from this popular form of giving, which also gives money back to donors. We will make gift annuities simple, but also look at some sophisticated ways of offering them to donors. Designed for charities and for donors, we will examine them from a charity’s point of view, including the income and capital gains tax benefits as well as the payments to the donor. The course is designed for those who are new to fundraising, want to grow their
fundraising, or for individuals who want to give more wisely. No financial experience is necessary. (Note any donors interested in gift annuities should be over the age of 60.) Nancy Trego, Senior Vice President for Financial Development at the YMCA of Greater Richmond, will lead a discussion of the theory and practice of working with volunteers. Online Fundraising Basics Your website is being used to evaluate your organization. Period. With roughly 95% of nonprofit organizations working with annual budgets of less than $5 million, a $50,000 website seems out of the question. Does that mean that a successful web site is not possible for the majority of nonprofits? Absolutely not.
There are some basic elements that can be incorporated into any nonprofit website. In this class we will identify these elements and explore some lowcost alternative solutions. This class will benefit fundraisers, communications managers or executive directors. Dates: Tuesdays, March 6 & 13 Time: 9 a.m.–noon CRN: 80692 Fee: $150 Instructor: Heather Fignar, MPA, Managing Partner, NPAdvisors.com
Planned Giving for the 21st Century – Tip of the Iceberg Into the foreseeable future, traditional fundraising will continue to provide the financial foundation that keeps the lights on and the water hot. Looming on the horizon, however, are a myriad of demographic, social, and financial factors that point to a fundraising harvest for those non-profits that act now to bolster their bequest awareness and planned giving efforts. This course offers a “view from the trenches” of a successful school planned giving program that consistently enjoys $1-3 million every year in deferred giving activity. How does pursuing planned gifts differ from raising outright/capital gifts? How can deferred gifts help now? How does a small shop raise these gifts without a dedicated planned giving officer? What must a governing board do to promote success? Our study will also provide a working knowledge of each of the eight most common gifts in this area, including their main tax features.

The series offers an extended definition of the essential qualities of Western civilization through an examination of its chief monuments and important locations. Students will begin by examining the philsophical foundations of the Cold War, focusing on the manifestation of Marxism-Leninism in the Soviet Union. Students will consider the events of the Cold War from both perspectives, analyze changes in foreign policy, and even postulate on each party’s culpability. Finally, students will consider the shift in diplomatic relations following the Cuban Missile Crisis and conclude with an analysis of the Soviet Union’s demise in 1991.

A Place to Take Root: The History of Flowerpots & Garden Containers in North America A Place to Take Root is the first exhibition devoted to the evolution of the common flower pot. Flowerpots today are so taken for granted that little thought is given to how and why they evolved. But the story of the flowerpot is the history of the development of horticulture. Curator Susan Tamulevich visits this history, then leads a tour of the exhibit to discover the history of flowerpots in the United States. Over 120 pots are on display including finely-detailed Italian terracotta, a wood and cast-iron French tree tub, an English horticultureware rhubarb forcer, traditional regional American pots, and the latest in plastic orchid pots and ornamental urns. Includes a dessert reception. Date: Thursday, Apr. 26 Time: 6:30–8:30 p.m. CRN: 80558 Fee: $40 Instructor: Susan Tamulevich

Morning Lectures: 9–11:30 a.m. “Innovation Within Tradition” The work of Ben Page and Associates LLD consciously touches on a strong base of tradition to produce residential landscapes in which history informs a sophisticated, contemporary aesthetic. “…gardens speak to the senses. Theirs is a visual, tactile, fragrant language… With every season, its characters form and re-form in an intricate interplay of colors, textures, and shapes. Our role is to weave a fresh plot with each garden we design. Utilizing classic principles handed down by centuries of gardeners, we create a theme for each garden. To communicate drama. Or, perhaps whimsy. Clear twists that pique the imagination.”

“One of America's three most under-rated destinations!” Five thousand years of history and more than a dozen major cultures, amazing landscapes and towns, gifted guides, food and hotels. Then there’s ancient Ephesus and Istanbul, the rarely-visited Hittite lands and our personal home visits. Need we say more?
Inside the pyramids...Tut’s tomb...Abu Simbel...the Nile Cruise...and many of the more unusual sites and special archaeological visits the others don't even think of including. Don't miss the trip of a lifetime for a matter of a few hundred dollars. The best Egyptian trip available, if you really want to see Egypt!
THE “DEEP” AMAZON...AND RIO

January 27-February 9, 2008 Cost: TBA
Our last visit to this rapidlyvanishing unique destination! We'll go far beyond civilization to the Amazon before it's cut down and civilized--aboard a small boat with all amenities (including AC!) Then three days to Rio de Janiero, one of the world's most beautiful cities! Nearly filled--don't delay!
Our 3rd Advanced trip and we're again going where few have gone before! Starting with Egypt's most beautiful site, we'll go south of the border by boat and 4-wheel vehicle through the ancient Nubia...and visit the confluence of the Blue and White Niles! Only 5 spaces remain!
Cost: TBA
One of our most-popular trips, this has all those sites you remember from history! Athens, Delphi and Olympia: they're all here along with a few off-thebeaten destinations that keep our travelers coming back for more! Our last trip here–join us for Greek Odyssey 07! 56
