The Pension Protection Act of 2006

A brief introduction to the nature and scope of public administration, including political and cultural enviroments. This introductory class will provide students with a foundation to develop a high-quality strategic plan (either short-term or long-range). Thinking Out of the Box This course is designed for people who want to explore their creative side, especially as it relates to their work. Based on theories found in Betty Edwards’ “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain”, and the instructor’s twenty years of experience as a theater practitioner, we will explore a new way of “seeing”. The goal is to empower the student to impact their audience through the use of all the senses, develop creative communication and flexibility in finding the right solution to specific problems.

Finance Comprehensive Income Tax Preparation This 60-hour course will give students a solid foundation in individual tax preparation, enabling you to complete all of the standard returns. There are no entrance requirements. With this knowledge, you can earn extra money as a tax professional. This course focuses on the majority of tax forms needed to fill out tax returns for yourself and the general public. In the course you should acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to complete federal income tax returns and research tax issues. Because “practice makes perfect,” the course requires at least two tax returns prepared for most lessons, one of which will be done as a class project and one of which will be completed individually and submitted to your instructor. Interior Decorating: Color Theory

Careers in Interior Decorating

In this class students will work with a Brewster color wheel and learn to produce beautiful rooms for any interior. We will start by examining rooms that have been produced by top decorators and train our eye to see what color theory was used to get these stunning results. We will discuss the psychological effects of individual colors and we will examine the warm and cool colors located on the color wheel and learn how to produce ‘award-winning’ palettes for our own rooms. Tints, values, shades, intensity, primary and secondary hues and muting colors will be taught. The student will learn to produce monochromatic, complementary, achromatic, neutral, direct, split and triad complement, double and alternate complement and tetrad color schemes all with the use of your color wheel. The student will work with boards/sheets and will mix acrylic paints.

In this course students will learn professional techniques of commercial interior plant care. Emphasis will be placed on demonstration whenever practical. Students will learn to recognize approximately 100 different species of tropical plants as well as their specific care, culture, and function in the interior landscape. Particular attention will be paid to quality and aesthetics of plants care in the commercial setting.

Learn the different options of careers available to you in the field of interior decorating. The class covers starting and building your interior decorating business, business forms, record keeping, marketing, and selling your service.

Planned Giving for the 21st Century – Tip of the Iceberg Into the foreseeable future, traditional fundraising will continue to provide the financial foundation that keeps the lights on and the water hot. Looming on the horizon, however, are a myriad of demographic, social, and financial factors that point to a fundraising harvest for those non-profits that act now to bolster their bequest awareness and planned giving efforts. This course offers a “view from the trenches” of a successful school planned giving program that consistently enjoys $1-3 million every year in deferred giving activity. How does pursuing planned gifts differ from raising outright/capital gifts? How can deferred gifts help now? How does a small shop raise these gifts without a dedicated planned giving officer? Landscape Design Professional Certificate Program

Landscape Design Program The Landscape Design Program is offered in cooperation with our partner in education, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. The curriculum focuses on training individuals to work independently as designers of small-scale landscapes and has been designed for landscape professionals, horticulture staff, and gardeners with an interest in plants and design. This intensive program has two certificate options. Completion of the entire program (earning two certificates) requires 17 courses and usually takes three to four years of part-time evening study.

Introduction to Plants

History of Garden Design

An intensive survey course in plant science which provides a basic introduction and understanding of plant ecology, nomenclature, physiology, morphology and pathology. Students learn the common groups of plants with a general focus on the structure and function of higher vascular plants. This course is suitable for those who have no previous experience or who have a limited background in horticulture or design work. This is an open enrollment course and is the prerequisite for the Woody Landscape Plants certificate program. Open to anyone who is interested in enrolling.

This course presents the major traditions in landscape design history through a series of slideillustrated lectures. Students are required to actively participate in subject-related exercises in the classroom, out-of-class projects, and numerous readings on their own time. This is an introductory level course and must be completed prior to enrolling in the certificate track. Open to anyone who is interested in enrolling.

Woody Landscape Plants Certificate This certificate program emphasizes plants and their landscape value in their growing environment, with classes meeting at local gardens and nurseries. Field classes are supplemented by lectures on various aspects of horticulture, nursery and planting standards. This certificate is ideally suited for landscape desgn and maintenance professionals seeking to upgrade skills as well as horticulture staff, nursery employees and gardeners with an interest in plants and designs. Landscape Design Certificate Courses Introduction to Design In this course, students begin to create a vocabulary with which they can both describe and critique their own designs and the work of others. Develop an understanding of design tools available to the landscape designer through analysis of existing landscapes. Explore design through media other than the landscape. Complete an introduction to study models, research techniques and writing. Students are expected to complete group projects and participate in review sessions. Prerequisite: Landscape Graphics.

Site Analysis This course is designed to train students how to investigate natural and cultural data of a design site. Students learn to inventory and record existing site conditions, including slope, soil, microclimate and context. Studio and site work includes base plans, sections and site program. Site Engineering

Site Design I

One of two construction courses offered in this track, this course provides an introduction to the principles of basic site engineering with an emphasis on kills in grading. Students are expected to devise solutions to small scale problems by applying their understanding of environmental factors. Studio and take-home exercises are assigned and presented by students upon completion. Prerequisite: Site Analysis.

This is the first studio design course in the final year of the design program. Focus is on analyzing the requirements of the program and the site to develop designs. Learn how to respond to both client needs and environmental context through lectures, site visits and design projects. This course provides a continuation of the development of graphic techniques. Prerequisites: Construction Methods and Materials, Site Engineering and History of Garden Design.

Planting Design I

Comprehensive Project

This course is a continuation of Site Design I. Students are expected to further develop visual communication skills learned in the prior course. Participation in graphics demonstrations and exercises, individual critiques, and group discussions of projects is required. Prerequisite: Site Design I.

This studio course focuses on the use of plants as an important design element. Topics include plants in contemporary design, plant characteristics, cultural requirements, environmental factors, plant selection, the process of planting design, planting specificifications,planting details,planting cost estimates and continued development of graphic skills. Prerequisite: Site Design II and Woody Landscape Plants Certificate

This course is the final design studio course as well as the final course in the Landscape Design Certificate program. Students must demonstrate their understanding and command of the art and discipline of design of landscape, planting design, site analysis garden construction and methods and materials and site drainage. Students are expected to show understanding of basic construction standards and codes and to think critically about design and solving design problems. Under the direction of a practicing professional, students will prepare a full set of design and working drawings for a selected site which will be presented to a jury of professionals. Master’s of Landscape Architecture It is now easier for landscape design students to expand their studies to include a Master’s of Landscape Architecture degree (MLA). Thanks to an educational partnership between the University of Richmond and Virginia Tech, UR Landscape Design Certificate graduates have the opportunity to apply to Virginia Tech’s MLA program–in its Washington Alexandria Architecture Center in Virginia–with one year’s advanced standing. This approach allows interested, capable and motivated individuals to acquire the additional knowledge and skills needed to become a landscape architect. Plus, it serves as a resource for midcareer professionals to pursue studies in landscape architecture. And all students benefit from the unique international character of the Washington Alexandria Architecture Center. Arboriculture Pruning for Woody Ornamentals I

Our series of Arboriculture courses are designed for landscapers, arborists, nurserymen, urban foresters, and horticulturist. They are not a part of the Landscape Design Certificate track.

Joel Koci shares 30 years of experience practicing Arbor Culture as a certified arborist. He has an M.S. in Horticulture from VPI and is a member of the American Society of Consulting Arborists. Joel currently owns and operates ARBORCARE, Inc. a professional tree service in Richmond Virginia and surrounding areas.

Identifying Insects and their effect on Woody Ornamentals New Arboriculture Class! This class will explore and identify the cause and effect of Insect infestations. Animal Studies Reading Rover–An Introduction to Dog Body Language and Communication

‘‘ ’’ Sarah Babcock has a real love for dogs and a clear understanding of how they think and behave. I enjoyed the topics on body language, training, temperament, and the observation sessions in the class.

Ever wonder what your dog is trying to tell you? Need a translator? In this course we will examine how dogs communicate with each other–and what happens when canine and human communication collide. Topics include interpreting dog body language, dog play (naughty and nice), and the complex interaction between man and his best friend. Course is for humans only–please leave dogs at home. Canine Logic COME, SIT and STAY awhile–and learn about the science behind all methods of dog training! With a promise to make the material fun and easyto-grasp, we will investigate both operant conditioning (think B.F. Skinner), and classical conditioning (think Ivan Pavlov) - and look at how both can either help or hinder your attempts at training. We will look at the history of dog training, investigate popular training methods and equipment, and take a look at what tools might work best for “fixing” specific doggie issues. We will also look at dog-dog communication (in love and war) and how doghuman communication works best based on some understanding of “their” language. Based on student feedback from 2006, we will now offer an optional hands-on lab component each evening using shelter or Richmond SPCA staff dogs. Students can purchase the optional textbooks from the instructor on the first night of class (approximately $25). Class is for humans only please leave your dog at home. Art and Leisure Sewing for Beginners NEW! This course is for anyone who wants to learn how to sew. No experience is required, and we will explore the very basics of hand and machine sewing. Photography: Buttons and Wheels We all know what it’s like getting a new gadget, in this case a camera, and being overwhelmed by all its modes and dials. Many proud camera owners just give up and turn the dial to the automatic mode, ignoring those “buttons and wheels” for which they paid dearly. Which buttons and wheels do you need to understand in order to take a really good photograph? Learn about the bells and whistles on your camera and which ones are the important ones to know. Find out how to capture that outstanding image you have been pursuing. Learn how to “take” a good photograph in camera, so you spend less time tweaking the image in photoshop - some mistakes cannot be fixed! Digital and Film users are both welcome since, first of all, most cameras have a multitude of buttons and wheels to know, and secondly, proper exposure is the key to creating a unique photograph. The basics are the same for both digital and film. Come to this class and learn how to make your camera dance to your tune!

Dance Beginner Ballroom Dancing Haven’t you always wanted to learn how to Ballroom Dance? Wouldn’t that special someone love to sail around the floor with you? Well now you can learn and have a blast doing it! This course will focus on Ballroom, Swing and Latin dances–specifically Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Swing, Cha Cha and Rhumba. Ballroom dancing is also a great form of exercise that will improve coordination and balance. Classes will be held at Rigby’s Jig Ballromm Dance Studio, 5470 W. Broad Street. We will pick up right where we left off with Waltz, Tango, Swing, Cha Cha, and Rhumba, and add more technique and styling as well as more patterns for each dance. This course, presented by the Army’s former Chief of Military History, will examine the planning, execution, and significance of the Normandy Invasion that led to the liberation of France and then the defeat of Nazi Germany. Classroom discussions will be strongly reinforced by a Saturday bus trip to the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, VA, at the conclusion of the course.

Fifteen years after the demise of the Soviet Union, we find ourselves with sufficient hindsight to gain a more meaningful understanding of the events which are collectively known as the Cold War. Rather than approaching the Cold War from the traditional perspective of the American crusade against an “evil Empire”, this course will focus on the Cold War as a series of interlocking maneuvers from the perspectives of BOTH the United States and Soviet Union. Students will begin by examining the philsophical foundations of the Cold War, focusing on the manifestation of Marxism-Leninism in the Soviet Union. Students will consider the events of the Cold War from both perspectives, analyze changes in foreign policy, and even postulate on each party’s culpability. Finally, students will consider the shift in diplomatic relations following the Cuban Missile Crisis and conclude with an analysis of the Soviet Union’s demise in 1991.

Exploring Arabic (Spring)

Beginning Chinese

Italian Basics

NEW! This course is intended for students with some knowledge of Arabic. Familiarity with the Arabic writing system and an ability to converse at a basic level (greetings, time, weather, daily life) are prerequisites. Students will deepen their knowledge of grammatical concepts and enhance their crosscultural understanding while improving their ability to read, write, comprehend, and speak Arabic. China is one of the fastest economic growth countries in the world. Its business opportunities and culture have attracted people from all over the world. If you want to understand China first hand, you need to know Mandarin Chinese, the official language of China. This course is designed for beginner adult students who are interested in learning Mandarin (Simplified) Chinese. The course focuses on spoken Chinese, with the assistance of Pinyin, an Englishalphabet-like pronunciation tool. The class includes Chinese grammar for students to understand basic sentence structure and basci reading and writing. This course will also introduce Chinese culture, geography and lifestyle. Awaken the Spanish Within

‘‘ ’’ I believe I speak for the entire class when I say that this course was nothing less than dazzling. I attended hoping to get some good leads on what children’s books to get for my grandchildren, but came away with so much more.

This 12 week Spanish language and cultural adventure is a “Revolution in Learning”, using a system of teaching called Voice Tonality technology, students learn Spanish in a way they will never forget! This system of learning increases language comprehension and retention, by engaging students with a fun, innovative, and comfortable method of learning. Awaken the Spanish Within builds the confidence participants need to start speaking Spanish. NEW! Young adult (YA) fiction has exploded over the past several decades, with an everexpanding readership as well as prolific writing by award-winning authors of young adult literature. J.K. Rowling is perhaps the best known (and most successful) of this group for her “Harry Potter” books, but she is only one of many. This course will explore the world of adolescence and what turns on young readers, as well as many adults who enjoy this genre. You will read and discuss some of the prize-winning YA fiction for young adults, as well as explore the vast resources available for further study. Sports and Games Ice Skating–Basic Skills for Exercise and Beyond

The Richmond Ice Zone’s skating class offers four levels that adults, ages 18 and up, can progress through at their own pace. Classes will teach the basic skills needed to learn to skate for fun and fitness and, if the skater chooses, to pursue figure skating, hockey or speed skating. Skaters will learn how to fall and recover, forward and backward skating skills, stopping and more advanced skills such as crossovers, turning and jumping as the skater is ready. Skaters may wear elbow and/or knee pads, wrist guards and a helmet if they choose. Skate rental is included in tuition cost. Skaters will have a 30 minute lesson followed by a 15 minute practice session. Skaters are also eligible to skate on the Basic Skills Practice Session, Wednesdays from 5 - 5:45pm. Skaters are required to purchase a membership with the US Figure Skating, which includes a Record Book for all levels, Membership Patch, and General Liability Insurance. Poker Mania Poker Mania has been written up in Card Player Magazine (College Edition) and featured in an article on Pokernews.com. It is designed to help bright poker enthusiasts take their games to the next level. Poker is a game of psychology and math. Once these basics have been reviewed, we will combine them to create strategies. The first class will focus on psychology. The first hour will be spent describing the five broad poker personalities, common tells, and other observations that should leave you thinking “now why didn’t I think of that?”. The second hour will be spent playing Texas Hold’em with monopoly money, in which players will randomly draw a personality and play act accordingly. The second class will focus on math, probabilities and odds. Starting hand selection will be analyzed and then the odds of common drawing hands will be calculated. The final class will be a discussion of combining math and psychology to formulate strategies. The class will conclude by playing a variety of poker games, including 7 card stud and Omaha, with frequent stops to discuss how key concepts apply in those games. Culinary Arts Program CORE Tools of the Trade CAP Core. This class is the introductory required course for the Culinary Arts Program but is open to anyone. From spoons to ovens, learn characteristics and the proper use of kitchen and cooking equipment.

Culinary Arts Program

The Culinary Arts Program (CAP) is an exciting hands-on series of food preparation classes designed for home cooks with a variety of experience looking to expand their culinary knowledge. CAP students learn skills and cooking techniques from local food experts. We’ll teach you everything from basic kitchen safety to the preparation of a multi-course meal. Plus you’ll have the opportunity to explore a variety of cuisine and food topics including regional specialties, breads, desserts, ethnic cooking and more. If you’re really serious about cooking, enroll in the CAP Certificate. It’s a 36-hour program that includes four core courses, three electives (topics change each semester), and a Certified Executive Chef Review course. Once you have obtained your CAP Certificate, you’ll be eligible to participate in our advanced Special Series courses. This special series of classes is designed specifically for students who have completed our CAP Certificate and want to continue to learn and expand on their knowledge. Each Special Series will focus on a type of cuisine or food topic and will meet for multiple sessions. Series topics will change each semester so you will always find something new to learn!

Certificate Eligibility and Graduation In order to receive the certificate, you must attend and successfully complete 36 hours of the program. Prior to completing your final class, Certified Executive Chef Review, you will be required to fill out the Graduation Application and pay the $75 fee. After completing the C.E.C. Review, you will be eligible to graduate. A CAP Graduation ceremony will be held to honor students. This reception is open to all graduates, and their family and friends. Graduates will receive their Culinary Arts Program Certificate, their graduation apron and cookbook. The graduation ceremony is held each year in month of June.

This course is an introduction to taiji quan, China’s famous slowmoving, internal martial art. Students learn the basics of Wu Style, one of the five major styles of taiji. Yoga that is designed for any level of student from beginner to advanced. This is an instructional class for the beginning player, or for a player who is returning to the game. The instructor focuses on developing the basics of the game: forehand, backhand, volley and serve. The class has a relaxed pace and uses a variety of drills to enhance footwork, hand-eye coordination, and muscle memory of shots. Scoring is also covered through practice drills of mini-tennis, using speedballs, and progressing to full-court play.

A Place to Take Root: The History of Flowerpots & Garden Containers in North America A Place to Take Root is the first exhibition devoted to the evolution of the common flower pot. Flowerpots today are so taken for granted that little thought is given to how and why they evolved. But the story of the flowerpot is the history of the development of horticulture. Curator Susan Tamulevich visits this history, then leads a tour of the exhibit to discover the history of flowerpots in the United States. Over 120 pots are on display including finely-detailed Italian terracotta, a wood and cast-iron French tree tub, an English horticultureware rhubarb forcer, traditional regional American pots, and the latest in plastic orchid pots and ornamental urns. Course fees will be refunded in full when the Office of Community and Professional Education cancels a course. A participant who wishes a refund must make a request in writing no less than eight days prior to the first class meeting. A 50 percent processing fee will be deducted from the refund.
