Crossed Sabers–Civil War Cavalry in Virginia

America’s First Civil War

It is generally estimated that throughout the course of the Revolutionary War, only one third of the American public consistently supported the cause of independence, another third firmly remained loyal to the British Crown, and the decisive final third tended to support whichever army was currently camped out in their neighborhood. Nowhere was this division of opinion more violenty played out than in the Southern colonies. This class will examine the origins and outcomes of the tensions between families, neighbors, economic and social classes, races, religions, and nationalities that plagued the South through almost nine years of continuous warfare. 3/2-4/6 HIS211.07

TENTATIVE TRIPS ABROAD:

Morocco during Spring Break

Travel dates: Friday, March 4, 2011 - Sunday, March 13 (leaving Casablanca on March 12) You will get an impression of the Kingdom on the northeastern corner of the African continent, a country with an extremely rich cultural heritage and many diverse influences. The indigenous Berber tribes of the region have maintained their identity during centuries of Arab-Islamic influence and have had a deep impact on all venues of life, up to the Arabic language spoken in Morocco. The cultural wealth is reflected in the cities of the country, some of which we will visit, their names household terms in western culture, be it Casablanca (al Dar al Bayda’), Tangiers, Rabat, Marrakech. Learn about the rich history and culture of the country, enjoy the traditional markets and the picturesque old cities, and savor the world-famous tajines and couscous dishes in the homeland of saffron. Culinary Italy

October 2011 Well known for its culinary arts, Italy is a food-lovers “paradise.” From the open air markets and specialty shops of Rome to the vineyards and olive groves of Umbria, this trip will explore the culinary roots of Italy. From visits to vineyards and olive oil producers, you’ll meet winemakers, bakers and chefs, and have an opportunity to sample of their rich bounty. We’ll visit bakeries, gelato shops and butchers as well as take in the café culture. We’ll eat some of the hundreds of different shapes of pasta Italy has to offer and have a chance to get in the kitchen as well. The Slow Food movement started in Italy nearly 25 years ago and its legacy continues today in cities as well as the fertile countryside and small towns of Umbria. Between meals we’ll spend a good bit of time visiting some of the artistic highlights of Rome and the towns of Umbria. The first part of the trip will be spent in Rome exploring the rich traditions and history of “The Eternal City.” The group will visit important historic sites using the city as our classroom. The second half of the trip will take us to the fertile Umbria region of Italy, just a few hours northwest of Rome. Using the walled city of Todi as a base, we will visit small towns, vineyards and food producers. The trip will be led by John Haddad, a local food writer for Style Weekly and Flavor Magazine and is the Vice Chair of Slow Food RVA, a chapter of the Italian based organization focused on local and sustainable food. 2011 Summer Reading Programs Phonics • Comprehension • Fluency • Love of Reading

Five Different Programs for 4-Year-Olds through Entering 5th Graders. These programs teach the essential phonics and comprehension skills required to become a fluent reader. Our students also learn the wordattack skills needed for multisyllable words, as well as the advanced comprehension skills required for textbooks and literature. Mastery of these skills will make reading much easier and more enjoyable, and will greatly increase your child’s confidence in school.

Comprehension • Speed Reading • Study Skills

Programs for Entering 6th-8th and Entering 9th-11th Graders. Our average student improves reading comprehension one to two grade levels while more than doubling reading speed. Students can learn the best way to improve vocabulary, study textbooks, take notes, and prepare for tests. Learning these skills will make it easier to complete assignments quickly and get better grades, and will help your child become a successful, motivated student.

Speed Reading for Work, School, and Recreation

For Adults, College Students, and Entering High School Seniors. Our adult speed reading program may help you read three to four times faster in novels, newspapers, and most business and school materials. In more difficult reading, such as academic and professional journals or college textbooks, you can learn to read two to three times faster. In addition, you’ll learn comprehension, concentration, and retention techniques, enabling you to remember more, while reading much faster. As a special bonus, you will receive a lifetime instruction privilege which allows you to repeat the program at any time–for free!
