At the University of Richmond School of Continuing Studies, we’ve put together a wide selection of non-credit courses for a mini summer session that begins May 1 and runs through the end of July. Here’s a quick look. Landscape Design. We’re offering several landscape design courses this summer. Of special note are two, half-day seminars focused on owning and operating a landscape design business. Registration for some courses is limited to those enrolled in a certificate program. Please check course descriptions for details.

Landscape Design Woody Landscape Plants for Summer Landscape Design courses are part of our Landscape Design Certificate Program and enrollment may be limited to students admitted to this program. For admission requirements and procedures, please check our website.

Students learn identification characteristics and design applications of approximately 60 seasonal trees, shrubs, vines and flowering plants through lectures and field study. The instructor focuses on the aesthetic, functional and cultural aspects of each plant. Specific topics are discussed as they relate to the season. This course will include a field lecture on choosing and purchasing seasonal plants from a nursery. Prerequisite: Introduction to Plants.

Landscape Graphics In this introductory studio course, students learn to use drafting equipment and develop graphic and sketching skills. Coursework includes landscape plans, section, eleva-

tion and axonometric drawings, and an introduction in the use of color media. Materials and equipment purchased for this class are used in all studio courses. History of Garden Design This course presents the major traditions in landscape design history through a series of slide-illustrated lectures. Session II: The Constitution and The War on Terrorism: The Tension Between Security and Liberty This interactive session will explore constitutional issues germane to War and Peace in the specific content of the modern war on terrorism. Terrorist groups often seek to exploit America’s open society and commitment to civil liberties as a strategy for accomplishing terrorist activities. How should our society strike the balance between security and liberty in the context of the War on Terrorism? What constitutional principles should inform and guide our struggle with this question? Session III: The President and The Supreme Court: The Delicate Balance of Power The President of the United States is arguably the single most powerful leader of any democratic society in the world. The Supreme Court of the United States is arguably the single most influential “constitutional court” in any democratic society in the world. What is the relationship between the executive and judicial branches of government in our system, and most importantly, how do the powers of the President intersect with the powers of the Supreme Court? To what extent does the President act as a “check and balance” on the Court, and to what extent does the Court act as a “check and balance on the President?” This interactive session will examine the constitutional text, history, and actions of the President and the Supreme Court in an exploration of the critical elements of the “delicate balance” that is vital to our constitutional system. Office Management for the Small Design Firm This course will help you develop a sense of control and confidence in managing your own landscape design business. Site Analysis This course is designed to train students how to investigate natural and cultural data of a design site. History of the Christian Church Part I This course will introduce the history of the Christian Church. Massage Therapy Put your stress in our hands! Receive personal benefits from a professional certified Massage Therapist with three hours of massage. You receive a total of three hours of massage time to be scheduled in full-hour or half-hour sessions. These programs teach the essential phonics and comprehension skills required to become a fluent reader. Our students also learn the word-attack skills needed for multisyllable words, as well as the advanced comprehension skills required for textbooks and literature. Mastery of these skills will make reading much easier and more enjoyable, and will greatly increase your child's confidence in school.

Comprehension • Speed Reading • Study Skills Programs for Entering 6th-8th and Entering 9th-11th Graders. Our average student improves reading comprehension one to two grade levels while more than doubling reading speed. Students can learn the best way to improve vocabulary, study textbooks, take notes, and prepare for tests. Learning these skills will make it easier to complete assignments quickly and get better grades, and will help your child become a successful, motivated student.

Speed Reading for Work, School, and Recreation For Adults, College Students, and Entering High School Seniors. Our adult speed reading program may help you read three to four times faster in novels, newspapers, and most business and school materials. In more difficult reading, such as academic and professional journals or college textbooks, you can learn to read two to three times faster. In addition, you’ll learn comprehension, concentration, and retention techniques, enabling you to remember more, while reading much faster. As a special bonus, you will receive a lifetime instruction privilege which allows you to repeat the program at any time—for free! Fitness Instructional Programs Aqua Aerobics Movement with music in the water best describes this course that develops the whole body. Strength, endurance and flexibility are developed in routine-like patterns choreographed to lively music. This cardiovascular workout includes resistance and strength training as well as deep-water exercises to build stamina. Pilates Pilates is an excellent form of exercise that develops core strength, lengthens muscle and assists with posture stability, balance and coordination. It also heightens mindbody awareness. Pilates focuses on a sequence of exercises that incorporates both flexion (abdominals) and extension (erectors and gluteal) of the spine. Exercises are done on the floor on mats. Tennis Beginning Adult. This course focuses on the fundamentals of tennis. The instructor teaches the history, rules and scoring of tennis, as well as an explanation of what “love” means to a tennis player. Developing ground strokes, volley technique and serve is incorporated in the instruction. Footwork drills and “mini-tennis” games are included for variety. One classroom session is included in the course. No experience is necessary. This course is designed for players with a good understanding of the fundamentals, but who are lacking the consistency to take them to the next level. This class is great for those interested in singles and doubles.

Experience Life as a Latino This Summer! The best way to learn a language is to immerse yourself in the culture. Attend our Immersion School in Zacatecas, Mexico August 1–15, 2005. You will be partnered with a Spanish buddy who works in the same industry as you in Zacatecas for the two weeks. For example, police officers attending will be partnered with a police officer in Zacatecas, participants in the banking industry will be partnered with a banker in Zacatecas, or a restaurant owner will be partnered with another restaurant owner in the town. This course is designed for the serious recreational player with a ranking of 3.0-3.5. The class focuses on a variety of drills aimed at stepping up the power and placement of shots. The instructor also introduces specialty shots: drop-shot, slice, and topspin lobs to your game. The first hour focuses on instructional drills and the last half-hour includes singles and doubles play. Friday classes include one hour of fast-paced drills designed to increase reaction time and improve footwork on all strokes. One classroom session is included in the course. Yoga on the Ball This course is a blending of Yoga and Pilates using the Swiss Balance Ball to align the body, build long, lean muscles, and develop core abdominal strength. The class integrates the mind and body connection with the use of breathing and relaxation techniques. Exercises are safe enough for those with chronic pain and intense enough for the seasoned athlete. The balance ball is a very pleasurable and relaxing stretching aid that helps prevent injuries while reviving tight, tired muscles. Yoga: Multi-Level Most Yoga classes have students with various levels of Yoga backgrounds, limitations and imbalances. These differences are due to previous injuries, musculature, structural differences and compression factors. Differences are addressed for each individual so that they can benefit the most from their Yoga practice. Modifications and props are used when necessary to get the best range of movement. The participants gain a more accurate awareness of their body differences and how their body responds to each posture. No experience necessary.

Your Personal Trainer Get a jump-start on your workout program with fitness professionals! Receive an individual body fat assessment, plus five hours of personal time with a certified personal trainer. An exercise physiologist facilitates the class, with outside help from certified personal trainers. Class one includes important instruction, paperwork and your body fat assessment. Please do not exercise during the 24 hours prior to the first class meeting! The five personal training sessions are scheduled directly with your personal trainer. All activities take place on the University of Richmond campus.
