Art Beginning Knitting
Join this amazing course and learn the timeless craft of knitting. Knitting has once again become the newest and hippest pastime. Learn how to cast on, the difference between a knit and a purl stitch, and how to bind off - all the basics! Create fun scarves that make wonderful gifts for yourself, family and friends. Beyond Knitting and Purling
Are you ready to increase your knitting skills? Move on to the next level after learning the basics of knitting. Learn how to increase and decrease, the cable stitch, yarn overs, pattern reading, and all the skills to become a complete knitter. For the class project you will make four squares using the new skills learned in class. These squares can be used to start an afghan or to make pillow tops. Chain Maille - Byzantine Segment Bracelet
NEW! Learn the fundamentals of interlocking jump rings to make a bracelet. This class will focus on the versatile Byzantine chain weave. Once mastered, explore various ways to use the Byzantine segments to create beautiful jewelry! By the end of the class, you will be wearing a beautiful sterling silver bracelet that you created. Introduction to Precious Metal Clay
NEW! Make your own fine silver jewelry in this fun and unique class. Precious Metal Clay is a versatile, easy-to-use material that allows anyone to make their own beautiful, real silver jewelry in a matter of hours. PMC is a clay-like material that contains actual silver powder and a non-toxic binding material. Explore ways to mold, texture and layer the PMC to produce 2 - 3 pendants and/or earrings. Once the PMC is kiln fired, a .999 percent silver piece is produced. Learn various finishing techniques including tumbling, patinas, and simple burnishing. Pharmacy Technician Program
NEW! This comprehensive 50-hour course will prepare you to enter the pharmacy field and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB exam. Technicians work in hospitals, home infusion pharmacies, community pharmacies and other health care settings - working under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. Study medical terminology specific to the pharmacy, read and interpret prescriptions and define drugs by generic and brand names. Learn dosage calculations, I.V. flow rates, drug compounding, dose conversions, dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control, and billing and reimbursement. Certified Wedding Planner
This 40 hour course explores planning, coordinating and directing weddings as well as a study of business structure, documentation information, contracts, how to work with vendors, marketing and how to work with prospective brides and grooms. Physical Therapy Aide Program
NEW! This comprehensive 50-hour Physical Therapy Aide Program prepares you for the growing field of Physical Therapy. The Physical Therapy Aide is generally responsible for carrying out the non-technical duties of physical therapy, such as preparing treatment areas, ordering devices and supplies, and transporting patients working under the direction of the physical therapist. These workers assist physical therapists in providing services that help improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities of patients suffering from injuries or diseases. Physical Therapy Aides may be employed in nursing homes, hospitals, sports rehabilitation centers, and some orthopedic clinics. Course fee includes all textbooks and materials. Ballroom Dance Teachers Academy
NEW! The Ballroom Dance Teachers Academy is a formal vocational program that offers professional training to aspiring ballroom dance teachers. We will train you to become a dance teacher, prepare you for professional certification exams, and teach you how to maximize your career in the ballroom dance world. Teaching ballroom dance is a career option for anyone - no prior dance experience is required. In this course you will learn how to dance as both Leader and Follower, technical elements of all dances, musical elements of all dances, how to teach private and group classes, and how to prepare for national certification. The entire 16-month program covers the 17 dances of the DVIDA (Dance Vision) syllabus for Smooth, Rhythm and Nightclub dances. The program is divided into four quarters which can be taken in any order. The current quarter being offered this summer is Rhythm II (Mambo, Meregue, Samba and West Coast Swing). You do NOT need to complete the Rhythm I quarter prior to enrolling in Rhythm II. Requirements: Students must purchase dance shoes prior to the second class. Students enrolled in the class receive a 10% discount if they purchase shoes from Simply Ballroom. Students must purchase the Trainee Binder from the instructor on the first night of class ($75). Voice-overs are hot today! You don’t have to be an actor to get voice-over work. With notable talents such as James Earl Jones, Linda Hunt and Donald Sutherland lending their voices to commercials, films and videos, one would think it would be next to impossible to break into this field…not so! You’ll learn about an exciting new way to get around the competition and actually turn voice-overs into a thriving full or parttime business! Our instructor will discuss the voice-over business as a whole, the numerous opportunities, the incredible income potential, and the all-important demo and how to have it produced. You’ll step up to the microphone and do some practice recording, and best of all, you’ll hear the results!
Basic Care and Nurture of Your Volunteers
NEW! Volunteer organizations come in all types and sizes - church groups, PTAs, Scouts, sports and music boosters, special interest clubs, and so many more. The volunteers charged with keeping these groups running also come in all shapes and sizes with all levels of experience and skill. If you want to feel more comfortable as a leader of volunteers, this is the place to learn many tips on topics pertinent to your task: getting organized, recruiting, training and motivating volunteers, running effective meetings, fundraising, special events, and how to survive your tenure without pulling your hair out!
This 60-hour course provides a solid foundation in individual income tax preparation, enabling you to complete all of the standard returns. There are no entrance requirements. With this knowledge, you can earn extra money as a tax professional. Learn the majority of tax forms needed to fill out tax returns for yourself and the general public. Acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to complete federal income tax returns and research tax issues. Because “practice makes perfect”, the course requires at least two tax returns prepared for most lessons, one of which will be done as a class project and one of which will be completed individually and submitted to your instructor. The course will also include information and exercises on interview techniques.
Fundamentals of Real Estate Investing
This course will interest anyone who wishes to invest in income-producing property and wants a basic understanding of the skills required to become a successful real estate investor. Topics include property selection, goal setting, how to read credit reports, tenant selection, sources of income, and why choosing real estate is a smart investment choice. There will also be an in-depth analysis of tax-free exchanges and discussions of various internet sites. Handouts will include sample leases, applications, premise reports and examples of proper record keeping.
CLA / CP Exam Prep Course
NEW! This in-depth prep course for the CLA / CP Examination is taught over three consecutive Saturdays. The National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) offers a voluntary, two-day comprehensive examination, based on federal law and procedure, to measure a paralegal’s legal knowledge. Successful completion of the exam earns a paralegal the CLA (Certified Legal Assistant) or CP (Certified Paralegal) national credential. This 3-day intensive CLA / CP Review Course offers a review of the basic knowledge area of the exam, tips for preparing the exam, organizing study groups, and test taking strategies. Examination subjects include: Communications, Ethics, Legal Research, Judgment and Analytical Ability, and Substantive Law. The Substantive Law section consistes of five mini-examinations covering the American Legal System and four of the following areas as selected by examinees: Administrative Law, Bankruptcy, Business Organizations/ Corporations, Contracts, Family Law, Criminal Law and Procedure, Litigation, Probate and Estate Planning, and Real Estate. Culinary Arts Program
The Culinary Arts Program (CAP) is an exciting hands-on series of food preparation classes designed for home cooks with a variety of experience looking to expand their culinary knowledge. CAP students learn skills and cooking techniques from local food experts. We’ll teach you everything from basic kitchen safety to the preparation of a multicourse meal. Plus you’ll have the opportunity to explore a variety of cuisine and food topics including regional specialties, breads, desserts, ethnic cooking and more. If you’re really serious about cooking, enroll in the CAP Certificate. It’s a 42-hour program that includes five core courses, three electives (topics change each semester), and a Certified Executive Chef Review course. Once you have obtained your CAP Certificate, you’ll be eligible to participate in our Advanced Special Series. This special series of classes is designed specifically for students who have completed our CAP Certificate and want to continue to learn and expand their knowledge. Each Special Series will focus on a type of cuisine or food topic and will meet for multiple sessions. Series topics will change each semester so you will always find something new to learn!
This course, designed as a continuation of Tools of the Trade, allows you to gain further hands-on experience with cooking equipment and to work toward a greater understanding of basic, buildingblock cooking techniques such as broiling, emulsifying and poaching. Certificate Eligibility and Graduation
In order to receive the certificate, you must attend and successfully complete 42 hours of the program. Prior to completing your final class, Certified Executive Chef Review, you will be required to fill out the Graduation Application and pay the $75 fee. After completing the C.E.C. Review, you will be eligible to graduate. A CAP Graduation ceremony will be held to honor students. This reception is open to all graduates, and their family and friends. Graduates receive a Culinary Arts Program Certificate, apron and cookbook. The ceremony is held each year in month of June.

An Italian Gastronomic Adventure with Chef Glen Pruden November 6 – 13, 2008 The first three nights of this seven-night trip will be based in Bologna, the food capital of Italy. This university town is rich in history and tradition, as well as many scenic markets and excellent restaurants. Visit the Civic Museum for Ancient Art, and the new Modern Museum of Art “MAMbo”. A walking tour of Bologna and tours to Parma and Modena will also be available. Two cooking classes will be included with visits to local markets and the chance to enjoy all you have prepared. Ballroom Dance Teachers Academy
NEW! The Ballroom Dance Teachers Academy is a formal vocational program that offers professional training to aspiring ballroom dance teachers. We will train you to become a dance teacher, prepare you for professional certification exams, and teach you how to maximize your career in the ballroom dance world. Teaching ballroom dance is a career option for anyone - no prior dance experience is required. In this course you will learn how to dance as both Leader and Follower, technical elements of all dances, musical elements of all dances, how to teach private and group classes, and how to prepare for national certification. The entire 16-month program covers the 17 dances of DVIDA (Dance Vision) syllabus for Smooth, Rhythm and Nightclub dances. The program is divided into four quarters which can be taken in any order. The current quarter being offered this summer is Rhythm II (Mambo, Meregue, Samba and West Coast Swing). You do NOT have to complete the Rhythm I quarter prior to enrolling in Rhythm II. Requirements: Students must purchase dance shoes prior to the second class. Students enrolled in the class receive a 10% discount if they purchase shoes from Simply Ballroom. Film Hollywood Movies Made in Virginia
Learn the history of Hollywood movies and TV shows made in Virginia over the last quarter of a century in a classroom powerpoint presentation. Following the presentation, board a motor coach to enjoy a two-hour movie tour and see historic Richmond through the lens of Hollywood’s eyes. This entertaining and educational course is part of the Virginia Film Tour Program. It is filled with fascinating behind-the-scenes stories about the making of movies. History The Best of Banned Books in Religion
NEW! Examine why and how books get banned for their religious content. Explore the cultural, social, legal and religious context in which the bans have taken place. Discuss the role of censorship in society and the countervailing principles of the First Amendment. Explore the reasons for banning books such as the Bible, and books not included in the Bible like the Gospel of Thomas and the Gospel of Mary. Other books examined include the Qur’an and the Analects of Confucious, Darwin’s Origin of the Species, The Last Temptation of Christ by Kazantzakis, some of the Harry Potter series, and Galileo’s Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems. Discuss and debate the specific purposes of banning the above books and the arguments for not banning them. Legal, ethical and moral issues of book banning will also be explored. There is no textbook for the class, although students may wish to purchase some of the books examined. Richmond History
This course is an around-the-bend approach to some of the city’s secrets. Expect a mix of historical and visual experiences not found in the typical tourist books. Learn how the streets of Richmond got their name. Discover the where and why of lesser-known monuments and hear the story of Richmond’s involvement in the feud over the reinterment of George Washington’s body. Find out how copies of Houdon’s famous statue of our first president, that has stood in the Capitol for over 200 years, found its way to other foreign and domestic cities. Gain knowledge of the many controversies caused by the arts section of FDR’s Work Project Administration (WPA). Richmond was the center of tumult during the placement of two murals, completed with 25 others for Virginia post offices. Take a different view of the murals, museums, fences, and cornerstones in this city. Find new places to visit and new things to do!
Two American Civil War Heroes: Lives That Counted
NEW! Many fascinating personal stories came out of our American Civil War, but none more interesting than the saga of two young men, one from Maine, and the other from Georgia. While neither had been trained as a soldier, they both volunteered to serve. Each was a heroic battlefield leader, who suffered serious wounds, and survived to rise to great heights during and after the Civil War. This short course (2 lectures) will focus upon the extraordinary accomplishments of Generals Joshua L. Chamberlain of Maine and John B. Gordon of Georgia. Their stories are amazing not only because of who they were and what they accomplished, but by their almost mystical connections as 19th century American heroes. Landscape Design Professional Certificate Curriculum Woody Landscape Plants Core
This curriculum consists of five courses that can be taken in any sequence. Completion of the Woody Plants Core is one step in the process of receiving the Landscape Design Professional Certificate. Students study approximately 300 plants suitable for the growing environment in the Mid-Atlantic region during various seasons. Field study sessions are scheduled at local gardens and nurseries and are supplemented by lectures on horticulture, nursery and planting standards. Some students choose to complete only the Woody Plants Core curriculum. This option is ideal for landscape professionals and horticulture staff seeking to improve knowledge and proficiency in the industry. Children’s Technology Workshop icamp™
Children’s Technology Workshop icamp provides children in grades 2 - 8 with the chance to author their own day camp experience. Children complete applied-technology adventures that are customized to their skill level. Activities occur both on and off the computer with a focus on engineering and robotics, video game creation, animation, and graphic design. During the first activity at camp, children will select 3 - 6 adventure projects that they will complete during their week-long session. Students can choose from among 10 theme-based adventures: Animation Alive; Expedition Egypt; Fashion Designer; Mission to Mars; Medieval; Architect; Olympics; Team F1 Racing; Rescue; and Gamemaker Guru (grades 4 - 8 only). Our highly trained adventure guides help children to select programs that suit their age, area of interest, and skill level to maximize the fun and thrill of success. Student-teacher ratio is 7 to 1. Students can choose to attend a half-day or full-day camp. If attending for half-day, students should bring a snack and drink. If attending for the full-day camp, students should bring snacks, drinks and a bag lunch. Cancellation and Refund Policy
The Office of Community and Professional Education reserves the right to cancel any class or make any other changes it deems necessary. Course fees will be refunded in full when the Office of Community and Professional Education cancels a course. We recognize you may occasionally need to cancel your registration. If you wish to receive a refund, we must receive your written request for cancellation no less than five business days prior to the class start date. A 50% processing fee will be deducted from the refund. We regret that we cannot provide a refund if we receive your written cancellation in four or fewer business days before the class start date. However, we will issue a gift certificate in the amount of the class fee for future registration. Please note that your refund may take several weeks to process.

Continuing Education Units
Some courses in this catalog qualify for CEUs (Continuing Education Units). CEUs are a way of measuring and officially recognizing the time and effort you have put into your education for your job or profession. As you update your credentials, are in line for a transfer, promotion or evaluation of your current position, or want to make a vocational change or explore a new career, the CEUs demonstrate the time, energy and interest you have shown in broadening your horizons.
