Breakfast With The Constitution Presenter: Rodney Smolla, Dean, T. C. Williams School of Law University of Richmond 7:30 a.m. : Breakfast Buffet opens 8-9:30 a.m.: Session

This interactive session will explore the constitutional principles that govern decisions in our society relating to war and peace. The Constitution grants to Congress the power “to declare war,” and to pass laws regulating the armed forces. Congress also has the power of the purse, with ultimate authority to fund or not fund military operations. The Constitution also designates the President as Commander-in-Chief. What is the appropriate division of authority between the executive and legislative branches? What role, if any, should courts play in striking this balance? What insights and lessons may we draw from history and current events? Tuesday, Apr. 19 CRN: 80480 Fee: $50

Session II: The Constitution and The War on Terrorism: The Tension Between Security and Liberty

Session III: The President and The Supreme Court: The Delicate Balance of Power

This interactive session will explore constitutional issues germane to War and Peace in the specific content of the modern war on terrorism. Terrorist groups often seek to exploit America’s open society and commitment to civil liberties as a strategy for accomplishing terrorist activities. How should our society strike the balance between security and liberty in the context of the War on Terrorism? What constitutional principles should inform and guide our struggle with this question?

The President of the United States is arguably the single most powerful leader of any democratic society in the world. The Supreme Court of the United States is arguably the single most influential “constitutional court” in any democratic society in the world. What is the relationship between the executive and judicial branches of government in our system, and most importantly, how do the powers of the President intersect with the powers of the Supreme Court? To what extent does the President act as a “check and balance” on the Court, and to what extent does the Court act as a “check and balance on the President?” This interactive session will examine the constitutional text, history, and actions of the President and the Supreme Court in an exploration of the critical elements of the “delicate balance” that is vital to our constitutional system.

Summer Grillin’

Wine & Food Pairing for the Chef

Sign up early as this class has sold out for the last three years. Gather around the grill for three nights as Chef Glenn demonstrates grilling techniques using fresh herbs, dry rubs, and marinades. Chicken and pork will be used the first week, beef and lamb the second week, fresh seafood and vegetables the third. In addition to sampling meals, students will receive beer samples and handouts of recipes. Individuals must be 21 years of age to enroll in this class. This class meets in an outdoor grilling area designed by Classic Kitchens of Virginia, Inc. (Elective equivalent of 3 hours)

This course begins with a lecture on food and wine flavor dynamics and a lesson on using professional wine-tasting technique to analyze any wine’s bouquet, body, sweetness, tartness, complexity and flavor. About 45 minutes later it becomes a mix-’n-match meal of seven wines and a dozen foods during which we discuss (from the perspective of the chef) how tastes, aromas, flavors, textures, temperature, color and grape variety affect the way foods and wines complement one another—or not! While sampling over a dozen food and wine pairings, we’ll discuss why several classic—and some unexpected—food-and-wine pairings work and why some popular tips yield unpleasant results. By the evening’s end we’ll replace vague, inconsistent notions with concrete, reliable principles. Students must be 21 years of age to register and attend course. This course is taught at Willow Oaks Country Club. (Elective)

In no time, you will be able to jazz up your everyday to something quite special. (Elective)

NEW!

Do you know how to read a wine label? How is wine made? What makes it great instead of merely good? Are you confident pairing wine with food? This course covers all this plus buying, storing, and serving wines. As you are guided through a tasting of six wines in each class, you’ll learn sensory evaluation—a professional tasting technique to grasp and articulate the balance, style, and overall quality of any wine. Learn how and where to find value and which books and magazines to read. Lectures complemented by PowerPoint slides and a food-andwine pairing each class. Students must be 21 years of age to register for and attend course. (Elective equivalent of 3 hours)

Yoga: Vinyasa Flow II

This course is a blending of Yoga and Pilates using the Swiss Balance Ball to align the body, build long, lean muscles, and develop core abdominal strength. The class integrates the mind and body connection with the use of breathing and relaxation techniques. Exercises are safe enough for those with chronic pain and intense enough for the seasoned athlete. The balance ball is a very pleasurable and relaxing stretching aid that helps prevent injuries while reviving tight, tired muscles.

This class is a continuation and extension of the Yoga Vinyasa I class. With a full two hours in which to explore all the poses, the student is able to gain more mastery and strength as well as approach the truly meditative state where breath, bandhas and dristis all merge. A firm grounding in the basics of Yoga Vinyasa is necessary before attempting this challenging class.

Starting in the 1860s Manet, Renoir, NEW! Monet, Degas and van Gogh began experimenting with light and color in an effort to make their art come alive. Those experiments gave birth to Impressionism, one of the most celebrated and recognizable art forms. Join us as we explore the lives and work of these gifted artists in the world famous collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC! We’ll be led by Dr. Ken Orosz of the University of Maine, who will give us a background presentation on the bus. He’ll set the background for this ‘revolution’ in art, and explain why these artists were frequently vilified during their lives. On arrival at the museum, Dr. Orosz will lead us personally through the exhibit, one of the largest, finest and most comprehensive in the world. We’ll look at specific works of art and learn something of the lives of the artists as well as their technique. As a special bonus, our visit has been specially timed to coincide with a special exhibit devoted to the works of the often overlooked impressionist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Afterward there will be time to explore other parts of the museum, the restaurant or the gift shops before our return to the University.

Introduction to the Essentials of Rock and Roll-1954-1977 Prior to July 5, 1954, American popular music was a benign melange of NEW! genres including country, rhythm and blues and pop. Then came the Big Bang of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley’s recording of “ That’s All Right, Mama. “ It’s been 50 years since his seismic explosion into mass consciousness and the universe of popular culture has never been the same. How did this music that first gave young people an identity and culture separate from their parents come to have such a global impact? Jeff McKee will trace the conception, birth and awkward growth spurts of the art form that was created in equal parts by an almost accidental cross pollination of cultures and a premeditated exploitation of teenage joy and angst. Along the way we’ll meet the forgotten forefathers, one hit wonders and superstars of the first 25 years of Rock and Roll. We’ll see how different styles of music such as Blues, Folk, Garage Band, Psychedelic and what is called the Singer-songwriter period all got mixed into the melting pot of Rock and Roll. We’ll discuss the essential Rock and Roll singles, albums, movies, album cover art and we’ll have special features on the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. This class will be an interactive, multimedia opportunity for all ages to learn and experience the joy of this music that changed the world. The University of Richmond School of Continuing Studies has partnered with Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden to offer a series of courses for the home gardener and those with a general interest in plants and flowers. All courses and seminars are offered at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, 1800 Lakeside Avenue, Richmond, VA.

Tree Basics for Homeowners

Beginning Bird Watching

Geared to most any gardening level, this class will teach you more about trees and their natural communities; lessons learned from last year’s spate of severe storms about caring for trees near power lines and homes; and will examine some of the best species for home landscapes. In a Garden walk following the opening lectures, LGBG horticulturist John Wise will identify trees that will grow well in our area, are suitable for residential situations, and discuss where and how to place them in the landscape. Bring your notebook and come away with a new wish list!

In these four 1 1/2-hour sessions with writer Jerry Uhlman, learn when, where, and how to spot birds most anywhere. If you enjoy the outdoors and want to learn more about finding, observing, and identifying birds, this course is for you. Though primarily aimed at beginners, it can also be a refresher course for those who have had some experience. The two late afternoon classes will be devoted mainly to learning the local birds, including songs and calls, as well as visual marks. Some time will also be spent discussing field guides, binoculars, organizations, and where to go birding around Richmond. The morning sessions will be spent in the Garden applying knowledge from the earlier session.
