FY 2019-2020 ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Friends, Looking back, 2020 evokes lots of feelings for many of us. No one could have predicted being faced with a global pandemic and its aftermath – yet we remain amazed as we reflect on what God enabled us to do in providing help to so many in crisis. This year’s annual report is a combination of looking back and looking forward. It comes in the form of a calendar we hope you will reference and find joy in each day in 2022. It reflects the unprecedented scope of our Western Pennsylvania Division’s work in shining a light of hope in the darkness, including a collection of personal stories highlighting our impact across the region. As a team of officers, staff, volunteers, and donors, we worked shoulder-to-shoulder on the frontlines of Mission Hope in 2020. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for your dedication and faith during this year of all years. When there were no options left for those facing sudden unemployment, a job risk due to closed schools and childcare centers, illness, and more, The Salvation Army Western PA Division was there to provide help and hope. YOUR side-by-side support with us made this mission possible for thousands of Western Pennsylvanians. When the cupboards were bare and the fridge was empty for local families, we were on a mission to provide hope. When a single mom lost her job because the pandemic took away her only options for childcare, we were on a mission to inspire hope. With long lines of families waiting for emergency boxes of food to feed their children and loved ones, we were on a mission to create hope. Throughout these pages, you will hear directly from those we served through this most important of missions – Mission Hope. It was made clear time and again that fulfilling our mission in 2020 was only possible – with God’s provision. We thank you for your ongoing support and wish you the deepest blessings in 2022 and beyond. Sincerely,

Majors Gregory and joyce hartshorn Divisional Leaders the Salvation Army Western Pennsylvania division

Building Hope, Healing Wounds: LIGHT Project The Salvation Army’s “Leading Individuals Gracefully Out of Human Trafficking” works to heal the physical, emotional, and spiritual wounds victims confront while breaking free of this modern-day slavery. This program is based at The Salvation Army New Kensington Worship and Service Center. Victims receive comprehensive case management services, with support in securing housing, clothing, furniture, and the emotional, moral, and spiritual support they need on this journey forward in healing.

When I met with Sarah (Medina, LIGHT Project Director), she told me The Salvation Army was ready to do everything possible to support me - they were like a family to me. I was a single mom experiencing many problems with the father of my child. My English was not so good, and I was living alone with a little baby. I didn’t have a car, I didn’t work, and I didn’t have friends or family here. The Salvation Army assisted me with housing, covering my rent for several months. Sarah went above and beyond, assisting me with other personal matters, and I’m very grateful to The Salvation Army for their care and support.” -LIGHT Project Client

Without a doubt, the biggest blessing that The Salvation Army gave my family was each other,” Josh said. “Thanks to The Salvation Army, for the first time in a long time, I didn’t have to worry about what, or if, I was going to eat. My father received helpful resources for housing, allowing us to remain the strong siblings we are today.”

Hope Springs: Our Generous Donors

John Bu tler

The Salvation Army’s donors provided a lifeline to families and individuals facing the impossible – the aftermath of a global pandemic and economic shutdown. Our donors turned Mission Impossible into Mission Hope with their ongoing generosity and commitment during this public health and economic crisis.

I was likely 7 or 8 years old in the early 1960s when my parents joined The Salvation Army New Kensington. My first memories are being introduced to and learning to play the Alto horn. My lasting memories, as a young kid, were the good feelings derived from helping others while being part of an organization that specialized in helping people in need. My donor advisor alerted me to the plans envisioned for the New Kensington facility to have an even greater community outreach. After visiting and learning more, I viewed it as my opportunity and duty to make a larger, long-term financial commitment to promote that vision. This ultimately benefits my former hometown community.” -John Butler, Major Gifts Donor

The Salvation Army has always been known as an organization that helps people with various personal, social, economic and emergency needs. During the pandemic, the organization stepped it up to an even higher level of service in terms of meeting the increased needs of people during this time of uncertainty.” -Kevin & Pamela Kuhn, Planned Giving Donors

Heroes of Hope: Celebrating National Salvation Army Week Our volunteers provide the support we need in Doing The Most Good in communities across Western Pennsylvania. During National Salvation Army Week, we are humbled to celebrate our Heroes of Hope!

Bill Morgan fed the poverty-stricken during the height of the pandemic, transporting meals from Sharon to the New Castle Salvation Army. He cooked a full Thanksgiving dinner for 155 people for pick-up and delivery, then collected thousands of Christmas toys for local children in need, donating his own money for gift cards and Christmas food baskets. God bless you, Bill!” -Captain Elliott Higgins, Commanding Officer, The Salvation Army New Castle Worship and Service Center

Sonya Richard, a volunteer at The Salvation Army Somerset Service Center, has been instrumental in using her creativity and boundless energy to support programs throughout the year. Although she works a full-time job overnight, she dedicated her free time to help families during Christmas, allowing the Somerset Service Center to continue its programs to bring happiness during the holidays.” -Gale Purbaugh, Director, The Salvation Army Somerset Service Center

Hope’s Future: Youth Programs | How We Adapted The Salvation Army provides enrichment programming and critical services for youth across Western PA, building solid foundations for happy, healthy, and successful futures. While 2020 created obstacles for in-person engagement for our new Greater Pittsburgh Music School, Divisional Music Programs, Youth Programs, and Camp, we adapted to serve at-risk youth and children across our communities in new ways.

When I first got to Pittsburgh, I was not making the best decisions in my life. I was hanging out with the wrong people, and I was not in a good mindset. Lts. Kevilyn and Michael Haynes treated me like a daughter, and they tried to involve me and my family in everything going on here, and it made me feel good inside. They are always willing to talk, always willing to go out of their way to keep me motivated.” -Lilly, 15 years old

Hope’s Future: Youth Programs | Back-to-School Assistance The Salvation Army ensures that young students are prepared with supplies and support for every school year. As COVID closed schools, the needs shifted – and so did our services.

Major Cynthia Foster knew she had to take action to support local children served by The Salvation Army Westside Worship and Service Center. She quickly organized a safe learning hub where students could meet daily in a safe place and receive support and encouragement with their remote learning. Kayla, a foster mom with seven kids at home, said the program gave young learners a chance to continue to grow:

It gave them the interaction they needed with other kids. The Salvation Army Westside gave them the chance to focus and get their work done.”

The Salvation Army Pittsburgh Temple Worship and Service Center partnered with First National Bank in August 2020 during a drive-through Back-to-School backpack distribution.

1,752 backpacks were provided to children throughout 14 locations.

Hope for the Holidays: Christmas Assistance Each holiday season, The Salvation Army provides thousands of people throughout Western Pennsylvania with toys, gifts, clothing, and holiday meals, making sure spirits are bright during Christmas and beyond.

A single mother raising her 4-year-old son, Melissa had difficulty finding childcare even before the pandemic began. After facilities closed because of safety measures, she was forced to stay home with her son, losing her income. While receiving assistance, she volunteered as a bell ringer during the 2020 Red Kettle Campaign.

Having nothing, and not knowing what the future holds – God was the only way. Ringing the bell was my way of letting people know that God will take care of us. 2020 was life changing for me with the ups, downs, and what I did with it. I have a new purpose in life. In the future, I will again have the chance to have a good job – while sharing my faith with other people.” -Melissa

2019 Western PA Christmas Assistance: • 10,115 groceries, vouchers, and holiday meal boxes distributed. • 14,765 community meals served at Worship and Service Centers. • 700+ turkeys purchased for Thanksgiving feasts. • 475 meals served with the help of 97 volunteers at the Omni William Penn on Christmas Day. • 2,536 meals at the University of Pittsburgh on Christmas Day.

Hope for the Holidays: Christmas Assistance Treasures for Children and Adopt-A-Family are Salvation Army programs brightening Christmas morning and beyond for families in need. Children create wish lists that are shared with hundreds of companies, small businesses, churches, and individuals. Every gift is sponsored, as partner companies display the tags on Christmas trees, inspiring more people to give back in the spirit of the season. Tina and Sean both have always held jobs. But as Sean was diagnosed with cancer, the emotional and financial obstacles grew. Falling behind on utilities and rent, The Salvation Army provided a Christmas season that gave his family a reason to smile.

Sean was so sick that the family was consumed with caring for him. It wouldn’t have been Christmas without Adopt-a-Family. It made the difference for the entire family,” their caseworker said. “We didn’t know 2019 would be their last Christmas together, as sadly, Sean passed away. But the Adopt-a-Family program brought them joy when they didn’t think they’d have a way to celebrate the season.”
