REV. FR. FREDERICK COMENDADOR, OSA university president

I wish to welcome all freshmen, the batch 2016, to the University of San Agustin. It is with great joy that we open our doors to all of you. The University has a rich history, which spans for more than a hundred years since its establishment in 1904. This storied institution has hosted students from all walks of life and from various parts of the country. We are proud to say that you are now part of an academic institution with a great past and a far greater future ahead for all of us. The University is not only a place of learning but, above all, your home away from home. Within its walls you will meet new friends and forge new alliances that will surely last a lifetime. Dear Friends,

WELCOME to the Augustinian Family! This is your home. This is your family — one happy and vibrant community. Pangabi-abi 2012 is indeed a great celebration to rejoice. You come to step on this historic ground of the University of San Agustin to savor the sweetness of “VIRTUS ET SCIENTIA,” and the desire to interiorize its Vision-Mission in order to achieve UNITY of minds and hearts among the members of the school community. St. Augustine had valued so much friendship and community life. The desire for learning and building up of Augustinian character are best expressed by living with joy and love in friendship. St. Augustine continued the Christian emphasis upon the future life of a human being, stressing that “this life is merely a preparation for the life to come. A human being is educated when his/her moral character and understanding of his/her faith are developed to their fullest potential.” Therefore, the University of San Agustin is really for you! The school would provide you every dimension of education to hone your potentials to the fullest. You can actualize this by taking into heart the advice of St. Augustine: “Do you wish to be great? Then begin by being. Do you desire to construct a vast and lofty fabric? Think first about the foundations of humility. The higher your structure is to be, the deeper must its foundation.” Rest assured of our friendship and mutual concern. Count on us always as we journey together to this academic year 2012-2013.

DENN REED MAE MAGBANUA student council president I am both happy and delighted to welcome you to Augustinian Community. If you are feeling unsure or uncomfortable and probably pondering if you have made the right decision of being here, I can assure each you that you are here because you deserve to be here and because you can bring something new and exciting to this community. So welcome! I can see that some of you know exactly what you want to study and intend to stay focused on that field and that’s great. However, I also encourage you to be open to new ideas, experiences, and directions. You will be learning from great teachers and professors, and you will unquestionably be challenged to think about new topics or even view old topics in new ways. So, my advice to you is to be open-minded and continue to have a positive attitude towards learning! The people you’ll meet in the campus will be your friends and your mentors. Don’t hesitate to call upon them when you need to. They will be your best source of support and they will help you make the most of your experience here. I guarantee there will be times when you wonder why you’re here; that’s natural. But the people in USA will be there to remind you of the reasons. The relationships you cultivate here with the school administrators, faculty, staff, and fellow students will also help build your career. You are all here because you want to become the movers and shakers of the future. I urge you to make this happen by meeting new people, tapping into new resources, and immersing in the culture and training available to you in the University. I conclude by offering you a simple advice on how to make the best of your experience here. Share your knowledge and skills; don’t keep them to yourself. Challenge yourself and your peers on a daily basis. Embrace one another’s passion for different things, and above all, have fun. Never forget to learn, to care and to share every step of the way. Welcome to the University of San Agustin!

We all have favorite artists and songs, but what is it really about these songs that make them memorable and unique? Just as songs have lyrics, the University of San Agustin has its little quirks that set it apart from other schools and make you want to say, HEY! It really is more fun in the U-S-A! LONG LINES Queues are a staple here in San Agustin, especially the long ones. Whether you’re lining up in the cafeteria, paying fees at the Administration building, enrolling in your department, having your notes photocopied, or something as simple as going to the comfort room - long lines are ubiquitous here in the University, that every student, regardless of course and year level, has to put up with. But, on the brighter side, did you know that you burn about 250 calories per hour just by standing? On hindsight now, aren’t you glad you’ve stood for hours through that entire enrolment process?

SEE-CTV’S The many CCTV’s all over the campus have been installed not only to discourage students from doing dark deeds inside the campus but also to remind the students that their safety and security will always be the school’s number one priority. Like it isn’t enough that most students are already under parental lock-and-key at home, the University has now decided to invoke its right to parens patriae* for its 8,000 or so students. Doesn’t that make you feel important? RAIN IRKS As much as we love the cold ambiance that the rain brings, nobody likes soaked shoes and drenched hair while being fully clad in uniform. We can all agree that at one point, we have found adventure and excitement in dodging mini drainage waterfalls, crossing uncharted streams, and hopping over recentlyformed puddles. And who cannot resist taking a dip in the tennis court-turned-infinity pool? So whether it is a sunny or a rainy day, having an umbrella in your bag and being agile are as important as scoring pogi points with the teachers. FANCY FRIDAYS Even though the school supports freedom and individualism, there is such a thing as DECENCY - something that Catholic university students should consider when choosing their free day or Friday outfits. Take note, boys and girls, summer is over – skin exposure, a scruffy look, dyed hair, bright-colored nails and

accessories, henna or permanent tattoos, and flipflops (even if they’re Havaianas or Ipanema) are totally passé now that classes have started. With that in mind, you can now say, “Thanks, God, it’s Friday - time to raid the closet for that fashion-forward but decent outfit!” THE USA LOOK “The school uniform carries the name of the University; it must be worn neatly, properly and with decorum.” This is the rule in the official Student Handbook, but hey, what good are rules if students aren’t there to break them? Seriously, though, all students enrolled in the University must strictly adhere to this rule by wearing the complete and proper school uniform, including the ID, inside the campus at all times. The girls are advised to use only dark colored hair accessories and clear nail polish with the uniform and the guys to wear their hair short, that is, not touching their ears or the collar of their polo shirts. So, new students, these are just some of our more important “institutional cultural icons”… and they sure make studying in the USA a lot more fun! Welcome and enjoy your stay in our University!

Virtus{et}Scientia

Entrance and Exit?

I

words by febrielyn s. tumines • photo by thongenn lanz b. patiam

If you happened to enter through the main gate, you must have seen high above two vintage columns the word, “Virtus”, in old English font. That same day, after your classes were over, you hurried on your way home, passing by the other gate with the word, “Scientia”, right above it. So you went home thinking that Virtus meant Entrance and Scientia was Exit. Well, you thought it wrong. Actually, Virtus is Latin for Virtue and Scientia is obviously Science. You might see them as two contrasting ideas, or even an irony. After all, many men have lost their virtues in the pursuit of scientific excellence. But because of the genius of our spiritual founder, St. Augustine, through his sublime works and teachings, he made us understand that virtue and science could be best pals. As a member of this dynamic community, every Augustinian becomes transformed, not just as academically competitive individuals but also as members of society who work with a heart. We need not sacrifice virtue in the course of attaining wisdom, or vice versa. Even our mission

statement makes it clear- “… committed to promote the common good and the transformation of the person and society.” By this time, you must be wondering, what’s with all the Theology subjects? Being a Catholic-Augustinian educational institution, this University aims to propagate the Gospel of Christ and the teachings and ideals of St. Augustine. Here, we are not just producing smart people but also building character. Everything that we do here in the University is anchored on the ITAS: UnITAS (Unity), CarITAS (Charity), VerITAS (Truth), our three core Augustinian values. So whatever your background or affiliation is, here in school, you are an Augustinian, a favored and nurtured member of the community of one mind and one heart, with the burning passion for truth, one who gives more than he or she takes, and loves others for love’s sake. So, the next time you enter and leave the University gates again, don’t forget: you don’t just gain wisdom or achieve academic excellence; you also develop character - and a heart for humanity.
