W E L COM E On behalf of the national governing body for our sport in the United States, we would like to welcome you to the 2018 USA Baseball NTIS Champions Cup! USA Baseball is coming off a historical 2017 season in which we won every international competition our national teams competed in; winning four gold medals and three international friendship series. It was a feat never realized before in international baseball history and we are incredibly proud of this accomplishment. Due to this unprecedented success, USA Baseball has reclaimed the number one spot in the World Baseball Softball Confederation World Baseball Rankings for the first time since 2014. While it is gratifying to be recognized as the preeminent baseball federation in the world, this would not have been possible without the countless individuals who work for, and on behalf of, USA Baseball. And, more importantly, it would not be possible without the tremendous athletes who, like you, continue to fight for the opportunity to represent their country on one of our national teams. USA Baseball is proud of our track record in developing youth players into premier athletes and that begins at events just like this one. USA Baseball alumni and MLB stars, including Clayton Kershaw, Bryce Harper, Eric Hosmer, Alex Bregman and many more, have participated in USA Baseball events and later became a part of the USA Baseball family on their path to the major leagues. The opportunity that the National Team Identification Series brings to athletes across the nation is unlike any other. It not only provides the opportunity to compete with the nation’s best players, but also the chance to represent the United States in international competition as part of the our national teams or national team development programs. We are committed to bringing first class competition to the players, coaches and fans of the participating teams. As you begin play, we wish all of the players and teams good luck as they strive to win a championship, as well as a spot on a USA Baseball National Team roster in the future. Once again, welcome to the 2018 USA Baseball National Team Identification Series Champions Cup. We are excited that you are here and look forward to seeing phenomenal baseball played throughout the next few days! Yours in baseball,

NTIS: HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

Just like any event, the National Team Identification Series (NTIS) started out as an idea. Rick Riccobono, USA Baseball’s Chief Development Officer and a driving force behind many of USA Baseball’s innovative programs, led the charge. “At the time, the [13U] championships were a big part of our selection model and for individual players who may not be associated, there was a gap in the identification process,” Riccobono said. “We wanted to create an opportunity for kids on a regionalized and accessible level to have access to be a part of Team USA. We started off with the champions program idea, we learned a lot, and that morphed into NTIS.” At the time of the inaugural NTIS in 2009, USA Baseball had just six programs that players could participate in: the 14U National Team, the 16U National Team, the 18U National Team, the Collegiate National Team, the Women’s National Team and the Professional National Team. The impact of the NTIS was felt immediately on all six programs. In 2009, Team USA added five more gold medals to its name, including the 14U National Team and the 18U National Team emerging victorious at their respective COPABE Pan Am “A” Championships, while the 16U National Team won it all at the 2 | 2018 NTIS CHAMPIONS CUP

International Baseball Federation (IBAF) “AA” World Cup. “We figured out that this was a model that works – there’s some real value here,” Riccobono continued. “[We asked ourselves] where was the growth opportunity for this concept? From there, we began to add different age groups for all of the other national teams, and now we’ve added the National Team Development Programs and the program has continued to grow.” Since 2009, Team USA has claimed 19 gold, three silver, and two bronze medals, which is no doubt a reflection on the importance of the NTIS. In fact, the red, white and blue have brought home gold at least once every year since 1997. What started as an event with three age groups competing during one weekend has grown into an event which now fields six age groups hailing from sixteen regions competing over three weekends in August. Thousands of athletes have competed at the USA Baseball National Training Complex throughout the nine-year history of the NTIS. “Originally, we felt like we had a strong idea and a good concept. We didn’t immeUSA Baseball diately recognize that

it would grow into this massive program that serviced all of these teams. It’s important that the NTIS has had so much success because that led itself to expansion and growth,” Riccobono continued. In its current state, the NTIS services the 12U National Team, 14U National Team Development Program, 15U National Team, 16U National Team Development Program, 17U National Team Development Program and the 18U National Team – a significant jump from just three programs in 2009. Even though the event has grown exponentially since its inception, the simple mission of NTIS has stayed constant throughout the years: “[The NTIS] represents the opportunity for every player to pursue their dream of playing for Team USA,” said Riccobono.

FROM NTIS TO NATIONAL TEAM By SEAN ASHER | USA Baseball

When USA Baseball’s National Team Identification Series (NTIS) began back in 2009, it did so with the goal of identifying and maturing the very best baseball talent in the nation. This was no easy task as some of the best baseball talent can often be difficult to discover. Players don’t always have the big platform such as a nationally ranked high school or travel team where they can showcase their talents. NTIS provides this stage for all of its athletes and gives them the opportunity to be recognized. “Our goal with NTIS is to make it possible for kids all over the country to have a chance to be seen, no matter where they’re from,” Senior Director of Baseball Operations Ashley Bratcher said. “If they have the passion for the game and the necessary work ethic to back it up, we want to ensure they get the opportunity to show it.” With 16 regions and six age groups, NTIS has provided more opportunities for young baseball players to be recognized and developed today than ever before. “This experience is different and special for these kids because it’s an opportunity to represent something bigger than your

high school team or your travel team,” continued Bratcher. “They’re playing with players from all over the country who are challenging them to compete at a different level than they have ever competed before.” “Thousands of players have participated in the NTIS and it has certainly made an impact on their lives and playing careers,” continued Bratcher. “I’m proud to have been a part of an initiative that has and will continue to make such a positive impression on our pastime’s future.” As NTIS embarks on its 10th year, it will do so with a track record of identifying hidden talent in all corners of the nation and of paving the pathway for the prospects of tomorrow. The stage has been set for athletes to show what they have. The question is, will you be a part of it?

first time competing against top competition,” said Moniak. “The talent was top tier and being able to go out to North Carolina and take that next step was big.” Moniak was able to use his experience and relationships that he built in his time with NTIS to transition to the 2015 USA Baseball 18U National Team, where he helped the team win a gold medal at the World Baseball Softball Confederation U-18 Baseball World Cup in Japan. “I learned a lot from the coaches and being around other guys that had the same goal as me. Watching and learning from them as they tried to reach their goals was big for me,” continued Moniak. Moniak is currently rostered on the Philadelphia Phillies’ Class A Advanced affiliate Clearwater Threshers.

Mickey Moniak was the Philadelphia Phillies’ first overall pick in the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft, but before he was seen by scouts and discussed around the draft table, he was a 14-year-old NTIS participant from Southern California in 2012. “My time with NTIS was huge. I was in 8th grade at the time and it was really my

Ryan Vilade is another example of a young baseball talent that went through the NTIS process and it ultimately helped him to compete at the next level. The three-time NTIS alumnus from the North Texas region credits his experience at the NTIS as a big contributor to how he got selected to a national team. “My goal growing up was to make a national team and win a gold medal, and I think the NTIS helped me accomplish that goal. It got me seen by scouts and helped me get recognized on a big level,” said Vilade. Vilade certainly accomplished his goal of making a national team. In fact, he was a part of the 2016 18U National Team that won the COPABE Pan Am “AAA” Championships, defeating Cuba in the final. “NTIS was a great experience for me. I got to do it three times and it helped me every time,” continued Vilade. “It gave me exposure to the guys who make decisions about what players go on the national teams and I don’t know if I would have made it on a national team without the NTIS.” Vilade was later drafted in the second round of the 2017 MLB Draft by the Colorado Rockies. He is currently playing on the Colorado Rockies’ Class A affiliate Asheville Tourists.

TOURNAMENT PITCHER USE LIMITATION RULES If a pitcher reaches the daily max (pitches in a game) threshold (95/105) while facing a batter, the pitcher may continue to pitch until any one of the following events occur: 1.That batter reaches base; 2.That batter is retired; 3.The third out is made to complete the half-inning. A pitcher’s required rest is based off a hard pitch count of actual pitches thrown and does not reset to the pitch count tallied at the beginning of the last batter faced. If a player has thrown 29 pitches and after facing the last batter of the inning has thrown 34 then that pitcher’s pitch count for the day is 34 (not 29) and they must now take one day of rest. REPORTING USA Baseball official scorers will be responsible for the official pitch count at each field. An aggregate report for all teams in the tournament will be distributed electronically at the completion of each day’s games to the team contact on record. The pitch count monitored and kept in the tower is the only official pitch count that will be used. Managers or coaches pitch counts are NOT official, but they are welcome to periodically check with the official scorer to ensure their count is correct. The official scorekeeper will communicate the pitch count at the beginning of each inning or as needed. Should a pitch count be protested, the protesting team must present an official score book or digital score keeping application to the Site Supervisor and Tournament Director. The pitch count kept by the tower can be overturned if both the Site Supervisor and Tournament Director come to the conclusion that a mistake was made on behalf of USA Baseball’s scorekeeper. The new pitch count will be recorded and reflected in the following day’s pitch count report. SUSPENDED GAMES For purposes of applying the pitcher use limitations in the event a team plays twice on a single day because a prior game was either postponed or suspended, the follow-

ing rules apply: The per-game total pitch maximums (but not mandatory rest) shall be deemed to be “reset” for the resumption of the suspended game. (For example, a pitcher who has thrown less than 30 pitches when a game is suspended may remain in the game and is not required to be removed prior to 95/105 pitches the next day (14U/15U: 95, 17U: 105).); A player who is a team’s pitcher at the time a game is suspended and then becomes subject to a mandatory rest day at the time the suspended game is resumed shall be removed from the game at the time the game is resumed. (For example, a pitcher who is in the game at the time the game is suspended and who has thrown 31 or more pitches in that game may not pitch in the resumption of the suspended game the next day.); A pitcher who must rest for a day must rest for all games on that day (i.e., rest during a postponed or resumed suspended game shall not be deemed to satisfy a mandatory rest day if there is a subsequent game on the same day). (For example, a pitcher who is in the game at the time the game is suspended and who has thrown 31 or more pitches in that game may not pitch in either the resumption of the suspended game or any subsequent game that day.); A pitcher who remains in at the resumption of the suspended or postponed game may not pitch in any subsequent game that day. (For example, a pitcher who is in the game at the time the game is suspended and resumed the next day may not pitch in the subsequent regularly scheduled game that same day.)

eligible to throw in any subsequent game that day, however, he will still be limited to the daily max of 95/105 pitches on the day. (For example, a 14U/15U pitcher who has thrown 20 pitches in game one may pitch in the second game that day, but is limited to only 75 pitches in that given game. At that point, the pitcher will be subject to the appropriate number of rest days based on the total pitches thrown that day, which in this case would be 4 days (76+ pitches).) Due to the nature of the tournament format, the USA Baseball Operations Staff will provide each coach with an updated pitch count sheet as soon as possible prior to the start of their second game of the day on days where a doubleheader is scheduled. For more information on the Pitch Smart guidelines, visit:

DOUBLEHEADERS The second game of a scheduled doubleheader will not serve as a rest day for pitchers having thrown in the first game of the day. (For example, a pitcher who has thrown 31 or more pitches in the first game of the day may not pitch in any subsequent game that day and is subject to the appropriate number of rest days based on the total pitches thrown.) NTIS: 2017 IN REVIEW 15U

Gregg Forwerck

By KATIE BOSTIC | USA Baseball

In 2017, USA Baseball introduced the Champions Cup to the National Team Identification Series, recognizing the top region competing through all six age groups at the National Training Complex over three weeks in August. Champions Cup points are accumulated based on which place the region finishes within the respective age groups, and the region with the most points after three weeks of competition will take home the trophy. In the Champions Cup’s inaugural year, Southern California took home the hardware after securing first place in the 11U, 14U, and 16U age groups as well as a second-place finish in 13U. 2017 NTIS Champions Cup Gold Medalists

11U

SoCal and Northwest squared off in an extra-innings thriller for the 11U title in 2017. Northwest jumped out to an early lead with a four-run first inning, but SoCal was able to hold them to just one more run for the rest of the game while chipping away at the lead and eventually tying the game at 5-5 in the sixth inning. Both teams were able to load the bases in the seventh inning but neither was able to push a run across 8 | 2018 NTIS CHAMPIONS CUP

as the championship game went into extra innings. After a stalemate in the seventh inning, SoCal took over, scoring five in the eighth to win the title, 10-5.

13 U

Southwest pieced together a five-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Southern California, 8-7, in walk-off fashion to claim the 13U title. With no outs and trailing 6-3 in its final at-bats, Southwest scored on a throwing error, and Steven Milam followed with a line-drive RBI-double before Mason Neville hit an RBI-triple to tie the game at seven. Following an intentional walk by Southern California, Ruben Castro came through with the clutch RBI-single to left field to bring in the winning run and capture the gold medal.

Southwest scored six runs in the fifth inning of the gold medal game and defeated New England 11-6 for the 2017 15U NTIS championship. New England jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first, before adding two more runs in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth to go ahead 5-0. But Southwest was able to put together an impressive six-run rally in the fifth to take the lead, 6-5. After giving up another run immediately after taking the lead, four consecutive walks once again put them in front, 7-6. Then they put the game out of reach, scoring two on back-to-back bases-loaded-walks and another pair on a twoRBI double from Chase Gallegos, securing Southwest the 15U NTIS title with an 11-6 win over New England.

16U

Southern California was able to overcome an early deficit to secure the gold medal in the 2017 16U NTIS with a 6-2 victory over Northwest. Northwest opened scoring in the bottom of the first to take an early 2-0 lead, but that was all they would manage from the plate. Southern California got on the board in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead that it wouldn’t relinquish. In the fifth inning, a two-RBI triple and an RBI-single added three more for the final 6-2 score and another NTIS gold medal for Southern California.

14 U

Southern California emerged victorious in an in-state battle with Northern California to claim the 2017 14U NTIS gold medal. Training 1-0 in the second inning, Southern California scored on an RBI-triple and its offense didn’t look back, scoring in every inning that followed. Northern California got within two in the fifth but the rally fell short as Southern California scored four more runs late to put the game away and secure 14U NTIS gold medal with a 9-6 victory.

WHY NTIS?

USA Baseball File Photo

By KATIE BOSTIC | USA Baseball

On the surface, the USA Baseball National Team Identification Series (NTIS) is the widest reaching and most comprehensive player identification event for Team USA – but it’s so much more than that. “Something that people may not know is that aside from being an opportunity to play for a national team, it’s one of the highest quality baseball experiences that a player can have playing the sport,” Russell Hartford, who will oversee the day-to-day operations at the NTIS Champions Cup, said. “We have an incredibly dedicated staff, we have some of the best facilities in the world and we offer a chance for players to represent their country that they can’t get anywhere else.” The sheer significance of the NTIS is not only felt during games. While winning the Champions Cup is the immediate goal at the event, the importance of the event extends before the players ever arrive and after they depart the National Training Complex. “The program does provide insights for every player if they are willing to be honest

with themselves about how they stack up,” USA Baseball Chief Development Officer Rick Riccobono said. “I’ve always believed that as a former player, players are smart, and they know where they fit in with their peers and they know the players that have advanced skill sets and the players that they’re ahead of. [At the NTIS] they’re able to receive feedback that a coach or a parent can’t give them.” The NTIS has grown significantly throughout the years. What started as three age groups competing over one weekend in 2009 has grown to six age groups competing over three weekends in 2018. The program allows players to be evaluated for an opportunity to participate with one of six USA Baseball national team and national team development programs. Even as the largest and most comprehensive identification event USA Baseball offers, Hartford knows that there’s always room for growth. “It’s an event that we are always striving to improve and grow. We’ve seen a long list of talented athletes come through this program,” Hartford said. “We expect the competitiveness, quality and the scope of the

event to continue into the future.” That list of talented athletes includes seven-time Team USA alum and current Chicago Cubs outfielder Albert Almora, fivetime Team USA alum, current Houston Astros shortstop Alex Bregman and twotime Team USA alum and current Washington Nationals right fielder Bryce Harper. At the end of the day, players who are extended an invitation to a national team or national team development program will be one step closer to wearing the stars and stripes. Players will have the opportunity to hone their craft while playing with and against the best players their age in the country. Even so, while it may be obvious that the players who participate in the NTIS are talented baseball players, it takes more than that to represent the red, white and blue. “Obviously we look for a talented high-level athlete, but we look for individuals that are capable of being part of a team who will serve as strong representatives for the United States and who embody and represent the values of USA Baseball,” Hartford said.

ALUMNI COL UMN WH AT U SA BAS E BA L L MEANS TO ME By MIKE SIANI | USA Baseball Alumnus

Arriving at the Tournament of Stars as an underclassman in 2016, I didn’t know what to expect. It was an honor simply to be invited to participate, and I saw it as an opportunity to experience what it takes to play at the highest level possible and determine what I needed to work on in order to develop as my baseball career furthered. I had confidence that I could hang with the other 107 players at the tryout, but there was still a part of me that understood I had a lot to learn in order to make an impact. I truly had no idea what I was getting into or how the next two years would change my life for the better. From the first day I got to wear the “USA” logo across my chest down in Cary, North Carolina, my mindset changed. There is something dramatic that happens to you when you understand the significance of playing for your country. It is humbling to imagine all of those people who wore the red, white and blue uniform before you and to think about the kids looking up to you as you represent this great country. I was there to compete against the 107 best players in the country and prove to myself that I belonged. I continued to work hard that week and do my best, and it paid off. I was asked to be a part of the 40-man National Team Trials in Houston a few months later. That whole week taught me

Jeff Haynes

Jeff Haynes

numerous lessons. Living with a host family was something that I had never experienced before, and USA Baseball did a great job putting me with a family that I still keep in contact with now. I also got to meet so many new people who taught me how to go about my business in the right way and strive to bring out the best in myself and others. Other players, coaches and USA Baseball staff helped me feel like I belonged and showed me what it takes to compete at the highest level. Additionally, I learned to be more disciplined on and off the field, and going out every day against the best in the nation really humbled me and pushed me to develop as a player and a person. Eventually that September I was asked to be a part of the final 20-man roster that would travel to Mexico to compete for the Pan-American Championship. This was an honor that cannot be compared to anything else. Taking the field wearing “USA” across my chest and knowing I was there to compete for a gold medal that I would bring back to my country gave me goosebumps every time. Spending three weeks in Mexico taught me so much about myself. I learned how to navigate in a foreign country and what it means to have a brotherhood with my teammates. We were playing for something bigger than ourselves, bigger than a team or and organization. We were playing for our

country and all the people in it. What made it even better was that we brought home the gold, which was our goal as we entered the tournament. As 2017 approached, I knew I was going to have to step into a new role if I was lucky enough to play on the 18U National Team again. I joined the other three returning players – Triston Casas, Brice Turang, and Jarred Kelenic – and we knew that our experiences the year prior could help the team for the better this year. But, there are no guarantees; so all four of us had to work even harder this time around to prove that we not only belonged on the team again but should be looked up to as leaders. Our goal was to show the rest of the world what USA Baseball was all about, meaning that we represented our country with pride and respect while playing the game with aggression and relentlessness. We took this mindset into the world championships and came home with the gold once again. The entire USA Baseball organization has made not just me, but all players involved better talents on the field and more mature men off of it as well. I am grateful to everyone affiliated with USA Baseball for my experiences over the past two years. Bringing home two gold medals to Glenside, Pennsylvania, back to the people that brought me up, is something that I can’t put into words, but will always treasure. USABASEBALL. com | 13
