THE LAST PITCH IS THROWN. As leaves fall and temperatures begin to drop, stadiums, dugouts and diamonds fall quiet for the season. But this is no time to let up or reminisce on the glories of past years. The success of next season depends on the work you put in right now. Maybe it’s switching things up and hitting the court with a different team in search of a new championship. Maybe it’s waking up a little earlier to push yourself a little longer on that morning run. Maybe it’s working even harder in the gym to reach a new goal that you never thought you could achieve. Maybe it’s focusing on your health and nutrition to recover and recharge for the next challenges. Whatever the offseason looks like for you, the USA Baseball Shop is here to make sure you have the gear to help you reach your goals and be the best version of yourself – on and off the field. A new season is just around the corner and who knows what it will hold, but while the offseason is here, you might as well own it.

“Winning championships is always awesome, but winning a gold medal for your country is a whole different feeling.” -- ALEX HUGO

A

lex Hugo hasn’t been in the baseball world long – her first tryout for the USA Baseball Women’s National Team was less than two years ago – but that has been plenty of time for her to make a splash. In that year and a half, she has broken records, claimed a gold medal and developed into a leader on Team USA. And she’s just getting started. “Playing for a national team is something that you dream of as an athlete,” Hugo said. “For me, I love America and my brother is in the Army, so I feel very proud to get an opportunity like this…it makes me emotional sometimes because I do feel so much pride for my country. It’s awesome.” Following a stellar collegiate and professional softball career at the University of Georgia and in the National Professional Fastpitch League, Hugo’s transition to baseball in 2018 was overwhelming, to say the least. She was playing a brand-new sport at the highest level against the best international competition the world

had to offer. In more ways than one, this was a whole new ballgame. “I wasn’t used to baseball, so it was just kind of a whirlwind,” Hugo said of making her first Women’s National Team and playing in the 2018 World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Women’s Baseball World Cup. But it was a whirlwind that left her wanting more. Team USA fell to Canada in the bronze medal game of that tournament, but Hugo came away from her first experience on Team USA with new friends, new skills and knowing that her first experience would definitely not be her last. “It was really fun,” Hugo said. “It’s great having something to train for all year, having something to look forward to and then when you get the chance, hopefully you make your country proud.” And Hugo did just that in her second season. Taking everything she learned in 2018, the infielder trained hard in the offseason and returned as a force to be reckoned with for the 2019 Women’s National Team.

She hit .652/.742/1.391 with a teamleading 15 hits, 20 runs scored, 18 RBIs and four home runs in seven games at the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup Americas Qualifier 2019, while also slugging five doubles and swiping six bags. Her offseason work prior to that 2019 tournament played a huge role in her surge in production as she committed to training hard and not letting the mental side of the game beat her. And it more than paid off. “(In the offseason) I just took a deep breath,” Hugo explained. “It was so overwhelming for me (in 2018) just because I had never experienced a World Cup, I had never experienced a tryout and I thought, with it being baseball, it was so different. But then I realized that I know how to play and I just needed to let myself. I needed to get out of my own way.” Not only did she get out of her own way – earning MVP honors for her individual work in the tournament – she also ended up leading the way to the Women’s National Team’s first gold medal since 2015. “As you grow up as an athlete, winning championships is always awesome, but winning a gold medal for your country is a whole different feeling. (The moment we won in 2019) was an amazing feeling with everyone

on the field and seeing their reactions. It was something that I’ll never forget.” And something she wants to repeat. Soon. So, she’s back to putting in the work this offseason because this is where the road to the next gold medal starts. “I don’t want to hype myself up. I don’t want to get too mental about it,” Hugo explained. “So, I’m thinking about the different types of teams we might play next year because they all have different styles. But I also want to train how I normally have been so I can take the same feeling I had at the end of 2018, move it into the next tournament, and just keep it rolling.” That next tournament? The 2020 WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup – which the U.S. hasn’t won since 2006. And now that she has proven what she can do and the level she can play at, it’s all about raising the bar and recreating that gold medal feeling by finishing the mission of bringing home a world championship. “You have that feeling (of winning gold) and you think, ‘Okay, it’s going to be even better when we go to the World Cup next year and win that.’” So, watch out, world, because Alex Hugo may have just gotten here, but she’s here to stay and she’s not letting up.

Year Player Draft and a possible USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award finalist. You got to spend the past two summers with USA Baseball on the Collegiate National Team, can you describe what those experiences were like for you? Those experiences were unreal, fun and something that I will carry with

myself for the rest of my life. I dreamt of being on Team USA and when I got the call freshman year it felt like – I had a good season so it felt like I was in a dream. Paul Mainieri called me to be on the team and it was like, “Someone pinch me,” you know? It didn’t feel real. It was so cool. Honestly, the friendships that I have made with teammates – both years

W INT ER

– I am going to hold on to forever. In baseball, it’s like a little fraternity, and the higher you go up – like Team USA, [being on] Team USA team is a fraternity as well, but it’s an even smaller and more selective one, so it’s really cool to be a part of that family and to have those friendships with my teammates. You eluded to your feelings when you got your first invitation to be on the team and touched on the friendships you made both years. How was it different entering your second summer with the Collegiate National Team than your first? It was really cool the second summer because I felt like, “I got this.” I was one of the few guys on the team that was on it my freshman year so I knew some of the guys would look up to me for direction on what to do. I remember being super nervous [the summer after] my freshman year because you’re playing with some guys that you watch on TV and think, “Wow, they are really good.” You come in with a big question mark about how you are going to compare [to the other players] and to know that I could compete and be a solid player on the team was comforting. I had Andrew Vaughn as my mentor my freshman year and we have known each other a while. So, having him direct me on what to do made me [feel] comfortable and for me to translate that into my second year was really fun and a good opportunity to lead some guys and have fun doing it. What did you think about the international game and your opponents? I thought it was really cool being able to play against guys who don’t speak your language. You don’t know anything about them besides they love baseball and they are on their national teams, so they have to be good. It is a little bit of a culture shock because they have different playing styles. The Japanese pitch their sequences on the mound differently [than what we are used to] so you have you adjust to that. It is a really cool experience and

2019

LOOKBOOK

something I really enjoyed for the last two summers. The first summer you played in North Carolina at the National Training Complex before traveling down to Cuba. What was your experience like in Cuba? That was awesome, getting to go to Cuba. One time we were at dinner and we were like, “Wow. We are in Cuba right now.” You kind of question it but this is really cool. I went to my maps and zoomed out from my phone and took a screenshot of my location in Cuba. I still have it. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Playing on their field in that big stadium… getting to experience a different feel of a stadium was cool and honestly everything about it was a good experience.

How far did you zoom out for your screenshot? Just enough to see the United States and that I am below Florida in Cuba. How do you think playing with Team USA the first summer helped you in preparation for your sophomore year at ASU? I think it was a confidence boost. Knowing you’re one of the best players in the country and to get that recognition, it gives you that extra level of confidence of, “I got this. I’ve played on Team USA.” You kind of have that inside of you. So, having all of those experiences and playing against those Japan pitchers and knowing that you can compete against them and succeed, it gives you confidence in your college season because some of those Japan pitchers would be in AA right now if they were in America. You feel like you’ve seen it all. You were invited back for your sophomore year and was able to travel to Taiwan and Japan for two friendship series. Was that your first time in Asia? What was that like for you? That was my first time in Asia and that was awesome. I got lucky that I got to go to Cuba my first year and Asia my second. Not all of the guys get that… a lot of guys don’t. Taiwan was very hot and very humid and it was cool to see their way of life. They see our way of life when they come here but when we go there we get to see their lifestyle and what they eat. It’s pretty good food! The McDonalds were different though.

How was the environment for your games in Japan? The Japanese fans are nuts. It is totally different because they have the band, and the band is by the first base side for most of the games, so I had that in my left ear which is super cool. It kind of gives you that extra adrenaline and energy during the game. Their [Japan] fans are awesome and they were huge supporters of the Japan team but really respected us, so that was really nice to have in the crowd. You could tell in big

W INT ER

situations that our pitchers had a little something more to them [because of the crowd]. Being in that environment was a lot of fun and competing in it was really cool. What was it like getting to play with so many different players from different schools that you have never met or are normally competing against? It’s always super fun. You played against a guy on a different team or you watched them on tv in Omaha or in a Super Regional. So, you have this thought of them in your head and then you meet them. It’s just really cool to build a friendship with them and learn about them as a person, learn about what their life is like at school… what is a day in the life at [their school]? It’s a quick friendship because you’re chasing the same dream and you’re doing the same things. What is the biggest take away for you from your time playing for USA Baseball? The travel is super cool. Being able to see different parts of the world that I probably wouldn’t… I probably wouldn’t have gone to Cuba in my life if I was not with USA. And the feeling of being on Team USA. I remember being in Japan in Game 5 and they had a really good crowd in the Tokyo Meiji [Jingu] Stadium, a beautiful turf field… and hearing the national anthem during that game just hit [me] different. All of that and the friendships that are going to last a lifetime are the biggest takeaways for me. This year is a big year for you, heading into your junior year at Arizona State and being draft-eligible. What have you been working on this offseason to prepare for this season? I’m not really working on anything in particular. I’m working out to be strong – staying strong I should say – and just being me, ‘cause that has worked the last two seasons and summers. I’m really excited for this year, I think we have a really good team and we should make a good run at it. I’m excited.

USA BASEBALL FILE PHOTO

What are your goals for your season – for both your team and for yourself? Team goals are to go to Omaha, have fun and win it all. Personal goal is to have fun and keep on keeping on. When I focus on winning as a team, that is when I play my best. That is what I’m going to worry about, just being myself and having fun with it and everything else will fall into place. Looking ahead to the Draft, what parts of your game do you think will have truly put you in the best possible spot leading in to that night? My competitiveness, my ability in the batter’s box, [being a] solid defender and just being a really good baseball player. As long as I am focused on the team winning and trying to win a national championship, everything is going to work out. What would you tell a young kid or a current college student who is offered a spot on or is trying out for a spot on a USA Baseball national team? Have fun with it and play your heart out, and respect the game. You’re representing your country. You are C a t ch i n g

not playing FOR your country, you are representing your country. You want to go to Japan and you’re going to bust your butt down the line and respect the game. That is what Japanese fans are going to take away from those games, that we play the game the right way. Respect the game and have a lot of fun. You can’t be uptight playing baseball… you’re not going to reach your full potential if you’re nervous all the time. Looking down the road in your career, what do you think you will remember most about your amateur/ youth career? I will remember my friends that I have made that will last a lifetime. I will remember playing for Team USA and having some of the best times of my life wearing the USA jersey. I will just remember having fun and have fun living life.

THE ROAD TO TOKYO from March 22-26 in Arizona. The eight-team tournament is split into two pools and features half of the top12 ranked teams in the WBSC World Baseball rankings. The U.S. was drawn into Group A and will face the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Puerto Rico in its first three games of the tournament. Group B features Canada, Colombia, Cuba and Venezuela. The top two teams in each pool will advance to the semifinals and the winner of the WBSC America’s Olympic Qualifier will earn the fifth spot in the Olympic Games. The second-place team and third place team in the event will earn the last two spots in the WBSC Global Baseball Qualifier in Taiwan from April 1-5.

T

he athletes trying to make a USA Baseball national team are not the only one’s owning the offseason. The staff at the USA Baseball executive offices will also be locked in on prepping for 2020. The top priority for the staff? Earning a spot in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Baseball returns to the Olympic Programme for the first time since the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, where Team USA came home with a bronze medal. The U.S. has an impressive track record in the Olympics, winning gold in Seoul 1988 and the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, silver in Los Angeles 1984, and a bronze in Atlanta 1996. But qualifying for the Olympic Games is not a given. With the reinstatement of baseball on the Programme, comes

some changes. The tournament will feature six teams in 2020, as opposed to the old eight-team tournaments. And, as of the completion of the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Premier12 tournament in November, four of the spots have been filled by Israel, Japan (host), Korea and Mexico. USA Baseball will look to claim one of the last two spots in March and April of next year but find themselves in arguably the deepest and toughest baseball region in the world. The U.S. will work this offseason to compete and earn its way into the Games and here is how Team USA can find its way to Tokyo 2020. WBSC AMERICAS OLYMPIC QUALIFIER The United States will host the WBSC Americas Olympic Qualifier

TEAM USA SCHEDULE March 22: USA vs. Nicaragua March 23: USA vs. Dominican Republic March 24: USA vs. Puerto Rico March 25: Semifinals March 26: Medal Round WBSC GLOBAL BASEBALL QUALIFIER The final spot in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will be awarded after the six-team WBSC Global Baseball Qualifier in Taiwan from April 1-5, 2020. China, Chinese Taipei and the Netherlands have already secured their spot in the final qualifier, and will be joined by the winner of the Oceania Pre Qualifier and the second and third place teams from the WBSC Americas Qualifier. The event is a round robin tournament and the country with the best record will earn the final spot in the Olympic Games.
