A LETTER FROM THE
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR / CEO On behalf of the national governing body for our sport in the United States, we would like to welcome you to the USA Baseball National Training Complex for the inaugural National Team Championships North Carolina! This unique event began in 1996 as the Junior Olympics in Fort Myers, Florida, and served as an identifying event for the former 16U National Team. The event has experienced tremendous growth over the last 24 years, with over 350 teams participating in last year’s tournament; allowing athletes to compete against the very best teams from all across the country. More importantly, the National Team Championships continue to provide the opportunity for individuals to represent the United States as members of the 15U National Team and also our Athlete Development Program and National Team Development Programs. After years of hosting this event in Palm Beach County, Florida, and Phoenix, Arizona, we are thrilled to expand to our home in Cary, North Carolina. It is an honor for us invite the most elite baseball programs from across the country to share the same field that countless MLB stars have played on en route to the professional ranks, including Kris Bryant, Gerrit Cole, Bryce Harper, Manny Machado, Stephen Strasburg and Mike Trout, among others! USA Baseball is proud of our track record in developing youth players into premier athletes and that growth begins at events just like this one. As you begin play, we wish all of the players and teams good luck as they strive to win a championship and encourage them to have fun and enjoy this opportunity to compete against the nation’s best talent while being evaluated by USA Baseball national team scouts and coaches.

10 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE 2020 NATIONAL TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS
4
2 0 2 0 N AT I O N A L T E A M C H A M P I O N S H I P S
ONE
The National Team Championships is almost ten years older than all of its participating athletes. The event began in 1996 as the USA Junior Olympic Baseball Championships in partnership with the then-United States Olympic Committee.
TWO
This isn’t the first – or even second – time the National Team Championships has expanded its reach across the U.S. The tournament moved with USA Baseball when the organization relocated its headquarters from New Jersey to Arizona in 1998 before being split between Arizona and Florida in 2001. Now, North Carolina becomes the fourth state to host the illustrious event.
THREE
In 24 years as a primary identification event for Team USA, the National Team Championships has seen its fair share of exceptional talent. MLB AllStars like Bryce Harper, Alex Bregman, Clayton Kershaw, Manny Machado, Freddie Freeman and Justin Upton all made their way to playing for the red, white and blue through this tournament.
Jared Anderson of the 1998 16U National Team
FOUR
This year, you won’t miss a single pitch. For the first time ever, every game of the National Team Championships will be streamed live (weather permitting) on PlaySight.com and YouTube.com/ USABaseballTV so everyone can tune in from anywhere.
FIVE
The National Team Championships may have started small, but it hasn’t stayed that way. In 2019, 374 teams from 18 different states participated in the event, giving more than 7,500 athletes the chance to showcase their talents for a chance to play for Team USA.
SIX
Bryce Harper. Kris Bryant. Marcus Stroman. Trea Turner. Mike Trout. Stephen Strasburg. The list of stars who have played at the National Training Complex goes on and on, and now every 2020 National Team Championships North Carolina participant can add their own name to it.

SEVEN
The best athletes are defined – and strengthened – by more than just what they can do in-game. All participants at the National Team Championships North Carolina will undergo PDP testing to assess their baseball and athletic skills with state-ofthe-art technology so they know exactly where they stand and where they can improve.
EIGHT
No one goes unnoticed at the National Team Championships. The event is one of the biggest on the scouting calendar so there will be plenty of eyes on all the participants as USA Baseball scouts, National Team coaches and scouts from MLB Clubs evaluate every athlete.

MEET VERONICA A LVA R E Z B Y E M I LY F E D E W A
Veronica Alvarez’s experience in baseball hasn’t always been easy or straightforward. There has been adversity; there have been detours; there have been more than a few nay-sayers. But none of that has ever mattered. She has never been deterred because as far as she’s concerned baseball is where she belongs, no matter the obstacles. “I’m a woman in this male-dominated world, but I honestly feel comfortable there,” Alvarez said. “There’s nowhere I’m more comfortable than on a baseball field.” That comfort comes naturally – Alvarez knew early on she was meant to be a baseball player – but it also comes from a lifetime on the diamond as a student of the game she loves. 8

A try-out in Kenosha, Washington, gave five-time alum Veronica Alvarez her start with the Women’s National team and she hasn’t looked back since.
BASEBALL BEGINNINGS
Even at just five years old, it was obvious to everyone – including, and maybe most, to Alvarez herself – that she belonged on a diamond of dirt surrounded by a sea of grass. She said no to the ballet classes her parents suggested. Instead, she was a staple at her older brother’s baseball games, taking it all in and being a part of the action however she could. “I just wanted to play no matter what from the beginning. I don’t know why I had this love for the game but it was there and it was real,” Alvarez recalled. “I remember my brother started playing before me and I was all about being the bat girl. I just wanted to be there. “Then I was the one that wanted to practice. As I got older, I was the one out there throwing balls against the garage door and hitting into our net for hours. I absolutely loved it from the beginning and the love just grew and grew and grew.” When she finally got her chance, her passion and immediate love for the game wasn’t all she had going for her. She also had talent and the combination meant she could not easily be written off. “I remember it being a big deal that I was going to try out,” she said. “And they tried to kind of dismiss me but then I threw the ball from third base and they were like, ‘oh, can’t dismiss her!’” Her arm strength at a young age was impressive and it not only earned her the spot on the team, but also the respect of her coaches and peers. She knew she belonged there and it didn’t take long before everyone else knew it too. During her early playing days, Alvarez spent time at third and on the mound but there was one position that called her name. So, when the team needed a catcher one fateful afternoon, she raised her hand and never looked back. “One day, our coach said ‘we need someone to catch’ and my mom was shaking her head but she couldn’t fight it,” Alvarez laughed. “She couldn’t fight it. I couldn’t fight it. I was meant to be a catcher.” From then on, Alvarez could be found behind the plate – even when she eventually made the switch to softball like so many young girls do. She never felt as though she was forced out of baseball and into softball though – in fact, she is quick to defend the other sport that gave her so many opportunities.
Because of softball, Alvarez received a full-ride scholarship to Villanova and a chance to continue playing during a summer in Spain after graduation. It was that summer abroad that truly hammered home to her that she could not – like so many athletes must do after college – just stop playing. But the sport she really wanted to keep playing? Baseball, of course. “When I came back (from Spain), I started working for the public school system at a desk job and I was sitting there and all I could think was ‘I have to play baseball somehow,’” Alvarez said. “So, I started googling and it eventually linked me to USA Baseball.” She had just missed the 2006 Women’s National Team which had recently returned from the World Cup with a gold medal, but a connection was made and when the next try-out was announced a couple years later, Alvarez quickly made her way to Kenosha, Wisconsin, without a second thought. And just like that, her baseball journey was back on track.

T H E T E A M U S A PAT H WAY
When she booked her trip to the USA Baseball Women’s National Team try-out in Wisconsin, Alvarez had only her favorite movie, A League Of Their Own, as a reference point for what to expect. While this tournament wasn’t quite the same, there were some aspects that reminded Alvarez of the film – not the least of which was actually getting to meet and interact with members of the original All-American Girls Professional Baseball League during the event. But the biggest similarity was her reaction to finally seeing all the athletes. Like the film’s protagonists, Alvarez was shocked to see just how many women who, like her, had a passion for playing baseball. “(The tournament) was phenomenal. It was the first time that I saw that many women playing baseball in one place,” she recalled. “It blew my mind. I had no idea – as so many girls and women still have no idea – that something like that existed.” Not only did it exist, but she was getting a chance to be part of it and she did not let the chance pass her by. Alvarez excelled at the event and was chosen to represent the U.S. on the 2008 Women’s National Team at the International Baseball Federation (IBAF) Women’s World Cup in Matsuyama, Japan, where she helped Team USA win a bronze medal. “Wearing the USA jersey and being able to represent the United States in international competition is
10
2 0 2 0 N AT I O N A L T E A M C H A M P I O N S H I P S
indescribable,” Alvarez said. “Standing for the national anthem with that jersey on, there’s nothing that compares to it. “I’m a first-generation American citizen and the United States provided so much for my family, so playing for the national team and representing the country in that way was the ultimate goal for me.” And 2008 was just the start. She went on to play on four more national teams, earning another bronze medal and a silver medal at the IBAF Women’s World Cups in 2010 and 2012, respectively. She was also a member of the 2015 Women’s National Team that claimed gold at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games. “Kenosha, Wisconsin, was the beginning of an epic career in baseball,” Alvarez said. “I really appreciate that moment because that’s what kickstarted all of this. I am so lucky to have extended my career after college into my thirties – a lot of people don’t have that chance.” It was a career that gave her friendships, experiences and memories of a lifetime, but eventually, it was time for the next chapter. Following the 2016 World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Women’s Baseball World Cup, Alvarez made the difficult decision to retire from playing. But while she knew it was the right choice, she was not willing to say goodbye to baseball, or Team USA, entirely.
So, when another opportunity to extend her baseball career came in the form of coaching, Alvarez – once again – jumped at the chance. “Making that decision (to retire) was heartbreaking and really hard for me. A lifetime of playing, a lifetime of doing something I love, had come to an end,” Alvarez said. “But once I came to terms with it, it allowed me to turn the page and go all-in to coaching.” And go all in she did, coaching at every joint USA Baseball and MLB event she could from the Trailblazer Series to the Girls Breakthrough Series, and at the Women’s National Team Identification Series, before finally being chosen for the 2018 Women’s National Team coaching staff. “Putting on that jersey as part of the staff meant so much because it was progress,” Alvarez said. “We’ve had women on the Women’s National Team coaching staff before but not that many so it was an honor to get to help lead our team.” In her role on the staff, Alvarez was able to hone her ability to see the bigger picture and truly make the transition from player to coach. It was an invaluable experience that allowed her to learn the game in a different way and prepared her for her next challenges – like getting a chance to coach at MLB Spring Training with the Oakland Athletics. Or write the Women’s National Team lineup instead of appearing in it. “I think I’ll look back on my time with (the 2018 Women’s National Team) staff as a big part of my progress,” she said. “Without that experience, I wouldn’t have been mentally ready to, and confident in, approaching an opportunity like the one I got with the Oakland A’s – or the one I got to lead Team USA.” This is part one of a two-part feature on five-time Women’s National Team player and two-time manager, Veronica Alvarez.

BRINGING THE N AT I O N A L T E A M CHAMPIONSHIPS TO NORTH CAROLINA The National Team Championships have been an integral part of the USA Baseball athlete identification process and a premier event on the youth baseball schedule since its inception in 1996. And more than two decades later, that hasn’t changed. In fact, the tournament has only grown in both size and esteem over the years, expanding from a 56-team tournament in Florida to an event that hosted 374 teams and more than 7,500 athletes in both Arizona and Florida in 2019. Now, the National Team Championships is expanding once again, this time to North Carolina and the home of Team USA.

“We are excited to increase the opportunities for young athletes with the growth of the National Team Championships,” said USA Baseball Senior Director of Baseball Operations, Ashley Bratcher. “Expanding this event to North Carolina not only allows more players to participate in USA Baseball programming, but also offers a unique chance for teams to play at the National Training Complex – a first-class facility that is the home and heartbeat of Team USA.” The National Training Complex is no stranger to intense and elite competition. As the training site of Team USA, the complex has been the site of international series between the U.S. and Japan, Cuba, Chinese Taipei and Canada; it has been the battle ground where some of the best young athletes in the country have fought for a chance to represent their country; it has served as a summer home for players like Kris Bryant, Dansby Swanson, Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber, Marcus Stroman, Mike Trout and many more. In 2020, every team coming to the National Team Championships North Carolina will get to continue that legacy and follow in the footsteps of those
baseball greats: playing on Major League-quality fields against the best competition in the country. “The National Training Complex is the best natural grass baseball facility in the country, and it gives players and teams the opportunity to play where legends who wore the red, white and blue have played,” said Director of Baseball Operations, Charles Lane. But a chance to play on some of the best baseball fields in the country is not the only benefit awaiting teams that make the trip to Cary, North Carolina. The teams converging on the National Training Complex this summer will showcase some of the best talent the U.S. has to offer. The competition will be second to none, giving teams the perfect opportunity to prove they can play with the best youth baseball programs in the country and allowing athletes to show that they’ve got what it takes to stand out in a crowd – especially at an event that will be heavily scouted by MLB clubs. “The talent at the National Team Championships has always been at the highest level and this year will be no different,” said Bratcher. “We’re bringing in an extremely talented field of teams that are all eager to get on the field, so we’re expecting a thrilling few weeks of competition.”

HOW TO BECOME A USA BASEBALL COACH PA RT O N E : T H E H A N D S H A K E
B Y A L E C S C E R C Y, S P E C I A L T O U S A B A S E B A L L You go to a USA Baseball national team identification event. You play your best. You get noticed. You get invited to the chance of a lifetime: An opportunity to represent your country as a player on the USA Baseball national team. That’s the common path for a player. But what about the coaches for the USA Baseball national teams? A coach cannot go 8-for-19 with three home runs over the course of a weekend tournament. So, what do they do? What is their path? How do you become a coach for USA Baseball? It is a question we get asked a lot. The answer: Honestly, there is no “path” for the best coaches in the country to carefully weave through, marking off accomplishments from a cultivated list in order to get closer to their coaching dreams. The answer is more complex than that. There are any number of ways someone with the right heart, attitude and abilities can 14

end up wearing U-S-A across their chest and, hopefully, a gold medal around their neck. For proof of this, look no further than the 2018 15U World Cup champion coaching staff. Four men with wildly different paths to our coaching ranks found themselves all sharing a medal stand in Panama.
THE HANDSHAKE: MANAGER JASON MAXWELL
Jason Maxwell played professional baseball for 12 years, started a high school program from scratch in Tennessee, and went on to lead Team USA to their firstever U-15 Baseball World Cup title. But how did Maxwell get his start with USA Baseball? From the way he tells it: A handshake. “You never know what a handshake will mean down the road.” This is a philosophy Jason lives by and instills in his two sons. And it is a philosophy that set Jason on
a path to what he calls his ‘number one without a doubt’ personal achievement in the game of baseball. The handshake in this instance was with Jan Weisberg. Jan is the head coach of a college program that was recruiting one of Jason’s high school players back in 2013. That college program was Birmingham-Southern, which was also the alma mater of Brooks Webb, former Senior Director of Baseball Operations at USA Baseball. One day, Brooks called his former college manager asking if he knew of any coaches that showed the heart and ability to join the newest crop of USA Baseball coaches. Jan sent him to Jason Maxwell. Jason started his USA Baseball coaching career where most coaches do, working as a member of the task force at the National Team Championships and the National Team Identification Series. Hundreds of kids packed into ballparks across the country, all with the same goal as each other, all with the same goal as Jason Maxwell: A chance to represent the United States of America. His passion for the game and his drive to help these young athletes reach their potential was obvious to everyone around him. Jason was suddenly at any event USA Baseball needed an extra hand. After three short years, he was named to his first national team staff, and traveled to Japan as an assistant coach with the 2016 15U National Team. The team placed third in the tournament. But Jason left wanting more. In 2017 Jason was named the field manager for the 14U National Team Development Program (NTDP). A group of young players stacked with talent. Enough to have a chance at history, to be the first team in U.S.
history to bring home the U-15 World Cup championship the following year. Over the next two summers, Jason led that group of young athletes, helped them develop and earned their trust. And in 2018, history was made. “When you are standing in another country with a gold medal around your neck, and the national anthem starts to play,” Jason remembered. “There is nothing like it.” From a handshake, to a phone call, to a gold medal. Now if this sounds like fate, and something impossible for an everyday coach, that is not the case. Yes, Jason played big league baseball, but Jason was the head coach of a team coming off a 13-16 record when he received that phone call. A moment in which his first instinct was ‘Just let it ring. We aren’t going to be in the National High School Invitational’ when he saw that his caller ID read “USA Baseball.” But the call was for him. Because his passion, drive and ability were obvious to anyone around him. Obvious to Jan Weisberg, then obvious to Brooks Webb and eventually obvious to new Senior Director of Baseball Operations at USA Baseball, Ashley Bratcher, who served as the program director for the world championship 15U National Team in 2018. “Jason epitomizes the character, leadership and personal qualities we look for to be a USA Baseball national team coach,” said Bratcher. “In every facet of his life, both personal and professional, he does everything the right way and is a perfect representation of our game, our organization and our country. “Without a doubt, he was truly an obvious and deserving choice to lead a USA Baseball national team and it was an honor to witness his direct impact on our athletes and his fellow coaches on the 2018 squad. It surprised nobody whom has ever had the privilege of working with him that he led our 15U National Team to unprecedented heights, winning its first-ever world championship title.” Every coach makes connections every day. And you never know what a handshake will mean down the road. And you’ll never know when the right impression on the right person might lead to glory. Jason Maxwell’s story is the first of a four-part series on “How to Become a USA Baseball Coach.” The remaining three stories of the series will be released on USABaseball.com and @USABaseball on Facebook, Instgram and Twitter.

Last year, the Women’s National Team set the ball rolling toward the completion of a mission and in 2020 it will look to cross the finish line with a gold medal. Since earning the title of world champions in back-to-back World Cups in 2004 and 2006, Team USA hasn’t claimed the top prize in World Cup competition, instead winning two silver medals (2012, 2014) and two bronze medals (2008, 2010) in the ensuing tournaments. But after a dominating performance at the COPABE Women’s PanAmerican Championships in 2019, the program is poised to take the world by storm in 2020. The U.S. finished the 2019 Pan-American Championships with a perfect 7-0 record while outscoring opponents 124-20 to qualify for the 2020 World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Women’s Baseball World Cup. The gold medal marked the program’s first since winning the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games, but last year’s victory was just step one toward the ultimate goal of bringing a world championship back to the U.S. And now that qualification is secure, the 2020 Women’s National Team will travel to
Mexico where the 2020 WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup will be held from November 12-21 to finish the mission they started with a bang last year.

In 2020, the 15U National Team will get to do something it has never before had the opportunity to do: Team USA will defend its world championship at the World Baseball Softball Confederation U-15 Baseball World Cup. Since the U-15 World Cup’s inception in 2014, the 15U National Team had claimed a silver and a bronze but it wasn’t until the 2018 season that the U.S. finally claimed the ultimate prize and came home with its first-ever world championship. The program followed that historic season with another strong showing in 2019 when the red, white and blue went 8-1 at the WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup Americas Qualifier en route to a gold medal and a chance to defend its 2018 victory. Now, the 15U National Team will travel to Mexico to compete in the 2020 edition of the World Cup which is currently set to take place October 30-November 8. 2 0 2 0 N AT I O N A L T E A M C H A M P I O N S H I P S

Almora earned his first world championship title with the 16U National Team in 2009 after the U.S. defeated Cuba 7-6 in the championship game of the IBAF World Youth Championships in Taichung, Taiwan. Starting all 11 games for the red, white and blue, he finished with a .356 batting average (16-for-45) and three doubles and 15 RBIs.

Almora made his debut with the Chicago Cubs at the age of 22 in a game against the Phillies on June 7, 2016. Since then, he has been a mainstay on the 25-man roster in Wrigleyville, holding a career .274 (327for-1194) average and being a stalwart defensively in the outfield. The extra hitter must be indicated in the line-up as the “EH”. The “EH” will be treated as any other started and cannot be eliminated during the course of the game. The “EH” can exchange positions with other defensive players in the lineup. A player that starts the game as an “EH” or becomes an “EH” at any time there-
after, is not required to remain solely as the “EH”. The starting batting order must be following in order. Changing of the “starting batting order” once the game begins is strictly prohibited.

PITCHING RULES • In accordance with USA Baseball’s assimilation of Pitch Smart guidelines, the National Team Championships will use a hard pitch count as the standard for setting pitcher use limitations for the 2020 tournament. The 2020 Pitch Smart guidelines can be found on page 2 of the rules document.
PENALTY FOR VIOLATION OF PITCHER USE LIMITATION RULES • If a pitcher is found to have exceeded his allowed numbers of pitches during a game, the illegal pitching situation will be rectified immediately and the incoming pitcher will be permitted as many warm up pitches as the umpire deems necessary prior to resuming the game. The Technical Committee will review the infraction and reserves the right to suspend the manager for the next game if the infraction is deemed a purposeful breech of the rules. The Technical Committee will be comprised of the USA Baseball Tournament Director, Umpire-in-Chief, one USA Baseball Site Supervisor and one member of the USA Baseball Task Force. • If a pitcher is found to have exceeded his allowed pitches for a game after the game is completed, the manager may be suspended for the next tour-
nament game. The Technical Committee will review the infraction and reserves the right to suspend the manager for the next tournament game and one additional game if the infraction is deemed a purposeful breech of the rules. • In either case, the pitcher in question will not receive any direct penalty, but will be made to adhere to the prescribed days of rest based on the number of pitches at the time of the infraction. The team in question will not receive any direct penalty (beyond penalization of the manager), but will continually be made to adhere to the prescribed pitch count rules for the remainder of the event.
REPORTING • USA Baseball official scorers will be responsible for the official pitch count at each field. • An aggregate report for all teams in the tournament will be distributed electronically at the completion of each day’s games to the team contact on record. The pitch count monitored and kept in the tower is the only official pitch count that will be used. Managers or coaches pitch counts are NOT official, but they are welcome to periodically check with the official scorer to ensure their count is correct. The official scorekeeper will communicate the pitch count at the beginning of each inning or as needed. • Should a pitch count be protested, the protesting team must present an official score book or digital score keeping application to the Site Supervisor and Tournament Director. • The pitch count kept by the tower can be overturned if both the Site Supervisor and Tournament Director come to the conclusion that a mistake was made on behalf of USA Baseball’s scorekeeper. The new pitch count

will be recorded and reflected in the following day’s pitch count report.
not pitch in any subsequent game that day. (For example, a pitcher who is in the game at the time the game is suspended and resumed the next day may not pitch in the subsequent regularly scheduled game that same day.)
SUSPENDED GAMES • For purposes of applying the pitcher use limitations in the event a team plays twice on a single day because a prior game was either postponed or suspended, the following rules apply: • The per-game total pitch maximums (but not mandatory rest) shall be deemed to be “reset” for the resumption of the suspended game. (For example, a pitcher who has thrown less than 30 pitches when a game is suspended may remain in the game and is not required to be removed prior to 95/105 pitches the next day (14U/15U/16U: 95, 17U: 105).); • A player who is a team’s pitcher at the time a game is suspended and then becomes subject to a mandatory rest day at the time the suspended game is resumed shall be removed from the game at the time the game is resumed. (For example, a pitcher who is in the game at the time the game is suspended and who has thrown 31 or more pitches in that game may not pitch in the resumption of the suspended game the next day.); • A pitcher who must rest for a day must rest for all games on that day (i.e., rest during a postponed or resumed suspended game shall not be deemed to satisfy a mandatory rest day if there is a subsequent game on the same day). (For example, a pitcher who is in the game at the time the game is suspended and who has thrown 31 or more pitches in that game may not pitch in either the resumption of the suspended game or any subsequent game that day.); • A pitcher who remains in at the resumption of the suspended or postponed game may
DOUBLEHEADERS • The second game of a scheduled doubleheader will not serve as a rest day for pitchers having thrown in the first game of the day. (For example, a pitcher who has thrown 31 or more pitches in the first game of the day may not pitch in any subsequent game that day and is subject to the appropriate number of rest days based on the total pitches thrown.) • A pitcher who has thrown 1-30 pitches is • eligible to throw in any subsequent game that day, however, he will still be limited to the daily max of 95/105 pitches on the day. (For example, a 15U pitcher who has thrown 20 pitches in game one may throw in the second game that day, but is limited to only 75 pitches in that given game. At that point, the pitcher will be subject to the appropriate number of rest days based on the total pitches thrown that day, which in this case would be 4 days (76+ pitches).) • Due to the nature of the tournament format, the USA Baseball Operations Staff will provide each coach with an updated pitch count sheet as soon as possible prior to the start of their second game of the day on days where a doubleheader is scheduled.
