NHSI 2022 BY THE NUMBERS by BRAD YOUNG 1,096 days When Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.) and Hanover (Mechanicsville, Va.) take the field on April 6 to open the 2022 National High School Invitational (NHSI) presented by the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance, it will have been 1,096 days since the last NHSI game. That game just happened to be a 6-2 Orange Lutheran victory over Harvard-Westlake School (Studio City, Calif.) to give the Lancers the NHSI championship title. Talk about a lengthy title defense. But wait, did we mention that it was Orange Lutheran’s third consecutive NHSI title? In 2017, the Lancers dispatched Dana Hill High School (Dana Point, Calif.) 3-2 in the championship game, and in 2018, Orange Lutheran overcame the storybook run by the hometown team, Green Hope High School (Cary, N.C.), to win its second championship with a 9-3 victory in the finale. Suddenly, that previously mentioned lengthy title defense seems brief. Let’s recalculate. 1,831 days. Five years and five days. Sixty months and five days. That is how long the Orange Lutheran Lancers have been the defending NHSI champions. As if it could not get more astonishing, allow us to throw out another number: 2,932. That is how many days it has been since Orange Lutheran lost a baseball game at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina; a 4-1 loss to Venice High School (Venice, Fla.). The Lancers are on an unprecedented winning streak at the NHSI. They have won 13 consecutive games and outscored their opponents 75-22. And of those 13 games, only four have been one-run games. But here is another number to consider: 15. That is the number of top prep baseball programs in the country who are coming to Cary, North Carolina, looking to dethrone the champs. The 2022 NHSI will once again bring together a collection of the premier programs and draft prospects from across the nation. Will Orange Lutheran leave Cary with a fourth title? Or will the field prove too much to handle for the Lancers this year? Here is what you need to know about this year’s event by the numbers:

2022 NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL INVITATIONAL
One hundred and sixteen participants in the 2022 NHSI have already committed to playing Division I baseball. Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.) leads the way with 13 athletes on their roster committed to a DI program, followed by Hamilton (Chandler, Ariz.) and Marjory Stoneman Douglas (Parkland, Fla.) with 11 each, and Buford (Buford, Ga.), Huntington Beach (Huntington Beach, Calif.), and Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.) with 10 apiece. *Numbers do not reflect currently uncommitted athletes.
Two of the 16 teams at the 2022 NHSI are defending state champions. Marjory Stoneman Douglas (Parkland, Fla.) won the FHSAA 7A State Championship last season with a 5-1 victory over Spruce Creek High School. It was the Eagles’ second state championship in the past six seasons, winning the title in 2016 over Christopher Columbus High School. The First Academy (Orlando, Fla.) won the FHSAA Class 3A championship with a 3-0 victory over 11-time state champion Miami Westminster Christian. It was the first state championship in the Royals’ program history. Ten of the 16 teams in the 2022 NHSI have combined to win 30 state championships. McQuaid Jesuit (Rochester, N.Y.) and The First Academy (Orlando, Fla.) have both won one state championship. Bishop Verot (Fort Myers, Fla.), D. H. Conley (Greenville, N.C.), and Marjory Stoneman Douglas (Parkland, Fla.) have all won a pair of titles. Buford (Buford, Ga.), Hanover (Mechanicsville, Va.), and Regis Jesuit (Aurora, Colo.) each have won three state crowns. Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.) has won six state championships between 1979 and 2008. But leading the way with seven state championships in their history is Hamilton (Chandler, Ariz.). Not only do their seven state titles lead all participants, but all have come since 2003, including four in the last seven seasons.
Three past champions will return to the USA Baseball National Training Complex for the 2022 NHSI. Huntington Beach (Huntington Beach, Calif.) won the 2016 NHSI championship before Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.) reeled off three consecutive titles in 2017, 2018, and 2019. The First Academy (Orlando, Fla.) won the event in 2014 and is currently the only non-California school to win a National High School Invitational crown.
Seven programs in the 16-team field have participated in the NHSI before 2022: Bishop Verot (Fort Myers, Fla.), Hamilton (Chandler, Ariz.), Hanover (Mechanicsville, Va.), Huntington Beach (Huntington Beach, Calif.), Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.), Regis Jesuit (Aurora, Colo.), and The First Academy (Orlando, Fla.). The seven programs have 16 combined appearances before the 2022 event and 44 total victories. Orange Lutheran and Huntington Beach lead all teams in the history of the NHSI in total victories with 15 (15-4) and 12 (12-4), respectively. Seven world champions will enter the USA Baseball National Training Complex for the 2022 NHSI. Four members of the 2017 12U National Team that won the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-12 Baseball World Cup in Taiwan will reunite in Cary. The 2017 12U team combined to outscore its opponents 107-43 in its nine games in Taiwan, led by Danny Arambula (Yucaipa), Owen Egan (Yucaipa), Ben Reiland (Orange Lutheran), and All-World selection Ralphy Velazquez (Huntington Beach). Karson Bowen (Orange Lutheran), Matthew Matthijs (D. H. Conley), and Logan Saloman (Hamilton) were part of the first-ever world championship for the USA Baseball 15U National Team program. The trio combined to lead the U.S. to an 8-1 overall record in Panama, defeating the host country in the gold medal game, 7-1, in front of a sold-out crowd in the finale of the WBSC 2018 U-15 Baseball World Cup.
Lutheran), Oliver Santos (Orange Lutheran), and Riley Stanford (Buford) have also donned the red, white, and blue in international competition. The 2022 NHSI field includes one reigning National Player of the Year. Dylan Lesko (Buford) was named the Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year in 2021 after leading the Buford Wolves to a 32-2 record. Getting it done on both sides of the ball, Lesko went 11-0 on the mound and held a 0.35 ERA with 112 strikeouts in 60 total innings. Offensively, he boasted a .417 batting average with an OPS of 1.054 and tallied 25 RBIs.
The 2022 NHSI rosters include 12 USA Baseball national team alums. In addition to the seven world champions listed above, Mason Neville (Basic Academy), Mikey Romero (Orange Lutheran), Louis Rodriguez (Orange 2022 NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL INVITATIONAL

BREAKING DOWN THE NHSI 2022 BRACKET by JOSH SPITZ
POD 1
Experienced teams, defending champions, and a tournament newcomer make up Pod 1 of the 2022 National High School Invitational (NHSI) presented by the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance. Two teams in the pod have combined to win exactly half of the tournament’s championships, with Orange Lutheran High School (Orange, Calif) owning the past three titles and The First Academy (Orlando, Fla.) earning one of its own in 2014. Additionally, Hanover High School (Hanover, Va.) returns to the event for the second time, and Basic Academy of International Studies (Henderson, Nev.) will make its first appearance at the NHSI in 2022. The Lancers are the team to beat until proven otherwise at the NHSI, having won 13 consecutive games at the event. Owning a 15-4 all-time record in the tournament, Orange Lutheran has not lost an NHSI game since 2014. The program most recently knocked off Harvard-Westlake School (Los Angeles, Calif.) in the 2019 title game. Orange Lutheran not only brings high school experience to the NHSI, but plenty of international experience as well. The Lancers feature a tournament-high five USA Baseball alumni on their roster that have combined to win seven gold medals in international play for the U.S. Highlighting the list of alums is four-time Team USA member and TCU commit Karson Bowen, who has played for the 12U, 15U, and 18U national teams. Bowen’s career in the red, white, and blue began with the 2016 12U National Team before featuring two stints and a pair of gold medals with the 15U National Team in 2018 and 2019. Most recently,
Alyson Boyer Rode

Bowen played for the 2021 18U National Team in a friendship series against Canada. Bowen is joined by fellow Team USA alums Ben Reiland, Louis Rodriguez, Mikey Romero, and Oliver Santos. Reiland, who plays both infield and outfield, is a two-time alum who won gold medals with the 2017 12U National Team and the 2019 15U National Team. Rodriguez, a TCU commit and three-time member of the stars and stripes, has had a strong international career highlighted by being named World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-15 Baseball World Cup Americas Qualifier MVP in 2019. LSU-bound Romero played for both the 12U and 15U National Teams, earning gold with the 15U squad in 2019, while Santos, a Duke commit, made his Team USA debut with the 18U National Team in 2021. The Lancers have had the most recent tournament success but they aren’t the only program in Pod 1 to have won a title in Cary. The First Academy, which will make its third tournament appearance, beat Clovis High School (Clovis, Calif.) and took home the NHSI crown in 2014. The program is 5-3 all-time in the event, most recently competing in 2018. They will rely on right-handed pitcher and infielder Ben Barrett in 2022, who will be one of the tournament’s most dangerous players as a standout on the mound and at the plate. Barrett batted .333 in The First Academy’s state championship season in 2021, cranking a pair of homers and driving in 27 runs. The Florida State commit also made 16 appearances on the mound last season, going 10-1 with a 1.62 ERA and striking out 101 batters in 60.2 innings pitched. Basic Academy may not have any NHSI experience but is coming off a strong season in 2021. The program went 13-3 a season ago, making it to the third round of the NIAA 5A Southern Region Playoffs. Team USA alum and Arkansas commit Mason Neville, who owns a silver medal with the stars and stripes, will be a key force in Basic Academy’s lineup. Neville, an outfielder, started all nine games and helped the 12U National Team to a second-place finish at the 2016 COPABE Pan Am “A” Championships. Hanover returns to the NHSI for the first time since 2018. The Hawks finished strong after a slow start in their tournament debut, falling in their first two games before rattling off a pair of victories. The program, which is coming off a trip to the Virginia State 4A title game in 2021, returns
much of its talent from a season ago. That includes ace southpaw Levi Huesman, a hard-throwing left-hander who can go toe-to-toe with any lineup in the NHSI field. Huesman is committed to pitch at Coastal Carolina. Pod 1 will feature a pair of intriguing opening round matchups. In the first game of the tournament, Orange Lutheran will begin its title defense against Hanover. The Lancers might see Huesman in the opener, which could be a difficult test for their prospect-heavy lineup. Orange Lutheran’s roster features eight Division I commits who will be locked in on the quest for their fourth straight title, and the reigning champs could look to Rodriguez or Santos on the mound in this matchup. The First Academy returns every pitching win from its 2021 state championship team and will bring plenty of depth in a key position to their opening round matchup with Basic Academy. We’ll certainly see Barrett at the plate, but he also might be on the mound against a Basic Academy squad that features a pair of SEC commits in Neville and Ty Southisene (Tennessee). This game will feature many experienced players at key positions, which should lead to a clean and competitive battle to kick off the tournament.

POD 2
Pod 2 of the 2022 National High School Invitational (NHSI) presented by the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance features three programs new to the event and one returning squad. Regis Jesuit High School (Aurora, Colo.) makes its second NHSI appearance, while D.H. Conley High School (Greeneville, N.C.), Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School (Parkland, Fla.), and Yucaipa High School (Yucaipa, Calif.) are all making their tournament debuts this year. The only program in this pod with NHSI experience, Regis Jesuit made its first appearance at the tournament in 2014. The Raiders had a strong NHSI debut and reached the semifinals before losing, 6-2, to the eventual 2014 champion, The First Academy. This year the team will look to make another deep run in, relying on Dallas Macias to play a key role in the offensive production. Macias posted a dominant season in 2021, batting .491 (27-for-55) and hitting four homers. The Oregon State commit notched four doubles Alyson Boyer Rode and had 15 RBIs while playing the infield for the Raiders last year. D.H. Conley, who serves as the host team in this year’s tournament, will look to build on recent success. The Vikings have gone a combined 43-9 over the past three campaigns and boast a roster with several top college commits. East Carolina commit Dixon Williams was named 2021 Eastern Carolina 3A/4A Player of the Year and poses a serious threat in the Vikings’ lineup, while Team USA alum Matthew Matthijs serves as the ace of the staff. Matthijis, a University of North Carolina commit, pitched for the 2019 15U National Team that won gold at the World Baseball

Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-15 Baseball World Cup Americas Qualifier. Marjory Stoneman Douglas is coming off a Florida 7A state championship a season ago and is well-equipped to make another run at the title in 2022. The Eagles’ roster is loaded with SEC commits, including Roman Anthony (Ole Miss), Chris Arroyo (Florida), and Jake Clemente (Florida). Anthony, an outfielder, batted .362 for the Eagles in 2021, cranking five homers to go along with 25 stolen bases. Arroyo is a two-way player who went 9-0 with a 1.44 ERA while batting .333 last season, and Clemente, who is also a two-way player, hit .360 with 34 RBIs and pitched to a 1.58 ERA in 17.2 innings pitched in 2021. Yucaipa returns most of its core from a season ago, which includes a pair of Team USA alums. Owen Egan twice played for the 12U National Team, helping the U.S. to a silver medal at the 2016 COPABE Pan Am "A" Championships. He was then named to the team once more the following year, making two starts on the mound
and batting .286 (6-for-21) as the stars and stripes earned gold at the 2017 WBSC U-12 Baseball World Cup. Danny Arambula was Egan’s teammate on that world champion 2017 squad, playing in nine games and adding two homers to help the red, white, and blue secure gold. At the 2022 NHSI, the Thunderbirds’ lineup will also have top bats Jacob Reimer, who hit .440 in 2021, and Luke Scherrer, who posted a .391 average last season. The first opening round matchup of Pod 2 features a double NHSI debut as both teams hit the field in Cary for the first time on April 6. D.H. Conley might give the ball to Matthijis on the mound in the opener, while Stoneman Douglas has a pair of aces – Arroyo and Christian Rodriguez – who combined to go 17-0 on the mound last season. Whoever gets the start for Stoneman Douglas will have to face a tough D.H. Conley lineup that includes East Carolina-bound Dixon Williams and Riley Williams. Two loaded offenses will battle in the pod’s second opening round game, which pins Regis Jesuit against Yucaipa. Macias and Isaac Wacshmann lead the Regis Jesuit offense against Yucaipa’s powerful lineup, paced by Arambula, Reimer, and Scherrer. Returning arm Brooks Gerig could get the start on the bump for Regis Jesuit, while Yucaipa might send Carter Herrera to the mound after he won seven games in 2021.
POD 3
All four teams in Pod 3 of the 2022 National High School Invitational (NHSI) presented by the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance will make their first tournament appearance in the event’s ninth iteration. Buford High School (Buford, Ga.), Don Bosco Preparatory School (Ramsey, N.J.), Servite High School (Servite, Calif.), and St. Johns Country Day School (Orange Park, Fla.) all come to Cary looking to make some noise in their tournament debuts. Buford arrives in Cary with a starstudded roster featuring one of the nation’s top arms in Dylan Lesko. The right-handed Vanderbilt commit had a lights-out junior campaign for the Wolves in 2021, allowing just three earned runs all season with 112 strikeouts en route to being named 2021 Gatorade Player of the Year. Team USA alum Riley Stanford, a two-way player committed to Georgia Tech who struck out four batters over three innings of work in the 2021 18U
National Team’s friendship series against Canada last summer, adds depth to Buford’s rotation. Stanford is also a threat at the plate and is joined by fellow Georgia Tech commits Brent Baughcum, Jackson Gaspard, and Ethan Murray to give Buford a formidable lineup to go with a powerful rotation. Don Bosco brings solid rotation depth and a plethora of experienced arms who are committed to play at the Power Five level. Caden Dana (Kentucky), Kevin Jaxel (Virginia), Zach Stichweh (Maryland), and Pablo Santos (Rutgers) are all impact pitchers for Don Bosco, giving the Ironmen a strong chance in their tournament debut. The program is also coming off a standout season in 2021, making it to the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) state semifinals. Servite makes its first appearance at the NHSI with a roster set to compete. The Friars are off to an 8-3 start in 2022, having been led at the plate by Roman Martin. The UCLA commit is batting .500 through the Friars’ first 11 games, adding a home run and seven RBIs. Jarrod Hocking, another UCLA commit, is an important piece for Servite and has a .367 average with six RBIs so far this season. On the mound, San Diego State commit Xavier Cardenas has a 1.50 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 9.1 innings pitched so far this year. 2021 was a strong year for St. Johns Country Day, who finished as Florida state runners-up after a 24-7 season. The Spartans will certainly hand the ball to ace Brad Hodges at some point during the NHSI, as he pitched to a 1.59 ERA a season ago. The southpaw struck out 74 batters in 44.0 innings and is committed to pitch at Virginia. Meanwhile, fellow ACC commit Jordan Taylor (Florida State) was a dynamic bat in the Spartans’ lineup in 2021, hitting .406 (39-for-96) with five home runs to go along with 25 RBIs. Taylor also scored 30 runs and stole 10 bases last season. In a game with several intriguing pitching matchup possibilities, St. Johns Country Day will take on Servite in the first round. Hodges could potentially get the start for the Spartans and might face Cardenas, but there are also plenty of other options to take the ball in the opener. Whoever is on the mound for St. Johns Country Day will have to face a Servite team that is loaded with talent, including a trio of UCLA commits in Hocking, Martin, and Chris Grothues. Buford has several options at its disposal in its opening round matchup against Don Bosco Prep, which has a number of Power Five arms as well. Buford’s Lesko is among the highest-rated pitchers in the country and would be a difficult matchup for the Ironmen, but with strong arms of their own like Dana and Jaxel to match, it’s bound to be an intriguing contest. Kaden Martin, who transferred to Buford for his senior season, is a bat to watch for the Wolves while Don Bosco’s Santos offers a variety of tools at the plate for the Ironmen.

POD 4
Pod 4 of the 2022 National High School Invitational (NHSI) presented by the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance is highlighted by the return of 2016 champions, Huntington Beach High School (Huntington Beach, Calif.), along with two more past NHSI competitors and one newcomer. Bishop Verot High School (Fort Myers, Fla.) and Hamilton High School (Chandler, Ariz.) are back after participating in past editions of the event, while McQuaid Jesuit High School (Rochester, N.Y.) will make its NHSI debut in 2022. Huntington Beach arrives in Cary for the 2022 tournament with four appearances and a title already under its belt. After making their NHSI debut in 2015, the Oilers captured the trophy the following year with a 7-2 championship game win over Chaminade Prep (Los Angeles, Calif.). The program is well positioned to build upon its 12-4 overall tournament record with a lineup that includes two-time Team USA alum and Arizona State commit Ralphy Velazquez, who played for the 12U National Team in both 2016 and 2017. The utilityman combined to hit .545 over the two summers and help the U.S. win a gold medal at the 2017 World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-12 Baseball World Cup. Bishop Verot returns to Cary for the second time this spring after first appearing in the NHSI in 2014. The Vikings went 3-1 in their tournament debut eight

years ago, dropping their opening round matchup before winning three consecutive games to cap off the tournament. Bishop Verot has one of the youngest stars in this year’s event in two-way player Carter Smith, a freshman who is a mainstay in the lineup and can also contribute on the mound. The Vikings also have senior catcher Kevin RisCassi, a Flagler College commit who serves as a key piece both at the plate and behind it. Competing in the NHSI for the third time overall and first since 2017, Hamilton High School brings a 5-3 overall tournament record to the event in 2022. The Huskies made their tournament debut in 2013 and put together a 3-1 record before going 2-2 with a pair of shutout wins in 2017. Hamilton has depth at key spots, featuring USA Baseball alum and Arizona State commit Logan Saloman as a two-way player. Saloman pitched for the 2019 15U National Team and led the staff with 12.0 innings pitched and 16 strikeouts en route to a gold medal at the WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup Americas Qualifier. He is joined in Hamilton’s rotation by right-hander Kole Klecker, a TCU commit who posted a 1.72 ERA with a perfect 5-0 record a season ago. McQuaid Jesuit makes its first trip to the NHSI in 2022 after posting a 16-5 record a season ago. While the Knights don’t have any NHSI experience, they will bring a veteran-laden squad looking to make some noise. The program returns 18 players – including seven starters – from their strong 2021 campaign, including a trio of Division I commits in Edward Hall (Davidson), Daniel McAliney (Binghamton), and Will Taylor (Wofford) on the mound. Aiden Stewart, a middle infielder who is committed to Siena, offers a strong glove and a tough out at the plate. Although both teams have past NHSI experience, youth will be on display in the opening round matchup between Bishop Verot and Hamilton. Smith is productive both on the mound and at the plate for Bishop Verot and will be a key to the Vikings’ success in the tournament. Hamilton’s rotation, which returns 15 of its 20 pitching wins from a season ago, will be tasked with holding Bishop Verot’s offense in check. Gavin Turley, who batted .355 with four homers a season ago, will be a threat at the plate for the Huskies, while RisCassi and Smith will lead Bishop Verot’s lineup. An experienced program takes on a newcomer in the second matchup of Pod 4, with Huntington Beach playing against McQuaid Jesuit. Veteran pitching arms Ben Jacobs and Jack Smith provide experience atop Huntington’s rotation, and bats like Nicholas Dumesnil and Velazquez will make the Oilers a tough out. But McQuaid’s 18 returners will help them match Huntington’s veteran experience, and its trio of pitchers at the top of the rotation could give the 2016 champs a run for their money.

NHSI PAST CHAMPIONS by EMILY FEDEWA
2012: MATER DEI
Mater Dei High School (Santa Ana, Calif.) earned the inaugural National High School Invitational (NHSI) presented by the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance championship in 2012 with a 3-2 walk-off victory over Harvard-Westlake School (Studio City, Calif.). Despite the Wolverines jumping out to an early 2-0 lead, Mater Dei rallied with two solo home runs in the fourth and seventh innings, respectively, to send the game to extra innings. After holding Harvard-Westlake scoreless in the top of the eighth, the Monarchs used a bases-loaded single in the bottom half to secure the first-ever NHSI title in dramatic fashion.
2013: MATER DEI
In a rematch of the 2012 National High School Invitational (NHSI) presented by the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance, Mater Dei High School (Santa Ana, Calif.) and Harvard-Westlake School (Studio City, Calif.) once again went head-to-head with Mater Dei defending its title with a 4-0 victory. In the second edition of this matchup, the Monarchs got on the board first and never looked back. The team plated its first run in the top of the third before adding two more in the sixth and one in the seventh for the final 4-0 score to secure its second consecutive championship. Alyson Boyer Rode
2014: THE FIRST ACADEMY
After Mater Dei High School (Santa Ana, Calif.) repeated as National High School Invitational (NHSI) presented by the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance champions in the first two editions of the event, The First Academy (Orlando, Fla.) became just the second team to claim the trophy with a 5-3 defeat of Clovis High School (Clovis, Calif.). 20
2022 NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL INVITATIONAL
After a slow start on offense for both squads, The First Academy broke onto the scoreboard first in the contest with back-to-back RBI doubles for a 2-0 advantage in the third. Clovis responded in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead before The First Academy was able to rally two innings later with three runs of its own to make it 5-3. The Royals held Clovis off in the seventh to secure its victory and claim the 2014 NHSI title.
2015: SAN CLEMENTE
San Clemente High School (San Clemente, Calif.) used a strong run in 2015 to claim the National High School Invitational (NHSI) presented by the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance championship. The squad outscored opponents 17-9 in its first three games of the event to secure its spot in the title game where it took on College Park (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) for the trophy. In the final, San Clemente opened the scoring in the second and plated runs in every inning that followed to remain in control throughout the contest. College Park broke through in the fourth and the fifth but couldn’t overcome the deficit as San Clemente cruised to an 8-3 victory and the title. The game marked the largest margin of victory in the history of the event’s championship game to that point.
2016: HUNTINGTON BEACH
After falling in the semifinals of the 2015 National High School Invitational (NHSI) presented by the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance to eventual champion San Clemente High School (San Clemente, Calif.), Huntington Beach High School (Huntington Beach, Calif.) came roaring back one year later to claim the 2016 title. The team outscored its opponents 30-15 en route to the championship, including defeating Chaminade Prep (Los Angeles, Calif.) 7-2 in the final. Chaminade broke onto
the scoreboard first though, taking an early 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI single. But Huntington Beach wasted no time responding as the offense came alive in the bottom of the second for four runs before adding one in the fifth and two more in the sixth for a strong 7-1 advantage. Chaminade got one run back in the seventh but couldn’t get anything else as Huntington Beach finished off the 7-2 victory and secured its NHSI championship.
2017: ORANGE LUTHERAN
Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.) started its dominant run at the National High School Invitational (NHSI) presented by the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance with its first championship in 2017. After victories over Merritt Island High School (Merritt Island, Fla.), Trinity Christian Academy (Jacksonville, Fla.), and South Hills High School (West Covina, Calif.), the Lancers faced off against Dana Hills High School (Dana Point, Calif.) for the NHSI title. The two teams traded runs in the second and third innings for a 2-2 tie that would hold until the sixth inning when Orange Lutheran finally broke through with a sacrifice fly that made it 3-2 in its favor. Dana Hills tried to put together rally in the seventh with two hits that fell short as the Lancers got a double play to end the game and secure their first NHSI championship.
2018: ORANGE LUTHERAN
The 2018 edition of the National High School Invitational (NHSI) presented by the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance featured just the second repeat champion and a historic run to the final. After outscoring opponents 16-4 in its first three games of the event, Green Hope High School (Cary, N.C.) secured its spot in the 2018 NHSI championship game and became the first school from North Carolina to advance into the finals at the NHSI. The team’s opponent was Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.) which was looking to defend its 2017 NHSI title and become just the second team in event history to repeat as champions. Both offenses were quiet through the first three innings before the Lancers finally broke the game wide open with six runs throughout the fourth and fifth innings for a 6-0 lead. The Falcons responded in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit in half but it wouldn’t be enough as Orange Lutheran added three more insurance runs to claim a 9-3 victory and its second consecutive NHSI title.
2019: ORANGE LUTHERAN
In its seven-year history, the National High School Invitational (NHSI) presented by the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance had seen just two teams defend their titles in the event. But never had there been a threepeat – until 2019. Coming into the most recent edition of the tournament, Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.) had won nine straight NHSI games and hadn’t dropped a contest since 2014, and the Lancers picked right back up in 2019 where they had left off. They cruised into the championship game outscoring opponents 22-3 to take on Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, Calif.). But HarvardWestlake had also defeated its three opponents by wide margins to reach the final, outscoring them 16-1 with two shutouts, and the Wolverines were looking for redemption after falling in both the 2012 and 2013 NHSI championship games. The Lancers proved to be too strong though and they wasted no time in their title defense, plating a pair of runs in the first inning to open the scoring and never looking back. They would add three more runs before Harvard-Westlake got on the board with two runs of its own in the fifth to cut the deficit to three but a final insurance run for the Lancers in the sixth sealed the 6-2 victory and Orange Lutheran’s third NHSI title. 2022 NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL INVITATIONAL
