Volunteer VOLUNTEER REGISTRATION - Volunteer Management Information System (VMIS) 1. Using Internet Explorer, go to www.myarmyonesource.com. If you are not already registered on this site, click on Register at the top right. Click on the Join Now button in the middle of that page on the right. Complete the registration form and select USAG-Miami in the Military Community Affiliation drop-box under HQ IMCOM. 2. Once registered, you can log in. Click on the Volunteer Tools tab located in the upper right hand corner of the webpage. 3. Click on Volunteer Profile. Complete all requested information in the volunteer profile. Be sure to enter the last four digits only of your social security number and save the page. This will ensure you are a registered volunteer. 4. You can use the Volunteer Opportunities tab to locate volunteer opportunities on the installation. If you want to volunteer off the installation, click on the Army Community Service link provides a generic volunteer position description – Special Projects Volunteer – for all off-post volunteer opportunities. 5. The cadets and cadre of the following Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) high schools are seeking military members of all ranks as services to judge the schools' annual JRTOT color guard and drill team meets Sat 30 Jan, South Plantation HS Drill Meet, Sat 13 Feb, Miami Northwestern SHS Drill Meet, Sat 12 Mar, Miami-Dade State Qualifier Drill Meet at North Miami Beach SHS. Each drill meet requires 20 to 30 volunteer judges (normally 10 competition boxes with one head judge and three field judges per box.) More than 500 cadets from around 20 Miami-Dade and Broward Counties' JROTC schools compete in these drill meets. Uniform is the ACU/BDU equivalent IAW each service regulation. The reporting time is 0645 at the respective school’s JROTC office. Parking is available within school grounds. Volunteers are provided lunch at no cost. You may bring your family. In Miami, for the most part, we don’t have to worry about fraudulent elections or military coups; We can sit down at a decent restaurant in Little Haiti or on Calle Ocho, over food we didn’t have to loot or riot for, then walk out of the venue without fear of shootings, home invasions, humans burned in neighborhood streets, or machete-wielding macoutes. In Haiti, however, chaos is the status quo. Haitian-American authors Mireille Sylvain-David, MJ Fievre, Katia D. Ulysse, and Fabienne Josaphat will share stories of the personal effect of chaos. They will share how hardship can taint, and uniquely beautify a home. These writers will bring to you stories from their Haiti — stories of turmoil, chaos, and confusion, but also of hope and perseverance. Hector Duarte Jr. will moderate the reading.“HECTOR DUARTE JR. (MODERATOR) is a writer out of Miami, Florida. To keep himself financially stable, he teaches English to seventh graders. Since then, M.J. has authored nine books in French. Two years ago, One Moore Book released M.J.’s children’s book, I Am Riding, written in three languages: English, French, and Haitian Creole. A Sky the Color of Chaos is her first book in English. M.J. holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Barry University and an MFA from the Creative Writing program at Florida International University. She taught writing at Nova Middle School in Davie, FL, and is currently a professor at Miami Dade College. KATIA D. ULYSSE was born in Haiti, and moved to the United States as a teen. Her writings have been published in numerous literary journals, including the Caribbean Writer, Meridians, Calabash,Peregrine, and Smartish Pace, among others. Her work has also appeared in The Butterfly’s Wayand Haiti Noir. Her first children’s book, Fabiola Can Count, was published in 2013. Ulysse lives in Maryland with her husband and daughter. When she’s not reading, writing fiction, gardening, or teaching, she blogs on VoicesfromHaiti.com. Drifting is her first book of fiction. FABIENNE JOSAPHAT was born and raised in Haiti, and graduated with an MFA in Creative Writing from Florida International University. She writes fiction, non-fiction and poetry, as well as screenplays. Her work has been featured in The Master’s Review, Grist Journal, Damselfly, Hinchas de Poesia, Off the Coast Journal and The Caribbean Writer. Dancing in the Baron’s Shadow is her first novel with Unnamed Press, forthcoming in February 2016.

Everything Is Broken, Too is the second collaboration between Midtown Publishing and celebrated Miami author John Dufresne, who edited the text. Mr. Dufresne has over a dozen books to his credit. For more than twenty years he has given up his Friday evenings to encourage new writers in Miami. Six of Dufresne's Friday Night Writers were picked for his latest project. Everything s Broken, Too is our second publishing venture, and the stories inside were chosen from the submissions of past and present participants in our Friday Night Writers group. These are stories about what we re afraid of, what we re ashamed of, what we can t forget about, and what we don t want to know about ourselves. They are as compelling as they are unsettling: a boy on the verge of manhood, growing up in rural Alabama in the fifties, falls in love with a girl and with stories; a free-spirited entrepreneurial couple go to work for Hawaiian drug lords and find out they may have stepped into a world a bit more violent than they had bargained for; a man living out his dream retirement in Miami Beach gets devastating news from his physician and determines to face his fate with grace and dignity; a young man comes home to Miami Beach to find his destitute and homeless father and discovers an old sweetheart mired in a life of addiction and prostitution; a trip to the dentist is the pretext for a woman s examination of the marital betrayal that has left her bereft and untethered; a young financial analyst who finds himself out of work, out of love, and out of luck is haunted by the childhood abduction and murder of his brother. About the Editor: John Dufresne has won the Yankee Magazine award for fiction, the Transatlantic Review/Henfield Foundation Award, a PEN Syndicated Fiction award, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. In the Community MOST WELCOME BREEZES: THE STORY OF MARION MANLEY - MARION MANLEY (1893–1984), Sunday, January 31, 2016 - 4:00pm. Miami’s first female architect, successfully maintained an independent architectural practice in South Florida over much of the twentieth century. In this first comprehensive, illustrated work on Manley, Catherine Lynn and Carie Penabad explore the relationship of Manley’s work to her life and to the broader historical moment of which she was a part, including the overall development of the city of Miami. The book catalogs all of Manley’s known work, includes images and plans where available, and provides detailed examinations of what the authors consider to be her best, most emblematic work in each phase of her long career. Best known as one of the designers of the innovative University of Miami campus built just after the Second World War, Manley worked on other public buildings that are less well known, including an addition to the John Ringling Museum in Sarasota. Her residential work is interesting as well: modest and rational, with careful consideration of regional characteristics and construction appropriate to the South Florida landscape. As noted architect Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk remarks in her foreword, “Understanding the reduced circumstances of the provenance of these buildings and their low-tech characteristics such as rooms with cross ventilation, large areas of shaded glass, and the almost tactile relationship to the adjacent landscape, we must admire the legacy of Marion Manley.”

MOLLY SINCLAIR MCCARTNEY worked as a newspaper reporter for more than 30 years, including nearly 15 years at the Washington Post and 10 years at the Miami Herald. In 2012 she was appointed a Woodrow Wilson Public Scholar in Washington D.C. to do the research and interviews needed to finish America's War Machine, the book her husband James McCartney was writing when he died. She has a degree in liberal studies from Georgetown University, where she concentrated on U.S. foreign relations. She was a Nieman Fellow, class of 1978, at Harvard University. She completed that year with a three-month trip around the world and has traveled widely in the Middle East, Asia and Europe ever since. In addition to her newspaper experience, which included reporting on consumer affairs and Corporate America, she worked in public relations in the 1990s at the American Petroleum Institute, the trade association of the major oil companies.
