Sensory Saturdays at Miami Children’s Museum (MCM) One Saturday a month, January 9, 9-11am MCM will turn into an environment designed specifically for children with special needs and their families. MCM will be closed to the public to avoid large crowds, while providing modified lighting, sound adjustments and “cool down” rooms available for children to relax in.

Special programming will include yoga, art and music therapy and more. Admission to this event is at a reduced rate and attendance is limited.

FAMILY SUPPORT NEWS Military Spouse Employment Career Portal

Spouses seeking potential flexible and portable employment are invited to visit the Military Spouse Employment Partnership Portal, https://msepjobs.militaryonesource. mil/msep/. Many businesses have committed to hiring spouses and finding meaningful employment opportunities.

Spouses are challenged with having to move many times leading them to find employment at their new duty station.

Under the Military Family Act established in 1985, the Military Spouse Preference program (MSP) was implemented by the Department of Defense (DOD.) This program provides placement preference in DOD civilian personnel positions to military spouses who meet certain criteria.

MSP applies to DOD vacancies only, and there are variations and exceptions that allow local hiring authorities to tailor their policies to meet their requirements.

Eligibility Requirements the MSP program:

MSEP is part of the Department of Defense’s Spouse Education and Career Opportunities Program. MSEP consist of more than 270 MSEP partners. MSEP is celebrating having hired 75,000 spouses and continues to expand by developing new partnerships with many Fortune 500 plus companies.

Spouses interested in using MSEP will need to register to access the portal.

Up to five resumes may be tailored to specific openings or fields. Job search may be conducted through a basic search or by using an advance search by company, industry, or job type.

Registered spouses are able to research companies offering portable career opportunities, along with those interested in telework, or virtual jobs in customer service, accounting, counseling and other occupations.

Spouses Have Military Preference In Federal Employment

• Spouse of an active duty member of the U.S. Military Services to include Coast Guard or full-time National Guard; • Must be relocating (not for separation or retirement) to accompany your military sponsor under a permanent change of station (PCS) move to an active duty assignment; eligible to apply for MSP as early as thirty days prior to your reporting date at the new duty station; • Need to be married to the military sponsor prior to the sponsor’s reporting date at the new assignment; • Position applied for must be within commuting distance of the sponsor’s permanent new duty station; • A “best qualified” rank must be obtained by the spouse applying for the position.

Spouse Employment Program

The Spouse Employment Program is offered

by Army Community Service to provide assistance to spouses in acquiring skills, MSP preference is given over other developing networks, and resources that candidates except disabled veterans, will allow them to participate in the work employees registered in the Equal force and to develop a career/work plan.

Employment Opportunity (EEO) program, and former employees returning Spouses are provided comprehensive, from overseas. MSP applies to federal accurate, and up-to-date information employment within the DOD civil service on available employment opportunities, or appropriated fund (AF,) and non- education, volunteer resources, and support appropriated funds. They are considered services which assist in making informed

On November 5th, ACS hosted an annual Military Family Action Plan Town hall. The community answered the call by phoning in to submit their suggestions on ways to improve the community. The Military Family Action Plan (MFAP) Virtual Town Hall is your tool to voice your quality of life issues to military leadership. The children from CYSS did just that by sharing their problems that affect readiness and wellbeing. Most children do not have the words to express their anger, sadness, frustration, embarrassment, happiness or joy.

Understanding emotions is a critical part of children’s overall development. It is up to adults to teach children to understand and deal with their emotions in appropriate ways. They are experiencing many new, exciting things for the first time. It can be overwhelming! We need to be sure we always validate our children’s emotions.

We are incorporating in School Age Care curriculum ways to teach them how to use words to express their emotions. Also, we are exploring what might make the children feel their emotions. For example, one of the exercises we did last week, I asked the children to mention words that describe their worries and they said: • Not getting hurt by bugs • My Mom getting hurt • My grades and gymnastics

For the fifth year, Operation HomeFront Florida (OHFL) supported military families by distributing toys to more than 250 USSOUTHCOM families on December 4, 2015.

November 18, 2015 was a great day for parents to celebrate Thanksgiving at the Child Development Center (CDC.) Every year, Family and MWR Sports and Fitness sends the top 10 runners, (two females and eight males,) to represent the command at the Army Ten-Miler. This year was the U.S. Army's 31st Army Ten-Miler.

The Army Ten-Miler is the second largest, (after the Philadelphia Broad Street Run,) ten-mile race in the United States. It is held every October in Washington, DC, sponsored by the U.S. Army Military District of Washington.

The race draws a large number of civilian and military running teams. More than 35,000 runners from around the world participated this year. This race is the Army's premiere running event, beginning and ending at the Pentagon and guiding runners past some of the Nation's most iconic monuments.

On December 5, 2015, Team SOUTHCOM participated in the Spartan Sprint at Vista View Park. With record breaking rainfall hitting the South Florida area that weekend, Vista View Park, was mostly under water by the start of the first wave that Saturday morning. This made the course even more challenging. The course Congratulations to Team SOUTHCOM! one of the largest hills at the park on a newly made gravel path. In addition to the hills, the obstacle placement along the hilly terrain made for an interesting and quite different experience for the participants. Despite the rain, it seems Vista View Park was a good change of scenery for the Spartan Sprint Miami. The Spartan Race delivered an event that was both challenging and enjoyable to the weekend warriors.

Army Family Team Building (AFTB) is a series of training modules that improves personal and Family preparedness, enhancing overall Army readiness and helping America’s Army adapt to a changing world.

Why Should I Attend AFTB? AFTB helps you to cope with and enjoy the military lifestyle. Many of the courses can be applied toward resume’ and career building, self-development and leadership skills. Active duty Soldiers can earn promotion points for participating in the training. AFTB provides the knowledge and self-confidence to take responsibility for yourself and your Family. The training is available to Soldiers, Family members of all Soldiers, Department of Defense civilians and volunteers.

Select Online Training (at the top of the page, right side.) Select the course you want to take.* * In order for your course to register as being fully completed, you MUST click on the ‘Return To Training’ button on the last page of the course. To print your certificate, return to this page after completing the course. An icon will be available to allow certificate printing.

The Zip Code Groups at USSOUTHCOM are organized by place of residence and offer an opportunity to meet new friends. The groups also provide a channel for spouses to get information about what happens at the command and in the surrounding civilian communities. The Zip Code Groups are a means of social interaction and camaraderie for spouses similar to that provided by the Officers and Enlisted Spouses Groups located on traditional military bases. The Zip Code Groups are organized in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. Military Lounge Armed Forces Service Center, which was the USO 17 years ago, is seeking volunteers. The center is located in Terminal E at Miami International Airport. The center provides hospitality for men and women in uniform, veterans, retirees, and their families, and is open 365 days a year. There are three shifts, 9am-1pm, 1-5pm, and 5-9pm.) The Armed Forces Service Center fields, on average, 1,200 requests a month. If interested in this volunteer opportunity, please call Angel M. Volunteer Management Information System(VMIS) 1. Using Internet Explorer, go to www. Myarmyonesource.com. If you are not already registered on the site, click on Register at the top right. Click on the Join Now button in the middle of the page on the right. Complete the registration form and select USAG-Miami in the Military Affiliation drop-box under HQ IMCOM. 2. Once registered, you can log in. Click on the Volunteer Tools located in upper right hand corner of the webpage.

3. Click on the Volunteer Profile. Complete all requested information in the volunteer profile. Be sure to enter the last four digits only of your social security number and save the page. This will ensure you are registered volunteer.

4. You can use the Volunteer Opportunities tab to locate volunteer opportunities on the installation. If you want to volunteer off the installation, click on the Army Community Service link provides a generic volunteer position descriptionSpecial Projects Volunteer-for all off-post volunteer opportunities.

5. Once you locate a volunteer opportunity, click on the position of interest. This will supply with a detailed outline of the position including the organization contact person. If you want to apply for the position, click on the Apply button on the top right of the position description.
