Coast Guard Morale, Welfare and Recreation and US Army Garrison-Miami Family and MWR hosted a Military Spouse Appreciation Luncheon on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at the Coast Guard Station Miami Beach. Eighty spouses attended the luncheon which was held to show our appreciation for all military spouses do to support their active duty service member. The theme for the celebration this year was “Military Spouse Appreciation Day: The Strength of Our Service Members.” Military Spouses Day was created by President Ronald Reagan to acknowledge the significant contributions, support, and sacrifices of spouses of their Armed Forces. In 1984, Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger established the Friday before Mother’s Day as Military Spouses Day. Each year, the US President normally commemorates this day with a ceremonial speech and proclamation. Staff welcomed spouses with a festive beverage, and after socializing, spouses were officially welcomed by Commander Jose A. Peña, US Coast Guard, and Mr. Andy Bird, USAG-Miami. The guest speaker, Mrs. Emmy Ligeikis, spoke about how she manages to provide support for her spouse, who is a veteran receiving
medical care at the Veterans Administration. Mrs. Ligelkis was presented with a plaque to show appreciation for her participation. Attendees enjoyed a lovely lunch consisting of fruit salad, pasta salad, taboule salad with baked bruschetta, barbeque salmon sliders on brioche buns, roasted chicken salad croissants and mini dessert pastries. Twenty-four lucky spouses were winners of the numerous door prizes which included a spa-day; yoga sessions; a two-night stay at the Cottages in Marathon, Florida; local hotel stays and several VISA gift cards. Family and MWR will use the feedback we receive on this event to plan the Military Spouse Appreciation in 2016. We look forward to increasing the number of attendees and hosting an event where spouses from the various commands and branches of service get to know one another.
